  1. Of course I biased but we should hire Frank Reich as our new WR coach. He's been both a QB and WR coach during his stay in Indy. With Jim Caldwell's job up-in-the air (much like a punt from Moorman) there is a chance he becomes available this year.

I think that Frank is a quality person and on top of that he seemed like the smartest player on the field in Buffalo. He just didn't have the tools like Kelly did and also many of his best years were spent on the bench up. But I think having him on the team would be good for morale and just a good decision in general!

  2. How much do you dislike BB and Tom Brady. Their defense will be a real liability IMO when they play a better offensive team. Let's hope Baltimore or whoever comes out of the NFC light up their defense. Much like the Bills defense, when you don't turn the ball over they are a fairly crappy defense

  3. Ralph Wilson even liked Mularkey, but the man just walked away from a HCing job to take a coordinators job

remember some kids were giving his kids a hard time is school or something

Mularkey did use the "school" excuse but he didn't leave only to take a coordinator's job. He knew that with his strongest ally Tom Donahoe on the street, and having little confidence (and rightfully so) in the Bills administration, he decided to walk. There are ONLY 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL and literally hundreds of candidates. Think about how bad it must have been for him to walk away as head coach.

Interesting theory about Marv not hiring Sherman because he thought he'd be successful, though I don't know if I'd buy it. I was more under the impression that Levy's connection to Jauron while he coached Chicago. Also wouldn't a successful Sherman command a higher salary than a desperate Dick Jauron? Most said Levy was somewhat of a figurehead and that the braintrust of Littman, Overdorff and Brandon were pulling the strings.

  4. Great observations. I hope the Stache agrees.

I don't know...Mularkey really never impressed me at the time, but I remember being extremely disappointed when Marv and his "brain trust" hired Dick Jauron when there were a lot of good coaching prospects out there. In hindsight, it probably would have been wise to give MM another year at HC. Unfortunately, I think he knew it was a situation that was impossible to succeed in, given the fact that (aside from Marv) there really was no REAL GM. He wasn't with the team when they drafted JP Losman as "QB of the Future," and I don't think he was ever sold on the idea of him as QB which is why Kelly Holcomb played so much that year.

  5. There's an interesting article from The Bleacher Report that suggests the possibility of Dave Wannstedt taking over Chan's job. Maybe a little far-fetched considering that the team's success will depend on each other, then again if Buffalo let's Stevie walk and Fitz plays like the QB on a 2-12 slide the second half of the season while Buffalo's defense improves, it's not out of the question:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1007552-dave-wannstedt-will-new-bills-dc-land-another-head-coaching-job-in-nfl

But he has had bright spots, including leading the Dolphins to back-to-back 11-5 seasons and Pittsburgh to a 10-3 record in 2009. He's also a strong defensive coach who would be a nice addition for a team in need of a defensive facelift.

In that sense, Wannstedt's best chance as head coach in the NFL now may actually be with the Bills.

If I was Gailey, I'd be looking over my shoulder.

  6. Polian Neglected the defense in Buffalo and did same with Colts. Sorry I want a GM that focuses on building a team and addressing weaknesses. The colts win because of Manning and their drafting and FA work of late has been suspect.

LOL he neglected defense but build a ridiculously DEEP team that went to 4 Super Bowls, and the men who worked under him helped to keep the team successful after he left. Unless Polian finds a way to get blackballed by 31 NFL teams, be will never work for Ralph Wilson again. Sadly, I can't blame the guy.

  7. The most interesting part of Buddy's interview is a brief line he said about everyone "getting excited" at the early success. He said "I knew were weren't quite as far along as everybody thought we are" admitted that he knows the roster isn't there yet and the success was as much good fortune as talent.

I still believe in Buddy and I think he and Chan know what they're doing and what they're building. Adding a few more pieces next year and there's a lot to build on.

As popular as it may be to say "fire everyone" or "blow it up". I think we're moving in the right direction.

OK...so losing 8 out of the last 9 games of the season and repeatedly getting outcoached by division opponents is "headed in the right direction?" Bottom line is: Chan has one year to get it right before he and Buddy get fired (or "retires" in Buddy's case). Then we're back to "rebuilding" LOL

  8. Ok, so you are just coming up with vague half-solutions and not providing any real answers besides "Fire someone!"

And now do you want a top-notch coach? Or a young up and comer?

You can bag on "continuity" all you want. At least it has a complete answer.

I didn't buy "continuity" in 2008 when they brought back Dick Jauron and I don't buy it now with Gailey. If you have a losing coach, all "continuity" leads to is more losses. The problem is that unfortunately there is a short list of coaches that want to work here in Buffalo, largely due to Ralph's decisions and the team's "culture of losing." It would be pure luck if we did find a good coach under these circumstances, but really what do we have to lose. We know what we can get out of Gailey.

  9. In 7 years: Williams, Mularky, Jauron, Gailey...

Establishing the Bills as a franchise that gives Head Coaches 24 MONTHS basically guarantees that NO top-notch replacement would ever come here. It means they are already on the hot seat the second they take the job.

Who do you suggest Nix hires as Head Coach? Which "top notch" guy is available?

I think the "top guy" he's referring to would be a big name coach and in order to bring them to Buffalo, you'd have to give them GM power as well. That means Buddy would have to resign or retire...don't think that will happen this year. 4 coaches in 8 years isn't too bad, considering a team like Denver had 3 coaches in 4 years. That won't keep coaches away. What will keep them away is the antics of Ralph and the front office over the past 12 years, as well as the questionable "desire to win."

  10. Guys I didn't read the article and have no idea what you are talking about. It might help if you post the link to the column:

    Here is an excerpt:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Today is "locker cleanout day" at One Bills Drive. Here's hoping that Stevie Johnson spends as much time clearing out his locker as he does dreaming up his touchdown celebrations.

Front office types should show up in the locker room with empty cardboard boxes, in case Johnson needs help gathering all his things. They could hand him a bag lunch and a bus ticket, in honor of former coach Gregg Williams, and form a reception line as he leaves the premises. Forever.

Regarding Jerry's thoughts I agree that this is a bit too harsh. Why not use the tag on Stevie and see if he can have a "distraction" free year in 2012? Yeah it will probably cost $2-4 M more this way but we have the cap space and it could save money in the end. Did you feel good with Fitzpatrick throwing passes to the trio of David Nelson, Derek Haggan, and Ruvell Martin? Me neither...Stevie is our best WR and we need to keep him

  11. prob that Fitz stunk and the injuries are not an acceptable excuse as to why

So you think he'll release the QB? Not likely. Whether we draft a 1st round QB or not, looks like we're stuck with Fitz on the roster for the next 3 years until the second out. I really think Buddy is setting George Edwards up to be the scapegoat here, but if he does fire Chan I will have a newfound respect for the guy because it shows that he's really trying to win a Super Bowl!

  12. The general idea behind Sullivan's article is laudable as any of us believe Stevie's antics and behavior significant hurt the BILLS yesterday. That being said, I don't support Stevie J coming back to Buffalo UNLESS it were under the Franchise Tag. Sullivan is against the idea and says why do it for $9.5 million for one year.....the answer to me is exactly the reason for the article. You give Stevie ONE YEAR at the money he wants, to see if his attitude, behavior, work ethic, and talent all prove to be worth it. In other words, he's had a great couple of seasons in many respects, but also had some serious lapses in judgment in others. By slapping The Tag on him for one year, he gets paid the way he wants, and the BILLS reserve judgment to see if another year under Chan's watchful eye improves his attitude and behavior on the field (assuming Chan and Co. are still here next year). If Stevie's on-filed antics continue, show him the door....at that point it would be three consecutive years and into his mid-20's, plenty of time to adjust his professional attitude to be one to reflect what a great teammate and good players does: play with heart and keep your head in the game....talent will only take you so far, mental acumen must be a factor at the professional level, and that requires a mature prespective. I abhor what Stevie did in light of what his previous behaviors were, but to shuffle him out of OBD at this point to me is pre-mature....paying him big on a long-term contract is equally premature, The Tag is the only good solution here....IMO

  13. Check out this article posted on the main site here at TBD:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-bills-wrapup

    Here is a quick excerpt:

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix would rather wait a week before providing a detailed assessment on what went wrong this season, and how he intends to fix it. When it comes to sharing a general thought, Nix says there was “no excuse” for the team’s seven-game skid.

So the question is what is your opinion on what "no excuses" means. Following this organization since the early 90's (hence my user name) in the old days Ralph Wilson would want someone's head for disappointing seasons -- i.e. DC Walt Corey in 1995, ST coach Ronnie Jones in 2000 (though Wade refused and quit), and Gregg Williams after the collapse of 2003. Over the past few years it's clear that Wilson and his minions have let things slide such as allowing Mike Mularkey to coach after the 5-11 season in 2005 (he saw the writing on the wall and resigned), and allowing Dick Jauron to remain HC despite a very very poor season in 2008 that saw another collapse. For these reasons, I don't feel that Buffalo will fire Chan Gailey, but I do get the impression that his 3 year contract won't be renewed if he goes 6-10 again.

This leads me to believe that George Edwards will finally be fired and rightfully so.

  14. Which begs the question, why does a team use a top 10 pick on a part time player, one who while talented, plays a position that isn't a difference maker. This pick, again of a player with talent, exemplifies the misguided team building philosophy by Nix. And it's a reason why, after 2 seasons, this team is 10-22. That's worse than Williams', Mularkey's, and Jauron's first 2 seasons.

