  1. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000046193/article/fred-jackson-says-buffalo-bills-fine-as-playoff-sleeper

Love how Freddie echos what most of us want in a team...quiet optimism, humility, cohesiveness of the players, let their play on the field do the talking.

I, for one, would love to smack talk the Jests all day long...but when we win both games this season (Oops, that slipped out)Rex The Bully will go home with a fat lip.

  2. Rex: "When we had Brad Smith, and we were able to run the Wildcat, that helped us. We may not have run the Wildcat as effectively as Miami was doing, but we were close. (Now,) when you bring in a guy like Tim ... as much as I like Brad ... he wasn't able to give you the inside running game that Tim can -- and Tim can throw the ball a little better than Brad."

This prompted me to think about what it is that Brad Smith does better than anybody on our team. I know the guy is a great athlete and a versatile player, but I believe we have better options in EVERY down and distance.

As far as kickoff returns go, I would rather have Terrence, Leodis, TJ Graham or Gilmore do that job and I think they would do better than Brad all day long.

As far as WR goes, we have some guys like Aiken and Easley that I'd rather have make the team and see them develop and if Brad takes one of their spots we could lose a potential solid young WR.

As far as the Wildcat goes, we are the only NFL team with two RB's that averaged over 5 yards per carry last year, and my understanding of the wildcat is that it's only effective if the defense thinks you might throw out of it once in awhile, which we don't. So now it's simply a direct snap play to a runner.

If the game is on the line and you need two yards, I want the ball in Fred Jackson's hands.

I agree on all counts. I have never understood the "manlove" for Brad Smith...either by the Bills when they continually put him in on kickoff returns so he could touch his knee three yards into the endzone or the Jests for that matter - thinking they lost a huge weapon. Granted, he converted a few third downs last year, but a direct snap to Freddie or CJ would accomplish the same thing. I agree with your thoughts completely. I assume the only reason we used him as wildcat QB was a justification for taking him as a free agent and paying big bucks...need to take the luxury car out for a drive once in awhile.

  3. As well all know the Bills have to play against some very good TE's this year(NYJ, NE, SF and others). Though I have no stats to back it up it seems over the decades the Bills have been historically bad at stopping TE's - often making journeymen look like All-Pro's. Does anyone know how Wanny's defense has fared over the years against elite TE's. What do you all think the game plan will be against these guys? Barnett in coverage? Scott? Wilson? Other than Barnett on the underneath routes, I can't think of another LB that can stay with any of the good TE's.

This is the only way to stop Gronk and HairNanDez

Of course, if Gronk counters with "The Crane" - we're screwed.

I don't think most of us realize just how quick and fat DE Mark Anderson is. He is a holy terror all by himself when comes to getting to the QB.

After you watch the above video you'll see what a disruptive force he was for the Patriots last year.

With Mario Williams on the other side garnering double teams and most of the attention you can fully expect Anderson to be in one on one situations most of the time............and that means he's going to be getting to the QB an awful lot.

it's really going to be exciting to see Mario Williams, Dareus, K. Williams, and M. Anderson on the field all at the same time. Throw in S. Merriman and D. Edwards and you've got possibly the best D-line in the league. Right up there with the NYG D-line, which is really saying something.

That dude is "hellified" (M. Dareus, 2012)

  6. Fitzpatrick was tearing it up until after the Washington game in which he broke his ribs. That plus the injuries to key personnel leaves me with the impression that there's still hope he can still be our version of a little less accurate Drew Brees or Eli Manning type of QB. The classic late bloomer.

I was hoping the Bills could trade up for RGIII, but since that didn't happen I see no reason to want any other team's starting QB for the Bills. This includes older HOF guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning. They aren't Bills. I wouldn't want them as Bills. We tried that with Drew Bledsoe and you see now that he has no allegiance with this team. It's as if he has wiped it from his memory bank. I don't care that he feels that way, I'm just pointing it out as a real reason not to want another team's established QB.

The only QBs that I'd like over Fitz are Newton, Luck or RGIII. That's it. Since that isn't happening, I'm excited to watch Fitzpatrick try to prove that the first part of 2011 was no fluke and that he has what it takes to lead this team to a Superbowl win.

    Yep, ditto that.

  7. Locker room comaraderie means a lot to this team. At the start of last season (through week 6 or 7) I wouldn't trade him for any other QB - with injured ribs, certainly a trade would be inviting....but I'm sticking with Fitz for now...bringing Brady, Manning or another premiere QB could rock the boat. If Fitz is anything, he is a respected leader for these other youngsters and veterans alike.

  8. Here's what I don't get.

On espn just a moment ago Sal Pao was saying tue Jets are looking to move up. They also said the Jets have 7 picks in the first 3 rounds. They also said that Tannebaum has moved up in 3 straight recent drafts. 07' from 25 to 14 for Revis, 08' from 36 to 30 for Keller, and 09' from 17th to 5th for Dirty Sanchez. My question is this, I know there hasn't been moves in a few years but how the H&LL fo they have 7 picks in 3 rounds when they have clearly been shorthanded on picks the last few years? Did they trade someone for 2 2nds and 2 3rds that I don't know about?

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/story/_/id/7742806/2012-nfl-draft-complete-seven-round-order

No, that's backwards. Most of the Jets picks are in rounds 5-7. They only have 3 picks in round 1-4....which means they would definitely be giving up picks next year or trading players away to move up.

