  1. The Bills only have about $14M in cap space and will need about $6m to pay their 2017 draft picks. They only have 59 players on their current roster, which they will need to expand to 90 players.

They still have lots of improvements to make (i.e. backup QB, TE, WR, DT, DE, DT, LB, LB, CB, CB, CB, S).

The team has been signing bargin-basement FAs for a reason. I would not say that the Bills have plenty of cap space at this point.

I don't think there's any doubt that Glenn will play where he's asked to play. The team would not lower his salary if they were to move him to RT.

I think the new coaching staff would be open to this idea since they are starting from scratch.

  2. With the Bills strapped for cap space (i.e. they're having a tough time signing a vet FA RT) and with only six draft picks (R1,R2,R3,R5,R5,R6) it may be wise for this new coaching staff to seriously consider placing Kouandjio at LT and Glenn at RT rather than going with the more conventional Glenn at LT and Mills at RT.

Mills was a turnstile at RT last year, arguably the worst RT in the league. That needs to be improved upon.

I know that Glenn is being paid like a LT, and therein lies the rub for the Bills' front office. But the bottom line is that the Bills should be putting the best players on the field if they hope to win more games.

Because of Kouandjio's prior knee injury, he doesn't play RT very well. However, he does seem to play LT very well.

    Possible scenarios:

    Glenn - LT/Mills - RT

    Kouandjio - LT/Glenn - RT

    Glenn - LT/Ducasse - RT

    Glenn - LT/Groy - RT

There are a lot of possibilities but I think that the Kouandjio - LT/Glenn - RT experiment is at least worth exploring because it may prove to be the most successful.

    Your thoughts.

  3. It appears to me that Zach has looked around to see what else is out there and may have concluded that the Bills are the best fit.

If they can get him at a good rate it would be a huge add for the team.

Zach would be an every down player for us. We would have Z. Brown, P. Brown, Ragland, and Alexander at LB in the 4-3, which is a pretty good group.

Signing Zach would allow McD to utilize Alexander at both LB and DE.

  4. Hopefully the Bills are considering re-signing some of their own FAs....possibly on the cheap.

Guys like S C. Graham (who can also play CB) and LB Z. Brown (who was an MVP candidate last year) are under the radar type players who could really help to fortify this team.

  5. If the season were to start today, here would be our starting lineups:

    Offense

    QB: Taylor

    RB: McCoy

    FB: DiMarco

    TE: Clay

    O-Line: Glenn/Incognito/Wood/Miller/Mills

    WR: Watkins/Holmes

    Defense

    DE: Hughes/Lawson

    DT: Dareus/K. Williams

    LB: Ragland/P. Brown/Alexander

    CB: Darby/Seymour

    S: Hyde/Poyer

    Special Teams

    K: Hauschka

    P: Schmidt

    LS: Ferguson

    KR: Tate/C. Brown

    PR: Tate/Hyde

So where are the most glaring weaknesses that still need to be filled via free agency and the draft??

To me, it has to be CB. Currently, the Bills have Darby/Seymour/L.Johnson/Roberson/Gaines as the only CBs on the roster. That ain't good folks.

Beyond that, there are depth problems galore.

    OFFENSE

DiMarco basically can play the role of a second TE because he can block (and unlike Felton) can actually catch the ball. Adding a much better RT will likely be a priority. I think the Bills can get by with what they have at WR. Unfortunately, they have way too many other problems to address before spending big on a WR.

Offensive priorities: Adding a solid RT plus a high quality backup QB and a second TE w/ some versatility. They had interest in RT A. Smith and QB J. McNown.

    DEFENSE

Ideally, you'd like to have a thumper at SS. Hyde and Poyer are cover guys and not very big at 190 lbs. Thus, SS is a need that must be filled.

Bigger than that though is the need for quality CBs. Darby and Seymour are decent. L. Johnson (formerly from Carolina) is probably next in line. I'd say that at least two quality CBs are needed or this team is in big trouble. The Bills have already tried to get D. Shead.

Defensive needs: CB, CB, SS, LB depth, DE depth.

    Your thoughts??

  6. It's fairly evident that the Bills are NOT going to draft a WR in R1 after having signed Holmes, Brown, and Butler. Could they use one, sure, but the bottom line is that they have major needs on defense that must be filled as a higher priority.

They have major needs at CB and LB and even at S. They need more depth at DT as well.

I expect the Bills to trade down from #10 overall. There should be at least a few takers since they will a lot of very good players available at that spot, including a potential franchise QB.

With only six draft picks and a whole lot of needs I'm not sure that the Bills have much choice.

  7. The Bills aren't likely to make the playoffs this year and even if they do manage to sneak in they're not going to go very far.

That's why I say that they should plan to draft the very best player on the board at #10 overall.

Foster, Allen, Adams, and Hooker are the best players listed. I would not discount D. Watson just because we have TT.

The Bills are very weak at CB so Lattimore deserves some consideration.

There are so many holes right now that it really becomes a very difficult choice.

The safest play may be to trade down two spots to #12 overall with Cleveland and maybe pick up extra R2 and R4 picks.

  8. I don't agree.

They would not have resigned Taylor if they were going to tank it. Instead they would have released him, drafted a QB, and made the draft pick the starter.

What they are doing now is trying to do just the opposite.

They are being very meticulous about who they cut and who they restructure. Piece by piece they are rebuilding the team and actually improving it by adding solid, proven vet players at a reasonable cost. No superstars mind you, but certainly capable players.

    So far the Bills have:

    1. Re-signed QB Taylor - Best possible move given what is currently available (given the fact that signing Romo is a pipe dream).

    2. Signed FB DiMarco - Pro Bowl player, excellent blocker, good receiver, very good ST player. He will be like having a second or third TE. You need to have guys who can do the dirty work.

    3. Signed RB/FB M. Tolbert - At 250 lbs I suspect he will be the short yardage and goal line RB. He's pretty tough to stop in short yardage situations.

    4. Signed OG/OT Ducasse - He provides versatility for the O-line at OG and OT.

    5. Signed K Hauschka - Proven, vet kicker who is more reliable than Carpenter AND better on kickoffs as well.

Looking to add TE J. Cook, which would really add some versatility to the offense. Cook and Clay would be a nice pairing at TE.

Looking to keep DE/OLB A. Alexander, who had a Pro Bowl year last year.

Bills have lost Gilmore, Woods, Carpenter, Z. Brown, A. Williams. Gilmore is not worth $14M+ per year. Woods is not worth the big money either. Carpenter was terrible last year. Losing Z. Brown is a big loss, but the Bills will get LB R. Ragland back and seek to fill Brown's shoes with a low cost vet and/or via the draft. A. Williams, God love him, has become very fragile and it's time to move on from him.

So far, I think all of these moves and keeping guys like K. Williams seems to indicate that the Bills are trying to be as competitive as they can be, which is "anti-tank".

  9. This would be a very nice move by the Bills. Cook is one of the more versatile TEs in the league. Definitely a good receiver. We haven't had TWO very good, proven, veteran TEs on the roster at the same time in a long time.

Pairing Cook up with Clay would make the Bills much less predictable. I happen to think that the two TE offense is one of the more difficult sets to stop because the defense is forced to contend with TEs who block in the running game and also sneak out into the passing game. This is one of the reasons why the Patriots' offense is so effective. The Pats now have Gronk and D. Allen at TE BTW.

I don't think that it necessarily means that the Bills won't seek to draft a WR.

Since they have some real holes defense at LB, S, and CB I see them trying to trade down in R1 so that they can acquire extra picks in order to adequately fill those holes. That is unless they are infatuated with QB D. Watson and the Clemson star QB s available at #10 overall. In that case, they may feel the need to forego their plan to trade down and select Watson instead, who some think is the next Dak Prescott.

  10. The Bills only have 6 draft picks and will have a lot of holes to fill. If they can get Hoyer for a reasonable price they may not need to draft a QB this year.

They would have a very capable QB group with Taylor/Hoyer/C. Jones in the fold.

That may allow them to trade down in R1 to obtain more picks. They have a big hole at RT/CB/WR/LB/S/K/P. They could use another TE.

Like I said, lots of holes to fill.

