Originally, if you will look back in the thread, I wasn't really sticking up for Kerry's veracity, my problem was your post. You strongly complained about Kerry's veracity and cited two examples, both of which were wrong, one of which wasn't even remotely true. You cited a quote of Kerry's about subways and tunnels and used it as an example about cops and firemen.
Ultimately, what exactly these guys say in the debates is virtually useless. No candidate does what he promises in the campaigns when he gets into the White House because a) situations change over the years, b ) the job is a lot different once you get there than you think it is, and c ) there are people and groups pulling you in 1000 directions.
What quintessentially matters in this debate is extremely simple: Can people in middle America imagine Kerry in the White House, imagine him being tough on the War on Terror, and imagine him not screwing up as much as they perceive Bush screwing up. That is it, in total. Kerry's job is to convince them the answer is yes to those three things, and the politicking and parsing of words and (mis)using of numbers and statistics is the way that ALL politicians of ALL parties for ALL time in ALL countries have done it. It's how Bush works, it's how Kerry works.
How dare you make sense.

We'll leave the obvious question alone, of why any citizen over the age of 18 has not bothered to register until 30 days prior to the election at the thousands of places to register in Ohio.
But, I think it's rather disgusting that you can spout the idiocy of GOP mandating 80 lb card stock as a subtle nod to Jim Crow. Maybe Richio is behind all this.
Or are the Dem registrations up because of this?
First off, no-one said these people waited to register. Their CARDS are arriving. And why have deadlines? So in your books anyone who registers on the deadline is too late? What about all those people who mail their income taxes at 11:59 PM on April 15? That's what a deadline is for.
Second, I never mentioned Jim Crow. "Lower income city residents" are not necessarily of any one race, creed or color. You may be surprised. I lived in a city center amidst many lower-income city residents and they were a great diversity of ethnicities with one thing in common besides geography: low income, period.
Lastly, regarding the article, it could be either or both parties doing bogus registrations. It's a shame that zealots have to get so caught up that they break the law. In TX there were some really bad practices, for isntance the GOP-dominated election board (2 GOP, 1 Dem) would tell the Dem representative they'd meet at 10 am to review and certify the absentee ballots. The Dem would show up at 10 only to find that the GOP reps had been there "working" on them since 7 a.m. This is in Collin County, TX for anyone who's interested. And, unfortunately, it probably goes on in Democratic districts too.
But, it's hopefully a small percentage and the drive for voters is good news ONLY if they turn out to vote,.

Saw an article today that said that voter registration is at record highs.
In fact in Ohio registrations of Democrats is up 250% over 2000.
Naturally the GOP in Ohio has stepped in, decreeing that voter registration cards can ONLY be printed on 80 lb card stock. Anyone who receives a card NOT on 80 lb card stock will not be able to vote. So with 6 days left to register, people who wouldn't know paper stock from second base are supposed to re-register. This centers on the city centers where, naturally, many of the voters are lower-income registered Democrats.
I know paper stocks and 80 lb ain't cheap so I am sure that the bulk of them these days aren't printed on 80 lb. My TX card wasn't and neither was my WA card.
I have to admire their creativity. If you can't beat the vote, just stop it.

They also required that the podiums be further apart than normal so it wouldn't be apparent that Bush is 5 inches shorter than Kerry.
I guess they realize just how superficial people are in their judgements. Of course that would be obvious if they'd visit this place once a week.

I know Kerry has that problem, and personally, his style is one of the jaded schoolmaster, talking down to the people. I don't like it, but to make Kerry the next Mr. Potter of America and Bush out to be the Mr. Bailey of America isn't right.
To clarify, you said TWO things that got my attention:
It hasn't just gotten old for those special liberals everyone loves to rail on, you know. As a moderate, he turns me off completely. While Kerry seems to be arrogant and Kennedy-esque, Bush seems to be everything I abhor about people who simplify everything to the point where intelligence goes out the window just to act; it's scripted sound bites and canned laughs!!
Bush is merely playing a different game than Kerry! Kerry's act is high-minded and arrogant, while Bush's act is carefully scripted and ridiculous when studied.
It's like saying Michael Moore is a better representation for humanity that Rush Limbaugh because he doesn't abuse drugs and he has scruples because he refused awards. Different acts, same crappy game... and we have another 4 years of mediocrity and danger.
Kerry's "act" as you call it, perhaps sadly for him, may not be an act. If you look at the old films of him testifying, being interviewed and debating, the style is the same. So perhaps he's just being himself, and perhaps Bush is just being himself.

One of the things they pound into you in campaign training is to get the message, stay on the message, and keep on message. So it's not surprising. I saw Howard Dean in person once and his speech was a rerun as well. I'm sure it's the same on the other side.
With 24x7 news and the internet, speeches that might normally seem new or fresh aren't any more. However to many people they probably are.
It would be nice if the campaigns could focus on something other than who got shot worse in Vietnam and the like ... I think things will heat up in the home stretch and there will be some fireworks, and variety.

