1. Listen to TD's press conference--audio is archived on bb.com. He did not put a timetable on Lawyer's return (using the words indefinitely). But he did answer a question during the Q&A -- where TD says something to the effect--- "Everyone heals differently, if Lawyer says he will be ready for Jacksonville, I would not discount this. He has never missed a regular season game."

  2. Happy for Travis. He and Matthews (if its Matthews) can compete for the back-up spot when he is ready to come back.

Sounds like Lawyer is determined to play.

This is about the best possible scenario....

Now lets get Jennings and Price healthy and start to get the true starting offensive line and top OL back-ups in shape for the opener...

  3. Not much -- but here it is .. new news is Milloy surgery...

QB TRAVIS BROWN—Is scheduled to have an MRI today on his injured knee. Coach Mike Mularkey should have the results on Monday following practice.

SS LAWYER MILLOY—X-rays during last night’s game confirmed that he suffered a broken forearm and he underwent successful surgery Sunday morning to repair it. There is no timetable for his return at this point in time.

CB TROY VINCENT—X-rays during last night’s game on his jaw were negative. Coach Mike Mularkey will have an update on his condition on Monday following practice.

QB JP LOSMAN—Underwent successful surgery last Thursday to repair his broken leg.

  4. He seems to bounce from team to team and did an adequate job last season in Oakland in the backup role.  If not Mirer, perhaps Ron Powlus, Jarious Jackson or maybe we could even lure Steve Beuerlein out of retirement.  Hell, how about Theismann or Montana?

No, but seriously, what about Rick Mirer?

    11363

    We need touchdown Jesus

Wasn't Clements Mirer's QB coach in college??? Maybe he could get something out of the Indiana kid that noone else has been able to..Also wasn't Mirer #2 the year Drew was #1...gosh the universe may implode.....

  5. Its questionable at best that we would trade a player to get the back-up QB..but if we did here is some potential trade bait for a back-up QB--has to be a need position...

    1) Bobby Shaw or Sam Aiken

    2) Ron Edwards or Justin Bannan

    3) Kevin Thomas (rely on Jabari Greer and Rashard Baker as the 6th DB)

    4) Ken Simonton or Joe Burns (questionable we could get anything here).

The signing bonuses on all these guys are minimal so the cap hit to trade is far outweighed by the savings in base salary. Remember in the case of Shaw, Aiken, Thomas and Edwards--you have to give up something to get something--packaging 3 cases of tape, Mike Pucillo, Juan Esposito and David Porter isn't going to get a back-up QB...

The problem is the cap would have to work and we are only $1 million under right now--we would probably have to replace a couple of top 52 player salaries with UDFA minimums to get someone with a higher base salary in. Signing a backup with a higer base probably seals Gildon's fate.

  6. I agree, but now SD will wait to cut him to see if they can get a trade...I don't know what his contract status is either--we may not have the cap room unless he is cut....

    If it happens....

First meeting with MM and Sam---

MM: Doug--you are not here to compete for the starters job on the field or in the locker room. The first sign of any BS, you are on the street. You play if Drew is hurt--that's it....no mop up duty, second team reps in practice, etc.

    SW: You understand that squirt....

    DF: Yes I understand....

  7. I know its one of 96 QB jobs in the NFL--but being one of about 70,000 who was cheering loudly when Redskin Rob got sacked last year at the Ralph, I really doubt if the self-described Buffalo Anti-Christ is interested in coming back to WNY as a Bill anytime soon....He probably has told his agent (Can't remember if its Dunn or Steinberg) not to even contact TD...

  8. Ugly play, but I blame the coaches for it. I don't like pass plays when it's 3rd and 3 and you're in field goal range...unless they are stacked against the run, whcih they weren't. YOu know the D is gonna try to push you back out of FG range with a sack...so call a fuggin draw, pick up the first, and continue. Argh.

You know nod--we did this on a couple of plays last night....3rd and 4 or so...we ran--we need to practice this a lot, since we hardly did this at all last year...I think that defines a true commitment to the run...do you run when the tendency dicatates a better than average call for the pass.

The other thing I am still a little frustrated with is the lack of use of the screen or circle routes in this case...maybe they are practicing this stuff--but if you let the line through and run the receivers deep--that puts a lot of pressure on LB's to cover our backs- I like that matchup and we haven't seen it yet...

