1. I suppose I may be able to live with that, but the problem would still be, where would the line be drawn? If they are allowed to have equal rights, who else would ask for them as well? Roommates? A son supporting his mother? A couple of best friends trying to cheat the system?

    115099

I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think a reasonable American would be considering equal rights with their roommate or mother...as liberal as I am..please don't make me have a union with my mom. no matter what the laws of this land are...people will always try to cheat the system

  2. But was it once not a standard of our society not to marry someone of the same sex?? The point is, standards can change.  I don't think letting some homosexual couples get life insurance is the problem, it is about the sanctity of marriage and the chaos that could ensue afterwards once the dam is broken.

    115092

Yes the standards change...some every day...I want my gay friends to be recognized as a couple in society with equal rights as any hetersexual in a union...it does not have to be through marriage, but if it is recognized by marriage I have no problem. Please explain the millions of Americans that have little respect for the institute of marriage by getting divorced....hey I even friends that consider themselves part of the Christian Right...some divorced once some divorced twice. How can that be explained. In today's society, obviously marriage is not revered as in decades past

  3. You can't be serious with this.... First of all, incestuous couples don't have to have babies. They could easily get married and not have kids. Second...could you please explain to me how homosexuals could ever give birth to a child???

    115083

Are you serious...how do you think that Rosie O'Donnell had her kids...two were adopted...one by vitro

  4. Haha, my post actually said that something can't be true just because it is someone's opinion.  I am asking for you to give me a reason why homosexuality is ok and incest is not other than saying "more people think homosexuality is ok". No one has yet to do that.  This tells me that there would be no way to keep incest out of marriage if we allow homosexuals to get married.  What would we tell people who want to marry their brothers and sisters?? "Uh... ummmm... well, not enough people think this is ok to do, so we can't allow it??" After homosexuals are allowed to wed, a snowball effect will occur forcing the country to allow pretty much anyone to get married.  UNLESS, someone here can tell me what makes incest and homosexuality different, other than the current opinions of Americans.

    115067

I simply feel that homosexuals are part of the fabric of our society...and yes I have very close gay friends that are living together, in a committed relationship. They have been together 15 years....they deserve rights afforded any other civil union. Its a standard of our society not to marry your sister, its also a standard not to have many wives or marry a pig, so no, it won't spiral out of control. Why does it bother you so much that a gay couple can get life insurance together. I wonder how many gays or lesbians are part of GWB's administration

  5. I apologize, I wasn't trying to say what a horrible Christian you are.  I was simply trying to clarify the point Fergy was trying to make.  He was trying to say you can't call yourself a practicing Catholic if you don't believe everything Catholics believe. (Pro-life, abstinance)

    115062

I understand that.....if I have a strong belief in my faith...that is all that matters...I feel God made us to be free thinkers....no I don't believe in every published Catholic belief or opinion, but no person will decide if my way of professing my faith is right or wrong

  6. My point wasn't so much that sooo many people believed those things. It was more so that just because some people believed it to be ok, it didn't make it ok.

All I am saying is, you are going to need to come up with a better argument than "half the country thinks it's ok" to tell me that homosexuality is less wrong than incest.

    115041

IU'm sorry you opinion has to be right.........our opinions could not hold any water

  7. He is trying to say that by saying you are a "practicing Catholic", you are giving an impression of yourself that is not correct.  If you truly were a practicing Catholic, you would not be doing the things Fergy mentioned in the previous thread.  His point is, or at least I think is,  many "Catholics" are simply catholics by birth or by name, and do not actually live by what they preach, so to call themsevles Catholics is not a correct description.

