  1. Chip Kelly is high risk/high reward. Either you like that idea for a coach, or you don't.

If you want the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in the NFL, you hire Chip. If you like the idea of all NFL talk being on Buffalo, you hire Chip. If you like the idea of maybe winning a Superbowl, you hire Chip.

If you want to stay the course and give up some of that opportunity in favor of predictability, you don't hire Chip.

I think Chip in the NFL would be like Hitler in WWII. Hitler was an unbelievable risk taker. Some of his wildest successes resulted from those risks, as did some of his most horrible blunders.

I say go for it baby! Roll the Panzers into the Ardennes and let's see if we can conquer France in a few weeks...

  2. Here is a really good analysis as to why he will probably end up getting cut

    http://www.ninersnat...olin-kaepernick

An interesting article. This does NOT demonstrate to me, though, that he will end up being cut.

That will boil down to what the 49ers think they can get for him in a trade, and if that returned value to the 49ers is worth $1 million to extend him past the new league year in March.

So in a way, San Fran has the ability to buy a 3rd round draft pick for $1 million, if that is what Smith will fetch on the open market.

They may well consider that a good deal. Who knows.

The funny (or perhaps sad) part is the comments below that article.

I read the first 40 or so comments. No mention of the Bills was made in regard to "QB needy teams" who might want to trade for Smith.

Around the country, the Bills are currently worse than irrelevant. We are borderline non-existent.

  3. .Don't you first hire a HC, have the HC get a OC, THEN get a QB that said HC/OC wants? Why would anyone sign the QB first unless it's the second coming of P. Manning?

As San Jose Bills Fan asked, why do things in series when you can do them in parallel?

Your sequential, compartmentalized decision making process is not how this is going to work.

Also, the QB is arguably much more important than any head coach.

As I asked above, what would you rather have? Fitzpatrick plus greatest coach of all time, or great QB plus Chan Gailey?

I am not saying Smith is a great QB. But the point remains the same.

If Tom Brady was our QB I could coach the team, and we make the playoffs.

  4. Let's get real. This azzwipe reporter apparently doesn't know much.

    1) Smith purely a game manager... he can't create anything without a solid to outstanding running game.

    2) Why would Alex Smith even come to Buffalo knowing full well they are going to draft his heir apparent on day one of the draft? He's not going to start for more than a year, if that, and then be relegated to #2 status.

    3) What's the difference betwen Smith and Fitz. Stronger arm, OK, but not the pocket presence that Fitz has

    4) Only when his HC highly micro managed him and the offense was he effective.

    5) His team brought in a rookie QB last year to specifically replace him and did exactly that in a little more than a season and one half. Does that tell you anything?

    6) He's a career 79.1 rated QB regardles up bumping up his rating to over 90 in 2011 and 100 in 2012. Is it Alex or the system? Remind me again why he lost his job.

    7) What exactly is the difference between Smith, Fitz, Grossman, Orton, Kolb, Henne, Stanton? They pretty much all suck equally, and none of them will get you to the playoffs by themselves... they would all unequivocally have to ride on the shoulders of a top three defense at the very least to get to the playoffs.

    Regarding your points:

    1) Have you noticed we have arguably the best backfield in the NFL? Also, it may take longer than you think to find the real deal QB solution for the long term.

    2) Does Smith have a no trade clause? If not, his opinion about being traded to Buffalo is meaningless.

    3) The difference between Fitz and Smith? Are you serious? Fitzpatrick is literally not an NFL caliber QB. Smith was doing just fine on an admittedly great team and looked like the kind of guy who could lead the team to a Superbowl victory until he was injured.

    4) This is meaningless meta-discourse.

    5) Doesn't change the fact that he would immediately greatly improve the Bills in 2013.

    6) You are overlooking the most important stats regarding Smith: those he has put up recently.

    7) We don't need Smith to get us to the playoffs by himself. We just need an immediate and massive improvement over Fitz, which Smith provides.

  5. I never heard of Mike Freeman and I hope he is wrong. Alex Smith in Buffalo would be like Ryan Fitzpatrick 2.0. How many good seasons has he had in the NFL?

For a long time he was considered a bust (similar to Jemarcus Russell) until Harbaugh turned him around and even then it had much to do with the 49er's improving as a team overall.

This would be a desperation move by the Bills and it would cost them multiple draft picks including their own 1st rounder. Bad idea!! This would be like Oakland acquiring Carson Palmer from Cinci for multiple picks and that has been a COMPLETE disaster!!!!

