Kingsley Jonathan was signed to the roster after the year under a Futures contract.

Glad to see him talked about. I have thought that he could make this team as the last Defensive End on the 53 if they decide to not pay Shaq and I don't think he'd bring any less than Epenesa or Basham has.

Though I'm still hoping Shaq is brought back under an inexpensive deal.

Thanks for the update and I agree with you on what he can bring to the team and agree on wanting to bring Shaq back as well.

Hopefully he doesn't put himself on IR diving at air again.

Bring back shaq on the cheap too. Then the only hole on defense is MLB and can otherwise go all offense in the draft.

HAha to JP and yes please don't hurt yourself doing not football activities.  And, yes to Shaq please.  I like these two a lot.  Especially in a combo of hedging bets.  One of them will contribute and well on various weeks.

You said unpopular? How about this:

    1. Leslie Fraiser's call on that infamous 3rd and 4 play in the Bengals game was the correct one. Everyone talks about 3rd and 4, but everyone forgets that the play was 3rd and 4 on the Bills 14 yard line. A soft zone concedes the first down but prevents the TD. Not only that but the closer a defense is playing to the goal line the less that they have to worry about WRs getting behind the DBs on a slippery field. All of this was intentional and we know this because the coverage tightened up after that play.
    2. The game was lost when Josh Allen overthrew Diggs on the first drive. If he hits that throw, the game would have been a shootout instead of a blowout.
    3. Tremaine Edmonds was an excellent MLB for the Bills and his absence will be noted.

I don't like your profile picture French Connection.  It does not work for me, fyi.  Sorry, I always think this.  I like your posts.  I have never said anything, but, this thread seems like a good place to share my thought.  Sorry, not trying to be personal, it just doesn't fit for me.  I am sure it is important to you.

    Go Bills!

Basically a player has to sign a contract that qualifies for the formula which is a top 35% contract(somewhere a little over 2 million a year).  Players signing contracts under that don’t even count toward the formula.

    Thanks!

The wailing and crying here over the mere possibility of losing a 3rd rd comp pick, when we dont even have Harris's contract numbers yet, is getting to ridiculous levels. Bills fans really need to disconnect and go enjoy Spring for a bit.

And, do we care more about a potential 3rd round comp pick than compete for a Championship?  Beane has wasted many 3rd round picks on trade up, unfortunately.

However, I do think we will end up with a 3rd round comp pick for Edmunds.  There is lots of time between now and May for players to be signed.  We don't need to sign much more and we have lots of players that are FA's and will be signed by other teams.

All depends on contract value not just total free agents lost/gained.  Contract has to actually qualify for the formula

I thought the ante to getting comp picks was a minimum of net zero gained or lost or 1 player positive lost?

Bills could use a Day 3 pick on a secondary depth piece depending on what they plan on doing with Benford, but that’s about it.

They are set at CB1, CB2, Slot, both Safety spots and have great depth at CB in Benford & Jackson.

LB, DT, EDGE.. yea, sadly it seems we do still need help at all 3 positions.

Heaven forbid Allen ever gets more than mid-tier FA’s and Late Day 2/Early Day 3 picks.   Diggs doesn’t absolve them of constant neglect.

Regarding LB, DT, EDGE.  We can resign Shaq Lawson and Jordan Phillips cheap.  Another DT is probably needed in the draft.

The team desperately needs help at LB and CB and safety depth, not to mention a true run-stuffing DL and you don't want to use picks there?

I honestly can't tell if this is sarcasm.  Josh is our best player and we need to protect him short and long term and you are talking about Safety depth?

It’s OK we’ve got holes to fill

Agreed and if we don't draft a RB that is fine too.  UDFA.  We have drafted a lot of RBs and have Cook for 3 more years.  We only have 6 picks.  I hope we do not draft a RB.  If late, so be it and hopefully they are a great pick up.

Harris, to me, is what they wanted Moss to be. He brings a different skill set and can convert in short yardage. Harris rounds out th skill set in the RB room. He’s a decent back.

The running game depends on Cook’s development IMO. If he takes a step, which he might, they’ll be okay. Saffold has historically been a superior run blocker to McGovern as well (McGovern is an obvious upgrade overall).

    Agreed and agreed.