That's right, call names when you get caught with your butt swinging in the breeze. I take back nothing - looking back over history one can see some pretty uninspiring characters, seemingly, accomplishing great things. It was fortunate that they weren't summarily dismissed because they failed to arouse the masses with their speaking style. As if it's their job to be amusing and inspiring. Look inside for that, not to someone else, you pathetic little people.
If it has wings, webbed feet and flies it's a duck. I don't give a rat's ass who you voted for in 2000, you can't hide behind that. I've seen numbers of your posts and you're not particularly liberal. And I never mentioned ANY party - YOU are the one who's got the tunnel vision. I merely commented on the error one makes in judgement on superficialities.
Here on PPP superficialities rule though. My momma always told me that petty people are obsessed with superficial things and as usual she was right.
And in terms of judging Bush by his speaking style - that's really one of the few things he has going for him, or had. His "just plain folks" style played well in the early days but has gotten old. Real old. A little presidential formality is sometimes callered for. But while his tendency to lounge on the podium and say stupid things is annoying, it's his damaging policies and arrogance administrative actions that are far more irritating.

You think $900/month ($10,800/year) is a fair price for a health insurance policy. You are unaware that health insurance premiums have increased 60% since Bush took office. You haven't heard that by the time you retire your employer will NOT be offering retirement health benefits for you and your spouse.
You are already retired and don't believe that your former life long employer would have the cruelty or the legal power to simply drop you and all of its retirees from its health insurance policy. You think you are set for life.
You are against big Federal and State programs like Medicare and Medicaid and would rather pay the $60,000 a year on your own for a nursing home when one of your elderly parents or your spouse gets too sick to live at home. You don't believe it can happen to you.
You believe that it is more likely that a fanatical, religious, Muslim terrorist will attack your home and family rather than a nursing home will attack your entire life savings and confiscate the home of your parents---the home you grew up in.
You see terrorists killing people all the time on TV but you have never seen the TV show a single person who has died because they were one of the 50 million who can't afford health insurance----so it must not be a big deal, not having health insurance. All those 50 million uninsured Americans must be poor people who live far away from you and they are probably in perfect health anyway. You have your duct tape and gas mask and are ready for the attack. Anyway, Bush says we are safe----for now.
You are at work sitting in your cubicle and don't really believe that President Bush is referring to YOU when he says that the average American should expect to change jobs at least eight times in their lives---and to prepare to retrain for a different career at your local Community College. You think President Bush is talking about factory workers, not about you.
You are a factory worker and don't believe that your job can be outsourced to China or India because you have been working there for over ten years and your company would never do that to you because Bush visited your state and went to a factory and stood in front of a big banner that read "Jobs and Growth" and everyone cheered and applauded him. This is permitted so that Corporations have a continual, cheap source of labor to draw upon---millions of immigrants who will work 60 hours a week with no benefits of any kind at any job they can find. You don't believe or haven't heard that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan believes that the retirement age for Social Security benefits as well as eligibility for your company benefits will have to be raised to Age 70, because of Bush's anticipated huge trillion dollar deficits.
You believe drug companies should prevent you from buying American drugs from Canada at half price. You are against this type of free trade because Bush says it is unsafe and "no medication" is a better choice for you. President Bush has taken cocaine so he is an expert on the dangers of drugs. This is good. This is what we need in a President----first hand experience.

Your state has a budget deficit of $2 billion but we should spend $600 billion in Iraq during the next four years so Iraq doesn't have a budget deficit. You think its great that President Bush has personally approved the forgiveness of all Iraqi national debts and also think its great that our own American deficit has gone from a $500 billion surplus to a $500 billion deficit under President Bush. You think that taxes will just be coming down, down, down under Bush until no one ever has to pay any taxes ever again----and everything will be fine.
You know Iraq has more oil than any other country in the world, but no one knows where the oil ends up after it comes out of the ground or who got the money for it. You don't mind the thought of paying $3.00 a gallon, or $4.00 a gallon, as long as you don't have to get out of your car to pump it yourself.

You believe that 50 million people without health insurance isn't all that bad. You think that the solution is that they just better not get sick.
You think that your company enjoys paying most of your health premiums and they probably have never thought about eliminating your position.