  11. Would the Bills entertain the idea of trading Tyrod Taylor?? You bet they would and between 3-9-17 and 3-12-17 they certainly can.

I don't think the Bills would be looking to get rid of him or give him away, but certainly if they were blown away by an offer they would have to seriously consider it.

How much for TT?? I really don't think that a R1 pick this year and possibly a conditional pick next year is out of the question. Seriously, you ask??

It's because the vet QB market is very poor right now. TT is probably the best vet QB available and would come at a reasonable price for a starting NFL QB. There are at least four teams that are looking for a capable starting QB and they just may not be satisfied with starting a rookie. With that many teams potentially vying for TT it will likely drive up the compensation.

I think there's a good chance that TT will be traded given that above scenario, especially if McDermott prefers to start off his career as a new NFL HC with his hand-picked starting QB.

Having TWO R1 picks would sure be a nice way for a HC to build his team the way he sees fit.

    Your thoughts??

  12. I'll believe it when the final cuts are made. I'm sure McDermott wants Kyle to be around. He's still a very good player and one of the main leaders of the team, but his salary is $8.3M, which is a lil steep for a 34 yr old DT. If the team can lower his cap hit for 2017 he may stick around.

What's more telling to me is that keeping Kyle for 2017 indicates that the Bills are planning to retool not rebuild in 2017.

If they were to release Taylor and not be able to sign a capable starting QB, they would have to go with a rookie or very inexperienced starting QB and that's not likely to end well for them in the W-L column in 2017.

  13. For the Bills, it all comes down to QB.

Who will be Buffalo's QB in 2017?? Does anybody really know??

If the Bills keep Taylor or somehow acquire Romo they might still want to go QB at #10 overall (since they may not have such a good opportunity to obtain a franchise caliber QB). One way or another though the Bills will need to know who their QB will be by the time they select at #10 overall.

The Bills really like Trubisky, but he won't make it to #10 overall.

Watson?? Kizer?? Mahomes?? There's no way to know how high the Bills value these guys.

  14. The Bills have some difficult decisions to make.

    1. Taylor vs Romo vs R1 QB (Watson) or R2 QB (Mahomes) vs trade for vet QB (Rivers). Ideally the Bills retain a vet QB + a R1 or R2 QB + QB C. Jones.

Most likely it will be Taylor + QB Mahomes + QB C. Jones because:

    a. Bills could keep Taylor, but will need to restructure his current contract. He could certainly be a much better QB with a better OC/offensive scheme and better WRS.

    b. Romo won't likely come to Buffalo if given the choice and the Bills aren't likely to trade a high draft pick(s) for him.

    c. McDermott will want to go defense in R1 and then QB in R2. Mahomes would be a steal in R2. I would consider trading down from #10 overall to somewhere around #12 overall, gaining a R2 pick, and then using the first R2 pick to draft Mahomes.

    d. Getting Rivers via trade is likely a pipe dream.

    2. Dareus is just plain lazy and a pothead. Now that he has his big contract he doesn't seem motivated to play at his best anymore. I would look to move him and his big contract. There may be teams willing to trade multiple high draft picks for him. It would be worth a shot.

    3. Cut K. Williams ($8.5M). He's 34 and can't stay healthy. He doesn't do us much good only playing 6-7 games per year.

    4. Keep A. Williams if he proves to be healthy, but redo his $6.5M contract.

    5. Keep McCoy, but redo his contract.

    6. Re-sign Gilmore. He's an excellent cover CB when properly motivated. They are very hard to find. McDermott learned that the hard way in Carolina.

    7. Re-sign Z. Brown. He's a Pro Bowl player.

    8. Re-sign A. Alexander. Pro Bowl MVP. He can do so many things to help the team.

    9. Cut K Carpenter. His game has gone way down hill.

    10. Keep Ragland. No-brainer.

    11. Cut Felton (who can't run the ball or catch it) and his $2.3M salary. Pick up M. Reece (excellent receiver), who can also run and block and be cheaper. Like adding a pass catching TE.

Possible 2017 Draft strategy based upon this 2017 roster:

    QB: Taylor/Mahomes/Jones - Added Mahomes (R2).

RB: McCoy/Gillislee/J. Williams - Add 1 (FA vet).

