  1. Also, more specific on topic, I think Boettger has been underrated and strong in ways that *don't* get him noticed. Ike has been, IMO, the epitome of what good coaching does: take raw talent and work with it to become its full potential. To that end, credit McD and the Offensive staff in getting Ike to be much improved and maybe even, really, really good.

I don’t understand the sudden movement to get rid of John Brown & Mitch Morse for cap savings. All we have to resign are Feliciano, Daryl Williams & Matt Milano.

Will be hard to figure it out with a tight cap, but there’s still draft picks to replace one of them if they have to walk. Whatever the answer, whether it be draft picks or restructures, I doubt the Bills will cut a quality starter in either Morse or Brown.

As for the question, resign both Feliciano & Williams if possible. Let Ford start at the beginning of the year in a big prove it year, and pull him in favor of Boettger if need be.

Dawkins - Feliciano - Morse - Ford - Williams with Boettger as an insurance policy if Ford doesn’t pan out should be just fine.

I like John Brown as well and think he adds a speed dynamic this Offense needs, but his Dead Cap hit next year is $1.6 mill vs. the full $7.9 million. That's $6.3 million savings in a year when Cap Space will be premium and there are other needs the team will have to consider. I'm NOT saying the Bills shouldn't keep him, but I am saying it's worth a strong review.

  3. I'm glad the FO and the coaching staff will be able to remain consistent and stable since this is the first year of real, significant success. However, as with any successful organization in any industry or profession, I have to believe McD and Beane have already planned for how succession will occur when certain key personnel take their next steps in their career.

When Beane took over, it became really apparent that he had a knack for attracting quality talent at all levels and then as the seasons have gone on, that he can retrain them as well. Those are two different capacities for excellence and so far, he's demonstrated proficiency in both. Now, the next will be can he - and to a similar extent McDermott - identify and mentor the secondary layer of leadership so as to continue their success even in the face of promotions, retirements, etc. That, in my mind, will close the loop in bringing clarity to the capabilities of the organization and how far they've come as a franchise. 4. I too believe the Bills need to add an Offensive weapon in the role of a RB, as much as I like Moss and Singletary. However, I also think Williams showed against Miami - and a very talented and motivated Defense - can be a powerful RB, that what is needed is more of the Thurman type of RB. To me, as much as I like Harris as the pure RB in the Draft, Etienne is more of the Thurman type RB, IMHO. Etienne is a very fast, shifty, pass catching RB who can be used in a variety of ways bringing multiple means to effect the Offense more so, IMO, than many others in the Draft.

If this were last year, I'd be all over Harris hoping he could be the strong, power RB - but with Moss / Williams and then Etienne as the all-purpose threat, that just makes more sense in my mind. Big question, will Etienne be there when the Bills Draft? I don't think so....but if you're looking for the Thurman 2.0, in the contemporary NFL, I think Etienne is more in that mold.

  5. Please don't misunderstand this (for those who rush to judgment) but while I certainly wish the best for Daboll, I'm glad this distraction is over for him and the Bills. I tend to think some of the miscues and struggles on Offense the last two weeks, while largely contributed to the quality of the Defenses they've faced and somewhat based on personnel injuries or limitations and a little due to weather on Saturday, was contributed to some of these distractions for him. I'm NOT, I repeat I am NOT questioning him or his work ethic or commitment to the team. Please don't twist my words or contrive some narrative, but as for any person, it is difficult to be focused on a job interview that is a serious pay increase and the pinnacle of your career ladder while also spending countless hours concocting a game plan for two of the league's top 10 Defenses.

In short, this timing is perfect. Kansas City will require all of the cylinders to be firing on both Offense and Defense, and his renewed focus couldn't happen at a better time - again, that's not to say he was shirking his duties or didn't care, blah, blah, blah - it's human nature to be torn between the present demands on your time and your future hopes and dreams. So, on to Kansas City and all aboard this train.

  6. I'm glad the Chargers' job is now off the table for Daboll, because as I said last week - in my mind, the longer the search went on the more likely Daboll was to have that job. However, while none of us will know for some time -it's also *possible* - although very unlikely - Daboll informed the Chargers he didn't want the job and to move forward. I know, it's wishful thinking but it's possible.

