  1. He gets a lot of credit but IMO he is clearly the Bills best player. In addition, he is one of the top 3 4-3 DE in football (with Hardy & Quinn). I think that Mario is the best football player that the Bills have had since the glory years.

Well then, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

  2.

As one of those who's predicted Manuel's failure, I'll say this: I've been wrong before. Being wrong one additional time isn't likely to change how others see me. Nor would it change how I see myself.

But I'll also say this: in the past when I've been wrong, it's almost always been because things turned out worse than expected. Never or almost never because they turned out better than I thought they would.

I'm much more likely to be right about Manuel than I am to be wrong about him. But if I am wrong, I'll admit it like a man.

    That's only because you're a Bills' fan....

  3. I honestly can't fathom how the comments on this post favor Super so much and Kyle so little.

Kyle is the engine of our defense. He is usually the initiator gaining the momentum for out team.

Super while the poster-boy for what an NFL player should look like, was found standing around and reading the D for nearly entire games. While, it is true he was asked to read, he didn't react quick enough.

    The Good News...

The good news is that Jim Schwartz will not ask Super to do this (at least, not anywhere to the extent Pettine did).

Jim Schwartz has always said his defense is defensive line friendly and it is. On nearly all plays the four linemen will be responsible for only one gap. Their primary job by far is getting upfield towards the Ball. Hopefully the QB has it when they get there.

This is the main reason I think schwartz didn't take a year off (with pay). He knows our defensive linemen fit his D like a glove.

Mario as the giant pass rusher, against the strong side running game. Dareus whm I think prefers playing one gap and getting in the action and stats (alas, he will still be the guy doubled by far). Kyle who is one of the better one gappers of all time. And Race Car Jerry Hughes who is the rare quick-twitch, explosive pass rusher.

He's even got the legendary Kiko to play keith bullock's old role as playmaker extraordinaire. He's acquired not one, but two of the thumpers he needs in the middle to run his D. Keith Rivers role is unknown to me though, he could go from back-up and mainstay special-teamer to three-down starter and STer and everything in between. It'll be neat to see him this summer. If not him at OLB it could be a combo deal or perhaps nigel Bradham. I guess it could even be someone else there at OLB....the point is we have a ton of good looking options and if he is an unknown so be it. Because he beat out some real talent to win it.

The coolest thing is he may have the best and deepest secondary he ever coached.

Great things man, great things gunna happen.

  4. For those who have trouble Bearing their boss..... I've reread my SN football preview mag on da bears....

Sadly, their offense looks like it is going to be really scary again. Somehow da bears got a decent O-line last season. The O didn't add anybody or lose anybody and it doesn't look like anybody luckily over achieved last year and you expect the wheels to fall off or anything like that. To sum up, the O - line is competent but does not dominate...at the skill positions the starters can dominate....they did lose McCown however.

The writer sez the Bears clearly upgraded last year's crappy D but it sounds like one of the worst in the league this year. Their best defender sounds like it's either FA pick up Jared Allen at 32 years of age or CB Charles Tillman at 33 and coming back from a torn triceps. They have another probowler in CB Tim Jennings but that's all the mag sez about him. I never heard of him....look out, it's Tim.

How good can he be? Da bears did add Allen, Lamar Houston (run stopping DE) and Willie Young (pass rushing DE) but said goodbye to Julius Peppers and Henry Melton ( who was injured last year but went to the probowl before). So, I guess that a bit of an upgrade. They also drafted CB Kyle Fuller #1 and from what I've read about him they chose well. The writer gave the defense on the ave. a grade of C, which is a very low average.(the overall ave. for the Bills is B+ And Jay Skurski gave our LBs a C which I think is too low).

Special teams are interesting.... They made Rick Gosslin's ST top 10 last year but the long snapper, punter and the great devon hester walked in the offseason. Could Danny Crossman redeem himself and get the Bills a W in week one?

Big factors for the Bills as I see it are #1- the Bills learning how to play with confidence and learning how to win on the road. #2- Da Bears prolific and balanced O at home in the opener. #3- Stephon Gilmore - if had to name only one Bill that really needs to step up his game this year in order for the Bills to turn around 14 yrs. of losing it would be him. A gym rat, unbelievable combo of size, strength, athleticism and speed and he is a leader, gym rat and film junkie. We need him to hit his skill level. I can't think of a team to play that we'd need him more for.

I know the Bills are just an on paper team, but I really think, this time, we're really going to do it. We are going to make the playoffs.

This a very tough opening day for us though, especially when considering how we played on the road last year.

If Marrone can get the Bills to think they are going to win and we don't shoot ourselves in the foot, I like our chances.

Bears don't show Bills enough respect, Bills are chomping at the bit to show the whole world that the streak is over, Bills aggressively attack on all three phases all four quarters....

Perhaps aggressively attack is redundant? iDK?

