Let me start by saying that I expect, like many other fans, that Buffalo is looking to jump into the top 5 to draft their future QB.  Aj Mccarron signing doesn't change any of that line of thinking.

That said, many media heads and some fans, have predicted Buffalo and Cleveland striking a deal for the 4th pick...i just don't see that happening, and here's why:

    1. Cleveland is already loaded with picks in this year's draft, and it's a quite possible they'd rather have our 1st round pick next year (instead of multiple 2nd or 3rd rounders from us this year)....i can't see Beane giving that up

    2. Browns know that beating Pittsburgh starts with slowing down their padding attack.  I see them taking a QB at #1, then drafting the best CB at #4

I'm predicting the Colts to be our trade partner....Darnold goes #1, Barkley to the Gmen at #2, and for us to take Josh Rosen at #3

Personally, I agree with the original premise, but for different reasons. In a draft where 5-6 QBs could go in the first round, and no agreement on who is the best, or what order, I honestly can't see the browns passing on Saquon #1, then taking the third QB in the draft at 4, if not higher. With good WRs  (finally), plus a bridge QB, AND Saquon taking the pressure off everyone else in the offense, its a MUCH better situation for them to be in than if they took a QB at 1, then if they had to hope Saquon fell to them at 4, or a lesser but still good player. If they did anything else, they're essentially committing themselves to further futility.

  2. With a halfway decent QB, Jordan Matthews can be at the very least really solid, if not really good.

E.J. Gaines was the forgotten man on the defense.  When we didn't have him, we were in trouble, and QBs threw in that direction.

I love Kyle Williams, but he's declined.  He would be more of a nostalgia signing than a good player signing.

Beyond that, everyone else is forgettable.  Anyone else we resigned should be a cheap, depth signing more than anything.  Anything more, and they're not worth it.

  3. Personally, I feel like Peterman's a much better fit for this offense than Tyrod is. Without the offensive strategy of the past few years that played to Tyrod strengths, i.e. deep throws, improvisation, I don't think Tyrod will ever be as good as he was the past two years. Especially considering the current strategy seems to play to all of Tyrod's weakness, i.e. quick decision making, throwing people open, medium throws, throwing over the middle, and rhythm passing. I honestly believe Peterman would do a better job as the starter.

That being said, I'd personally put Peterman as the starter regardless of Tyrod being healthy or not, and let Peterman develop, see what he can do.

  4. See, my problem is that people keep saying not to worry, Tyrod's been better in the past, the running game has been amazing in the past, etc., and it's going to be fine. Granted, the defense DOES look a lot better than anything Rex ever did. But Tyrod's strengths are the deep balls and improvisation. His weaknesses are rhythm passing, making quick decisions, and throwing over the middle and medium distances. What does the new offensive game plan require? Rhythm passing, quick decisions, throwing over the middle, and throwing short to medium distances. There's been very few deep balls up to this point. And improvisation isn't really worked into the game plan too much. So I feel like Tyrod's abilities were maximized in the previous offensive game plan, and he can only get worse from here on in, not better. That type of strategy DOES seem to play into Peterman's strengths, though. So I can't help but feel like Peterman would be the better option going forward.

Other problems I'm seeing is that although Zay Jones looks like a beast, he's still a rookie. Rookie WRs don't normally put up WR1 stats. And aside from him, who else do we have at WR? Jordan Mathews is pretty much it, and he hasn't played with the Bills at all, and won't until the regular season starts. Hard to see him making much of an impact. Clay's shown he can have an impact on games here in the preseason, but if Tyrod gets put back in as the starter, he's just going to underutilize Clay like he's always done. Finally, Shady is another year older. He's over the hill as far as RBs go. At this point in their career, RBs are starting to go into a decline. Who knows how much of one he'll have, and it probably won't be noticeable, but he probably won't be quite as good as he was last year. And don't forget that we really don't have a settled RB2 situation. No one's really stood out like Gillislee did. And who knows if the offensive strategy will put Shady in as many opportunities to succeed as the previous one did.

I'm seriously worried about the offense this year. I honestly believe Peterman is the better option at QB. I think the defense will get better, but the offense will take a big step in the wrong direction. Quinn up there asked what teams on our schedule we're afraid of, and called a bunch of our opponents soft, but does anyone doubt that those teams are saying the same thing about us?

  5. 20. Buffalo Bills

    Overall grade: C

    Pass blocking: D+

    Run blocking: A-

    Stability/consistency: D-

This was the most hit-miss blocking wall in the league last year. The Bills placed first in pocket time on vertical passes (2.9 seconds), but had the worst dropback hit rate (24.6 percent). They were tied for the worst screen pass blocking grade (F), yet had the fifth highest GBR (42.1 percent). This maddening inconsistency is why the Bills had a D-minus grade in stability/consistency despite returning four starters. Fantasy owners can probably rely on the run blocking for LeSean McCoy, but otherwise should consider this blocking wall untrustworthy.