    114995

Sorry but please share your beliefs with us,...tell us what a wondeful christian you are on a daily basis. I was raised to believe that my beliefs are something that you do not speak out about in public

  8. No, I'm just trying to say that the terms 'practicing Catholic', 'devout Christian', etc. have very broad and loose definitions. Prefacing a statement by giving yourself one of these labels automatically makes you prone to a huge amount of scrutiny. By your definition, I am also a practicing Catholic, but I would never label myself this when engaging in an argument such as this. You say you are a practicing Catholic, but you say that you don't force your views on anyone else. A few weeks ago at mass they encouraged us to recruit new members for the RCIA. Encouraging others to learn about your faith is not exclusive to born again Christians. When you say, "I'm a practicing Catholic...don't be so quick to judge...my relationship with God is mine....you get it... not yours", I think you contradict yourself a bit. Also, you become a stereotype of the KzooMike Catholic who only goes because that's what his parents told him to do since he was little. Then fundamental Christians use your example to make fun of all Catholics, giving the Mother Teresa's of this world a bad name. Don't claim to be a practicing Catholic unless you actually do everything the Church tells you to do. I think both presidential candidates made religious statements similar to this one in order to manipulate voters. John Kerry was constantly reminding people that he was Catholic, but he was divorced and pro-choice, which I thought were two ways to get you excommunicated.

I appreciate your concern for my soul

  9. Does that also include going to confession, attending mass on holy days of obligation, abstaining from premarital sex, abstaining from the use of any forms of birth control, taking a pro-life stance on abortion, etc., etc., etc.?  Does active in church activities mean you volunteer at bingo?

    114662

If I say no...are you going to hold me personally accountable???

  10. My father and stepmother are both highschool teachers.  It never seizes to amaze me hear their work stories.

    1) School banned cell phones from class.  Parents complained and now kids are allowed to have and use them during class.  If you should get a call during a test, no problem... just go outside until you are finished talking.

    2) One student was caught cheating on a test.  Even though the kid admitted to cheating, his parents appealed and the teacher was told to pass the kid no matter what.

    3) A mother told my dad her daughter didn't need to take US History because she was going to airline stewardess school in Florida after graduation.  The school board forced the school to remove history from her core requirements for graduation.

I could go on but the point is the same.  The taxpayer is always right and the teacher is always wrong.

    113919

I know every educator on this board can share the same sort of stories..I know I can

  11. But - and I mean no insult in this - you've said you work with special needs kids.  I don't know what "special needs" entails (and in the interest of honesty, "special needs" is my paraphrasing of what I got from your post), but I would submit that your experience isn't necessarily typical.

    113900

My students all have learning disabilities...they attend regular classes...biology, history...algebra....we help them with their areas of weakness...reading, writing...organization...study skills...but you meet these parents...you can tell they don't give a stevestojan about their child's education

  12. i think the piercing one is very weak as it is expression of personality and individuality. but as a whole the public school systems are very messed up.

    113863

Yes public schools have their problems....but i have students that come to school to escape their drunk mothers or abusive father. Nobody feels that the basic family unit bears any blame. My son was thought to be respectful to adults...got through high school and now is on scholarship in college...his mother and I along with his educators got him where he is...

  13. Jeez and if one is Arab you cant be for freedom.  Man go crawl back into that cave.

    113829

if it looks like an Arab...smells like an Arab...praises to Mecca like an Arab...its an Arab...you mean there are actually good Arabs in the world...I'd never get that impression on this board

  14. Well you've got my respect!  I'd last about a week.

If you don't like it, send 'em private or home school 'em.

It seems like I've seen more and more of this crap recently.  Parents that know better than school administrations when it comes to school rules. Lots of "my kid didn't do it" syndrome.

    113799

On this board you get slammed for being a public school teacher....i teach special education...none of my kids have to take any responsibility for their actions...its terrible..in my district parents get what they want....we are kinder, gentler....which i don't agree with...parents so enable their children...both good and bad

  15. What are you talking about?  Did I say he was misunderstood?  Did I say he brought the world together?  Did I say he stopped radicals? Did I say he was wonderful?  Did I even suggest that our rep should make a speech of any kind?  The answer to all that is: no.  What I did say was that what happens tommorow is more important than anyone's opinion of the now dead Arafat.  It is a question of diplomacy that is all.  I clearly pointed out that it was a difficult question and made no claim to owning all the wisdom on the issue.  In response, I get this hysterical rant from you.

Why do you bother?  Seriously, what do you get out of this kind of response?  There is no information being exchanged here, there is nothing being learned.  You might as well be flashing old ladies in the park.  Other than whatever preverse enjoyment you get out of it, there really is no point.

    113249

I think he is out of his league debating you on this
