Good old fashioned fear and paranoia lives on.How long before cocaine violations are relaxed? It was once used for it's medicinal value as well.
This is a slippery slope.

Kiper sucks. If he was so brilliant some NFL team would pay him 5 million a season to run their draft. Hell begrudgingly bump the grade up to a B when he does his regrading. If this was New England's draft he'd be going on and on about what a genius the hoody is.

Its not my money so who cares?the Bills will be hit with $10.2 million in DEAD MONEY

Agreed. Deep draft. Got our tackle. This offense should be solid. Time to run over some people then go over the top when they put eight in the box.I'm probably in the minority on this, but keeping hold of the 2nd this year was a coup. Yes, we gave the first next year. But the 2nd is more valuable now in trying to get this team one more starter and over the proverbial hump.

FIRE WHALEY NOW. This trade is an outrage.
A combination of both!!!!This is either brilliant trolling or insane stupidity. I'll let others be the judge.
-
Yep. Lets ignore all the good moves and focus on the ones we dont like. Whaley is terrible. Fire him now.It is certainly in the same class as trading Marshawn Lynch. How did that work out? This is a great trade for the 49er's. They get a proven NFL receiver for a 4th round pick. Sweet deal. The Bills front office seems determined to make their last few months on the job memorable, if not productive!
Bad deal.
The Bills re-signed Stevie Johnson and Buddy Nix said, "One of our philosophies coming in is that we wanted to keep our good players here. We were able to do that with Steve Johnson." Now Nix wasn't too successful overall, but keeping your best players is generally a good idea.
I guess Doug Whaley has a different philosophy. Trade away next year's 1st and 4th round picks to move up 5 slots in the draft. Whaley lets our best safety go for free (Jairus Byrd) and lets our best receiver (Stevie Johnson) go for a likely very late 4th round pick. Is this a winning strategy?

No loss. Nothing but losing while he was a Bill.
-
Amazing class of QBs who are all falling down the draft board and havent played a down in the NFL yet.
-
Got the best receiver in the draft and a dynamic playmaker that defensive coordinators will have to gameplan for. Great move. Absolutely worth the risk. Plus the fact we kept our second rounder this year in a deep draft is a bonus. Picking tenth every year has gotten us nowhere.
-
He will be great. This is what I'm saying. We invested two 1st round picks and a 4th on this guy. So he'd better be great. Not good, great. We now have a group oh shorter wide outs by today's NFL standards. Watkins adds to that. I'd rather we invested less, moved up 2 spots for Evans. He's the piece we needed. I was at the Bills Draft party tonight. Guess next year it will be a brunch.

Russel Wilson. Third round. Colin Kaepernick. Second round. Nick Foles. Third round. Ill take my chances on a qb after the first round if EJ doesnt pan out.But he's bang on...There is every indication that EJ is either not an NFL QB/or an injury problem...this leaves the Bills searching for a QB next year with our 2nd rounder?
It's a huge push in the chips on EJ gamble
Weve got so much to lose having missed the playoffs the last fourteen years dont we?...sadly, my potential meltdown over getting Beckham at 9 would have been worse.
Look, I like Watkins. I really do. I will just REITERATE,
Because people SEEM TO FORGET
Trading 2 firsts and a 4th for 1 first is risky. I hope to see immediate production. I think that there is chance that production could have achieved with later picks. By giving up less. Or staying, and taking Ebron (who would have been there). So I see zero problem with holding Watkins to that standard.
-
Could not love this move more. This guy will be a superstar. Next years pick will be in the twenties so who cares. You rarely get a chance to pick a guy like this. Everyone hating on this move is clueless.
-
There has been way to much press about the Bills taking a tackle. To the point that Im starting to think its very unlikely they will take a tackle at nine. I expect them to trade back. Maybe with Dallas for their first and second. If no QB's are taken by nine the value of that picks goes up. Some team will want to trade up to nine get the QB they want. Their first and second would represent fair value.
-
To much is what it would costPlease, no trade up. The rumor is that ATL would have to give up 2 seconds and 2 firsts to move up from 6th to 1st. I can't imagine what it would cost to move from 9 to 1.
-
He wont be there at 26.See your QB, get your QB.
Personally if I were Cleveland I'd be willing to gamble he's available with their second round 1 pick.
Pettine is going to have plenty of input on that pick.Pettine is the coach, not the GM, those decisions are above his pay grade

