1. There is a waiting list for the Prius - which is the butt-ugliest car on the road excepting only the Aztec and that Honda box-on-wheels. The Prius is got some high-tech whizbag stuff on the interior, which makes people forget the outside.

You can get Civic Hybrids without too much trouble. That's what we're getting, it looks just like a regular Civic and TCO is lower than Prius. We've decided that people who drive the Prius WANT everyone to know they're being conscientious, which is fine. But their cars are BUTT ugly.

I don't know about the Ford hybrid. I have had such bad experiences with America cars, particularly Ford, that there's no way I'd consider buying the first model.

  2. Neither Bush NOR Kerry has any say about "releasing" their records. They aren't "their" records, they are the military's records.

These newly-released records were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act as a result of a lawsuit by journalists.

Maybe you haven't seen it, but the woman who's husband got Bush the job for the months he was missing is starting to talk. He's now dead but she's got quite a story to tell - this guy was a trusted Bush family supporter and they turned to him to get Shrub out of the limelight when he started to embarrass the family (if they thought he was bad THEN I can imagine what they're thinkig now). He kept quiet out of loyalty for years. I'm surprised you haven't seen it yet. But, you will, I'm sure. Along with the guy who's now confessing how sorry he is that he pulled strings for Bush and others to get into the Guard so they wouldn't have to go to 'Nam.

The minute Bush donned the flightsuit he was fair game for this. He boasted of his "service" ... so someone's called him on it. It's no secret in TX what went on, and it's now all about to come out.

Speaking of "out" - if you think the McGreevy thing was an isolated case, stay tuned. The next governor to be outed will do so kicking and screaming ... but as the divorce proceeds it will all be made clear. I posted it here months ago...I wonder who remembers? Hint: top aide suddenly resigned within the past week with no explanation. Wink, wink. Not that I care who sleeps with who, but nothing gives me so much enjoyment as watching a hypocrite exposed! ;)

  3. Schneider isn't the only one, of course. Chances are I won't be doing business with them directly, I don't have a need, but maybe someone here does so I thought I'd share it.

"Schneider extends benefits to its deployed military employees

Schneider National Inc, Green Bay WI, is extending differential pay and benefits from six to 18 months for its associates who have been called to active duty by the National Guard and reserve units of the armed forces. According to the company, deployed associates now receive differential pay and benefits, including medical, dental and retirement savings. Schneider National also offers a number of initiatives that provide support to associates' families during their absence and guarantees all associates serving with the National Guard and reserve units jobs upon their return from active duty."

  4. Summer's over, the teachers and kids are back to school -- and these numbers are not adjusted for seasonal variation.

    21022

That's true - I found the growth in retail interesting because it tends to bear out what one constantly hears, that the growth tends to be in lower-paying jobs (that is, the jobs that are lost are not being recovered by comparable jobs). So even if the 132,000 jobs to have been added in August happened, over half were retail jobs which don't replace the typically-lost white collar jobs. I guess if I had time I would cross-reference this with the BLS statistics but I'm pretty sure it would come out that yesterday's manager of 5 people at $60k a year is today's cashier at $7.00 an hour.

  5. Here's something that came thru today in a digest I get. It appears to have come from Bloomberg, but I don't have a direct link and the digest is for subscribers only. It's brief - of interest is the proportion of the "new" jobs that are in retail:

Corporations Announce Plans to Cut 74,000 Jobs in August

Large U.S. corporations announced plans in August to cut 74,150 jobs, a 7.2% decrease from a year earlier but a 6.6% increase from the month before, placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said Tuesday.

August's total was the most since February, the report said. However, plans for job cuts through the first eight months of 2004 have fallen 23% compared with 2003.

The figures are not adjusted for seasonal variations, making it difficult to compare them from one month to the next, Bloomberg said.

Announced plans to hire, which Challenger tracked for the first time in May, rose to 132,105 in August from 26,880 a month earlier, Bloomberg said. The biggest additions will come from retailers, who announced plans to hire 83,450 new employees.

  6. Is that according to your intelligence sources?  Yeah, I thought so.

    19818

Note the use of the word "supposedly" in the post.

So you think Russia should join in with those powerhouses like Cameroon and send troops to Iraq? Why? There's no evidence that the plot originated in Iraq.

