1. In the Seattle area houses are sold in a matter of days, not weeks. Why? Because the supply is low. Up here there are strict ordinances in place to keep this area beautiful and help preserve the ecosystem. So, they don't bulldoze the trees to build more houses, they just let people fight over the existing supply or move into something way out and live through the commute from hell daily. The house I bought is worth $500k; I bought it for less than than in June. When I was in Texas I could have had it for half that price. And, the appreciation rate in this area is 12% YOY. I think Southern California's situation is even more pronounced.

As mentioned earlier, go for location. There are stable areas where whatever you buy will hold its value. It may not appreciate as quickly but it won't lose in value over time.

My sister had a house at the Jersey shore several years ago. Bought in the 80's during a boom, in the early 90's it was worth less than they owed on the mortgage. They held, and by the end of the 90's they sold it for twice what they paid for it, so it worked out.

If you're buying a place so you'll own the property and are planning on staying there, then don't worry about it, you will probably come out ok in the long run if you choose wisely. But if you're looking to turn in around in a few years at a profit that could be risky.

Assuming the 5.75 is a 30 year mortgage that's pretty good. Watch out for points and hidden fees and early payoff penalties.

  2. Bush didn't twitch as much, but it was there. Instead he strutted around like a little rooster. He did better this time, the town hall is his milieu. I agree that Kerry's abortion answer was pretty incoherent but several of Bush's were likewise.

Bush teed up a few for Kerry last night that he could have hit out of the park had he chosen to, or perhaps he didn't notice. When Bush was cornered on Iraq and started to blame his generals I would have loved to hear Kerry say that getting bad advice may not have been his fault but as President the buck stops with him...shoot, even JFK took the blame for the Bay of Pigs, which he inherited from Nixon and Eisenhower, because it happened on his watch and he was responsible.

Bush's inability to admit to ever making a mistake is something to behold.

And I thought his jokes were pretty un-Presidential. Not necessarily the words but the delivery. He giggled! He's a joke.

But as I said, even though he acted on occasion like the village idiot I will admit he did far better than the first debate.

  3. Lets say there is a huge terrorist attack now, lots of Americans die on our soil. How will Kerry look if he says "Look at Bush, he can't even prevent this from happening. If you vote for me, I'll take care of these guys"

He'll be viewed as an insensitive power hungry a-hole and un-American challenging the President right after an attack.

Basically, his hands will be tied, and Americans will look to their president for leadership, which you have to admit Bush was pretty damn good at in Round 1 the months after.

If such a thing were to happen I don't think Kerry would have to say a thing, especially if it was Al Qaeda. The American people aren't stupid. They'll wonder how it was that he didn't protect us. They gave him a pass before but he's been talking real big about a lot of things and the only thing he's delivered is a bunch of dead soldiers and civilians.

  4. I've read two of his books and seen two of his films. After the first book (seen before the films) I realized that if I took him literally I would become so despondent that suicide would be the only alternative.

Therefore I learned to think of his views as just that, his views. Some I agree with, many I don't, or at least I am not as zealous as he is.

I thought Bowling from Columbine had some good points in it and it was with that perspective I saw F911. Much of that movie was not news to me, so I paid no attention to the rhetoric and, as some would say, fantasy parts.

What impacted me was the interviews with the soldiers and footage of the war. You can't fake that and indeed there was little, if any, Moore voiceover. It wasn't needed.

Anyway I see two reasons why people would condemn the film without seeing it. One is purely that they are close-minded and probably judgemental about many things. Another is that it threatens their security; they're afraid in other words.

Interestingly enough, neither is a reason anyone would admit to. It's easier to say that the film maker is a fat #$@$ #@$@$ @#$@#$@ who's full of RKFast.

  5. Stop buying foreign products and stop increases in computerization and robotics. When I worked in process engineering in automotive, the skilled tradesmen used to stencil the names of fired employees onto the machines.  Use no computers. Don't demand lettuce in January, well out of season.

Don't waste your money with vacations out of town - spend your money in your own locality.

It's up to you to curb your desires...if you can. If you can't, read Rifkin's book, "End of Work".

    61794

Curbing one's desires is un-American. What would have happened if we never had Manifest Destiny? ;)

  6. No way.

Terrorists don't want Bush as president, and if they do something before the election, people are going to get behind Bush exactly like they did after 9-11 and Bush will win a landslide election. It would also prevent Kerry from doing anything, since you can't not support the president after an attack like that.

    61965

I don't know, Bill. The ONLY thing that Bush has to stand on these days is his supposed tough stance on terrorism. An attack would probably finish him.

  7. My husband listens to Limbaugh and he told me that in the early days Limbaugh DID pile all over drug addicts but that he ceased doing so a few years ago...perhaps coincidentially with his own addiction.

    He's a big fat hippo-crite but he's not stupid.

