CB - Top 4 set in stone.  Lewis' versatility also makes him a lock.  The question is can Hardy and/or Ingram show enough to earn a job.

Lewis will make it but as the 4th safety behind Bishop, Rapp and Edwards. Hamlin will be cut.

This is the path to keeping both Hardy and Ingram IMO.

We currently only have 3 boundary corners that are locks (Kaiir, Rasul, Christian). I think with Hardy likely in the mix on specials, and allowing Lewis to be a bit of a Swiss Army knife, Damar becomes expendable.

They’ve kept Ingram around for the past few seasons, and much like Lewis, must like him in their system.

The only curveball here is if we get a late addition, a la Micah Hyde, who could come in and shake things up.

It's possible that McD will use more 4-3 this season.

But the long-term trend in the NFL is toward more Nickel and Dime defenses.  It would seem weird if McD reversed himself.

    Certainly possible.

As previously discussed in numerous threads, the trends of the NFL offensive and defensive chess match is constantly ebbing and flowing.

As soon as teams started with the full on aerial assault, defensive moved back into the two she’ll look.

As a counter to the 2 high, teams are becoming increasingly comfortable running the ball into those looks.

Transitioning back to a more traditional 4-3 on certain downs could be a reality. Especially considering the type of players they’ve invested in at LB over the last few years (Bernard, Dorian, the new kid) I could see them wanting to have the LB depth to feel they can be more versatile out of the 4-3 base.

That said, I highly doubt we see it as something that takes over. This would mean taking Taron Johnson out of the game for extended snaps. He is one of the best nickle corners and doesn’t get nearly enough credit for mixing it up in the box in the run game as he deserves.

  3. Kaiir Elam turns 23 today. Happy Birthday! People wanting to trade him need to look no further than the state of the secondary to see he is one play away from playing significant time.

Got me thinking about the entirety of the secondary, and how the roster might shake out of the back end of the defense. Last year, the Bills carried 11 defensive backs onto their opening day roster. Below is how I have 10 current players slated in:

    Boundary CB: (4 last year)

    Rasul Douglas

    Christian Benford

    Kaiir Elam

    ?????????

    Nickel CB:

    Taron Johnson

    Daequon Hardy

    Safety

    Mike Edwards

    Taylor Rapp

    Cole Bishop

    Damar Hamlin

    Chameleon:

    Cam Lewis

Extras battling for 1 boundary spot?

    Kendall Williamson - 6’” 203 lbs 7th round 2023

    Ja’Marcus Ingram - 6’ 2” 190 lbs UDFA 2022

    Kyron Brown - 6’1” 195 lbs UDFA 2019

I think it is possible they’ll only carry 3 boundary CBs with Cam Lewis filling in as the emergency 4th player (also available at nickle). Based on the state of the LB depth, they might be more willing to carry an extra backer than one of the 3 above listed guys who have mostly spent time on PS anyways. Feeling pretty good about the state of these rooms.

  4. Kyle Williams - good character guy, fits right in to the need at DT

Shady McCody - A little juice to the backfield

Two is tough-  can’t decide between the 3

    Mario

    Peters

    Moulds

note- Kinda sorta should be TO for those that want a WR based on the OP

    Mario was a good selection.

I almost went with Peter’s but didn’t know how he’d fit into the current rotation

Interesting highlights.  I think his college tape is more impressive than Groot's.

However, when you look at the size differential (Solomon vs. OT), he kind of looks like a blitzing CB up against an offensive lineman.  Yet he gets by those guys with a variety of moves.  I wonder how well his skills will translate to the NFL at his size.

(Yeah, I know he's only a few pounds lighter than Von.  But, to me, he looks small for an edge.  Maybe I'm wrong?)

There is no doubt the level of competition he faced will not be up to par with that of NFL caliber tackles. It’s almost the complete opposite of Sedrick Van-Pran Granger. All of his reps and experience came battle tested vs the SEC and the highest level of competition. Solomon was raking up stats against the likes of Louisiana Monroe. Not to knock his production, but I do think a fair question is will his smaller stature and reliance of athleticism be able to translate to more athletic, bigger, experienced offensive lineman.

