  1. The Bills can really help fill one of their critical needs by acquiring McNabb. He's one of the best options talent-wise for them to acquire at QB.

    I would NOT give up a R1 or R2 for him though. I would give up a R3 in 2010 OR a R4 plus a conditional pick in 2011.

If we can get a QB like McNabb we will at least give ourselves a fighting chance for the next 3 years until we can develop a younger QB.

The Bills will need to use their R1 pick on a LT this year or it won't matter who they start at QB.

  2. As we move closer to the draft we'll know how good Bradford really is.

My guess is that Bradford will be selected well before the Bills select at #9 overall.

I'd love to see the Bills show some savvy for a change, trade their R1 pick down a few slots to pick up at least another R2 pick, and then select their starting LT to build their new "young gun" O-line around for the next decade.

A stud LT next to Levitre, Wood, and Incognito would give us a very young, but very talent O-line fo the long term.

  3. J. Green is an under the radar player. He's very good in the 3-4.

Banta-Cain is another experienced guy who could help. Another under the radar player.

I'd love to see us steal Green and Banta-Cain from the Pats (helps us/hurts them), but the biggest move of all would be to steal Wilfork from the Pats to be our mountain in the middle of the 3-4. Now THAT would really hurt the Pats.....and really help us.

Word is that Wilfork has already told the Pats that he would be very upset if they franchise-tagged him.

  4. The critical positions (QB, LT, NT) must be filled as the Bills approach the draft.

One approach would be to fill the QB position with a veteran QB since the top two QBs in the draft may not be available at #9, then draft a QB in the mid rounds of the draft to develop for the future. The Bills desperately need to fill the most important position on the O-line (i.e. the LT spot), which they won't likely be able to fill via FA. They might be able to sign a UFA RT, but not likely a UFA LT.

My approach would be as follows:

    1. Acquire QB McNabb via a R4 pick. The Eagles are looking to unload McNabb and go with the young, talented K. Kolb. McNabb will give the Bills a fighting chance right away until the Bills are able to find a QB for the long term.

    2. Trade down in R1 to the #12-#16 range to acquire an additional R2 pick. Let's face it, the Bills have many holes to fill and they need more high value picks to fill them adequately. Use the traded down R1 pick to draft a starting LT.

    3. Sign a UFA NT like V. Wolkork, C. Hampton or J. Ferguson prior to the draft. The Bills need a T. Washington type NT to build their new 3-4 defense around. Back when Washington stood in the middle of the D-line and Cottrell commanded the 3-4 the Bills were one of the top defenses in the league.

With those three critcal holes filled the Bills could then plan to take aim at selecting the best players available in the draft at their highest need positions.

From the scenario above, they would have the following remaining picks:

    R2, R2, R3, R5, R6, R6, R7, R7. (They start with extra picks in R6 and R7 and acquire an extra R2 pick, but trade a R4 pick for McNabb).

Depending upon what the new coaching staff is looking for there could be a number of existing players that may be traded or outright released. Those players might include: Traded category - QB Fitzpatrick (more trade value than Edwards), RB Lynch (bad apple), WR Reed (not worth his salary). Released category - WR T. Owens (high salary), DE Denney (high salary).

This may be a stretch, but obtaining more picks for Fitzpatrick (R5), Lynch (R2/R6), and Reed (R4) would give the Bills these picks to help improve their roster: R2,R2,R2,R3,R4,R5,R5,R6,R6,R7,R7,R7 (plus the R1 that they already would have used on the LT).

Then they could seek to build the team mostly through the draft while picking up a few veteran players as well.

    Possible 2010 starting lineup:

    QB: D. McNabb

    RB: F. Jackson

    TE: Nelson

WR: Evans, D. Mason, R2 (Hardy)

    LT: R1

    LG: Levitre

    OC Wood

    RG: Incognito

    RT: C. Clifton

    NT: Wilfork

    DT: Stroud, Seymour (Williams)

    OLB: Schobel, Kampman (Maybin)

    ILB: Mitchell, Dansby (Poz)

    CB: McKelvin, McGee

    S: Whitner, Byrd

    K/P: Lindell/Moorman.

  5. The Bills are not likely to go after any of the RFAs unless they can get a huge bargain since they will have to surrender a draft pick or picks for one.

There are plenty of very good UFAs out there to choose from, except at QB.

