I see a lot of buyer’s remorse going on with Josh right now and I really don’t get it. I don’t see the other rookie QBs lighting it up yet and Josh was the 3rd one taken. Had he not been injured, I think we beat the Texans and he moves to 3-2 as a starter with 3 wins against playoff caliber teams.

People say they aren’t seeing improvements and I couldn’t disagree more. The deer in the headlights look is fading and the game appears to be slowing down. I’m seeing far fewer ill-advised decisions. He is still a work in progress (like all the other rookie QBs), but nothing so far makes me think he has any less ability to be successful than the other guys.

I think the biggest remaining areas for improvement for Josh are:

    1. Properly gauging what is NFL “open”. If he can get a grip on that this year, wait until he gets targets who can separate.

    2. Presnap recognition. He is a really smart kid and I have confidence he will excel in this area over time. This is the first time he is seeing the exotic defenses of the NFL.

Biggest reasons for optimism over QBs of the drought era:

    1. The arm talent - Throw on any EJ or Fitzpatrick game and you’ll see head scratching zip code accuracy issues.

    2. Use of the middle of the field - We rarely saw this with Losman and Tyrod. It completely handicaps an offense when you refuse to use half of the field.

    3. Willingness to throw downfield - Trent Edwards was the worst at this. Defenses will play close to the LoS like they are moving the fielders in against the kid who sucks at kickball. You have to keep the defense honest.

    4. Signs of pocket presence - We’ve gone through many QBs who had no feel for the pocket and would just take off at the first sign of pressure. Allen has shown flashes of poise, keeping his eyes downfield, stepping up in the pocket and making a throw. He still has a ways to go, but I didn’t even see flashes of this from past QBs.

When you throw 23 passes a game, you generally won’t hit 300 yards. To do so would require ~13 ypa which is a phenomenal number. He is developing before our eyes, but it seems like a lot of folks can’t see the forest through the trees. My eyes tell me he is already on par with where Tyrod was a year ago and he is just getting started.

great post I totally agree. I love a lot of what I see In Josh. A couple of games sitting down will do him good with his Injury. Most of the bitching is coming from the Rosen Fan Boys and WGR crew who simply can’t hate Josh Allen enough. Especially Mike Shoope and Jeremy White.

  2. Nice story I loved it. Bills making a serious mistake not getting Josh a Top QB coach. Almost waited to the middle of the season to get him a veteran QB Anderson to help him. The game is too fast for him right now. His arm talent is there. He needs reps and good coaching. Once the game slows down for him he will come around and be the QB that was worthy of the 7th overall pick. I have faith and I’m not worried at all.

Get the kid back in there, he can take it. Mix in 2 or 3 deep balls to Foster a game. Let him continue to work on his chemistry with Zay and glue Anderson to his hip. Next year he'll have an improved receiving group and O-line and a year of lumps/lessons under his belt.

Totally agree with this thought process

  4. please just go away and hide. That was one of the greatest team defense performances in Bills History. They played violent and hard and with a edge. I think the bills who have 6 home games left will win 5 of them.  That gets them to 7 wins. Just have to steal 2 more on the road. The front part of their schedule was brutal. I feel sorry for any team

entering new era field from this point forward. Your about to see real pain inflicted on opponents. Right now I think the Bills have the best Defense in the NFL.  As matter a fact Brady better get ready for a beat down to his body.

Allow me to summarize the arguments against the OP's proposition - "Someone needs to be fired over Mahomes right now" --

    1. "Mahomes has more offensive talent around him." So ... the Bills brain trust that passed on Mahomes ought to be given a mulligan because they also failed to address other critical needs on offense?  This one boils down to, "Sure, they blew it with Mahomes, but they also blew it with the WR corps and the O line, so it's really not just about passing on Mahomes."  McDermott and Beane ought to feel secure about this one. (A variant on this one: blame Doug Whaley because he technically presided over that draft even though nobody really thinks he made the call on this one.)

    2. "But Mahomes is playing under a very talented offensive coaching staff." So ... we should definitely not blame Bills management who, after all, hired those inferior coaches.

    3.  "But we got Tre White in the deal, and then a draft pick that allowed us to trade up for our guy at QB the following year."  So ... we ought to feel happy that we have a shutdown CB to go with a raw project at QB. In other words, the Browns c. 2011. Joe Haden, Shutdown Corner + Colt McCoy = 4-12.  Or perhaps more accurately, the Browns 2012:  Joe Haden + Brandon Weeden. They got their man all right. (I will admit that this argument has some logic to it, at least a whole lot more than the others, but I'm not sold.)

    4. "But Josh Allen is more talented than Mahomes and will be a better QB when all is said and done." Now we're in pure denial mode, or what behavioral economists call the endowment effect - "I'm not trading my lottery ticket for that $10 million! The jackpot is now at $530 million! I'd be a fool to give up the chance for that fortune." (Yes, I believe Allen MAY be good ... I'd give him perhaps a 1 in 3 chance of being a very good starting QB. Mahomes is definitely - 100% - a very good starting QB RIGHT NOW. Maybe better than just very good.)

Wow this is the most epic true post and thread about what happen to the Bills not drafting Mahomes. This my friend was a epic beat down to the mahomes haters.

  6. mahomes has 5 straight games over 300 yards 16 TDs. He is on pace for around 42 TD passes. How many years will it take the bills to get 5, 300 yard passing games. mahomes has done it 5 times in his first 7 games. Billsareback which was my name during that draft class discussion on these boards and jeffsmagic tried to tell you that this guy was the next great one. But all we got was ridicule for our opinions. Feels good to be vindicated. note I do love Josh Allen and I willing to stay behind him and root for him. But I think mahomes will end up being the better QB when it’s all said and done.

If that were us, Allen would have thrown the ball slightly too low for our JAG receiver to grab it, and then Twitter analysts would explode with 15 images that prove the pass should have been better and someone on the other side of the field was wide open if only Allen had looked that way

Happy days you would not have to keep crying on these forums, if we had drafted Mahomes. I like Josh Allen and think he will come around. But Mahomes is at a whole different level.

I don’t recall a big groundswell of support in 2017 to take Mahomes.  If some of you did, props to you.  I don’t feel bad about Mahomes or Watson because there was no big push at the time for Buffalo to draft either of those guys

Are you kidding me we had the 10th pick in the draft and we passed on 2 great QB’s. After the chiefs competed this trade and drafted Mahomes there GM & coach at the time said they drafted a once in a life time generational QB. Me and Jeffsmagic were saying the same thing on the stadium wall and were lambasted and ridiculed relentlessly. Jeffsmagic quit the stadium wall over the bashing of his thoughts on Mahomes. Well the chickens have come home to roost.

You say this multiple times every time KC plays. Do you think you two were the only ones to share this opinion of yours? Well I’ll say it just in hopes you stop - you were right. And that other guy, he was right too. And no one else.

never said no one else said we should draft him. But me and Jeffsmagic were the most vocal about it and we were ridiculed for it to no end

i think allen has looked alright, lots of big plays called back or dropped.

elite runner, great arm, questionable decision making, horrible supporting casting.

post of the day and so right. I was actually encouraged by what I saw from Josh Allen today. He was starting to come on and was making plays when he got injured. I can also tell you this if he plays the entire game we win this game.