    Bills - 35, da bears - 23.

    Go Bills!

  5. I totally understand the OP's point...

But Hackett's point would likely be that he envisions a Bills Offense as efficient as those Brady led NE Offenses...An Offense that, given an extra possession or two, will use them like a daggers against you...

That being said I'm hoping for some flexibility on the plan...Truth is though...slow or not...too many 3 and outs is going to lead to a bad season regardless...It's just a slower death if you slow it down... B-)

    Excellent comment.

I also think a thing no one has mentioned yet is that the Bills are incredibly young and new in this offense. Coaches, as a whole, want their guys to get their main offense down pat; to be natural in it, before moving on to secondary offenses....we also have to overcome by far our hardest obstacle, learning how to win. Let's get that offense believing they can score in bunches (to even convince the defense as well) before we make any other adjustments.

Let's see some real success burning and ripping this offense and WINNING GAMES consistently before considering moving onto the next.

    We have to Billieve!

  6.

You say Johnny is unproven so you take Thad over him.

Is Thad proven? Taking Thaddeus Lewis over Johnny F. Football is quite a statement

Yeah, The love for Thad in this town, I think is infounded, similarily, the hate for Tuel is also unfounded.

I actually like Tuel better as a prospect. Until, "the throw" vs. KC, i thought he moved the team better than any Bills QB last year.

Sure, it wasn't great, or maybe even good, but it didn't have to be, to be our best from last year.

I think he got the ball out to the right guy faster than the other two..... Tuel's arm still scares me, but I think he is a decent prospect; a good guy to have as your third-stringer especially because he too, enters his second season as a Bill in this offense.

I give EJ more of a bump entering his second year, because he works hard, sez all the right things, and has the skills needed to play at the ralph.

I do think we have a little more than just EJ though..... Thad did surprise me in the last game of the season, so even though I think he is over-rated in Buffalo, I think his game might surprise me again.

EJ's inaccuracies do raise my eye brow a little, but I also understand he is a raw piece of clay that has come a long way, but still has a long way to go before, the way they want him to play, becomes second nature.

Lastly, I am one of the few that was glad to see Tuel buffed-up coming to camp. Maybe his arm is a little stronger but surely, he will be less prone to injury and things of that nature.

I don't know who has the worst set of QBs; but I can tell you who has the best team to, "grow" a great NFL QB. That would be Buffalo...

    Go Bills!

  7. QB Manuel (hands down)

    RB Forever Freddy

WR Sammy (so good he doesn't have to play a down)

OT Cordy Glenn - seriously, after 2014.

    G pass

C Eric Wood (just the blonde curly locks alone put him here)

    DE Race-Car Jerry

    DT Kyle! Kyle! Kyle! (Geez)

OLB Kiko (the non-Kiko submitters are dead by now.)

    ILB Buffalo Spikes

    CB Buffalo Graham

    S - Williams

  8. We coudn't keep much continuity with receivers and QBs from training camp to preseason through the Real season. That was tough and showed.

CBs had injuries again from start to end although they finished out strong. Gilmore and McKelvin specifically .

    And Cj was dinged up.

Ithink last year did affect the team IE QBs obviously. You know that though.

On the good side The O line was the same guys the whole season i think !

I am sure the right side was dinged up but thats good after the last couple years of major players going down.

The D line did well too. Alonso was the benchmark though .

Why don't you just break our O-linemens legs with a bat?

  9. I was mad we didn't keep dehaven and delesaandro in the first place. After watching last year's mess on specials I am certainly not convinced the problem is gone.

If our special teams cost us games this year fans and reporters are going to be like sharks smelling blood and after Marrone and his buddu....

I sure hope out STs look way better than last year.....

  10. Last season, he had his only healthy outside CB fielding punts all year; to me, that was just nuts and I think he got away with a bad decision right there.

I think the gentleman who already stated that if we have trouble getting Watkins going on O, look for us to find other ways to get him the ball. I think he is correct. I think one of Watkins greatest talents is his vision along with his athleticism, it ought to be very hard to get a square hit on him....(knock on wood, no jinxes, no jinxes, no jinxes.)

Thurman Thomas was fantastic at evading solid shots....first hard tackle I ever saw him receive the tackler got a hold of his jersey and whipped him to the ground. He bounced of our lousy turf....evading hits is a underated talent....Thomas had a lot of carries and a long carreer because of it...

At least until Flutie threw him that suicide pass that the Thurmanator saw coming and extended skyward anyway and got annihilated.. .

Another proud moment in Buffalo Bills QB history....

    Go Bills!

  11. I didn't really forget him as much as didn't get around to him.... I think I follow the Bills too much in fact.

    - I almost didn't include Rivers either.... I think the other 6 are a notch above Brown and Rivers....