Hopkins isn't a thing. It's a pipedream. He has only this year and next year on his deal. A 36 million dollar cap hit this season and a 23 million dollar cap hit next year. There is no way to restructure him to where we could afford it. Even if we could do a new deal for him, there's no way Beane would carry both Diggs and Hopkins contract at the same time.

We're 18+ million over the cap next season also. A gamble on an less than market value deal with OBJ, sure. Hopkins cannot be done.

Nope. He's not coming in under Motor. Especially if his agent agreed to the deal after seeing what Motor got.

You are most likely right, but, never say never.  I think they will be close.

As I mentioned an earlier post, Spotrac's estimated market value for him was 7.1 annually. He may have come a little cheaper than that, but there's no way he came under 2 million. Especially if Motor cost 3.75. His market value was under Harris'.

He could be less than Motor.  I prefer Harris over Motor.  Liked Motor too.

If Harris cost $5 million a year I don’t think I like it or not as much.  I think Harris will be between $3-5.

Being a one year deal Harris didn’t have a market either.

They’re filling out depth of the WR room suggesting Davis is still WR2 and the position won’t be a priority in the draft.

Let's say Davis works out next year.  I hope and think he can.  He will be a FA the next year.  What do you think that will cost?  We need to have a plan behind him.  This may be it and Shakir.  And, either could work.  But, I would not be surprised if we draft a WR as well (high pick) still.

    Go Bills!

Thank you for putting a good bit of thought into this.  I understand what you're thinking about - how many of the Bills currently signed players are really solid to make the 53 man  roster? And where do they need to add?  I think you did a pretty good job of identifying that.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Bills aren't looking to fill a 53 man roster at present.  They're looking to fill a 90 man roster to go into training camp.

So another way to look at it is that the Bills currently have 61 players under contract by my count (look at Spotrac and add up the ones that are lined out because their salaries are lower than the top 51.)  A couple of those were actually on the roster last year (Quintin Morris is an example.

So the Bills are actually looking to add 29 players between now and training camp.  In addition to 6 draft picks, they will likely add 6-10 undrafted rookies, and 13 or so FA.  And at the bottom of the roster, those guys will battle it out and a couple will make the 53, then another handful will make the practice squad.

For some of the needs you identify (such as a DE to stopgap Miller), the Bills may actually like someone they've already got signed such as Kendal Vickers, who played a couple games for the Raiders.  Same thing on OL.

I know I will be hella disappointed if you're correct and our "improvements" to OL consist of Connor McGovern, a 31 yr old "fringe" OT like Brandon Shell (is that who you mean?) and a Day 3 C/G prospect.  But that's not on you for possibly making an educated guess about what the Bills will do, it's on the Bills for undervaluing the OL.  Signing Fournette or Elliot would make no sense (IMHO) because if we don't have a solid run blocking OL they won't help us.

BTW currently Matt Barkely is on the roster giving us 3 QB.

    Well said.

Phillips is always hurt. Need someone more reliable.

I get it, but, he makes plays when he plays.  When he plays he is only a rotational player as is our entire Dline. So, it sort of works.  Lightning in a bottle IF he stays healthy for cheap.

I am good and get both sides to signing and not signing him.

It just makes no sense from a resource standpoint to bring in a veteran, free agent running back

Unless it’s like a duke Johnson type that you can pay like $1 million

    Agreed

He signed a potential slot receiver with speed who is coming off a serious injury, and a guard. The positions that demand talented FA is ILB and a big bodied back who can get short yardage and pass protect. He whiffed on 3 backs who would have been perfect(Foreman, Williams and Perrine) and signed affordable deals.Beane freed plenty of cap space to get a couple of meaningful FA. Why is he waiting to get FA that won’t help? So far he’s been bad. Our fan base shouldn’t accept this.

I disagree with you priorities and apparently Beane does too.

There are 9-11 spots available on the 53 man roster. With 6 draft picks that leaves at least 4 FA that will be brought in and will be on the team. I’m not taking Udfa or practice squad type FA that will round out the 90 Man roster

    Some thoughts…

    1.  Not all draft picks make the 53

    2. Injuries happen

    3.  Vets can get beat out

    4. Some players excel and make the 53
