  1. Ex-Panthers GM Marty Hurney, who was a mentor of newly named Bills GM Brandon Beane, was just as happy for the Bills organization as he was for Beane when he was made the 13th GM in team history.

“The Bills hit a home-run here,” said Hurney. “Brandon has a feel for every facet of the football side of things – from personnel to the salary cap to operations to everything. You name it he has been involved with it. He has a great feel. He is one of the hardest workers you will find. He is one of the most competitive guys you will find, but that’s what drives him. He is exceptional.”

Just a retort to the poster who thought the signing of Beane was embarrassing.

Beane has been with Carolina for 19 years. He's not inexperienced. Sure he's the guy that McD wanted because McD was brought up in the same environment and the same system that he was. They think alike as far as their football philosophy and how to build a successful NFL team.

Now it will be interesting to see if they can obtain the difference-makers that it will take to get this team to the playoffs and beyond.

  2. Look, just because anyone with a brain could see this coming doesn't mean that it was a bad move or even the wrong move.

The bottom line is that for an NFL organization to thrive you have to have a GM and HC who think alike and who will truly work together to build the team.

You could have the best GM in the world, but if he doesn't have the same vision as the HC and is constantly bringing in players that don't fit the schemes that the HC is trying to employ it's just not going to work.

Beane is very well qualified for this position. Carolina's Rivera and Hanley both mentioned on Bleacher Report that it was a very good move by the Bills and that they hated to lose Beane, who was with Carolina for 19 years working in just about every capacity, including as the Asst GM for Carolina.

Bill Polian, who not one to hand out compliments easily, praised the signing of McDermott and has now praised the signing of Beane as well.

I take that as a very good sign for the Bills.

  3. Current list of 2017 UDFAs:

    ) TE Jason Croom, Tennessee
    2) RB Jordan Johnson, Buffalo
    3) OL Voghens Larrieux, Coastal Carolina
    4) DL Marquavius Lewis, South Carolina
    5) OL Jac'Que Polite, Winston-Salem
    6) G/T Greg Pyke, Georgia
    7) P Austin Rehkow, Idaho
    8) WR Brandon Reilly, Nebraska
    9) LS Jeremy Salmon, Maine
    10) S BT Sanders, Nicholls State
    11) CB Marcus Sayles, West Georgia
    12) WR Daikiel Shorts, WVU
    13) S Jeremy Tyler, WVU
    14) TE Keith Towbridge, Louisville
    15) DT Nigel Williams, Virginia Tech
    16) OL Zach Voytek, New Haven.

From the above list I really like the following players to have a legit shot to make the final roster:

    1. TE J. Croom, who is a former WR. He might be a good #3 TE.

    2. P Austin Rehkow, who can punt 70 yds, kick 67 yds, and kickoff deep. He could be a really nice weapon.

    3. CB M. Sayles, who may thought would be a R5-R6 draft pick.

    4. S J. Tyler, who could make it for his ST prowess.

Gilchrist is actually a pretty good player. A very versatile player. Can play CB, S, special teams.

He is McD's type of player.

NYJ cut him because they just drafted S J. Adams and needed to get rid of Gilchrist's $6M salary.

I'd certainly give him a shot at safety.

The Bills have Hyde and Poyer at safety (Anderson to play ST) and that's about it. You know that McD is on the lookout for more players at S.

  5. Even with the additions from the draft as well as the UDFAs the Bills still need some help.

NFL vets that are available currently:

QB: Kaepernick, RGIII - Bills will probably pass on both. Kap brings bad press. RGIII appears to be washed up.

RB: L. Blount, De. Williams, Ch. Johnson. I'm shocked that Blount and Williams have not been picked up. The Bills could certainly use one of these guys. I'd love to see them pick up Blount who had 18 TDs last year.

WR: A. Boldin, V. Cruz, V. Jackson. Anyone of these guys would be a nice add. It becomes a necessity only because Watkins seems to be an injury waiting to happen. Boldin is getting gray in the beard, but he was quite productive last year and is tough to stop in the red zone. Cruz and Jackson are not the same players that they used to be.

TE: G. Barnidge. Dennison likes two TE sets. That means that acquiring someone like Barnidge should be a priority. McD has seen the benefits of having a pass catching TE like G. Olsen. Barnidge is in the same mold.

My picks: Blount or De. Williams + Boldin + Barnidge.

  6. Tyrod Taylor is a very talented NFL QB and he's still very young and in his prime. He's a top ten QB in this league right now.

In a better offensive system (i.e. the one that Dennison learned in Denver) who knows how good he can be??

I think the Bills owe it to themselves to find out this year what they truly have in Tyrod Taylor. I say give give a fair shot to show what he can do this year and let the cards fall where they may.