  7. Daboll and Allen were quite good. There isn't much to complain about IMHO and the first overthrow to Diggs, seeing that he would have sauntered into the End Zone, was a bit frustrating until you could see more clearly - and here Al and Chris talk about - the wind. That made a lot more sense to me given how good Allen has been on the long ball this year, absent the weeks he struggled with his shoulder injury.

The one exception I take is for some of the folks who claim we have "no running game". There is a difference between being forced to run the ball because the passing game isn't working, or settling on the ideal of balance vs. "can't" run the ball because the Offensive Line or the RBs aren't good enough to do it. However, during the final 4 minutes of the Steelers game the Bills were in predictable running situations and continued to run the ball effectively to the point of not allowing the ball to leave their possession - and mind you, that was against a top tier Defense.

More to the point, here are some of the running stats from this year against our opponents:

    Miami: 112

    Rams: 101

    Jets: 126

    *Pats: 190

    Chargers: 172

    Steelers: 104

    Broncos: 182

    *Pats: 130

    Link: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/buf/2020.htm

The point here is that against some very good Defenses the Bills ran the ball effectively enough, ESPECIALLY when you consider the passing stats in some of these games. Daboll said after one of the games, and I can't recall which one, that the Bills can run the ball when they "choose" to - and to a certain extent the stats support that statement. Now, the Titans or Rams the Bills are not....but I think sometimes because we "see" all of the passing plays, we forget some of the running plays. And, for sure some of these stats are also Allen runs and he deserves credit without a doubt, but in other games / situations, the running game is doing it's job. All in all, I just wanted to put some context that with Allen and Daboll we are a pass *first* team, but that doesn't mean we "can't" run the ball. Even the Ravens game was accentuated by the opening drive of the second half when Singletary had a couple of good and important runs.

They’ve had one zoom call. He may get the job ultimately. But there is no “understanding”. They are interviewing everyone and it is spanos decision. Spanos does not care if he went to st. Francis. He wants someone who owns the room and demands respect from the players. Maybe that’s him, I have no idea.

Which is why I prefaced my statement to, "the longer the Chargers' job draws out" - because as time goes on and the coaching carousel has fewer and fewer seats available, the more it seems IMO that Daboll is the priority for L.A. I hope Daboll stays as he's done a remarkable job and I don't want him going anywhere!!! But, L.A. would also seem to be quite a good fit for him, the Telesco "ghost" connection aside.

  9. IMHO, the longer the Chargers job draws out - the more likely it is Daboll. It would seem that maybe Daboll and Telesco have an understanding that in order to not distract from the Bills or their task in front of them, that any announcement (official anyways) would be made once either, 1. Bills are out of the playoffs OR 2. Bills win AFC Title and have two weeks before the Super Bowl.

  10. The strangest thing about all of this, was just *how* committed the Dolphins are to Tua for next season. If they had spent this year's 1st Round pick on Tua in addition to last year's based off a trade, that would make more sense to me. But with all of the Draft picks they have this season and owning Houston's top 5 pick, they're in a rare situation to be able to take a top QB in the top 5 OR, take complementary pieces and use one of the lower 1sts or a 2nd on another QB and let there be a competition for the position.

Committing to Tua full on, no questions asked at this point is a risky situation for Flores and his credibility with his players, as evidenced by the article. Moreover, it does damage to the culture he's worked hard to build and establish. If he were a coach who had 7-8 years in and had several playoff victories with consistently winning records each year, he'd probably be given a wider berth to make this decision. But at the end of his second season in the dead center of the full rebuild cycle, is really odd in my mind.

  11. Saleh is a terrific coach and the Jets already have a strong Defense with good personnel. But, if I'm the Jets I look for a HC who can develop Darnold and drastically improve that Offense. They'll have Draft picks and money, so they need to ensure Darnold's improvement. Pederson might be just the guy or if Saleh has a really strong OC as a candidate in his mind, that might be a good formula as well: build on the strength of the team and put an Offensive expert in total control of that side of the ball.

Just not sure who that OC would be to complement Saleh or any other Defensive minded / talented HC. I'm sure they're out there, I just have paid much attention. I've gotten used to this making the post-season and focusing on winning thing.....

  12. Kudos to Frazier! He deserves the interview and serious consideration for HC job again. I don't know IF he has the mentality to be a HC, especially in the current NFL that is so Offense-centered, but he is a very good coach and seems like a genuinely good man. I do know his players love to play for him and respect him, and that's half the battle in the NFL. I'd be happy for him to get a promotion and not too worried about that side of the ball since I trust McD's chops in choosing good personnel / coaches to get in synergy with his vision and philosophy. Either way, wish Frazier the best of luck.

