I regularly see similar remarks, usually from people who identify as Democrats, targeted at me. The mockery tends to focus on my deafness or my challenges with language. I understand why you're walking back your comment now. But I'd respectfully suggest that the original statement may have resonated more deeply with your constituents than the apology did- because many of them already use language like that toward people like me.
