    QB Index, Week 17: Previewing Offseason QB Market

     

    It's finally Teddy's time. Right? Saints coach Sean Payton may not want to give away his plans for playing time in the team's season finale just yet, but with the No. 1 seed in the NFC already locked up, Drew Brees is among those expecting Teddy Bridgewater to get significant snaps against the Pantherson Sunday. In fact, Brees was inactive in a similar scenario back in 2009.
     
    Bridgewater's comeback from the devastating knee injury he suffered in 2016 has included many notable benchmarks, but starting or getting significant regular-season snaps would be a big step forward. It could also serve as a springboard for Bridgewater to jump to the top of this offseason's crowded quarterback market.
     
    For once, the supply of potential veteran starters could exceed the demand. There aren't many teams desperate for a new starter, a subject I wrote about in early December. The Jaguars and Redskinsshould definitely be looking to make deals, but there are more teams like the Dolphins, Giants, Broncos and Buccaneers that could play a game of chicken with their current starters, waiting to see how the trade market develops before turning the page at the position.
     
    Bridgewater had high hopes heading into free agency this past offseason, but wound up signing for less guaranteed money than guys like Mike Glennon and Drew Stanton. That was a miscalculation by many teams. After Bridgewater's impressive preseason with the Jets, his value rose enough to inspire the Saints to send a third-round pick to the Jets just to get Bridgewater in the building as a backup. (The Saints also received a sixth-round pick in the deal.)
     
    Saints fans see Sunday as a recruiting effort. If Bridgewater can shine in Payton's system, perhaps he will be sold on remaining there as Brees' eventual successor. However, it's more likely that a prime performance inspires a team like the Jaguars or Dolphins to offer Bridgewater a real chance at a starting job and the money that comes with it. After three years off the field, that would be a difficult offer to refuse.
     
    With the season-ending QB Index rankings on tap for next week, I wanted to take an early look at what players could be available this offseason. I've ranked quarterbacks in two categories: Expected free agents and potential trade/cut candidates, with Bridgewater leading the way in the first category.

    Orchard Park, N.Y. -- The numbers don't tell the whole story when it comes to Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

     

    In his first season the Bills rank 31st in the NFL in total offense and 31st in pass offense. Star running back LeSean McCoy is having the worst year of his career (3.2 yards-per-carry) behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league.

     

    The circumstances are notable, though.

     

    Daboll lost the two most important cogs of his offensive line - Richie Incognito and Eric Wood - before training camp even started. He's had to prepare five different quarterbacks to play this season - Josh Allen, Derek Anderson, Matt Barkley, Nathan Peterman and AJ McCarron. And his best receiver is an undrafted free agent (Robert Foster) who needed to get cut halfway through the season before he started to figure things out.

     

    Despite the offense's struggles, Daboll's name has popped up as a potential head coaching candidate. He addressed those rumors on Thursday in his final media availability of the season. Plus he talked about Allen's development, Foster, the run game and more.

    These advanced "stats" are fun, but are too often used to advance some preconceived position.

     

    Here are some issues I have with these "stats"-

     

    • What happens with a miscommunication?  Say a situation where you have a new offensive system, and are trotting out an UDFA and a couple guys picked up mid-season who may not be on the same page with the QB?  What if they zig when Josh was expecting a zag?  Say Josh throws a beautiful back-shoulder throw and Zay just keeps running down the field?  An experienced QB, with experienced WR's, in an established system, is always going to appear more accurate.  
    • Completely accounting for pressure is impossible.  Yes, if a free rusher comes, and the QB quickly throws it away- that's easy.  But let's say you have an awful o-line that constantly gives up pressure (know any team like that?).  The QB knows this- his clock is sped up, he's not a comfortable in the pocket and his mechanics could break down.  How do you account for constant pressure on previous plays creating inaccuracy on play where there might not be any perceived pressure?
    • How do you define a "throwaway?"  There are many situations where everyone is basically covered, or the protection is breaking down, and the QB doesn't exactly throw it away- but will place it where only his guy has a chance to get it.  Where do you draw the line between inaccurate and a throwaway?

    Josh is probably never going to be a high completion % guy.  He is going to push the ball down the field (which he should because it's his elite weapon), and it's easier to be more accurate with a pitching wedge than with a driver.  When you start with a lower completion %, even when adjusted it is hard to make up ground on people that started with a higher completion %.  That is generally how statistical adjustments work.  I didn't look, but I would bet that the completion % leaders would be pretty similar to the adjusted completion % leaders.

     

    Like I figured, the ABB would try to explain this away with excuses.   The text I bolded isn't the way to win in the NFL as the QB needs to be able throw to the open guy and do so accurately to sustain drives that lead to points being scored.  You obviously want explosive plays, but the chains have to keep moving  in order to matriculate the ball down the field ( Thank You Hank Stram).

I doubt they take those completions from other QBs and account for the fact that the same pass in terms of catch radius would be incomplete to our receivers. 

     

    It’s like the Detroit game where they gave Stafford a far better QBR than Allen. Well guess what, Allen was the better QB and the Bills won. Stafford got lucky on a couple 50/50 balls against Tre White.

     

    I trust what I see over what I’m told.
