  1. I have to laugh at the ignorance and outright stupidity of a lot of the posters in this thread.

Let me sum up pages and pages of comments with the following...

Marrone's quality as a coaching prospect should be not based purely on stats and his win/loss record at SU. That is a remarkably incomplete, sophomoric approach to his value that misses large amounts of meaningful nuance.

Secondly, regardless of what you or I think about Marrone, you should be smart enough to acknowledge that he was a hot prospect. He was heavily pursued by multiple teams in need of a coach, and some reports suggest he may have been Cleveland's #1 choice over Kelly.

Does that really remind you of Chan Gailey or Dick Jauron?

None of us knows if Marrone will be great or a bust. Anyone who claims to know the answer to that is full of BS.

But what we all must agree to is that this is most certainly not "business as usual" at 1 Bills Drive.

Russ and company quickly and aggressively pursued top coaching candidates perceived as such by multiple organizations in the NFL, not just the Bills...and bagged one of them before teams got a chance to do so.

So far, Russ Brandon is living up to his bold words at the Press Conference. Things are changing.

That is all we can ask for as fans at this time.

  2. What about the report that suggested Kelly would make his decision by the end of Saturday?

I guess he still has a little bit of time to make that come true, but it looks like he is not going to decide anything on Saturday.

So he apparently needs more time than was originally thought.

I don't know which organization that favors, but it suggests the original story that he is on his way to Cleveland may not necessarily be true. Which in turn could favor anyone who is not Cleveland, like the Bills.

  3. I'm thinking at the last minute he bails and goes back to Oregon and gets whatever it is he's after. Money or more control or whatever. Either that or he over plays his hand and no one makes him an offer.

Clearly La Canfora is suggesting there is a certain air of unpredictability to Chip. I guess he could return to Oregon, having used all this as leverage in Oregon to get more of what he wants there. But I don't see that being very likely.

This guy needs to be careful. You don't let it be known that you have decided it's time to make the jump to the NFL, jerk a bunch of NFL front office chains, and then retreat back to college...if you ever actually want to work in the NFL.

again....browns meet for 7 hours...eagles meet for 9 hours......bills meet for 25 mins? come on man....

Do we actually have any confirmed source indicating the length of the Bills interview?

I am under the impression it was somewhat brief, but I don't recall reading anything that actually stated how long it lasted.

  4. I get the sense that the repeated claims that the Bills were a "token" interview and were/are not serious contenders means one of two things: 1) it's true, or 2) the "radio silence" by the Bills organization means the reporters are making assumptions.

I'm leaning towards 1) it's true, because info is leaking from Kelly's camp as well, and there's been nothing to suggest Buffalo is really in it. But we'll know soon enough, and then one way or the other, the Bills will have a coach.

I have decided that I have read or heard nothing which suggests the Bills don't have as good a shot at Kelly as anyone.

That may in fact not be the case, but we don't know that at this time.

There is too much conflicting or flat-out bad information out there right now.

And we do have a legit source quoting a "league source" saying Kelly is playing hardball trying to use the teams' offers against each other.

If that is true, I would say it is impossible to indicate how this will unfold, who is a front runner, or who doesn't stand a chance.

  5. On a related note regarding how Chip is apparently handling all this:

    From Jason La Canfora:

On Chip Kelly, to reiterate, he is calling the shots here. Phil Knight is always on the other line. He left the Bucs at alter a year ago...

    and

It'll be close and done when there's a signed agreement, and he informs Oregon he's leaving. Until then, no one knows.

Those are 2 tweets from Saturday.

  6. Mike Freeman of CBS Sports says the following at the CBS website:

"Kelly is doing what many people do when trying to get a new job. He's attempting to get the best deal possible by playing one team against another. One league source said Kelly is playing 'the best game of hardball he's ever seen.' It's believed Kelly is attempting to get as much power over personnel as possible, and that might be an issue with the Browns. We'll see.”

  7. FWIW, NFL Network's Ian Rappaport hears the following from around the league regarding the Bills:

    The
' QB situation is certainly a question mark. The other thing is, I hear nothing but good things around the league when it comes to eventual GM Doug Whaley and CEO Russ Brandon. It's rare you hear such positive reviews about, well, anything, but these two are respected. Brandon for his ability to be an administrator, Whaley for his personnel prowess. People love old
alums, and Whaley would like to build in the model of what we see in Pittsburgh. The phrase I heard most often with regard to Buffalo's situation? "
They are in good hands." Something you don't often hear.

Well this is interesting to read.

Would someone like Chip Kelly actually perceive Brandon, Whaley, and Kelly himself to be a potential "dream team" rolling forward?

  8. If these reports of meeting with the Browns and Eagles are true and each have been 7+ hours (which I can not beleive would be the case) shouldn't we question CK's time management and those of the executives of the Browns and Eagles?

Who has this much time in life? No matter what you do, who has 7+ hours to talk to anyone about anything?

The 7 hour part of this doesn't strike me as odd at all. Have you noticed how many hours the NHL and NHLPA have devoted to reaching terms on a new CBA?

Kelly isn't interviewing for a job as ticket taker. Have you noticed a lot of money is connected with the business of the NFL?

The higher the stakes, the more there is to talk about.

  9. Not to be negative, but does it really matter which one of these guys the Bills hire? The candidates with HC experience only had success because they had talent and most importantly they had top notch QBs. Wiz had Warner and Lovie had Cutler, both had multiple talented WRs.

In my opinion, the Bills need to find someone that will utilize CJ and has to be a master motivator. Maybe that's Kelly? Regardless, they have to find a legit QB. Do that and whomever they hire will be the next NFL HC genious. The bigger issue is where are they going to find that QB? Not in this years draft. None of these guys interviewing are going to win and turn this franchise around with Fitz. All these coaches are capable with the right QB in place. Miss on the QB and we'll right here 3 years from now.