In the meantime, the Bills have hedged their bet by drafting C. Jones and N. Peterman. I see nothing wrong with that.

  7. At some point, the Bills are bound to get it right.

At the very least it is very encouraging to see someone with Polian's NFL acumen say the things that he has about McD. McD has a LOT to prove, no doubt about it.

He does seem to be on the right track. He's made a lot of very good moves. He's even convinced the Pegulas to go with him over Whaley.

Let's give him a fair chance to do things HIS way.

  8. This is a retort to the person who "can't see McD being a good Bills HC".

Bill Polian, who has been very reluctant to endorse anybody over the years for the Bills' HC position has clearly endorsed Sean McDermott. He believes that McD is basically a younger version of Marv Levy......and he thinks the world of the HOF Bills HC who he hired when he was the Bills GM way back when.

Polian says that McD is "cerebral, low key, and right on the money". He said that McD has a pretty good pedigree having learned under Andy Reid (Phily) and Rivera (Carolina).

    Here's the link: http://buffalowdown.com/2017/03/05/buffalo-bills-bill-polian-sean-mcdermott-marv-levy/.

That's a pretty hefty endorsement if you ask me.

From what I've seen thus far I would think you would have to be impressed with McD. He basically ran the 2017 draft and likely picked up three 2017 starters by trading up and down the board and may have found Buffalo's QB of the future in Nate Peterman. Even the ESPN analysts (Kiper & McShay) have raved about Buffalo's draft.

McD has also won the power battle with former Bills GM D. Whaley. With Whaley now gone it's likely that McD will be able to hand pick the next Bills GM. That's a very rare occurrence.

McD is likely to push for someone he knows and trusts very well.....and that may turn out to be the best way to rebuild this team.

  9. Signing Barnidge would be a no-brainer. BTW, he was with Carolina/McD back in 2012 so McD does have a connection with him. That may help lead him to sign with the Bills.

Barnidge has been a late bloomer, but has earned himself a Pro Bowl bid.

I think he was released just to save money once the Browns drafted TE Djoku. Barnidge had signed a three yr $12M contract with the Browns.

Dennison plans to run a lot of TWO TE sets. Thus, the Bills are in need of another quality TE.

Clay and Barnidge make for a very nice pair of TEs.

  10. McD convinced the Pegulas to let Whaley go so that he could dictate who the next GM of the Bills would be.

    It's as simple as that.

Now, do you think that McD is going to recommend bringing in someone who doesn't think like him and won't do what he wants??

  11. He's a solid vet CB.

The bottom line is that McD plays mostly zone coverage on defense. That's why you haven't seen him go out and get a shutdown man for man CB.

He needs CBs who can read the QB and make the tackle.

McD's system is completely different from what we saw from Rex Ryan's defense. We need to give it a chance.

  12. No doubt the Bills still need to fill some holes.

From the below mentioned group I'd love to see the Bills sign Boldin, Byrd, Barnidge, McCourty and Shields.

    Anquan Boldin

    Michael Floyd

    Jared Odrick

    Jairus Byrd

    Gary Barnidge

    Ryan Clady

    Josh Byrnes

    Gerald Hodges

    Jason McCourty

    Sam Shields.

There's still a need at OLB so Hodges might be helpful as well.

Corey Graham is still out there.

  13. McD is dealing with the hand that he was dealt. TT is the Bills' QB for this year. Let there be no doubt about that. The big money has been committed......at least for this year.

TT basically has THIS YEAR to show what kind of QB that he is. He may prove to be a franchise type player in Dennison's Denver system, which opens gapping holes for RBs, forcing defenses to adjust, and thereby, making things easier for the QB.

    He may not.

If he does prove to be a franchise type QB then the Bills can use their two R1 picks next year on other assets. If not, then at least they have the assets to obtain their franchise QB.

The fans always want to win NOW. But sometimes it takes a little longer to right the ship.

  14. Look, I think McD has come to the realization that the Bills are probably NOT going to win the SB this year. He is still seeking to make them competitive this year, however.

The macroscopic view though is to look to next year when the QB class is expected to be much better than this year. it is about getting their franchise QB NEXT YEAR.

With TWO FIRST ROUND picks the Bills will have a lot of leverage to do what they need to do.

  15. I think it was a team effort, but the connection between Andy Reid and McD is undeniable. There is a trust level there that certainly was a factor in allowing this trade to happen.

A lot of people on this board were putting together DREAM scenarios that included the Bills acquiring a 2018 R1 pick.................and Whaley/McD/others made it happen.

Next year's QB class is supposed to be much more talented than this year's group. If anything, give the Bills credit for being patient this year and making an excellent move to improve the overall talent of the team.