As a bit fat RICH hippo-crite he won't go to jail any more than Jeb's prescription-forging daughter. It's not like either of them is a poor junkie living on the streets or anything is it? We're expected to pity the former and condemn only the latter.

Neocons note: "sarcasm" was used in the creation of this post. So belay the exploding of heads.

  8. The libs seem to be missing a key point -- key to the future of success in this war on terror (no surprise).  Mission accomplished marked the end of combat operations in Iraq -- essentially the end of Saddam's rule and the beginning of the occupation force's rule.  Then another event happened -- the occupation force turned the reigns over to Iraqis in the form of a provisional government.  At the time the provisional goverment took power, they had the ability to ask the coalition forces to leave their country, yet they asked them to stay.  At this point, Iraq became an ally and in effect a member of the coalition.

Cheney was dead on when he said Kerry/Edwards are using the 90% figure to make a point, and in doing so are insulting the contributions and sacrifices of Iraqis.  Their scorched earth policy on Iraq is extremely dangerous.  If they win, my question is how much of a coalition will be left?  Why would any other country continue to stay in Iraq as part of the coalition if the American people decide even they don't have the will to stay the course?  The political pressure on leaders of our coalition partners will be enormous and they likely won't be willing to continue taking the heat after the trashing Kerry/Edwards gave them.

    59783

Like the freakin Iraqis had a choice. They got shocked and awed and invaded. They have 50% unemployment, intermittent electricity, and as long as they don't go out in public they're safe.

There was no way they'd ask us to leave their country. After 12 years of sanctions they don't have the capital, tools, materials or infrastructure to begin to rebuild their power plants, hospitals, schools, factories. We had them over a barrell.

In terms of numbers though the dead Iraqis - women and children - FAR outnumber Americans, it's true. But guess who they blame for that? And guess who's going to pay the price?

Allawi is a puppet like the Shah of Iran was a puppet and like all the puppets we put into place he'll turn on us some day, if he lasts in power.

Those who fail to learn from history....etc.

  9. Uh AD, you disappoint me.  You are always so quick to insult people or find flaws, yet you are showing an increasing tendancy to not read everything.  I prefaced my comments by saying that I was an "admittedly biased viewer".  Apparently PPP is not the place to come for discussion, but only to throw insults.

    59282

So you've only just figured that out? AD sits in the midst of his little spiderweb, in the dark literally and figuratively, and throws venom and stones. He offers no solutions. He has nothing postive to say about anything. And he has nothing nice to say, unless someone with an equally negative view of everything comes along.

  10. As Cheney was halfway through his answer to the first question our daughter turned to us and asked "is he answering the question? he's saying a lot of stuff but I don't think it's got anything to do with the question does it?".

I thought Edwards did ok; we all knew that the gloves would come off during this debate, which was better than the Cheney-Lieberman agree-a-thon of 2000.

Each scored points; most people don't vote based on the VP candidate anyway. IF Cheney had presidential aspirations (which he may but I believe him when he says not) his performance wouldn't have helped him but since most people think there's zero chance he'll ever be president his performance probably didn't hurt. How much CAN it hurt a guy who's disapproval rating is already over 50%?

  11. Right.  I want to see an alphabet or dictionary of hand signals that's both complex enough to express complex points very quickly, subtle enough to use in a national debate, and simple enough for George W. Bush to comprehend...

Watch the TiVo - you'll see what I mean.

  12. Wars are stupid and men are stupid for starting them. And this injury thing is just another version of "mine's bigger than yours" which is another stupid thing about men. As Joan Rivers says "grow up!".

Those Swiftboat Liars for Bush exist ONLY for two reasons: Kerry made an ass of O'Neill or whatever his name is back in the 1970's and there's a rich Texan who benefits from Bush's business-friendly policies and has nothing better to do with his money than fund someone with a personal vendetta.

  13. hey tenny, I know that you are a snot snorting liberal and basically you live to hate GWB, but can you please try to be oblective and anser this question?

You stated that "Bushies handlers made a 32 page list of demands". What is your source for this accusation? I did not see any such report, other then on air america where the screehers caimed that it was so. I say produce something or shut your pie hole. Its about time you started to spew at least 20% truth, and not 1005 hate filled speak.

    56260

Here you go Richie-poo. It's not 32 pages of demands, but a 32-page contract. You can take the difference up with Tenny. I am surprised this was news to you, you are always so well-informed.

    one link, of many.

I hear the one that the Bushies really fought is the town-hall type meeting where the people can ask questions. Apparently stacking the Bush rallies with only Bush supporters doesn't have our boy primed for potential questions such as "where's Osama? where are our jobs? where are the WMD's"?

But since Kerry may actually have pulled out a black pen, perhaps Bush can break a rule too, pull out his 6-shooter and blast away at anyone who asks a question that may tend to put him in an unflattering light. Pre-emptive answering, as it were.