All very true! The QB is 3 times as important, if not more, than the coach in my opinion.

As I said in another post a few days ago, if we got Tom Brady next year, I could be the coach and we would make the playoffs.

  10. I think we have established from a variety of legit sources that Kelly did meet for 7 hours with the Browns.

We don't know what's going on though, that is for sure.

Peter King Tweeted as of 2 hours ago (about 9pm eastern) that Philly was still meeting with Kelly.

Earlier reports were saying Philly is out and it's b/w the Bills and Browns! So there you go.

We'll know when we know. Until then, speculation is somewhat meaningless. Fun to ponder though.

Shouldn't the Bills Brass already be in Denver interviewing McCoy? Who knows given their wall of silence.

Yep, I believe that is the currently accepted story...the Bills are in Denver and we met with McCoy today.

ESPN has a column saying we interviewed 3 candidates yesterday in Phoenix, then were moving to Denver today.

  11. For all we know, Russ may have been in contact with Kelly for the last few months, and already have a verbal agreement. Maybe the Browns and Eagles have just been spending all of this time with him, pleading for him to reconsider.

    A fool can dream...

    Go Bills!!

Your point is well taken, and we certainly have no real idea of what is happening right now.

Having said that, I highly doubt a 7 hour meeting b/w Kelly and the Browns would have happened if it was just pleading with him to reconsider his preexisting verbal agreement with the Bills.

It would be the other way around based on time spent interviewing. I.E., you would imagine the Bills would have been doing the pleading based on the short time they spent with Kelly.

  12. The value of Twitter reports hinges entirely on whose tweets you are reading, and whether or not they are credible, primary sources of news information.

I have been following Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie almost exclusively for NHL lockout information, b/c they are among the very few who actually seem connected, have real sources, and are actually engaged in journalism. I.E., finding out information and sharing it with the public via TWITTER.

When a tweet is Joe Jerk passing on what he read in another tweet that began life as a rumour, the tweet isn't very valuable.

And a new trend is for mediocre "journalists" to throw a lot of Twitter crap at the wall and see what sticks, in hopes of actually landing the big story.

I'm surprised some of them don't just tweet "Kelly to Buffalo" followed by "Kelly to Browns" followed by "Kelly to Philly" followed by "Kelly to stay in Eugene!"....

One of those tweets has to be right!

So Cleveland's billionaire owner, with no GM in place wouldn't provide that very possibly? Maybe more than us even. Possibly even if we make a GREAT offer. Hell, I'd venture more power would be less success at some point for the team offering it honestly. Diminishing returns with it

It's not about how much money the Browns' owner has; it's about how much of it he wants to give to Kelly. And we simply don't know the details here. Who knows! Maybe Cleveland is prepared to outbid anyone. But if that was the case, after 7 hours of interviewing, why hasn't Kelly signed with the Browns yet?

This was my original point. Kelly apparently spent all day hashing out, in great detail, the terms of his signing with Cleveland. And yet he hasn't signed with Cleveland! And it looks like that after a very brief meeting with Kelly, the Bills may have done something to make Kelly re-think the situation.

If that is accurate, I find that interesting. I'd like to know the real details of how this is all playing out right now. It would make an interesting movie.

  13. Why would the qualities you presented (money, power, etc....) as creating a preferred destination be any different than Cleveland for instance?

Well, there's money and then there's money. We may have offered the guy a lot more than other organizations are prepared to offer.

There's power and then there's power. An established big name GM may not want to let Kelly do as he pleases in terms of selecting talent. In Buffalo, that's all up for grabs. We may well be able to offer the guy money and a situation other teams can not match, when the specific details are analyzed.

Or he may end up in Philadelphia and we made him a crap offer. Who the hell knows.

  14. One interesting aspect of the Kelly saga is this: we seem to have solid confirmation that he met for like 7 hours with the Browns.

Further, the Bills website says the Bills met with him last night. It doesn't mention length, but it was presumably a lot shorter than 7 hours.

If Kelly actually ends up with the Bills, or if we have at least forced him to delay signing with anyone else while he considers his options, it makes you wonder: what the heck did Brandon tell him during his presumably brief meeting with Kelly?

I am going to guess big bucks, potentially long term K, and assuring Kelly he could have a lot of say in personnel.

It may have been fleshed out in detail that Nix is gone soon, and that it's all going to be a fresh new horizon in Buffalo, and Kelly can be a part of shaping all that. I'm sure that environment would be preferential to him.

  15. No shocking for a guy who's young with no meaningful game action in 2012 and no practice reps.

Young or old, a ton of game action or none, this kid just doesn't have it and never will. Not as as QB in the NFL.

I'm sure Minnesota already knows that.

    That legs broken!

Or not... Grabbing mid leg and the apparent pain had me worried for his health and well being.

Yah they said he walked off the field and maybe had a cramp. It DID look like a broken leg in terms of how he was reacting on the field.

  16. It's tough to read too much into the tweets...but if Cleveland is starting to look at other options, doesn't that mean Kelly has more of a chance to end up in Buffalo than it seemed 24 hours ago?

Assuming it really was down to Browns and Bills for him.

I realize it's only 7:00pm in Phoenix, but I thought we'd have an announcement by now!

  17. Dalton is horrible and he is not going to get better.

Way too much is made of "developing" even with a complex position like QB in the NFL.

You have it or you don't, and it usually doesn't take super long to figure out which camp you are in. That's my theory at least.

Look at RGIII and even Luck. Are people debating how good they are or how long it will take for them to "develop"?

The reality is very few guys have what it takes to be a very good QB in the NFL.

Right now, there are about 5 of them. None coming in this draft either.