If you're looking to pick up FAs for 2010 you're going to have to look at mostly or even entirely at UFAs.

  6. After purusing the 2010 UFA market, here is a list of potential players that will be available to the Bills who could make an impact for us:

    QB - Not much there.

    RB - Faulk, C. Taylor, W. Parker.

TE - Watson, LJ Smith, Crumpler.

WR - Mason, Walter, Chambers, Osgood, Muhammad, Bryant, Burleson.

OT - Walker, Jones, Jansen, Salaam, Clifton, Tausher, Gandy.

OG - Neal, Hochstein, Hicks, Vincent.

NT - Wilfork, Hampton, Ferguson, A. Franklin.

DT/DE - Green, Douglas, D. Edwards, T. Johnson, Eason, Vanden Bosch, Seymour.

ILB - Brackett, Trotter, Dansby, Foote.

OLB - Bulluck, Vrabel, Kampman, Fujita, B. Berry, J. Taylor B. Chillar.

CB - Townsend, Harper, B. Williams, McAlister, Bly, Harris, Lucas.

    S- D. Sharper, R. Williams, T. Carter, R. Clark M. Brown.

  7. KzooMike,

I think you make some good points about Edwards. He could still prove to be a much better QB than he has shown (and he has shown us some good things) with a much improved O-line in front of him, better coaching, and a better overall scheme.

    Enter Chan Gailey.

I would still bring in a vet QB and /or a high draft pick at QB to challenge Edwards for the starting QB position, but if I were Gailey I would give Edwards a fair shot to be the Bills' starting QB under the new regime. I think Edwards has more upside with better coaching and a better scheme than does Fitzpatrick.

  8. The potential DC candidates appear to be:

    Bates

    Pendergast

    G. Cunningham.

The DC hire will be very critical for Gailey and the Bills because Gailey is likely to rely heavily on the DC to take care of business mostly on his own while he handles the offensive play calling and the overall team decisions on gameday. We must hire someone who can get the job done with the defense.

I'm hoping to see Gailey get an experienced, veteran NFL DC, not some college coach who has never been an NFL DC before.

Gailey is certainly taking his time on this hire. Could it be that he is wanting to go to primarily a 3-4 defense, but can't find someone who he is comfortable running that type of defense??

  9. We will be fine up the middle (i.e. LG/OC/RG) no matter what we do as long as we have Wood, Levitre, Hangartner, and Incognito. Butler and Simmons may also play into the mix.

Wood is a stud whether he plays OG or OC. Incognito is also a dominate player (and as mean/nasty as they come) at RG.

Levitre was our best OL last year according to the Bills (although i think Wood will prove to be the better player if he stays healthy) so we're in very good shape with those three guys. Hangartner will be a good backup OC and can also play OG.

Butler and Simmons could add more depth at OG.

Where we need to improve greatly is at LT and RT. Bell is a good backup, but we're better off if he's not starting at LT.

The LT is the most important position to fill. We need either a proven veteran (i.e. M. McNeil) or a R1 stud.

My dream (and realistic) scenario would be to sign McNeil to play LT and then trade down in R1 to obtain more picks (i.e. obtain a later R1 pick, an additional R2 pick, and possibly a R4 pick). Then use the R1 pick to fill the RT starting spot.

  10. Obtaining McNabb for possibly a R2 pick would be a very good move for the Bills at this point. We desperately need to fill the starting QB spot with a more capable player.

I'd like to see us get both McNabb and LT M. McNeil prior to the draft. That would take care of two dire needs. Then the Bills could concentrate on drafting the best players available at their next highest need positions. It would make sense at that point to trade down from #9 overall to obtain more high level picks.

  11. I think more time is needed to study the QBs that will be available in R1 and R2 before we think about trading our #9 overall pick.

We need to come away with a starting caliber LT and a starting caliber QB. At the very least, that should be the goal for next year. Quite a number of different scenarios could unfold, namely:

    1. Obtain LT M. McNeil (i.e. proven vet LT) and QB D. McNabb (i.e. proven vet QB) prior to the draft - Then who do we take in R1 (ILB McClain)?? We'd certainly have many more options. In this case, I'd be inclined to trade down in R1 and pick up more picks to fortify the roster. We could come away with FIVE potential new and improved starters (i.e. McNabb, McNeil, R1, R2, R2).