    FB: M. Reece.

TE: Clay/O'Leary/Gragg/L. Thomas - Add 1 (FA vet).

    WR: Watkins/Goodwin/Hunter/Tate/Listenbee/D. Lewis/Powell/Easley - Add 2 (FA vet + R2).

    O-Line: Glenn/Incognito/Wood/Miller/Mills/Kouandjio/Groy/Henderson/P. Lewis.

    K: ??? - Add 1 (FA vet).

    P: Schmidt.

    LS: Sanborn.

    DE: Hughes/Alexander/Sh. Lawson/Enemkpali/L. McCray - Add 1 (FA vet).

    DT: C. Bryant/Douzable/Washington/Worthy - Add 3 (2 FA vets + R5).

    LB: Z. Brown/Ragland/P. Brown/Humber - Add 2 (FA vet + R6).

    CB: Gilmore/Darby/Robey-Coleman/Seymour/C. White - Add 2 (FA vet + R5).

    S: A. Williams/Graham/C. Anderson/Meeks/Ihedigbo/S. Brown - Add 2 (FA vet + R3).

    Possible 2017 Draft:

    R1 - DT

    R2 (added) - QB

    R2 - WR

    R3 - S

    R5 - CB

    R5 - DT

    R6 - LB

  15. This would be a no-brainer for the Bills. Romo would be the best QB that we have had since J. Kelly.

The problem is that Romo would most likely not be interested or would prefer other perceived "contenders" over the Bills.

The injury issue: Many of Romo's injuries have just been bad luck. I would not let that stop us from trying to acquire Romo.

With Romo at QB the Bills automatically become legitimate playoff contenders.

Romo is said to have 3-5 good playing years left. That could certainly make things interesting around here.

BTW, I do think the Bills will have to seriously consider keeping Taylor if they can't obtain Romo, but I don't see any way that they can manage to have both of them on the roster because of the salary cap. It would likely be Romo/2017 draft pick (possibly Mahomes)/C. Jones or Taylor/2017 draft pick/C. Jones at QB in 2017.

  16. It all depends upon what the Bills are able to do at QB.

Can Taylor be resigned for a reasonable amount (not $30M/yr) and play well under Dennison's system??

Can the Bills acquire a franchise QB like Trubisky or Mahomes in the draft??

Would the Bills consider trading for a vet QB like Romo (who will be available) or Ph. Rivers (who could become available)??

If they can't get a good QB this year then they might as well tank the season and build the team with high draft picks beginning next year.

  17. The Bills are said to be very high on Carolina's DC Sean McDermott. He and A. Lynn are likely running neck and neck to be Buffalo's new HC.

Mike McCoy, San Diego's latest HC to be fired, is now available and is said to be the best OC on the market.

It's believed that if McDermott were hired by Buffalo to be their HC that he would hire McCoy to be his OC. That by itself doesn't intrigue me very much, but what if McCoy could somehow sway QB Philip Rivers to come to Buffalo??

What are your thoughts on a McDermott, McCoy, McRivers combination??

Certainly McDermott wouldn't be everyone's first choice for HC, but given the candidates that the Bills are currently interviewing (i.e. none of them are high profile HCs and none have experience as an NFL HC) McDermott does seem to be the best of the bunch.

    Your thoughts??

  18. Crap article. Crap commentary.

Taylor is worth keeping at the right price. Obviously the Bills need to try to find somebody better than Taylor, but there's no guarantee that they will be able to do that in 2017. With Taylor, at least the Bills are competitive.

The Bills may be wise to sign Taylor for $5M-$7M and then hope that they can find a better, long term solution in the 2017 draft.

Manuel absolutely blows and should not be signed under any circumstances.

  19. Coughlin would be the best available HC on the market currently. The Bills would be fortunate to get him.

It's ironic that they may sign him now since they had the chance way back when Marone was hired.

Personally, I think the Bills should go get the best possible HC, not just who happens to be available.

Word is that Sean Payton is ready to leave New Orleans. The Bills should explore this option before pulling the trigger on Coughlin.

The great added benefit is that Payton would likely be able to sway Brees to come with him to Buffalo.