I agree, his highlights look like he is a dog chasing a piece of meat, and I’m excited to see how that quick twitch translates. In a couple of those clips, he seems to really be able to use his speed, and counter off of it. Specially I’ve seen him rush the edge and come back through the inside shoulder of the tackle. Can he do this vs the next level of talent? Time will tell. I still think it was an exciting selection as even adding a layer of speed/athleticism gives us something that our DEs currently do not have.

One additional question I have that may be some explaination to that I’ve skipped over or missed, is why his sack, tackle numbers and games started dipped down significantly in 2022. I think it could be injury related?

    As I've said multiple times...

There is literally next to no chance.. a short-armed , smaller center who struggles with technique .. could beat out a NFL starter... With center experience in college... And is now one of the strongest biggest centers in the league

It will be next to impossible to beat him out in 1 year... Maybe next season or the year after

You're not unseating an the NFL veteran who is big for his position year 1... Who is starting quality

I don’t necessarily see it this way.

I would think that there is some risk/benefit analysis to injecting SVPG in at center. Where as you see it through the lense that he is unseating McGovern, could it not also be seen as it allowing him to stay at LG?

I think Kromer and the staff with have to weigh what combination can be most effective. Would Edwards/McGovern be a stronger duo than McGovern/Van Pran-Granger while allowing Edwards to stay as 6th in and primary IOL back up?

A move like this allows for a single change up front, keeping the Dawkins/McGovern duo in tact. With a McGovern move to C, you now have an entirely new combination at LT/LG along with the change to how the guards will mesh with the C

Just to add to my previous post about the YPRR thing. This goes back to 2015. 1,000 yard season producers in the NFL are highlighted in bold.

    A little scary, no?

(also, Hi Justin Shorter, we see you)

Is there a list of the >2.0 YPRR 1000 yards or can it be assumed all other are over this data point?

Edit: let me restate to get to my point: is there a list a players who are >2 YPRR that were not 1000 yard guys?

  8. Jason Kelce was 280 when he came into the league. At just shy of 300, I see why people mock him solely as a Center. Mitch Morse wasn’t all that heavier. I am not to concerned about his size. With a monster of Torrence and McGovern on either side, I would imagine he’d be fine up front in the ground game. Especially considering how much we like to move our C, his athleticism is huge. My biggest concern would be getting caught in 1v1 match ups in pass pro with some of the bigger, more explosive DTs in the league. Can he hold up?

At the end of the day, I wouldn’t get caught up in arm length or how heavy he is. If the guy can hang (years as a starter in SEC and national champs should suggest this) then he should play.

Yes, let's use the abysmal performance of the WR room the second half of last year as the low bar threshold by which to measure what will be considered acceptable performance or not this year. The offense struggled. Maybe it won't with Brady and the new players, but I'm not all that confident about it. Kincaid is going to have to be the main target, I think, so I hope he has a leap and not a sophomore slump year.

Who said it was acceptable? I said there is no doubt they can do better. The way I see things, the shift in philosophy to Brady lead to a much quicker passing game designed to attack horizontally and gain YAC. There is a reason they brought in guys like Samuel and Coleman. Stef Diggs catching a bubble screen for 3 yards ain’t cutting it.

My point in bringing up the old stats: They went 6-3 over that stretch, including the OT loss to the Eagles and the 12 men on the field botched Broncos L.

  10. Diggs last 9 REGULAR SEASON game totals

    42-457-2 (4 grabs for 50 yards/game)

Davis last 7 REGULAR SEASON game totals (2 DNP)

    15 - 310 - 2 ( 2 grabs for 44 yards/game)

Samuel and Coleman should undoubtedly be able to fill those shoes, and then some.

Take a step back off the ledge.
