  1. I find it interesting in a Bills fan forum how aggressively people are defending Mayfield. So far this season his summary grade = sucks.    It is not like the titans and jets are the top defenses in the league though. And teams had a full off season to review a year of tape on him.  He may just be mired in a classic sophomore slump.   He may get better. He may not.

I get why fans don't understand this truth, but I'm baffled by head coaches who don't get it. Youth may help Jones escape and throw a little better than Eli right now, but if anyone things this changes their trajectory for the foreseeable future is kidding themselves. The team has problems beyond the QB position.

There is a school of thought that game experience helps a young QB develop more than holding a clip board.  Clip board holding proponents think it is a fact not an opinion that holding a clipboard is always better.  But some coaches think differently.

  3. Here is a different type of power rankings.  Based on a formula, targeted at gamblers.  It does not take into accounts things like the injury to Drew Brees and the retirment of Andrew Luck. Not a better method, not a worse method.  Just a different method.  It has the Bills currently  at 15th.

oddsharks definitely like the Bills over the Bengals

NFL.com has the Bills at 12, ESPN at 15. New York Post moves us up one, all the way to 18 from 19. The next lowest 2-0 team is #8. Bitter much?

I think the bitterness is directed at the Jets and Giants. Their fans currently think a strong high school team could beat them.

  5. The main concern about Mayfield coming out of college, was the classic "he is too short" problem.  And while Drew Brees is a radical exception to that rule, it has shown to be a problem for many other talented but shorter QBs.

Last night we went up against a defensive coordinator who saw Mayfield for a full season live in practice last year.  This has to provide a lot more insight for game planning than simply watching game films.   I can't say I know what the Jets defense specifically did different than other defenses, but Mayfield looked like he was throwing out of hole last night. Quite a few passes knocked down, and a launch angle requiring his receivers to leave their feet ( and pay a big physical price) to catch balls he through out of the pocket. Greg Williams may have provided the defensive template to beat up on Mayfield last night.

I also had some understanding that Mayfield was mobile, but that sure was not on display last night.

Cool.   I think there'll be a better play maker on the team next year, and then things will really start cooking.

I've been reluctant to say this, but I feel about the same.  Darnold maybe.  Mayfield maybe.  Murray, was too early to tell.

Whatever, the list is very short.

I don't intend this as a criticism of Daboll. But I honestly don't think Daboll has yet figured out how to maximize Allen's considerable talent.  Couple that with incredible personality, there is no QB in the league more fun to watch and root for.

He made at least 2 throws today that less than 5 QBs in the league can make. If he stays consistent on the regular plays and makes 2-3 star plays every game he will be a top 5 QB before long.

I still think this team is missing one star on each side. The offense needs a true #1 receiver and the defense needs a stud edge rusher. I expect Beane to find both missing pieces next offseason and then the Bills will be ready to compete for a deep playoff run. This year I'm having fun watching the young players grow into themselves.

There are not five QBs in the league I would trade Allen for.  Only one is Mahomes ( and I am not even certain about that).  Allen has a higher ceiling than everyone else in the league, some because of age, some because of talent.

I gotta say that when McDermott arrived, one part of me believed that he was selling snake oil.   He was sincere and all, but come on, what is this stuff he's talking about.  But someone last spring I started to see a little bit of what he was doing and how it was working.  I kept seeing it more clearly, listening to what he was saying and watching how the players perform.  Then against the Jets, when the Bills went down, I realized I got it, that I could see how he was preparing the team for anything, and I thought the Bills not only had a chance, but actually were going to come back.  Then I saw it.  Then the Giants rolled over the Bills on the first possession, and I wasn't worried.  The rest of the half I saw it happening, including the the problems they still have to fix - like end of half execution.

Now I'm fully on board.   Something special is going in Buffalo.  We've all been sitting here waiting for a winner and a championship.   I think we're getting something more.   I think we're getting a team that will dazzle the league like the Pats do, but with character as well as with consistent winning.

    I'm really excited.

This is not an offense that is going to overpower teams.   It needs some more talent worked into the lineup before it can do that.   But it's an offense that can perform and be part of a winning team.   Last season, the team couldn't win because the offense was so weak.  That isn't the case this season.

This offense will be overpowering teams  this season.

Next up? Cincinnati. Let's try and get a W in week 3. If we get that W we can ponder the about the Pats matchup in week 4. The Pats look to be a COMPLETE team this year though, which is kind of scary.

I am not a player or coach on the Bills.  As a consequence my looking ahead will have no impact on the Bills performance against the Bengals.

  9. The Bills and Patriots have quickly knocked established they are the only two teams with a chance to win the AFC east.  I think Josh Allen has already made a case that he is the third best QB in the AFC this season.  Unfortunately, Tom Brady is one of the two better QBs.  I wish I could say otherwise, but the Brown, Gordan, Edelman crew plus Brady means their offense is stronger than the Bills.   Coming into the season, I expected the Bills to have a clearly better defense than the Patriots.   But after two games against similar caliber opponents as the Bills, the Patriots have given up only 1 red zone appearance.   I have not watched their games, so am just going by box scores.

Does our defense match up in a way that makes up for their offense superiority.  (Also feel free to convince me they don't have superiority on offense).

It is hard to overstate how much I want the Bills to beat these guys twice this year.   They are the only team on the schedule I feel looks better on paper than the Bills right now.

When he realizes he's getting pressured, he's pretty damn good. He seems to find himself in too many situations though where he loses his pocket presence.

The earlier you own your massive misjudgment about Josh Allen, the less foolish you will seem.  He has played less than 1 full season of games as starter and has clearly established himself as a force of nature at the position. This particular post of yours is flat out ridiculous.

  11. People really don't seem to grasp the concept that the survey is based on relative expectations and not some sort of measure of fanhood.  If you thought the Bills were going to beat the Jets by 3 TD's before the game, after that game your confidence may have dropped. If you thought the Jets were going to win by 30 your confidence likely rose.   I guess true geniuses expected  the Bills to  squeak out a 1 point win after 4 turnovers. Their confidence should remain exactly the same I suppose.

Paying for/selling it isnt'?  That's news to me.

Legal in some places. But that is not your  question.    I also think dealing and trafficking are not true synonyms.  The phrase human trafficking is used to mean someone being compelled against their will to do something.  It is possible for an adult to make a decision to engage in prostitution completely voluntarily.  I would to split hairs finely, someone voluntarily being a prostitute is "tracking in prostitution" but not "human trafficking" as everyone understands that phrase to mean.   Based on whats is presented in the article, it appears that the prostitutes were compelled by a third party.

I think Flacco is overrated because of his playoff performances. He's been average and even below average in the regular season.

To me you have to consider the entire package, not just the playoffs, not just the big games, but everything.

The scariest part is both are ultimately disappointing.  I think sustained success means you may need to have a QB in that ultra-upper echelon, Rivers/Flacco level ultimately falls short.

Among the young QBs i think Mahomes will be one of those guys. I also think Josh Allen will be.  Don't see the potential in any of the other young AFC QBs (not even Watson)