I found this interesting more so because while most of the Buffalo fans have long been convinced of Josh Allen's potential, this demonstrates that on a weekend where the Bills faced the ONLY team in the playoffs that were ranked in the top 10 in both Defense AND Offense, and found a way to win, Josh Allen does a remarkable job over Brady, Rivers, Brees and Wilson.

I know I'm preaching to the choir on this board, but it felt like - given this is Josh's first playoff win (hopefully of many to come, including three more this year) - it deserved it's own recognition. I know the stats are in other threads and there are loads of conversations, but in my mind this was a succinct way to put his performance up against his cohorts and in context of facing a difficult opponent.

I had the feeling all week that this was going to be a much tougher game than many expected. The Colts are a solid, well-coached team whose strengths match up well with the Bills’ weaknesses. I also felt that this Bills team, for all they have accomplished, still had not proven — to themselves or their fans — that they are capable of a postseason run. The playoffs are a different animal, and persevering through a stressful game like yesterday is, I believe, what this team needed in order to make a truly special run possible. It was another box that was checked off — “can the team win in the postseason in a pressure situation” — and the key players showed up when they were needed most.

I believe that the overwhelming sentiment in the locker room after the game was likely one of relief. The monkey is off their backs. I absolutely feel as though the team that takes the field next week is capable of dominating the way they did to close out the regular season.

This is going to be a fun ride and it’s only just beginning.

I agree with this overall sentiment. But in a thread last week when all I said was that Josh had to “prove” he could get all the accolades and yet STILL deliver as he handles new found success, you said it was unnecessary. Even more you took exception to the idea that all I was doing was pointing out how great he’s been but that handling success & failure are two different things. He’s shown he can rise above all the doubt, negativity and lack of faith in him, he just needed to KEEP doing the same level of production while being the focus of praise for this team and himself.

Essentially we made the same point just from a different angle and you incorporated all of the players, and I agree with that as well.

The nuanced differences aside, I like this post and appreciate you pointing it out for discussion.

  15. Keep in mind when the Bills played Steelers earlier this year, Pitt was without Spillane and V. Williams while also being down an Offensive Lineman. So, they’ll be healthier. I’m not saying I’d rather the Bills face another team, but let’s not think the game last month will look like one they could play next week.

  16. I recall reading several pieces on McDermott as he made the rounds and thinking that it felt different this time. It was just "a name" or a flash in the pan type of hype, the search conducted felt didactic, truly strategic and with reason and logic to drive their objectives. In other words, to me the emotion and rush to judgment was removed and they utilized the league's resources which evaluate candidates objectively and make recommendations.

Once he took over the role and I started to read and hear more, the more confident I became. Once Beane was brought on and then the talent in the Front Office assembled and read more of their resumes, the more excited I became. After the Draft and into the summer when trades started taking place their identity and values began to take shape and my resolve in my "trust" in them grew. By the time the 2018 Draft came around and decisions were made, I felt confidence in the team and the FO, which was the first time I could say that with conviction since the 90's.

McDermott caught a lot of flak on this board because of his clapping, some panned clichés when he first came on and his general approach in the media. But to me, he was careful to keep issues between him and his players or staff yet honest enough to not feel like listening to him was a waste of time. Beane's transparency from the beginning was remarkable in my mind and to me, he endeared himself to the fan base in those very moments. All in all, once the Bills started playing and players started talking about the team and the difference in culture, I couldn't have constructed a better HC for the Bills.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.indystar.com/amp/6573537002.                The guy is a great football player, no doubt and is clearly better than Edmunds but hindsight is always 20/20. He could be a big factor in the game Saturday. He’s a playmaker.

I don't think Leonard is "clearly better" than Edmunds. Edmunds is 22 years old and still growing into that large frame, while also showing some terrific promise as he incrementally improves. Folks were down on Edmunds earlier in the year but fail to fully account for his injury and how significant it was for his ability to play. Leonard is 25 years old and the Colts play a different type of Defense. Now, does Leonard put up more stats? No way to disagree, but does that make him "clearly better"? Not in my opinion.

