from the daze of my misspent youth...Sundays...1970s football...men like Otto layed the foundation for this game...

1 PM games:  watching Joe Namath play in crappy Shea Stdium which looked like a high school field; bad Bills teams with OJ loose over and over....or you could watch the NFC games which in Buffalo featured the Wash Redskins and NYG  games before Dallas became "Americas Team"

4 PM:  teams like like the Chiefs, Chargers with that passing game, the thug Raiders playing close games over and over with George Blanda kicking game-winning field goals while playing QB at age 40+...games called by grizzled vets like Curt Gowdy and Charlie Jones and the smooth Dick Enbeg (remember Sport Challenge ?) and color analysts no one ever heard of before...

Then on to the Wonderful World of Disney amd Mutual of Omaha's Wlld Kingdo...then Sunday nite Sabre home games with Gil and the French Connection...over and over...year after year...

Can’t mention Curt Gowdy calling those games without also mentioning Al DeRogatis as his color man.

So they’re keeping the dirt underneath the stadium is what your saying. Got it

Still a helluva lot cheaper than building a similar new stadium from scratch. Then again, the costs of “renovations” for old stadiums has escalated so much over the years. By the time they’re finished with their latest renovation of Arrowhead, the Chiefs and taxpayers will have spent nearly $1.2b in renovations since 2007. It’s crazy.

I think one of the characteristics Buffalo really liked about Carter was his ability to anticipate the snap count.  He supposedly has a really quick first step.  That is more reminiscent of Kyle Williams from the same draft class as McCargo.

His get off is very reminiscent of KW.

There is a money back guarantee, but it’s limited to what you invested to be here.

Don’t get cute, we check receipts.  😋

I’m sure somebody checked with Elam before giving #24 to Bishop, right?

Elam had already switched to #5.

I think some teams play the game that way, but it hurts them in the long run. Agents aren't stupid. If you were an agent, how would you handle a team that benches players to keep them from achieving bonuses?

When it comes to any type of performance based bonus clauses, the teams may want to see them reached even more than the players because it serves to validate the signing among other things. And you’re right, teams would be setting a terrible precedent by purposely not allowing players to meet them.

Before the draft Beane said he didn’t have 28 players with a first rd grades and then traded down because of it.  Other have said that this draft class only has about 150 players with a draft-able grade.  I know from the NHL, most teams don’t have 224 players on their draft day lists. My guess is Beane only had 160-180 on his draft board with another 100 on his priority UDFA list.

I do wonder what goes into the making the list.  I imagine the following steps

    1. The scouts create a list of 350-400 eligible players and then grade each player from 1-400 based on the combine, film, college coaches info and live viewings.

    2. Edit the list based on medical or character issues.
    3. Beane and the higher ups edit the list again after the combine, interviews and the senior bowl.  I think Beane here upgrades kids on intelligence and leadership.  This draft was full of more veteran players who were leaders on their college teams and who excelled at the senior bowl.

    4. Beane meets with the coaches to discuss team needs and to get coaches feedback on how someone might or might not fit their system.  My guess is team needs often serves as a tiebreaker between similarly grades players.  This was clearly a needs based draft for the Bills, but I don’t see any real “reaches” because of it.  Some have mentioned Carter was a reach, but Kiper had him 93rd.
    5.  Beane then tiers the players by grade to help him decided when to move up and back.

I am surprised by how close Beane’s board was to Kiper’s Top 150

    Pick 33 Coleman; MK 33

    Pick 60 Bishop; MK 61

    Pick 95 Carter; MK 93

    Pick 128 Davis; MK 133

Pick 141 Van Pran; MK 120

What made Beane’s declaration of having less than 28 first round grades interesting to me was Schoen’s later declaration that he only had 11 first round grades on players in this draft. After the draft, both a GM and personnel director in the league told me that they had 18 and 15 first round grades, respectively. Knowing that now, there was no way Beane was gonna trade up or remain in the first round. For him, it was all about sticking to his board (and the thousands of man hours dedicated to constructing it) and maximizing value in this draft.

Regardless, we won’t know, definitively, how good this draft was for a couple years. Just like it’s always been.

I love this pick.....the dude is a bruiser, has a motor that doesn't quit and great vision.

He kind of reminds me of a cross between a Thurman Thomas and a Ladainian Tomlinson.

I know everyone is talking about the Coleman pick, but this is the guy i'm wanting to see the most in action.

Although he’s a tick slower, I get a Maurice Jones Drew vibe when watching him.

Goodell (booooooo) proposed Feb President day weekend for Super Bowl. 18 weeks.
yeah, that dome!!!???  So, 1970s last regular game was Dec 10th. All you boomers saying today is same? Nov Dec Jan Feb. this is not a fall sport anymore!!

Great point about how far into winter the schedule goes nowadays vs. the 70s when the season always ended before Christmas. If anything, the NFL should start the season earlier, but the broadcast networks won’t allow that as it would compete with the start of college football for ratings.

Idk how anyone can think this is a "make or break year" when everyone from the top down says this is a "year of transition".

It doesnt quite mesh with 'make or break' does it?

Only way i'd see Coach getting fired is if we start 0-10 with a 100% healthy Josh Allen. That decision, as well as making a run for the SB, are all delayed til next year.

    We're in transition :P

When fans insist that it’s a make or break year, it really has nothing to do with McBeane but rather their own projections because it’s really a make or break year for them.

Walking into FSU from Michigan St and basically being the guy instantly is impressive. Big time NIL get and tells coach make me the return man.  Not many players in the NIL, transfer portal world have that mindset.

He certainly doesn’t lack the confidence required for the job. But more importantly, he looks like a high effort, play to the whistle, pain in the butt to play against. Loved watching his run blocking in the Cover 1 video. He didn’t care if the play was to his side of the field or not as he was trucking guys far away from the play like he is adamant that the guy lined up across from him was not gonna make the tackle, period. He’s gonna piss off some DBs in the NFL because he doesn’t take a play off. Looking forward to it.