Both good adds at positions of need though. We needed another back for 3 years imho....Freddy and CJ are part-time (or should be) and injury prone. I 've been calling to replace Tashard Choice since we signed him. Get a back that can make a play like Bryce..... Young too, a prospect! I'm a little worried about our intangible risk taking, but as a prospect, how could he be better?

Thanks for the complement BTW, that was kind.

It's finally, really, I think, gunna be a good year for us. I am excited even for training camp etc. i think our biggest weakness is D-line depth (assuming Whaley and co. are correct about our QB e v a l.)

Last year, the one guy on D who couldn't get hurt was Gilmore (and, of course, he did) this year it has to be Jerry Hughes. I think He is the only guy on the team who can beat a starting NFL LOT with any type of consistency.... I hope we either develop a guy or get a vet pass rusher by sept. I wouldn't mind a giant DT either; a tough guy.

    Go Bills!

  12. Coaches? Really? Naw, I guess I can see that....l but I will go with a six-way tie..... Getting six or seven new starters as upgrades is as big of a change as I can think of after just one season on a team that has talent.

    Chris Williams at left guard.

    Kwan-Joe at right OT.

    Sammy at wide-out.

    Mike Williams at wide-out.

    On O...

    On D....

Spikes at MLB - this addition is huge.

Corey Graham - big nickel-back and first CB off the bench. He will play as much as he can stand when combined with special teams.

And Keith Rivers at SLB. I'm a little skeptikal about Rivers but half of that is a belief in Bradham going to a simpler defense and entering his third year. Still a great signing because he can take on blockers, play special teams and provide much needed depth.

And a tip of the hat to Anthony Dixon. Can't wait to see him play RB in a Bills uni and captain our special teams. Can't wait to see him come in on a third and one!

Ladies and Gentlemen, after you count last season's late season additions like Moeaki, the rest of the draft picks and the undrafteds.....Hopefully, Hairston's also a key add.

We are looking at about 25 -30% change for the better at the key roster players.....

Now that we have qualty depth at RB and more importantly,

Manuel is entering his second season (along with the 3 other QBs) and you have a playoff team and a team with some depth (which is the same thing kinda).

    Go Bills!

  13. I don't expect anyone soon, but would love to hear they got a defensive lineman. Way more than any other position, this is our thinnest area and a must have area.

I'd be happy with another DT that excels at two-gapping like K. Williams (and, you gotta love getting another Williams.) or better yet, in my humble opinion) another RDE pass-rusher. Right now, we probably have no one that could replace Jerry Hughes as a real threat to beat a LOT one-on-one. Again, pass-rushing is the #1 skill we'd want any RDE free-agent to posess. Pass-rushing is such a rare skill in the NFL....

  14. Hey, looks like you have a very reasonable roster. Here's my meager changes....

Off - Pears, On - JJ Unga.... Save money, switch to guard, Bills seemed high on him.

Off - Moeaki, On - Lee..... Love his blocking let's say Moeaki gets hurt and Gragg makes it.

Off - Brooks, On - DE Wynn.... Rotate those linemen, gotta have size, depth esp. if Dareus gets susp.

Off - moorman, On - Dombrowski.... Another year older....

Off - Hopkins, - On - Randall Johnson.... Special teams OLB.

I wanted to get rid of Summers mostly because I get a feeling the coaching staff doesn't like him, I looked up special teams to see how he did there because Ai don't remember but couldn't find the stats.....but if he does not excel on specials I think he is gone. Whether Rodriguez takes his spot (I remember that he was supposed to be good at specials) or Dixon takes his FB snaps IDK. My take, make certain whomever it is tattoos his man hard and play him a little or a lot depending on the foe. I think Summers is pretty good at that.unless you compare him to Sam Gash.

I wanted to get rid of Nigel because I get that same bad vibe from the coaches about him. But he fits this D way better than Pettine's with his athletisism and Schwartz makes decisions way easier for his backers. So he stays too.

Wanted to go with just 8 OL but we are too young here. I think there's a good chance henderson stubs his toe and is IRed. And then we go with a diff. OT unless he is ready....

I loved the Brooks pick in during the draft and the first 2 years, maybe he can become an important special teamer. IDK why he wasn't playing there last year at the end of the year....but he ceratainly needs a big camp.

Same for Graham as you have said.

Lastly, I like that tall WR who just switched to TE and it would be neat if he did it ala Mr. George Wilson.

I mean the guy caught everything last year. You can't say that about anybody else...

    Nice post.

  15. 50/50.

I can see fans backing him 100%, but fans that say he looked great as a rookie have questionable memories, etc.

I think he showed some glimmers, I really think that's about all you can say....aside from great intangibles.

Dorky movement skills (definitely related to jitters).

Inaccurate arm, wildly at times. (Probably nerves also).

Corkscrew passes. (He has got to stop this),

    Poor vision.

    Poor footwork.

I mean, look at his QBR or QB rating.
