  1. I'll get right to the point. I would like to see Schwartz get promoted to HC and Pepper Johnson to DC, under Schwartz's tutelage. The defense hasn't been the problem, the offense has been. While the QB position still poses quite a problem the OL hasn't helped. I think that Mike Munchak would make a lot of sense on many levels for OC. He's a former Oiler/Titan and has worked with Schwartz in Tennessee. Being a former OL, OL coach and HC is a great resume. I realize that EJ is no Steve McNair but both are athletic, mobile QBs and Munchak has been exposed to this type of QB as in Spiller being like a Chris Johnson type RB. Meaning that we could be playing to our players' strengths instead of trying to fit a square peg into a round whole. In the draft we should then be looking for a Eddie George type RB. One last thing, Munchak was a big OL and played on one as well. This all the personel type players that we currently have, let's utilize them.

This could work. I fear losing Schwartz for our defense, but with all the head coach openings we may anyway. At least this way he would still be on our team.
  2. Your concern about a defensive change is reasonable, but bear in mind Marrone hired the terrible offensive coordinator and was supposed to be an O-line guru. But the OL was horrible during his tenure. The only thing I liked about him was the fact that he hired Pettine and Schwartz.

Yes, you are right on all those points. Maybe I should not worry until we see who we get for coach. I thought we were doomed when we lost Pettine, but that worked out fine.
  3. Actually, how ingenious would it be to make Hackett the defensive coordinator? If there is anyone anywhere that knows how to immediately grind an offense to a halt it's him.

You know in an odd way, that makes sense. He certainly brought our offense to a halt!

Why? They went 9-7 in spite of Marrone, not because of him. His departure is not in itself a bad thing. If the Bills replace him with an even worse coach, sure, but that remains to be seen.

I think Marrone was a decent coach it was offensive coordinator and o line that sucked. And when you bring in a new coach they always have to have a new system , not that I worry about them changing the offense. I worry about them changing the defense.
  4. Mine: Rex Ryan

I know there are issues to get around like relationship with Schwartz and defense having 4-3 personnel, but I think that gets sorted out in favor of a guy who's had legit success against bellichick and knows other teams in the division well. Don't forget winning division is easiest way to make post season because it means beating just 3 other teams (ask panthers). Probably also somehow personal about sticking it to jets for allegedly courting marrone into option out.

I say book it, Rex is coming here

Oh God no! Almost anybody but him, he is a defensive coordinator trying to be a head coach and sucking at it!
  5. Despite a lot of head-shaking moments and devastating losses, we finish the season 9-7. A season of coulda-shoulda, perhaps, but unquestionably our best season in a decade.

I can't imagine the Dougs going anywhere, and I think they earned another season. Hackett up for debate. Don't see Schwartz as a HC candidate this year.

    Some final thoughts:

    Offense:

-Spiller is good as gone. Where was he in the second half? I still can't figure out who's at fault here, but I eagerly await what happens with his next team.

-Freddy is still shifty as ever, but next year will likely be his last. Are we content with Boobie and Bryce as his backups/successors? I like both, and feel an upgrade to OL will open things up for Brown in particular.

-I have no idea what the plan is at QB going into next year.

-Disappointed we couldn't get Sammy his 1000, but I love the kid and I can't wait to see him and Woods grow together over the coming years. OBJ has been a menace, but we were never going to draft him and I think in the end Sammy will be everything we expected of him when we traded up for him.

-Hogan was fun to bag on in the preseason, but I am pleasantly surprised with how he came into his own this year. He is a legitimate slot receiver.

-MarQuies Gray looks pretty good. A FB who can catch out of the backfield, a la Bruce Miller. Good pick up by Whaley. I don't miss Summers at all.

-OG and QB are clearly the biggest needs on this team. I thought Urbik at OG was going to be fine - thought he was good last year - whoops! I assume Chris Williams gets another shot (no idea what the contract dictates, but I think we plan to keep him on board). Cyril Richardson didn't seem to suck in his short time out there today, but he probably is just going to be a depth guy for us. Several great starting OGs have gone in the second and third the past few years and I hope Whaley hits on one.

-I won't give Whaley too much crap for Cyrus. Give him another offseason and see if we have anything at all there. Sammy, Preston and Seantrel were productive starters and outside of QB the roster was already solid.

    Defense:

-Really hoping we bring Hughes back, and I think we will. His motor just keeps running.

-Run defense was much better today despite not have Dareus. Wynn was surprisingly good inside and I like his depth; he can be re-signed for cheap and I expect it.

-Stefan Charles will replace KW when his time comes (hopefully not for another 2-3 years). I like him a lot.

-Gilmore is always a late bloomer. Every year he seems to start slow and then lockdown (granted he was hurt at the beginning of last season). I really hope next year he is hot from the start.

-Searcy and Duke are both good safeties to keep around. Searcy will be inexpensive, Duke still working on his rookie contract of course. After that terrible PI, Duke really grew as a player. He is especially good against the run.