Yeah, this is a pretty horrid summary. When Tyrod has all the time in the world and doesn't get rid of the ball, that's not the line's fault. When Tyrod's first option isn't open so he panics and runs out of a perfect pocket straight into a D-linemen that's there for containment, specifically because he does that, that also isn't the line's fault. If we had a pocket passer instead of a scrambler, the pass blocking grade would probably be better. Sometimes stats don't tell the whole story. This is a case where stats don't tell much of a story, period, and so this piece is kinda trash.

  6.

Ah, yeah, that is a good point. Perine did display some catching ability on tape, as I said, but I don't believe that was how OU used him, primarily. Mixon was more of the do-everything back, so you may be right in that Perine could be an indicator of a run-only play. He is strong enough, and has shown potential as a blocking back in pass-pro, and--despite the fact that we have Demarco and Tolbert--could be used as a FB or a one-cut option in two-back sets.

You are right in that it may take him a year to work his way in, but I see a 5th round RB--given that we also have J. Williams--as good draft spot to bring in someone who could win that RB2 / change-of-pace spot, provide depth if Shady is injured, and who could eventually be the full-time RB2, if J. Williams or a futre addition ends up stepping in for Shady when he retires. You don't take Perine to be the RB1, unless you want to be like NE last year, where they had a bruiser--Blount--who could cut a bit as RB1. We're just set up with a completely different style of RB1 because of the luxury of having a back as good as Shady.

Eh, "some catching ability" is something to work with, and he's got the body type to be a good pass blocker, if trained for it. Give him some coaching and I'm guessing he'd at the very least eventually be fine in the passing game. His run game ability is obviously very good. I'm sold. If he's there in the 5th, I'd be more than happy if he was the pick.

  7.

    Hap: Good questions!

-He did display good hands and a surprising catch radius on a few plays I saw. I'm also not as concerned with drafting him as a pass catching back. We have a known--and HOF caliber--quantity in Shady. Remember: I'm not advocating drafting him as Shady's replacement, but as his compliment.

-Good catch on the rushing record. In response, keep in mind that he was splitting time with Joe Mixon. OU had two excellent backs, and clearly Mixon got a lot of carries, too. If Perine was the featured back throughout his career, I would be more concerned about tread on the tires. I think he should be alright in that department.

-The other positive in running "behind" Mixon is that Perine hasn't gotten as much hype / limelight. This could lead to further de-valuation of him, as a prospect, which would help drop him to us in the 5th. All good things

You mention that you're not concerned with drafting a pass catching back, but I was thinking more of the problem that Mark Ingram down in NO had, at least early in his career. He was having trouble getting onto the field in the NFL because he was completely one dimensional, so other teams knew that when he was on the field, it was going to be a run play. Everything I saw in those highlights was him as a runner. Is that because he's not good in the passing game at all? If he's out there during a passing play, is he going to be able to be an asset in some way, whether it's as an additional blocker or as an outlet? Or will he be a liability on passing plays? Or not on the field at all for them?

Just like you said, I'm not worried about him replacing Shady in the passing game. But if Shady's hurt or needs a breather, would we be able to pass at all with Perine out there? That's what I was asking about.

  8. I didn't get all the way through, but he's got a really impressive highlight reel. For the people who might have more experience with him, can he catch or pass block at all? Or is he purely a one dimensional RB? Also, I saw he set the rushing record for his school. Is he overworked? How long can his body hold up running like that?

  9. As much as I hate to say it, I feel like our 1st round pick absolutely should NOT be Howard. TT can't throw over the middle. As long as he's the QB, we'd be wasting any elite talent at TE, because TT can't/won't throw there. Just look at Clay. He's an athletic TE who can block, run, get flexed out to WR, he's versatile, essentially everything you're saying about Howard, and is probably a top 5-10 TE, talent-wise, and his stats end up looking like a middling TE. Picking up a second one? Unless you consider this a rebuilding year, with a look to the future, and plan on drafting a QB high next year, Howard would be a waste.

  10. NFL.com has a way-to-early article listing the order and draft needs of teams based on record and strength of schedule (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000715300/article/2017-nfl-draft-order-and-needs-nos-1120). Not complaining or anything about the ranking (15), but the supposed draft needs are idiotic. They list RT (sure, an upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea), but then also DE and DB. Here's their take:

Analysis: The Bills will likely be looking for a bookend right tackle after the season. Finding a defensive lineman who can win at the point of attack as well as rush the passer should be a priority. The Bills need more talent at cornerback and safety.

We definitely need a DE and to draft one in the first round after DRAFTING ONE IN THE FIRST ROUND THE YEAR BEFORE. Not to mention Lorax (Lorenzo Alexander) has been playing well for us, and Jerry Hughes has been lights out. And DB? With Gilmore, Darby, Robey-Coleman, and even Seymour waiting in the wings? Not really...

I can somewhat see an upgrade at safety opposite A. Williams, but in the first round? Unless there's someone special there, I just don't see it happening. And nothing about upgrading the depth at WR behind Sammy? Maybe finding an upgrade at RG? The defense doesn't really seem to be a problem right now.

All in all, this just seems like an article written by someone who knows absolutely nothing about the Bills.