  9. Yeah, I think if you missed it the first time around but go back and actually read through the Mario Williams thread, you'll see the origins of just about every inside joke on this board for the next few years.

Those were some funny three days on this board...there are some comedians here at Two Bills Drive that makes it the best group online.

    Respectfully submitted,

"The Computer Geek at One Bills Drive Who Couldn't Get the Live Feed to Work at Press Conference"

  10. Aging players doesn't mean much to a team that has to win now. Because of Ryan's big mouth they don't have the luxury of building for the future.

    Agreed

So, basically, everything comes back to Rex's big mouth

Kinda like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon"

    For instance:

    If I said "Batman"

    1) Batman was in a movie with the Joker

    2) The Joker said "Why so serious"

    3) Stevie wrote "Why so serious" on his shirt

    4) Stevie tried to come up with new celebrations

    5) Rex opened his big mouth and said he needed Plaxico

    6) Stevie tried a new celebration that gave him a penalty all because of Rex's big mouth.

  11. They're a "running team" that doesn't have a quality back. They also want to reduce their reliance on Sanchez passing. Other than pass rusher theyre pretty much set. I could see them losing some picks to move up.

Losing some picks or losing "ALL" picks?? If they were to somehow make this move and trade all the way up, they just set their franchise back years (they still need some DE help, safety, O line is older, need quality reserves in the event of injury, etc). Also, as I said, the RB position has to be one of the hardest on the body and an ACL or MCL tear is only a huddle away. Imagine the uproar if they traded away their entire 2012 picks for a running back who could just as easily be in a walking boot at week 1 as be named AFC Offensive player of the week. Too much risk there. I'd be pissed as a Jets fan for them even considering this type of desperate move (as a Bills fan, though, I'm elated.)

  12. I was with you all the way to the end.

Luke Russert's Mom was the one who tweeted that "Mario Williams was leaving the hotel on day 2 and everyone went into a panic that we didn't get the deal done...the joke since then is that Luke Russert's Mom has been involved in every decision the Bills have made since she made this "valuable" observation.

  13. I guess there was alot of buzz late yesterday (according to Sal Palontonio (sp?) and others, that Rex Ryan and the JETS GM are extremely high on Trent Richardson and are looking to move from their current spot at 17 I think all the way up to 3 or 4. No one seems to think this is possible unless they mortgage all their picks this year (and even more) to make that big of a move....but I wouldn't put it past Rex to see the writing on the wall - that he is a big mouth braggert and needs to show some production.

I also see this as a move demonstrating that the Bills D Line poses a threat to the Jets as it relates to their ability to pass against us 2x a year. They know what they have in "Sanchise" (a head case) and they know we can stop (or have shown an ability to contain) Tebow. They are scambling for a quality RB and we have 2 very good ones in Freddie and Spiller.

Times like this I like to sit back and watch. As Doc pointed out a few days ago, rumors were swirling that Sanchez wanted a trade out, then the Tebow deal, Santonio being a flake, and the bickering locker room....kinda fun to watch the Jets self destruct (especially if they mortgage all their picks for a RB (who could just as easily tear his ACL at minicamp).

With the 10th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select "Luke Russert's Mom"

  14. To add to the fire, rumors have been swirling that Sanchez has asked to be traded. Should be an interesting season. ;)

I didn't hear that one Doc - any link? If that is true, it will be a very busy season for NYC Sports journalists.

I will say this - when you look at the production from Fred Ex last year before he broke his leg, the fact that we drafted him out of Coe College, his production on the field and off the field, his level headed press conferences and loyalty to the team....I'm happy we have Fred and feel pretty comfortable that Nix will get him something by way of a new contract. These are the types of players you want in your locker room (unlike the the Revis types).

  15. I don't think I agree with this. No one is talking about Hernandez as being a great blocker but "experts" expect a break out year for him as an H-back type receiver. I also do not recall Sharp as a great blocker.

People are not talking about TEs because there are no "traditional" great blocking and some catching TEs in this draft. But there are a number of Hernandez and Sharps out there beginning with Fleener who, I'm almost certain, will go in the first. Then there is Michael Egnew and Orson Charles. Kiper says this about Egnew; "an imposing frame (6'5", 249), athletic and extremely sure-handed. Egnew is a very good blocker down-field, but as an in-line blocker, he isn't quite as effective. He's not a traditional tight end. In time, he has the frame to carry 265 lbs. But his hands may be better than any TE in this draft. Kiper sees him as a late 2nd. or early 3rd. rd. pick.

Regarding Charles; Kiper says he is a consistent threat to stretch the deep middle area of the field. He has above average hands, runs very good routes, and finds open areas of the defense. Blocking at the pro level figures to be just so-so. Kiper thinks he might be a day three selection.

I'm with ya - but when you look at the Big Board (for whatever that's worth) there are a handful of QB's, D Linemen, linebackers, cornerbacks and WR's...nobody seems to be highlighting TE's until later, which leads to the conclusion that TE's aren't as big of a priority (or aren't getting the respect) as compared to the big name talents in pick 1-25.

  16. It certainly isn't a glamour pick (like Floyd or Kuechly)- by taking a corner Buddy would either be:

    a) Shoring up with a quality coverage CB with the hope that our turnover ratio skyrockets with alot of rushed passes (due to Mario and company), or

    b) Even though most of us agree when Buddy says something he means it, in this case, he may be trying to get other teams to think we are going CB, but for what alternative pick....I have no idea.

It really boils down to BPA I believe