-AW was not particularly great this year, but I still like him better than Byrd. He is a little too aggressive pursuing runners in the open field, resulting in a lot of missed tackles, but outside of that I like his phyical play and leadership.

-Corey Graham had a career year. Wonder what the plan is with a healthy trio next year. They gave the nod to Leo, but I think Graham earned a starting spot. Nothing wrong with great depth.

-Brooks is a great gunner. Good for a 4th CB, big hitter and sure tackler. Lots of people giving him crap today, undeserved. He is our 4th string CB (not including Robey as they slot guy) and I'll take it.

-Robey is a fantastic slot corner. Not a lot of eye-popping plays like last year, but quietly reliable all season.

    Special Teams:

-The "core special team players" thing was really true, wasn't it? We got much better this year.

-Congrats to Carpenter on setting a new franchise single season FG record. Dude is money.

-I don't mind having a kickoff specialist, but a kickoff specialist needs to be better than Gay was this year. His directional kicks and onside kicks were garbage. Why don't we just use Schmidt for kickoffs?

Really good post. I think Williams is a solid well balanced safety. Good coverage ability and solid against the run.
  6. Great ability, but it shows nowhere near often enough. As has been said already, he simply refuses to hit a hole quickly for 4 yards and looks for the big one every carry.

But what REALLY put me over the edge on Spiller was the sack he gave up today. Not only did he miss the initial block, but then he turned his back on his man while the guy stepped right around him to get the strip sack. Inexcusable. There is NO part of his heart that's into pass pro.

Yes That just about sums it up.
  7. I have a theory on the OL. I do not pretend to be an expert on this subject and could be very far off the mark so don't beat me up too bad over this. During the draft, the Bills were clearly trying to fix the OL. 3 of them were brought in.....THREE!!

The problem I think is Marone. He has been preaching all year to the players to stop making excuses, stay focused on the game and just play. This same philosophy has been applied to the offensive line. We have some big OLmen. Marone, I think is pushing them to be physical.....beat your man and the offense will win it's matchups.

The problem is and this was revealed very early against the Chargers. Their defense never allowed the OL to get a bead on them. Instead they ran a bunch of stunts and misdirection to confuse the OL. It worked perfectly and since, every defense we have played is mixing things up on their DLines. The offense has had some success but they certainly have not caught up with what defenses are doing to them. You cannot beat your man if the guy backs up goes around another OLman unless linemen learn to communicate and hand off a block to the guy next to him.

I think these big linemen are big enough and strong enough. Not sure if they are smart enough yet. Not sure if they are nimble enough either. Defenses are attacking in different ways. These guys need to figure out the flaws to their game and Marone and his line coach needs to catch up with the rest of the NFL. You can't just tell these guys to beat your man. You also have to find ways to beat stunts and misdirection.

I have seen the Bills use more max protect schemes with success but they really need to be better at teaching the OLmen to help each other.

I think you may be on to something.

This is a very good post. I think beating stunts gets better with experience. Although some of the veterans are never going to get better.
  8. You get the QB some protection schemes that work against these great defences . I don't get the fuss is about Offence Linemen Offence Lineman That's what ya need. Woods was pushed into backfield several times I don't get it. Rodgers an most these guys you talk about that are good. They are!! Because the line blocks and keep players away!!! Put AR, TB, PM, Drew Bree's behind that line we have Would get ugly for them fast. Our First 3 picks Should be LG RG RT or Tight End Draft all Offence. My biggest fear Ortin gets hurt ej comes in cold gets hurt shm They need protection at least 4 secs.

Yes this is what I see also. he can not make great throws when the defense gets to him at the same time the ball does.
  9. My priorities are just fine. Those affected by my situation rather I do this than buy lattes and HBO. I do hope that you never need it, but should you come upon circumstances that spiral out of your control that you are treated with compassion and understanding by folks who maybe feel their priorities include compassion and understanding. I respect your decision to not donate, but I try not to judge your priorities.

You did the right thing, my friend. I gave many years ago when I was unemployed. God will pay you back. He did me.
  10. I am disappointed about our last two losses, but the OP's comments have some merit. The Bills are not a great team. We can all agree on that. The Bills are not a bad team. Some of us can agree on that, some of us perhaps not. Are they a good team? I don't know, but probably not. Are they an average team? Yes. They have a very good defense, a poor offense and OK special teams. That adds up to average, middle of the pack, 8-8, etc. And guess what? We are 5-5 right now. We SHOULD beat the Jests at home, Cleveland at home and Oakland on the road, and lose to Denver, Green Bay and New England. Where does that leave us? 8-8, average, middle of the pack. That said, the "any given Sunday" theme applies and perhaps we lose one of the games we are supposed to win and win one of the games we are supposed to lose. Where does that leave us? 8-8. Could we be better than this with better coaching (maybe) or better QB play (definitely), but in the immortal words of Dennis Green - "We are who we thought we were!"

Good post! This is pretty much what I think, I also would put a lot of our offensive problems on the o-line. They seem to be getting worse instead of better.
  11. Good post.