Your favorite hobby is to load up the old machine gun with a clip of ammo that can spray 30 bullets a second and go hunting for squirrels and rabbits. You like to "blast away". You like Bush because HE will stick up for your Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms" including automatic assault weapons, machine guns, AK-47 fully automatic rifles, grenade launchers, bazookas, sticks of dynamite, hand grenades, explosives and any other weapon that is good for hunting squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, and deer.
You saw some of the speeches from the Republican National Convention. You were mesmerized by Zell Miller's patriotic frenzy and by Schwarrzeneger's call for Terminating the Terrorists. You got goose bumps from re-living the 9/11 experience through the words of Mayor Rudy and Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomhead. You got the shivers all over again. You stood in front of the TV waving your little American flag when glassy eyed, George W himself spoke to the crowd (even if he wasn't reading "My Pet Goat"). You truly believe that when you lose your job, your health benefits, and your house that you can just call up on the phone---Zell, Arnold, Rudy, Pataki, Bloomhead or George himself and they will use their connections to help you (a loyal Republican) out of your pickle.
You think President Bush and the Republican Party deserve contributions from the pharmaceutical and health insurance industry and you don't mind paying $200 for a bottle of prescription drugs even though the President has personally raised $200 million for his campaign war chest.
You like seeing constant TV commercials for powerful, potentially dangerous prescription drugs because if you didn't you wouldn't know you were so sick and your doctor wouldn't tell you about the drugs without you asking him. You are unaware that pharmaceutical companies actually spend more on TV commercial jingles and marketing campaigns than they do for meaningful, scientific research. We need to protect our multi-national corporations from the nit picking, whiney, dangerous, senior citizens that never cease complaining.
You like President Bush's tough talk and get a kick out of the expressions "we're gonna smoke 'em out and bring 'em ta justice"; "we're gonna get 'em dead or alive"; "bring 'em (the terrorists) on"; and "we're gonna get 'dem folks who knocked down da buildings", and you think this eloquent speaking, (prepared and reviewed by 100 Presidential speechwriters) enhances our stature in the world.
You like to see President Bush getting off the shiny green helicopter with his two dogs and he always smiles and waves and holds hands with his wife and that seems nice.
Your main source of information is the Nightly News where you hear 20 minutes of short sound bites from any one Presidential candidate speaking for 15 seconds on the $600 billion being spent on Iraq, intermingled with 15 commercials for pharmaceutical products that "speak" for 30 seconds each. You especially like the chemotherapy and rheumatoid arthritis commercials that show healthy people walking their dogs on beautiful green grass with beautiful sunsets with soothing music; and the commercials where people have been cured of their diarrehea and constipation and can get to work on time.
You voted for Bush's father when he won and you voted for Bush's father when he lost. And you voted for this current President Bush when he lost, but then you found out he won because of something in Florida. And it's easy to remember the name Bush, so you might as well vote for him again.

Today I had lunch with a woman I just met whose son is in Iraq. He was shot. The injury was just a flesh wound, they patched him up and sent him on his way. He was three feet from an artillery shell when it exploded, embedding shrapnel everywhere but his face (which he buried). His third injury was getting shot again. He's sort of a mess and deaf in one ear, but he's still there.
He does the door-to-door thing looking for insurgents, kicking in doors and getting shot at.
He dropped out of college on 9/12 to enlist and now wonders why.
War is hell. You want war, stop bitching about the casualties.

I can't believe how wrong you guys all are.
What's happening is clearly to the benefit of the Republican party, but that's the best part about it. They don't need to push this along. It'll take a life of it's own because CBS put a big fat ding in whatever credibility is left in the media.
Do you think the rest of the media is just going to let that go by without being challenged? They'd be dead in the water. They have to attack their competition, to make it look like they're doing a responsible job, as well as to steal the viewers away from CBS.
Oddly enough, I'd be willing to bet that CBS wins because anyone interested in this story will probably make an effort to watch Dan Rather on CBS to see what the hell he'll do next? Is he really biased? Those interested in the story will likely tune in to find out. Oh, look. More viewers. Higher ad fees. Get it while you can because when the story passes, CBS will be begging for viewers, and that will be the end of Dan Rather.
This isn't political. It just has a political topic involved. Outside of that, what you're watching SHOULD be a competitive bloodbath for CBS as a result of pissing all over an already suspect business: the media.
My husband told me he was watching an interview the other night of a Republican who said that he wouldn't be surprised to hear that the documents themselves came from the Bush campaign, because it's to the Bush campaign's benefit to keep the media and electorate focused AWAY from the record (maybe that's why all Bush's ads talk about his PLANS because he has no PAST to hang his 10-gallon on).
Anyway I wish I knew who it was, it sounds like something Mccain would say. I'm on the road and not watching TV but maybe someone else saw this. You're just such a broad, well-rounded and informed bunch ...

Well as the neocons say, it's war baby and war is hell.
That doesn't mitigate the sorrow I feel for the victim and family - but the fact is if we hadn't illegally invaded a sovereign nation, it wouldn't have happened. And we'd be in better shape to fight off the REAL threat of Iran and North Korea.
And as TL says, Shrub says things are going swimmingly. We have them RIGHT where we want them. Mission Accomplished. Bring em on.

The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades,
but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.
Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless
you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness, and
you need our prayers for your recovery.
You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John
Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they
have the right to adopt.
What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national
interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

My old boss was a commanding officer in that unit. He retired a few years ago. The thought of him in Iraq is ludicrous. They might as well start sending (police) patrol officers next - good people all but not trained or equipped for the task they're about to face.

Sorry about that. You sound ok but it's still a little nerve-wracking - been there, done that.
But new doors will open to you; take some time to figure out a good plan and then follow it.
You may want to pick up a copy of "Laid off and Loving It'. It's a collection of real-life stories which is sort of inspiring and may give you some ideas. It's paperback, not expensive.