    10-22...that's pathetic.

I do agree with the OP. We need to commit to running a 3-4 or 4-3 and then to find players that can prosper in that scheme. Defensively we need to get rid of George Edwards. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Edwards a 4-3 coach trying to run a 3-4 for the first time? Yeah he is terrible but it appears he was put in a situation he should have not been in.

Resign Stevie. Absolutely - we have the money. I also want Fred and Byrd under contract. Levitre? I guess.

I would like this offense to run the ball more and utilize it's two best offensive players - FJ and CJ

  15. As long as we are playing New England (always good), Miami (what a finish to the end of the season), and the Jets (who will be average at worst). we have to be a good team to prosper. The sad thing is the season's not over yet and we're saying "wait till next year." Ugh this is as depressing as looking at the broken down factories in Western, NY

  16. Ok the Bills are out of the playoffs for like the 12th straight year. They will probably not make the playoffs for around 15 years or so until the team is sold. So now that they are out, what NFL team will you cheer for to win the big one? My usual routine is to route for the AFC team, but to cheer on any team that's not New England or the Jets. With NYJ shooting itself in the foot, I am going to say I will cheer for Pittsburgh or Baltimore. I don't think Denver, Houston, or Cincy stands a chance to beat New England so I am pulling for the big two. Hopefully we'll get to see Lee Evans become involved in the offense. In the NFC, I really like Green Bay and New Orleans. I'd be good with either of these teams making it to the Super Bowl.

Go Steelers. Go Ravens. Go Anyone by New England!

  17. Caution: Going off topic here.

Yea, redundant threads just keep pushing these arguments, and you get the same basic responses over and over. A reason is nothing really ever improves in a BIG way on OBD

We have little reason for optimism in Buffalo Bills football, for taking home the big prize. That is a reality that most here would agree. Of course we can always say next year. Although after crashing and burning for another season, it seems as always it's the same reasons that gets us to irrelevancy.

That being poor Quarterback play (save the argument that his scrub receivers are injured),dubious at best coaching philosophies, and very few players that can dominate. I'm on board for giving everyone except Edwards another year. I really hope with some good off season moves Chan can come out in September 2012 with something other than a 5 wide spread offense, because that bird has been cooked. Rebuilding yet again with current ownership is futile. Good news is although very slowly, we are getting at least a few guys that can actually play in the NFL.

As for Fitz I am not a big fan, building an offense around him will not get us to the promised land. I'm guessing Fitz starts here for 2 more years at least. after a college career and 7 years in the NFL, he has peaked. His throwing accuracy is terrible, and while with the right people around him he can manage a game, he just cannot throw anything past short slants, screens, etc. with any solid accuracy. It's funny we run Edwards out of town for being the king of dump offs, yet rely on a very short passing game which is the spread offense, and of course a useless over paid wildcat Quarterback. In terms of wins losses almost no improvement. I haven't checked lately but Edwards and Fitz I believe are basically in a dead heat for wins/losses. BTW I am not a Edwards homer. Other than yes Fitz is a gamer, or maybe he hasn't yet had his bell rung hard enough yet, to lose his brass nutz. he has a very fast release, because he has to if he's going to survive with this team. Our O-line can give him no more than 2 seconds.Yet some want a barn burning receiver. Hows that going to work?

Older fans want the whole deal, a friggin team that can seriously compete for a Lombardi trophy, some fans won't be excited to see us make the playoffs and get creamed in some wild card game. But hey, it will sell tickets. With the current thinking on OBD, I don't see anything that would cause optimism for achieving a trophy. I suspect a LOT of people would be happy with a 10-6 and a wild card game. Then saying we can build on this, again Fit can not take us there. As for a top 5 dominant defense? yea, were 7-8 stud starters from that. Not going to happen, we don't even know what defense were running next year, and don't have the right personnel for any of them, again to be that dominant D. We should keep Johnson but personally he's a wanna be Diva. There is a segment of fans who love it. After all the NFL is really just entertainment.

So, for some they will creatively change the thread titles but the arguments will be the same.

So the same circular arguments will continue, especially after an out of touch owner says "be patient" Some have been patient for over a half a century now.I cannot even quote anything more than that because his little address last week was very depressing too fans that want to win and win big. The headline I believe was about Toronto, not a single thread on that. Because who cares anymore? His other comments have caused countless negative remarks and justifiably so. Diatribe over.

I agree 100% with you Best Player. I love how you laid everything out on the line. Going 10-6 - that is something you can build off of. 6-10 and saying well too many injuries killed us, is not something to build off. This team could go 0-16 and people would find excuses or bogus positives from a 0-16 year. There is such phony optimism in this forum that it's stench can often be repugnant. Thanks for being a breath of fresh air.