I felt at the time of the trade that it was a great trade because Watkins was going to be a star, and you cannot win it all, in any sport, without a star or two. You hardly ever see it anywhere. It doesn't matter what position it is. Sure, it's better if your star is a QB but the Steelers won with their stars being a safety and a linebacker. The Ravens won with their stars being a linebacker and LT (and maybe safety).

Stars win games in team sports. That make great plays in big moments. They set great examples. They make other players look better. Sammy already fits that definition.

IMO, stars are worth more than two very, very good players put together.

    Good post, you are right!
  12. This is correct! Tired of the week to week on Sammy. He's a stud, we have him, and ain't letting him go. The draft was in June and is over, get over it people we're stuck with him. LMAO at the people who are so stuck on the draft.

Some of these people think more of draft picks than talent. Players like Sammy are rare. He is talented. catches the ball with his hands, very

rare for a modern player, most have to catch it against their body. He is hard working and plays hurt. You are right. he's the real deal and we were lucky

to get him. The price was cheap.

  13. Actually they only ranked top 10 a few times in the 90s. I only know that because I just looked it up last week for a separate discussion.

Some seasons in the 90s they were downright bad against the run, including '91 and '93.

After Fred Smerlas left our nose tackle was a better pass rusher than a run stuffer if we could have kept Fred another year we would have won

    that first Super Bowl.

  14. I guess I don't fit in here. I like that we won the game. I can't get any traction on diss'ing the Bills because of a lack of style points.

I'm with you, Just win baby! I could care less about how. Would people feel better if they looked good and lost? Probably because then they

would have more to complain about.

  15. In fact all you folks who find so much to B word about after win...shut the pie hole for a day or two. They won..You finally have a real QB (till he's knocked senseless). The Bills are staying put till Bon Jovi is in a Nursing Home drooling on his uke. November and Play Off talk is realistic. Play Offs? What, Play Offs?

Hackett has had to deal with a crappy draft pick QB and now working with a career back up guy who's just doing his preseason warm ups. The line sucks (that's Marrones baby) and Spiller sucked, Jackson is hurt.. He's not doing that bad and we don't know how much play calling is Marrone.

Let's all enjoy this moment and dream of a cold winter day in Foxboro where the Bills get sweet revenge!!!

Hit the nail right on the head. Kick a$$ in Foxboro! Boy, would I love that!
  16. - Refreshing that we had a real announcer today in Gannon. His comments about Bills defense, and secondary were spot on. Theyre both very good

    - Which brings me to my 2nd point. So sick of people trashing our secondary on this board. Gilmore and McKelvin make a strong pair. If one pass is completed against a DB, people on this board trash the guy. By that standard Deion sucked too

    - Conservative game plan was right call. We have a shaky Oline, going against a strong D on the road. This game was always about letting our Defense shut down Geno & co, and the offense staying out of the way

    - I dont really care about the Sammy missed TD. He'll learn and it wasnt bad. People are acting like he was doing an Ocho-Cinco, when all he did was slow down prematurely. The real takeaway is how explosive he was on that play and the TD he did get.

    - Orton has all the qualities of a leader (strong arm, audibles, puts guys in position to make plays, can get the ball out quickly, doesnt play scared) EXCEPT he doesn't feel pressure at all. He simply wasn't born with that gene. This more than anything has the risk of costing us some games with him

    - With the bye, I expect Bryce Brown to be worked into the game plan better against KC

    - Denver about to the give Pats their 3rd loss next week. That puts us just 1/2th game behind

This is a good post. I have to laugh when I see guys screaming, Fire Hackett if we threw the ball all over like they wanted, that Jet front seven

would have had our offensive line for lunch.

Yeah, only scored 43 points. So frustrating.

Seriously, some of you people need to relax. This is a good team who wins games and has a real chance at the playoffs. This is really the best team we've had in a generation. Nothing frustrating about that.

Yes, That is what I think also.
  17. Jimmy Spags! MY MAN!! Glad you're back but you gotta stop usin' woids like "translative" or you'll blow your cover.

Gotta question: Is "Geno" a friend of "ours" or a friend of yours?

And Harvin is a fugazi so

    FAGETTABAHT IT!

    GO BILLS!!!

Youse guys is really sounding nervous and jealous. Look at the bright side. Jackson and Spiller ain't gonna have to worry about getting smashed this week like they usually do against the Jets. I think I might be going to the game Sunday and I hope none of you show up in your gear cuz I might have to smack you eight ways from Sunday and I might not even know it is you. The first one I would like to find is whoever said something about ghosts which scares me and people think is fake but they are not fake because I have seen some of them.

If you guys do get some sort of Christmas miracle the jet s might have a hard time making the playoffs so I might start rooting for you for the rest of the year.

    P.S. J-E-T-S Jets JEts JETS.

Are you sure that punk didn't say kick? Why do you think he don't post here no more?

Spag, You bring back memories of my younger days when I used to hang around people that talked like you. I used to know a Mike Spagnola, you related to him?