This is a huge year for EJ. Many in the media are saying Buffalo has playoff caliber talent. EJ is the big question mark. Have my fingers crossed that he can be the difference this year.
-
My bad. You guys are right. How dare I question anything the Bills do. I mean lets look at the big picture. Superbowls Champs 2000-2008. Then again 2010 -2013. I mean really. With 13 Vince Lombardi trophies over the past 14 seasons why in the world would anyone question what this team does? What was I thinking? Its obvious Schwartz will set records in every single defensive category this year. Records that will never, ever be broken. Im expecting 300 sacks. 200 ints. 250 Fumble recoveries. 350 defensive points(in the first half of the season alone). Negative rushing and passing yards for the entire year. I should just revoke my right to be a Bills fan. Ill try to do better. Where can I buy my pom poms BTW. Any advice would be appreciated.
-
Yea. That makes me feel a bit better. There is definitely room for more improvement and Schwartz did have a top twenty D in Detroit the past few years. I think Im a little snake bit by the disaster that was Wannstadt so anytime I hear another coach talk about 4 man rushes and one on one battles I tend to get a little stressed. If it makes you feel any better, Schwartz's defense in Detroit last year generated as much pressure with just their front 4 as Pettine did blitzing 5 or more.
I also read on PFF that Schwartz's defense in Detroit was the most productive blitzing defense in the NFL last year.

Moving the draft to May was a really bad call.If its for Mathews I quit following this team, no ****. Trade up for an impact player like Clowney YES. We can get a damn good RT in round 2 and possibly even 3.
Please Goddell move the draft back to April!!!
-
Yea. I really dont get the angry reaction Im getting from some of you. I try to look at things objectively. Obejctively includes criticism and concern sometimes. Ive been following this team since I sat on my fathers lap in 1973 watching the juice cut up something(opposing defenses) other than his ex wife. My loyalty and love for this team is inarguable. I also am not one of these fans who complains about everything they do(see my comments on EJ for that one). Having concerns or criticising your team(when reasonable) is nothing to apologize for. I simply dont want to see this defense turn passive when it looked like they were taking major steps forward last year under pettine. Was last years D' perfect? No. But it was a heck of alot better than what weven been subjected to the past decade or so. Just not real thrilled about some of the things Ive heard. The proof will be in the pudding, one way or another, come September. Not what he was saying, sometimes I think people read These threads to get angry and chastise. I think it would be great if we could stick to the topic and argue the point or premise instead of making judgments.
-
Not at all. Just voicing concerns. Schwartz's defense might be better if it can stop the run. I havent once said this defense is 'destined' to fail. Im just raising some questions. Our defense was on the verge of being dominant towards the end of last year. The Dolphins game comes to mind as one of the more outstanding defensive performances over the last ten years. The personnel we have is geared towards a very aggressive scheme. Schwartz does not have a resputation for being overtly aggressive. Well see what happens.Maybe you can help me understand then?
From what I gathered, the OP says we're switching to a 4-3 under Schwartz. While Schwartz does employ a 4-3, it's not entirely accurate to say that we're switching to that scheme as if we were running a 3-4 last year.
Then he alludes that we don't have the DE's to justify the move which isn't entirely accurate either since we played pretty much the entire 2013 season with a 4 man front.
He's the one that brought up Wannstedt originally and the negatives associated with his scheme. Then he finished it off by asking for reassurances that this defense won't look and perform much like it did under Wannstedt or <insert another failure DC here>.
So really, what is someone supposed to assume when reading the OP? It sounds like he already thinks the 4-3 we're about to run is destined to fail.
-
2012 would be two years ago. 2013 was last year. So Im just as confused as you.I'm confused now. I'm talking about the personnel being the same from last year, which was 4-3 personnel. Because they ran a 4-3 the year before. They did not run a 3-4 last year. The most frequent defense we was was the nickel, IMO. Pettine didn't run a true 4-3 or 3-4.
I just hope the addition of Schwartz doesnt mean the end of Nickell Roby blitizing on third and long. Yea thats a real oversimplification but it captures the essense of what im talking about. Or them blitzing two DB's high so the QB steps up into Mario(something they did quite a bit last year).
-
On another note are we expected to be cheerleaders here? This team hasnt made the playoffs in thirteen years(or is it fourteen). I LOVE(YES LOVE) alot of what theyve done. I think Whaley has done a tremendous job with the acquisition of talent in the short time hes been GM. He reminds me alot of Polian when Polian was the new Bills GM. Very good drafter. Even better at getting cast offs from other teams to come in here and contribute(Mike Williams was a steal for a 6th rounder). But we are talking about the same head coach who refuses to fire his best friend(crossman) despite lousy special teams play(something that completely undermines Marrones credibility IMO). So I thinks its valid to be a bit concerned over the guy he chose to replace Pettine.(Personally I would have looked at an assistant from another team whose philosophy is similar to Pettines. Somebody off Pittsburghs staff perhaps)
-
Did you watch the defense in 2012? 22nd in the league. If anything your validating my concerns. The Bills made moves in FA and will draft accordingly to what Schwartz wants to run. We had a 4-3 in 2012 and had the personnel then, The only guy we lost since then outside of Byrd was Carrington, correct? Replaced with Branch. Why do you think we don't have the right personnel? Serious question, I feel like I am missing something,
