The 80s and 90s were the bread and butter of American Pop Culture in my opinion.

They were definitively solid, but so much of it comes down to age and perspective.  I'm partial to the 70's:  Shaft, The French Connection, The Sting, Jaws, Airport, Close Encounters, Star Wars (original), The Godfather I & II, The Exorcist, The Omen, Carrie, Dirty Harry, MASH, Network, Deliverance, Apocalypse Now, All The President's Men, Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Serpico...  Oh, the glory of it all!  That was a decade of great films.

For the 80's, throw Airplane, Raging Bull and Scarface onto the pile!

  2. The deeper you go, the higher you fly
The higher you fly, the deeper you go
    So come on come on
Come on its such a joy
Come on its such a joy
Come on let's make it easy
Come on let's make it easy

Take it easy, take it easy
Everybody's got something to hide except for me and
    My monkey

  3. Since you been gone, I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose

I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
    But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
    'Cause nothing compares
    Nothing compares to you

  4. "Kathy, I'm lost", I said, although I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why I'm
Counting the cars on the New Jersey turnpike
And they've all gone to look for America

  5. I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl
That's fine, I know them all pretty well
But I know sometimes I must get out in the light
Better leave her behind with the kids, they're alright
    The kids are alright

  6. Impossible Germany
    Unlikely Japan
    Wherever you go
    Wherever you land

I'll say what this means to me
    I'll do what I can
    Impossible Germany
    Unlikely Japan

    Fundamental problem
    All need to face
    This is important
But I know you're not listening
No, I know you're not listening

This was still new to me
    I wouldn't understand
    Impossible Germany
    Unlikely Japan

  7. No one I think is in my tree
I mean, it must be high or low
That is, you can't, you know, tune in but it's all right
That is, I think it's not too bad

    Let me take you down
'Cause I'm going to strawberry fields
    Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
    Strawberry fields forever

  8. I still don't know what I was looking for
And my time was running wild
    A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
    Turn and face the strange

  9. Let's hope you never leave, old friend
Like all good things, on you we depend
So stick around, 'cause we might miss you
When we grow tired of all this visual

You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour
    Radio (radio)

  10. What's your name? (What's your name?)
Who's your daddy? (Who's your daddy?)
(He rich) is he rich like me?
Has he taken (has he taken)
    Any time (any time)
(To show) to show you what you need to live?

    Tell it to me slowly
    Tell you what
    I really want to know
It's the time of the season for loving

  11. I'll give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my life for you
    So give a little bit
Give a little bit of your time to me
See the man with the lonely eyes
Take his hand, you'll be surprised

  12. Freedom is just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin', don't mean nothin' hon' if it ain't free, no-no
And feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

  13. Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he.
So he called for his pipe,
And he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.

    But the clock, tick-tock,
    On the mantlepiece -
And I want, and I feel, and I know, and I touch,
    Her warmth...

  14. Oh won't you stay
    Just a little bit longer
Please please please, say you will
    Say you will

    Oh won't you stay
    Just a little bit longer
    Oh please please please stay
    just a little bit long

    I bet promotors don't mind
    And the roadies don't mind
If we take a little time
And we leave this all behind
    Singing one more song

  15. How could you just leave me standing
Alone in a world so cold? (World so cold)
    Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
    When doves cry

  16. I told Althea
    I'm a roving sign
That I was born to be a bachelor
Althea told me, "OK. That's fine."
So now I'm out trying to catch her

Can't talk to you without talking to me
We're guilty of the same old thing
Talking a lot about less and less
And forgetting the love we bring