My intelligence sources are about as good as yours. Maybe better - I've never seen your name coupled with the word "intelligence" anywhere on this board.

  7. Well they can either blow Chechnya off the face of the earth or just let them go. Pull their troops out and let all the groups fight each other until they wipe each other out.

Sending troops to Iraq would make no sense whatsoever. It was Chechnyan separatists, supposedly, not Al Qaeda or any of the other groups now congregating in Iraq courtesy of Operation Enduring Quagmire. Sending troops to Iraq for something that a totally unrelated groiup did is about as stupid as what Bush did. Putin is many things but stupid is not high on the list.

  8. DirecTV customers who religiously pay their bills for all the services they enjoy are footing the bill for your free football games. They have to pay $120+ a year to get them. The fact that you got the access through an insider just means he's part of the crime as well.

There's no difference between what you're doing and colluding with a store clerk to get $50 in change back for a $10 bill, or to look the other way while you steal an occasional six-pack. It's still a crime and the costs are passed along to your fellow Americans.

  9. Operation Truth is a Veterans' group established by veterans of Desert Storm / Enduring Freedom and Enduring Quagmire. Its advisory board is vet-studded and includes Jesse Ventura.

The blogs there are interesting. It's a chance to hear from some soldiers who are there as well as those who have served there. It is a nonpartisan organization; you can read about its mission on the site.

I suppose that to the extent that the material on this site is irritating or puts one candidate or another in a poor light, it will be dismissed, but that would be a disservice to the men and women who have served and are serving, since they are the source of the information.

In any event there are so many people on this board who claim to care for our troops a great deal, I thought this site might be of interest.

  10. How does one "stop looking for a job?"  I've always been curious about that.  Do they just abandon everything they owe money on and move into a cave someplace?  If that's the case, how are they able to poll them?

Hey everyone.  I stopped looking for a job.  That's right.  I'm just gonna stay home, not eat, not pay my bills, and see how long I can keep that up.  There's got to be a breakable record someplace.

Everytime someone brings up that idea, I think of "History of the World."  Did you bull stevestojan?

    18516

You could read the report where it describes how they make the determination. I don't make it, the goverment does. If you don't like it, write a letter to the government, explaining your credentials in the area and offer something better. Until then, it is what it is. I expect that a number of people who aren't actively looking are doing odd jobs and other stuff "under the table", living with relatives, babysitting, whatever.

  11. Well here's an easy way to settle the argument, just go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site and you can read all about it. You can see the statistics and what they mean.

If you do, you'll be able to see the number of people who are unemployed, the number of people who are not looking any more and other groupings.

Of interest is the increase of long-term unemployed. That number is rising and is up over the previous August 2003 high. For those who are working, a recent $.05 per hour increase in pay is probably welcome news.

Anyway read it for yourselves and draw your own conclusions. Unless you prefer to have the media digest and regurgitate it for you, telling you what to "think".

  12. Time-Warner AOL is the name of the company now.

Only here will you see any whoop de doo about the Time "poll". You read the fine print and disclaimers and see why. Even the GOP was saying at the time they didn't expect a bounce, the race is too tight.

Generally the Zogby poll is on target. As I recall it was pretty much on for the 2000 election too.

  13. Interesting take on Miller's speech by Mccain: it could come back to haunt Bush, says McCain.

    link

You need to log in to get to the story. It's the Chicago Tribune but no doubt will be picked up elsewhere.

McCain continues to mystify me. Kerry is one of McCain's best friends, his own party treats him like crap and he takes it. Perhaps they have something on him from those Keating 5 days, who knows. It's a shame, I think McCain is a man of integrity otherwise and would be happy to vote for him for President.

  14. It probably just hasn't made it's way to blzrulistan or whatever your little world is named.  It was all over the news this morning...

    About halfway down...

Thanks for the link. I see that it was ONE protestor attacking ONE officer. When I read the initial topic it gave me the impression that a gang of protestors beat the guy up. But that's not what happened.

One a-hole is all it takes I suppose but painting millions of people nutso because of this one guy is like...like...painting an entire country with a bullseye because you don't like their leader or their religion or their lifestyle.

Of course it's still bad but this article says he's not injured badly which is good and I am grateful for that. But let's try not to be so divisive eh? Things are bad enough already.
