  1. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!

People say this like it's an inviolable oath. It's also not true. Offenses have been winning the playoffs and Super Bowls in recent years. In the Giants/Patriots Super Bowl last year, the Giants had the better defense. They were 22nd in the league. The Pats were 30th. Meanwhile, the Pats were 3rd in offense, the Giants 9th. Going back to '91, the Super Bowl winning team had a better offensive rank than defensive 15 times, while defensive rank was better only 6 times (in '96, Denver was first in the league in both O and D). The other team that got to the Super Bowl had a better offensive ranking than defensive 18 times, and better on defense only 3 times (again 1 tie. Philly was 8th on offense and defense in 2004). You can look it up for yourself: http://www.nfl.com/features/freakonomics/episode-15

In summary, defense DOES NOT win championships. Offenses do.

  2. Yeah screw the defense and go all offense. Let's not be like Baltimore ...... oh wait

"Oh wait" is right. Baltimore did NOT have a good defense this year. They were 16th in the league. What got them to the playoffs and won the Super Bowl for them was their OFFENSE. These aren't the Ravens of years past. The defense was worn down and beaten up. It's the offense and their explosiveness that got them by.

  3. Personally, I'm more a fan of getting a weapon for our new QB in the first round, like a WR, then taking a QB in the second. Build around the offense. I want to put my new QB in a position to succeed, not turn him into a bust with bad habits from being on his back all the time or not having any open targets. Throw a TE in there in the 3rd round if there's one worth it. Once I've taken care of my QB, then focus on the defense. With better coaching, and playcalling that ISN'T completely predictable, it will be better than last year as is. Add a few new LBs and it will improve by leaps and bounds

  4. For some reason, his footwork kinda reminds me of Peyton Mannings footwork, always moving, allowing him to plant and throw whenever he needs to. However, that doesn't mean I think he's going to be Manning. In fact, it makes him look kinda skittish in the pocket. And he needs to get rid of that jump throw he occasionally does.

Other than that, I saw a good delivery and armstrength, but not that great accuracy. Even open throws and completions weren't really right on the money.

  5. I feel like the best way to go would be to get one of the big name DCs even if they are likely to be gone after a year or two IF you can also bring in an up and comer to one of the position coaches spots for the sole purpose of learning from that DC and be ready to step in when he leaves and keep some continuity. If you can't do that, then you would be completely starting over again as soon the DC leaves, and I would prefer someone who will be around for a while

  6. Bills have attempted the 9th most runs in the NFL this year with 342, or 46.4% of their total offensive plays. Factor in Washington's total is inflated by Griffin's runs and Bills likely are 8th in actual RB rushes.

Buffalo also has run a fairly low 736 offensive plays, which means their percentage of plays that are runs might be higher than 8th as well...

The argument the Bills don't run as much as other teams is completely false...we run more than most of them...

The problem with this post is that I don't care how much we run the bowl with respect to the rest of the league. The problem is that we should be running AT LEAST as much as we pass the ball. That's what our offense is best at. It's not what every team is best at, so the fact that we're ranked 9th does not matter to me in the slightest.

  7. Everyone has been tearing apart the past few Bills performances, trying to figure out what's wrong, but surprisingly I haven't seen anyone mentioning the 2:00 drills in the past game and a half. Of all the parts of those two games that were pathetic, I felt they were the most.

In AZ, with almost 2 minutes left, we don't even try to move the ball, and instead just try to burn time. That fails epically as we only burn 15 seconds off the clock, giving it back to the Cards with about 1:30 left on the clock, and tried our hardest to lose the game. Only Carrington's tip and Byrds OT interception saved us.

Against the Titans, we had the ball in the lasts 2 minutes and seemed to keep to the same strategy. Only a 15 yard penalty tacked on after a catch seemed to give any impetus to the offense, letting them think they had a chance to score. Even then, it seemed like they played to make sure they got a field goal, and that they didn't even try for a touchdown.

In the 4th quarter, we got the ball back with over 1 minute and two time outs left. We try and dink and dunk it down the middle of the field on first and second down, burning time and timeouts while going a total of 8 yards. Incompletions on 3rd and 4th down and its game.

All in all, we have the worst 2 minute drill I have ever seen. It's beyond pathetic.

  8. If they're trying to predict who the RotY will be, any top 10 rookie list that doesn't include Andrew Luck isn't very believable, I feel like. Compare last year to this year, and just like Manning was the only reason the Colts were good, he's the reason that they're at the very least competitive. Plus, he has the whole 1st pick of the draft going for him, so he has name recognition from that alone. People probably wouldn't vote for people like Glenn, Kendricks, etc., simply because they don't know of them enough, let alone how well they've been playing.

If they're simply putting together their own RotY competition instead of the official one, then I could agree with it.

  9. Really, some people walk on a blown ACL? I didn't know that. I'd heard the opposite and that was really the reason it didn't sound likely to me.

Didn't Nelson walk around on the sidelines before being put on IR? I thought I remembered seeing him walking around and thinking "Okay, good probably not too serious if he's walking around on it." We all know how that turned out.

  10. There was a game in Pittsburgh (non BIlls) a few years ago where the field was in the worst shape I've ever seen. It was so soft and muddy and such that huge gashes were all over the field. There was one punt that sailed high into the air and when it landed it just plopped in a squishy area and didn't even it bounce or move it just landed and stuck. They said there was a high school game and then a college game and also constant raining the in the days leading up to the Steelers game.

I remember that game. Wasn't it an incredibly low scoring game due to the field (6-3 or something, Steelers over the Dolphins) on MNF?

Edit: It was a 3-0 win of the Steelers over the Dolphins. Here's a video of the punt:

  11. I could only watch 3 minutes of that 12-13 min interview. My thoughts on it were this:

    1) While in the film studio, I would have sworn that I was looking at an interview from the 80s

    2) When it showed Maybin in practice, he really looked like a high schooler out there

  12. Once the season starts, don't they transitions so that the 1st team offense faces the 2nd team defense/scout team and vice versa? They can get better and get all the practice they can stand against one of the best defenses in the league (or at least that's what I'm hoping) all through training camp, but then they can boost their confidence against lesser competition once the season starts.