I had a thought last night--when we go 3 or 4 wides on the field in these situations--why not line Reed up in the backfield or in a tight slot and have him run a middle screen--I think that would be quite effective.

The truth is while the play call mix has been good, there is a lot of the playbook that we haven't seen yet--I am hoping that some of it makes into the game plan for Jacksonville and Oakland...

  9. Thanks Kelly--From your analysis I would form the opinion that the starting 5 is fine and even depth in the middle and Marcus Price are adequate back ups...

Sullivan needs to go -- he is just not motivated enough to be a good player. The key is to get Jonas back sometime this week and let the starting 5 work together for the next couple of weeks in practice.

We are in real trouble if we get past the third tackle (Price) and past the third guard (Tucker)...there's not too many NFL teams who wouldn't be in trouble in this case.....

  10. 1. Teflon Tom should have taken action to correct the problem with his OC. There is no excuse that justifies tanking the season to preserve some misguided perception from the outside world. Especially since he had MM in his pocket as the next coach - and he wouldn't have cared if Gilbride was fired in mid-season.

Just like Al Davis and Mike Brown had MM in their pocket when they offered him their head coaching jobs....TD left Pittsburgh as part of an argument with the head coach over shared power--what part of that would attract MM to Buffalo and more importantly put him in TD's pocket...nice revisionist history.

  11. One thing that could happen is that the grouping of Evans, McGahee and Losman will become tighter through this...JP hasn't had to rehab an injury like this and Evans and McGahee have had major injuries twice. I can already see this little support group forming....which would be nice for cohesion in 2005 and/or 2006 when they are the triplets...

  12. This is more of an indictment on Donahoe that it is anyone else.  Donahoe had to know what was going on, but still let Williams finish the season as HC.  This is Donahoe's 4th year... and for Wilson to justify keeing this phony, the bills are going to need to make some serious noise this season. I don't see that happening... and if it doesn't, I think Donahoe ought to do the right thing and resign... don't force Ralph to fire his ass and have to eat a year of his salary while he does his BS analysis for his buddies at espn.  Donahoe needs to be thrown in O'reilly's "no spin zone" and confronted with his performance as the Bills GM over tha past 3 plus years.

    8656

Ralph is there most of the time during the season also....why stop at the GM why not indict the owner in this to. Where was Ralph? <_<

A head coach needs to control his staff. The GM/President has enough to do with NFL, talent and team administration responsibilities. Look no further than Oakland to see what happens when you have a meddling owner or front office staff....you end up with rejects from coaches like Sean Payton and Norv Turner as your head coach....Instead the Bills job ended up being one of the most sought after jobs this past off-season. We could have had anyone we interviewed, although waiting for Weis may have hurt from a staff perspective--we could have had him...we chose Mike Mularkey who had rejected the Raiders and Bengals in the past....TD is a big reason why Mularkey is here...

  13. Thanks for the running summary nod. I don't think anyone is shocked by this. Its something we all strongly suspected. I would have the same feeling if OJ all of the sudden stood up on the 18th green tomorrow and said -- "I did it"

Its unbelievable that Gilbride is still in the NFL...but then again he's working for Tom Coughlin and Brenda Warner.

Just adds more credence to showing some optimism around here...you have to have high level coaching and talent to succeed, we were lacking in one category last year---that seems to have been addressed.

GW could have had Tom Clements two years ago--that's who TD was pushing....at the time GW felt he needed experience....who knew what a fatal mistake that was.

  14. There are several Bills who I think fall into the category of underappreciated. The notoriety they gain is not commensurate with the contributions they make on the field....which Bills player do you think is the most underappreciated and why?

I would go with London Fletcher. He was put into the background (and probably justifiably so) when we signed TKO last year, but he still led us in tackles, he acts as the QB of the defense and now is poised to become a key contributor on the KO return team by being the keystone of the wedge and blowing people up....He's always in the play on D -- and he seldom misses tackles--he makes up for a lack of height with better than average speed in coverage. He is a true 4 down contributor. We got him for a relative bargain ($3.5 million per year on a 5 year deal) and all he has done is lead us in tackles the last couple of years and become the heart and soul of the defense......

So i want to say #59 Thanks for all you do.....(bud light real American hero music in background) B)

  15. I feel really bad for JP. This will hurt his development for this season but he seems to have the right work ethic to keep studying, watching film and then mixing in his rehab.

I can't even respond to the suggestion of benching Vincent, its so far from the universe in which I believe I live I can't comprehend it...