    2. Obtain LT McNeil only prior to the draft - Then we probably go with Bradford or Claussen. I'd prefer having the vet QB (i.e. McNabb) prior to the draft because then we'd at least have an improved starter at QB and wouldn't be forced to take Bradford or Claussen. It still remains to be seen what the Bills and other NFL pundits really think of Bradford and Claussen.

From what I've heard, Bradford is easily a top 5 pick with Claussen being more of a 7-12 overall pick. It would be nice to have one of them to train behind McNabb for a year or so.

    3. Obtain QB McNabb only prior to the draft - In this case we might want to still go with a QB (again Bradford or Claussen), but would probably be inclined to take a R1 LT. LT A. Davis is looking pretty good at #9 overall.

    4. Trade down from #9 overall to #12-#15 range and pick up at least an additional R2 pick. That scenario might only present itself if someone like Claussen or McClain is still available....and that is very possible.

The bottom line is that the Bills have a lot of holes to fill to be able to challenge for a playoff spot next year. They'd be off to a great start if they could fill the much needed QB and LT spots prior to the draft and then look to fill their needs at other starting positions with the best draft picks available.

  12. You would think that other QBs would try to emulate some of the things that Manning does (i.e. getting tot he LOS early, increasing the tempo, slowing the tempo. moving laterally in the pocket to create time).

Living here in Indy we sure do get a heavy dose of Manning. He is the main reason (besides Polian) that the Colts are where they are. He is just an amazing player. Arguably the best QB of all-time.

  13. I'd prefer a veteran LT like SD's M. McNeil. Nix could bring him in. The middle of the O-line is pretty solid. Wood, Incogmito, Levitre, Hangartner, Simmons, and Butler are all good players. What we need are BIG OTs who we can depend upon. We especially need a veteran LT who we can count on. Levitre is too small to play RT IMHO.

I'd like to see Nix go after McNeil to play LT and then a R1 or R2 pick to play RT. We would then have D. Bell to backup both OT positions. Butler and Levitre would both be additional backups. J. Scott may also play into the mix as a potential OT backup.

Our best starting O-line for next year IMHO:

    LT M. McNeil

LG Levitre (coaches considered him our best OL this past year)

OC Wood (Hangartner is good, but not as strong as Wood, who I think could become a Pro Bowl OC)

RG Incognito (an absolute steal from the Rams)

    RT R1 or R2 mauler.

    Key backups would be:

    Bell (LT and RT)

    Hangartner (backup OC)

    Butler (backup OG and RT)

    Simmons (backup OG)

    J. Scott (backup LT and RT).

If we can't get a stud QB at #9 overall then I think we should try to trade down in R1 and pick a second R1 pick, then use the two R1 picks to select a stud RT and QB (eventual starter).

  14. Chan needs to evaluate Edwards, Fitz, and Brohm himself based upon having a better prospective O-line next year. Then determine which of the three he will be cut.

My guess is that Chan will bring in a veteran QB (possibly McNabb) and draft a QB to groom for the next few years (in either R1 or R2) and then keep either Edwards or Fitz as an experienced backup.

He might trade Edwards or Fitz if he can get something for one or both of them since I think he would like to stockpile draft picks.

It would be really something to see Chan work some magic with either Edwards or Fitz. My opinion is that Edwards has a higher upside than Fitz. Edwards has lost confidence in himself, but the pourous O-line greatly contributed to that.

I haven't seen Brohm play at all to offer any comment on him.

  15. Actually, I think there's a good chance that our O-line will like more like this in 2010:

LT M. McNeil (FA stud LT that Nix will covet)

LG Levitre (thought to be our best OL this year, surprisingly durable)

OC Wood (very talented, tough, mean streak, natural OC)

RG Incognito (huge, tough, very mean, squatty, talented)

    RT R1 or R2 pick in 2010

    OR

    LT McNeil

    LG Wood

    OC Hangartner

    RG Incognito

    RT R1 or R2 in 2010

Chan will start the group that work best together. I expect him to emphasize improving the O-line for 2010 because he likes to run the ball and will want to give his starting QB a better than fair chane to succeed.

I think we will be solid up the middle since OG K. Simmons and OG/OT B. Butler will also be in the mix. The key to improving the O-line will be improving the LT and RT positions.