Alex Smith may not exactly be the perfect melding of Montana, Marino, and Elway, but to compare him, in ANY way, to Fitzpatrick is just stupid.

He is probably the best QB that could realistically be added to the Bills for next season.

  6. I find the speculation kind of amusing when we don't even have a coaching staff at the moment. I have trouble thinking that this "new direction" the bills are taking would involve trading for a QB without the coaching staffs' opinion.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Obviously this CBS report saying "it's all but guaranteed" is a bit over the top and absurd...

However, these decisions/directions for the team do not have to be made in a vacuum.

Do you not think that the topic of QB is coming up in the coaching interviews?

I would imagine Brandon and company are talking to each candidate and saying something like "We are thinking of going hard for Alex Smith. What do you think about that? Can you work with him? How do you like him as a player? Can you build an offense around him?"

And I'm sure other QB names are being mentioned as well, if the Bills think there is someone else who might be attainable and is equally or more attractive.

It all blends together and fits together. Coach, approach to game, QB.

    At least it should!

  7. If CBS wants some variety, they can all make us CBS employees for the day and we can make up stuff.

I'm sure the Bills have made no decisions on QBs because that will largely depend on the style of the head coach/coaching staff they ultimately hire. They aren't going to make that decision without that input.

For example, in the world of possibilities, Buffalo Bills head coach Chip Kelly has no use for a QB like Alex Smith.

Then maybe Chip Kelly isn't the right coach for the Bills.

Think about it: which Bills team do you like more in 2013? Fitzpatrick at QB, but the greatest coach of all time on the sidelines? Or would you rather have a solid QB while retaining someone like Chan Gailey?

I'll take the good QB every time.

I agree that there is a nexus between which QB we end up with for next year and the coach we hire. But getting the best QB possible should be the priority over coach, not the other way around!

  8. If you don't understand that Alex Smith would be an immediate, massive improvement to this team, you're a fool.

Is he a dream QB for the long term? Of course not!

Can we hypothetically do much better? Of course!

But would he instantly improve our offense? YES OF COURSE HE WOULD.

Get this guy on board if possible, and then continue to pursue the "real deal" solution for the long term.

  9. Meh. What do you expect? This is a whole lot of nothing to worry about. You're making something encouraging - that the new man at the top of the chain believes in a 21st century operation based on statistics, has and will bring in more staffers who know what do with it, and a GM who says he has to learn and wants to use it - into another topic of complaint. Classic Bills fan move. I chuckle when I hear people talk about how we're the greatest fans, because they're always omitting the "at whining and beliggerent alcoholism" part.

What did I expect? For the "new era" Bills to fire Nix along with Chan.

Some of Brandon's first words referenced a new start with a focus on the Bills being a proactive, energetic, hard charging organization.

A lot of what he said sounded right and was said with conviction. The picture of the future he painted does not include people like Nix. He represents the past, not the future.

  10. At the PC, someone asked Nix how familiar he is with the upcoming "analytics department".

I found Nix's response very disheartening. He said something like "I don't know a heck of a lot about all that new-fangled fancy book learnin' stuff, but I'm about to find out!"

Shows his age and just how far out of the loop he is in 2013. The future of NFL success does not involve people of Nix's generation.

With Nix remaining, the "new future" announced today remains half-baked.

  11. Press Conference soon.

Of critical importance here is learning the relationship between Brandon and Ralph in terms of $$$.

How much financial decision making will Russ have? Absolute? Can he decide to take an operational loss if necessary to improve the product? Can he hire a $10 million head coach if he thinks that's a good idea?

If Ralph retains last word power on things like that, this is not a huge development.

  12. This may make what was a very odd, amorphous situation at 1 Bills Drive much more concrete and known to franchise outsiders.

In other words, this could help bring in a better coach, b/c the overall situation of "how things work" with the Bills is now clarified.

And Brandon did just have dinner with Gruden, didn't he?

The one thing we CAN offer a top shelf coaching candidate is "total control and ability to run your own show".

With this move, maybe that is precisely what they have planned.

  13. Presumably Ralph's mental health has deteriorated to the point where he simply cannot continue.

This could be a GOOD thing. A 94 year old owner, from a decision making perspective, has effectively been replaced by a much younger, sharp guy in Russ Brandon.

As long as Brandon leaves football decisions to football people, this can't be bad.

  14. Wouldn't it be crazy if the press conference involves a video presentation from Ralph, looking rather spiffy after a custom grooming session?

I know there is a .1% chance of that happening, but if "the video" is going to be shown, that would probably be the time to do it.

When it is NOT shown, we can officially put that crap to bed.