If in 3 years Edmunds hasn't shown to play at or above Leonard's level of play within the Defense McD / Frazier run, then I'll concede the point. But right now, Edmunds looks like he's rounding into form and his age can't be ignored when comparing the two players.

Oh, enough with the "prove it" crap -- there is literally NOTHING that suggests Josh Allen wants anything other than to win and keep winning.

Seriously?? All I said was that, "can he stay hungry and humble?" after a season of many well-deserved accolades and you're suggesting there is no "prove it"? It's literally just saying, "he hasn't experienced this kind of notoriety and success before and now he just needs to stay as driven as he's always been in the MIDST of his personal success" and because he's NEVER done it before (because he hasn't had the opportunity to do so) - that makes my hope for his continued success, crap?

C'mon....this wreaks of someone saying a simple logic statement of - you've never done this before, so just go do what we believe you will and show us that you will actually do it....why is that so hard? I've loved this team for over 30 years after moving around the country and settling in Central New York when I was 12 and I've lived all the highs and lows since 1989 and I'm so much in love with this team and all that it and the franchise and Bills Mafia stands for, that I cannot even begin to put it all into words. From the death blow of "Wide Right" to the ecstasy of Van Miller's "It is Fan-demonium" to the drought ugliness to the remarkable odds being defeated for the Bills' snap of that same drought three years ago....so to simply ask anyone just keep doing it and showing everyone, including me, that it's all for real and to stay - is not that much to ask.

He wants to win in the playoffs. What happened last year has been burning inside of him for 12 months. You can tell when he is interviewed. It is all he wants. I’m sure he’s proud of the awards but they do not drive him.

100% agree. And I'm not saying you were insinuating this, but it's remarkable how often someone will jump on something and dismiss the context. All I said was, "he needs to prove it", in that he just needs to actually do the playing and show what all of us *believe* is inside of him: a relentless will to win. We've seen it through the first three years, with the first two marred by youthful mistakes and a lack of development (hence, 'raw'), and now he's put sooooo much of it together - at times it actually makes me giddy to see it play out on the field and read about this team!! I freakin' love it!

Now, he just has to put it together on the field - in the playoffs.

  20. Remarkable season and recognition continues for Josh Allen. Hopefully, this adds to his MVP conversation - but more importantly, how does he handle this success? Does he stay hungry and humble? My instinct says, "Of course!", but like this year - he has to prove it. Plus, now it's crunch time - all the season stats and accolades are now virtually meaningless, it's all about the win and advance scenario. And, honestly from everything I've seen this season and read this week....he knows it, is committed to it, and focused on just that: win each week to keep playing until Lombardi is at One Bills Drive. #GoBills!

I know we are humming along but I think in the off season there is a few upgrades we have to make and here is what I think we can do

    Zach ertz

Im not sure what his deal is but he is obviously talented and I think he would take our offense to the next level.

    NY Giants

Look I don't know what the giants are doing but I propose this

Singletary  and our 1st round pick for Saquon.  Obviously Saquon would be a huge upgrade and we have Zack moss and other depth at RB. I think they would listen...

    Thoughts?

I'm not sure if this is covered elsewhere, but Ertz's Cap hit would be around $12 million, and for me that's a hard pass - that's obviously in terms of a trade. Now, if the Eagles want to eat ~$7 million and cut him, then the Bills could sign him to a FA contract for roughly ~$3 million / AAV for a couple years, but that's the ceiling in my mind. Honestly, I don't even know that I'd want the Bills to sign him for that or maybe at all. People often forget it takes time for a TE to develop, and Knox is right on that development curve. Knox's third year should be a big step forward, but given how raw he was, I'd say his 4th and final year on the Rookie deal is when we see Knox's true potential. That in mind, I'd Draft a TE in the 3rd or 4th round again and let them develop as well since Knox should be trending up (as just stated) and it keeps the spending elsewhere, i.e. the Offensive Line since FA money will be tight.

Moreover, Ertz playing a Kroft type role doesn't seem to be the kind of thing he'd be looking for since he's at the beginning of the end for his career and would want to revive it somewhere that he can play a more prominent role. Honestly, depending on what the Pats do at QB and if the Eagles cut him, that's a place that would make sense. Use of the position in a McDaniel's system with most likely a young, developing QB would make sense. Several other places come to mind as well.

Here's the link to the Ertz contract for point of reference:
