  1. You need to understand the concept of projection. Projecting a run-first, throw-second QB with one starting season in the SEC, albeit with a national title, is not easy. Does he have a good arm? Yes. Does he makes some good throws? Yes? Can he scramble? Yes. Can he stand in and read a defense? No sure. Is he smart enough to handle to position at the NFL level? Not sure. Can he scramble out of trouble at will in the NFL when his first read isn't open and he doesn't have the patience to read his other options? No way, the linebackers are too fast. The bottomline is, you can't fall in love with a one-year wonder with questionable maturity and a very small sample of high level college games. How many other one year wonders were drafted to high and bombed? Too many to count I would offer.

I can't comment on Gabbert. I haven't seen him play but from what I've read, he's played in a pro-style offense (vs. Newton playing in the spread) and has done very well with it from both the mental and physical sides. And he has a larger sample of games played to judge on. The larger the sample, the closer you get to being able to project who he is. The smaller the sample, the more likely you are to over or under-estimate a player when their real abilities might be somewhere between the extremes.

I've said it before here and continue to.... I like Parcells criteria for drafting QBs (based on wins, games, played and graduation) as the starting point. Add in Wonderlic scores and you're in better position to make a good pick with a QB. There is a distinct traits with all SB winning QBs who I have been able to locate Wonderlic scores for, with the exception of one guy... none had scores, if I can recall correctly (have it written down somewhere), less than 22 or so, other than Bradshaw. Basically, every SB winner since 1990 has a score that higher or higher. And my point is, although you might get to the playoffs with some supreme physical talent, the stats seem to indicate that winning one requires some higher intelligence.

Proof: this year's SB QBs have a 35 (Rodgers) and a 25 (Roethlisberger).

Some recent winners, in addition to Roethlisberger, as well

    Brady 33

    P. Manning 28

    E. Manning 39

    Brees 28

However, Ryan Leaf had a 27, which is why I said that other factors matter, like Parcells criteria. Leaf bucked Parcells criteria becaus ehe didn't finish college or start and win enough games.

The problem with the QB in the NFL is that there is such a premium on the position that it leads to over-reaction and poor decision making on the parts of teams. So teams are willing to disregard what non-emotional, quantitative analysis says and gamble and it fails more often than not.

Between 2000 and 2010 29 QBs were taken in the NFL. We can call these guys unquestioned busts (1 in 3) through 2007(not enough playing time):

    McNown

    Carr

    Harrington

    Ramsey

    Boller

    Losman

    Smith

    Leinart

    Quinn

Some were serviceable but ultimately didn't/haven't win/won titles or are teetering on bust status

    Pennington

    Vick

    Palmer

    Leftwich

    Grossman

    Rivers

    Campbell

    Young

    Cutler

    Rodgers

And these are your title winners

    Roethlisberger

    E. Manning

If Rodgers wins, that's a SB-winning QB drafted in the first round in 3 of the last 11 drafts. If not, even worse, only 2.

So what this long winded post means is... it's a gamble. Big time. And you have to minimize the risk and not reach in the first round because as history has shown most QBs are drafted too highly.

Take the best lineman and move on!

Vic, Rogers, Rivers are more than serviceable.

  2. If anyone has looked at the broadcasts from Dallas for Super Bowl week should see the vision of what's going to come when it's played in NJ. They don't get this weather in Dallas / Ft Worth but one in a blue moon so it could not be anticipated. You should expect this weather in NJ at the Meadowlands.

What if the game was in NJ this year -- 18 inches of snow the week before the game will make a mess of Super Bowl week.

Who cares, the game will go on and the crowd will find away to have a good time.

  3. No thanks, I'll make this quick; We don't need any WRs or fullbacks and 3 ILBs is crazy when we need one and two outsides which you didn't draft and there are better options for the big guys you drafted. This might be a better option

    1. Robert Quinn OLB

    2. Marcus Cannon RT

    3. Phil Talor NT

    4. Chris White ILB

    4. Brooks Reed OLB

    5. Lee Smith TE

    6. Pernell McFee DE

    7. Josh Thomas CB

  4. My memory is being at college. After the game one guy from Rochester was running up and down the hallways of the dorm laughing/screaming because the Bills lost. He wasn't a Giants fan, he just hated the Bills. Thought about tripping him but didn't because that would be stooping down to his level.

Tripping would be in poor taste, but throwing him into a crucifix as he went by would have been much more appropriate.

  5. This year in particular I'm glad that the Bills coaching staff is involved in the Senior Bowl.

Good news is the Bills coaching staff gets to work with Von Miller and DeMarcus Love all this week and can only help better scout these players.

If Love falls to the second the Bills might get lucky.

All the players are obviously great college football players but of Particular interest is:

    81 Acho, Sam DL 6-1 3/4 / 257 Texas *

    57 Bailey, Allen DL 6-3 1/4 / 278 Miami

    85 Dial, Preston TE 6-2 1/8 / 238 Alabama

    66 Kirkpatrick, Jake OL 6-2 1/4 / 301 TCU

    65 Love, DeMarcus OL 6-4 5/8 / 318 Arkansas *

    40 Miller, Von LB 6-2 5/8 / 237 Texas A&M

    7 Ponder, Christian QB 6-2 1/8 / 222 Florida State

    79 Sherrod, Derek OL 6-5 5/8 / 312 Mississippi State *

    88 Stocker, Luke TE 6-4 7/8 / 255 Tennessee

    98 Taylor, Phil DL 6-3 1/2 / 337 Baylor *

    45 Williams, D.J. TE 6-1 7/8 / 236 Arkansas

They also get to line up against

    45 Beal, Jeremy DL 6-3 / 267 Oklahoma *

    68 Carimi, Gabe OL 6-7 / 327 Wisconsin

    21 Carmichael, Rashad DB 5-11 / 186 Virginia Tech *

    74 Castonzo, Anthony OL 6-7 / 308 Boston College

    40 Foster, Mason LB 6-2 / 242 Washington *

    20 Helu Jr., Roy RB 6-0 / 220 Nebraska

    44 Herzlich, Mark LB 6-4 / 244 Boston College

    53 Jones, Greg LB 6-1 / 240 Michigan State

    10 Kaepernick, Colin QB 6-6 / 225 Nevada

    84 Kendricks, Lance TE 6-4 / 241 Wisconsin

    91 Kerrigan, Ryan DL 6-4 / 263 Purdue

    48 Marecic, Owen RB 6-1 / 244 Stanford

    55 Matthews, Casey LB 6-2 / 235 Oregon

    70 Moffitt, John OL 6-5 / 323 Wisconsin *

    54 Paea, Stephen DL 6-1 / 311 Oregon State

    71 Pinkston, Jason OL 6-4 / 305 Pittsburgh

    78 Solder, Nate OL 6-9 / 315 Colorado

    12 Stanzi, Ricky QB 6-4 / 230 Iowa

I hope Nix and company get to give these kids some extra interviews or atleast prep their coaching staff and what to look for when and give feed back to the coaching staff.

The Bills have no excuse for a poor 2011 draft class they get to be up close and personal with some of the best prospects in the 2011 draft.

In particular Von Miller looks too small to me to play OLB in the NFL, the good news is our coaching staff gets to see him first hand and give their feedback.

    *indicates WSS endorsed player

They had better draft better this year but love horrible he got owned all week in practice and was getting run over and around in this game. where There several times where he was holding and even had a face mask against Kerrigan, apparently the refs where letting it all go. Also in all the games I watched this year he didn't look good either so I hope we don't pick him.

  6. Were you guys watching the same game i was watching? Kaepernick was BAD. His delivery was slow, rushed his throws, missed his reads. He's a project QB who isn't even guaranteed to be good. The only QBs i saw that did decent was Ponder and McElroy. I recall a redzone play where he bootlegged to his right. The first option was to a WR on the bottom of the screen. A simple hook pattern, but of course he missed the read and just threw it out of bounds.

    No thanks

did you watch the practices? He was way better than the rest. Also in this game he was the first north QB to lead a scoring drive and if idiot Lewis had left him in their longer he would have been more productive. The south was way better than the north which is why Ponder looked good and Kaerpernick was running for his life and was still able to make a few plays. Ponder and McElroy are average guys but Kaepernick has been very productive, can make all the throws, rocket arm and can run. Will he great in the NFL? You never know but with the right coaching (Gailley) he will and is well worth a second round pick.

  7. I know that I could not do the job.

I do want to clarify that I appreciate Ralph Wilson for bringing the Bills to Buffalo and for keeping him there. I appreciate his loyalty and his committment. I think he tries to do the right things and is a throwback to better days in business. I refrain from the sour jokes about him and his age.

However, he is the owner and he once again has the title of President. He is responsible for the disfunction of the past decade and he admits that. The organization has been meandering without clear direction for a very long time. Ralph did not have the energy to do a thorough job search for a new GM. During the GM search he not have top notch football people advising him on today's talent, He has Brandon and Overdorf. That opened the door for Buddy Nix, someone he knows and trusts. Buddy brought in Whaley, a young gun that may be the answer for us down the road.

    We shall see.

Like your honesty but if you run your business the way you do you could do it. Anyway hope your right about Nix and Whaley.

  8. From an ESPN insider article....

"They do this with a personnel blueprint nearly every franchise has tried to duplicate: by getting as many as 10 pairs of eyes on every draft prospect, they are able to pick exceptionally well, with few big mistakes, and restock their roster each fall with young, talented and cost-efficient players who perfectly fit their schemes."

Obviously we have a scout department, not one person stands up and says, hey this maybin kid has a 30" waist or can we afford a reggie bush type player (spiller)on this roster, etc. Or, we do have guys objecting and RW and TM just over ride everyone?

Who knows? but they have had too many misses and if they don't get it together we will never be good again.

  9. High Motor gals, that awesome :worthy::lol::D Honestly the Jills aren't that hot but there is no draft for them so the better start hittin the free agent market.

Also San Diego, Minnesota, Jets and ST Louis should have been on the list.

Nope. It's the Top 10 based on money brought in, not looks.

Money? who cares about money, cheerleaders are there for one reason and that is so we can gawk at them.

  10. Shows how dumb M Lewis to start Locker, He sucked and during practice. Kaepernick is the only who showed any thing out there for the North and that was under a lot pressure. Kid has got skills and Chan could mold him into a star. Ponder was nice but we already have Fitz.

Von Miller, Ryan Kerrigan, Brooks Reed, Colin McCarthy, Leonard Hankerson, Phil Taylor looked good.

  11. Hate it. DeMarcus Love sucks. I am sick of drafting CB busts. Cutting Parrish makes zero sense. Signing Harris is a pipe dream and not so "realistic". We our 32nd against the run and did little do improve front 7. I do admit though it is a good plan if you want to secure first pick next year for Andrew Luck

All this plus where are the linbackers in the draft? Kelsey?, even the Bills know he can't play LB and is why they put him back on the line.

  12. That's a fun one! You have one more RD4 pick to make if you want, so make Quinn-Sturdivant-Austin-Carter your first 4 picks (we have Carter going at #77 because he's a 4-3 OLB and drops 80 picks if he's used as a SILB, he's too lightweight for a RD1-2 pick) and take WR Greg Little a little early at RD#4B. Take Deunta Williams SS at RD#5, Burney CB at RD#6, and Houston as our bruiser RB in RD#7.

Hey Astro, do one with Alabama, that would be fun too.

p.s. I new we have extra fourth but didn't like TJ Yates and didn't see Greg Little.

  13. Defense, especially run defense, right now seems to be a major weakness. To me, last years draft messed up the start to the fix. With the switch to 3-4 NT should be a prominent position, and the Troup pick was not my idea of the big guy in the middle to do that. If Merriman is healthy and returns to form that is awesome. While LB is still a concern, the line worries me more. Stroud should be traded or released. Williams or Troup are not the answer. Buffalo has to go DE with their 1st pick. Farley at 6-5 300 is not the answer at NT. That should be a 6-3 to 6-5 guy around 340 or so. Unless FA gives the Bills a gem at NT I think we are screwed again in run defense. From what I have seen, unless some one points one out, this draft class is weak in big 3-4 NT's that can be had early, by early I mean 1st - 3rd round. I am sure of 2 things not needed in this draft, WR or CB. I would do this much though, if Cam Newton is still around at the end of the 1st and a team needing a QB is coming up, I trade my 2nd and 4th and move up.

Don't need to be high round to be good, Phil Taylor 340 and Kendrick Ellis 340 can be had mid rounds and will be good players in the league. If Troupe and Carrington can improve we would be better off with OLB as first pick, which should be Robert Quinn, Ryan Kerrigan or Von Miller.

  14.

Can Dareus can project to OLB or am I thinking of someone else?

Dareus is a 306 Lb end for Alabama and is in no way an OLB. Maybe your'e thinking of Bowers who is smaller but can not play OLB either and is way overrated. Robert quinn DE from North Carolina would be the best option for for OLB on a pure ability and production but he was suspended last year, so that could drop him, otherwise he may have been #1 overall.

  15. It wasn't the Bills who told him to slim down. He did it in college to be better conditioned. In his junior year he played as high as 345 and slimmed down to 315. So he dropped 30 pounds and he had an outstanding senior year being able to play 3 downs.

Troup will bulk up a bit as he is currently 315 he should be able to add 10 pounds to his frame and not lose his mobility or conditioning which is solid for a 3-4 DT to be 6 foot 3 and 325. Vince Wilfork considered one of if not the best one gap run defenders in the league is 6 foot 2 and 325. Which if Troup added 10 pounds to his frame would be the same weight and only 1 inch taller.

Weight is not the be all end all to how good a run defender you are. Kyle Williams plays the run pretty well and is only what 306-308. Jay Ratlif plays NT for the Cowboys and is a multi-time pro-bowler and considered one of the best NT's in the league and he plays at 306.

Guys who weight 330 plus get pushed around all the time or have limitations on how many downs they can play so weight is only one factor in how good a player can defend the run.

Jay Ratlif, yeah just like kyle williams and we still can't stop the run. Vince Wilfork is way over 325, Teams still lie about their players heights and weights. Remeber Ted Washington the best NT of all time, Parcells said he'd bet good money that he was 380 - 400 Lbs. The point is the Nose needs to be massive and the best NTs in the league are. Ten Lbs on his Troupes frame isn't going to cut it, he would do well to get back up to 345.

  16. You do know that Troupe SLIMMED DOWN to 315 pounds that is not his natural weight?

This is the thing with Troupe.....he isnt done growing yet....a year of NFL conditioning is gonna do wonders for this kid just like Carrington. What you have with him is a kid who is very well biult in the LOWER body. Who will put on some mass and strength in the upper body. This is not a situation of a DT who had to add weight to play in the NFL Troupe is a big boy.

By the way....Carrington who is a prototype DE in a 3-4 is actually around 290

Who ever told him to slim down was an idiot and Carrington should get bigger too, 320 would be good for his frame. Haloti Ngata is 350 at end, which is unusual but 34 ends should be over 300.
