I realize that reality is of little importance to you and I am loathe to give you the attention you so desperately crave, but this info is not exactly hard to find so I ask why you didn't answer these questions yourself?

The #1 defense in 2020 had no opt outs and was one of the lowest in roster turnover (no "starters" changed from 2019). All of their coaches returned.

Agreed, as my follow-up to his question provided additional context also.

Extremely relevant in a topic about the defense.

    EYEROLL

So did the #1 defense last year have to deal with personnel changes, opt outs or a shortened offseason?

Name which defenders are currently on our roster and better than the ones I listed?

Intentionally or not, you typed out the list of hacks and bums and I salute you. Point well made.

Bolded was your response to my post:

The L.A. Rams had the #1 Defense last year and they had 1 player opt out, which led the league in fewest number of opt-out players.

The Rams didn't have to change their schedule due to the impact of COVID, whereas a number of other teams including the Bills who did...and in fact played the Titans and Chiefs who were two of the best AFC teams from the year prior and proved to be again this year in back-to-back weeks, which impacted their Defense

Regarding the Rams: of the 6 games in which the Defense allowed more than 300 yards to the opponent's Offense, 4 of them came in the first 8 games - so half of their first 8 played and another which fell just short at 295 yards. Meaning, their Defense got much better as the season went on as well, but they had all of their previous year's starters, and one Aaron Donald which played at an MVP level. Not shockingly, the first three games were among the worst 4 games in yards allowed and in the final 8 games of the regular season, 5 of their best games all came in succession to end the season. In other words, the Rams' #1 Defense got better over the course of the year, generally speaking, AND didn't have COVID opt outs or schedule changes, significant injuries to starters, had a MVP level performance from an already DPOY from Donald, and played a weaker schedule than the Bills since the Bills had THE toughest schedule in the NFL.

Again, this is just for context. I'm NOT saying the Bills Defense is or was better or any of that...but to say that Beane can't draft players or bring in quality FAs that can have a measurable impact on the Defense, is a blatant disregard for logic and facts. Sometimes, we want to see the '85 Bears Defense all the time, in every game, every year and we fail to account for context. IMHO, that was what your statement of opinion failed to do...take the totality of circumstances into effect, not to mention the several years prior that showed Beane does in fact have a pretty solid track record for Drafting difference makers on both sides of the ball. McD has his in-put no doubt, but to attribute it all or nothing to either person would be faulty in my mind.

Every team had no offseason last year. It was a global pandemic, not just in Erie County.

Our per drive averages were mediocre.

Which is why the NFL last year saw historic numbers of Offensive production. The lack of Pre-Season and normal off-season programming affected Defenses more than it did Offenses for a variety of reasons. The Bills were not the only team to have a slow start to their Defensive season. More importantly, their adaptation to the personnel changes forced by injuries, opt-outs, and player subs leading to a very good second half of the season Defense shows just how little insight you have into what Beane has or hasn't done.

  4. For this team, in this Draft year for several reasons, I agree with trading up - just not in the 1st Round. Bills stay at 30 and can take BPA which could be a CB, DE/Edge, or a RB. But then, I would sell all remaining picks to get 2 or 3 players in the second and third round. That would make 3 or 4 players and that's probably about it that make the roster and contribute. In no particular order: CB, RB, DE, TE....that's it.

Bills just signed Milano, Mongo and D. Williams to multi-year extensions. If the Bills were to trade for a TE, then I could see that pick morph into a WR to help cascade the aging group as most likely Sanders and Beasley are out next year. But with a big WR in Hodgins who didn't even get a chance to play last year and will most likely at least see some opportunities, it's hard to know if he's in the long-term plans or not due to last year's injury.

All that said, Bills have good depth at most positions with a mix of vet and young players except for the ones noted above.

  5. I loved Anthony Miller coming out of college and I think if it's a late Round pick, it's an easy phone call to the Bears for the Bills. Cole had a great year last year but is entering his final year and another year older, and Anthony can grow into a role in this Offense with little to no cost. Especially considering the Bills' Draft picks aren't going to have much opportunity to make the final 53 man roster.

  6. Let's also keep in mind Harry was coming off an ACL tear in which it routinely takes 14+ months to get back to full strength and ability. That just so happened to align with his impact, while I'm also sure his removal from game days was helpful in getting him to focus. The Draft and Harry coming back healthy with a full Off-season to hone and refine his skills has me thinking this could be a good year for IDL.

  7. I don't have any "one" player or position, because I really do trust Beane and his team of scouts and Front Office personnel to make a good decision. What I will say, is that this entire Draft, for various reasons, screams trading picks for moving up in nearly every Round except the 1st.

So, between limited game action video from 2020 to a deep roster of talent nearly everywhere, this is a Draft that would seem to make sense to stay put at 30, DON'T trade down, but then spend most of the remaining Draft capital to Draft in Rounds 2 and 3. These Buffalo Bills are F-I-N-A-L-L-Y at point where it's unlikely 7 Draft picks make the active roster which translates to quality, not quantity IMHO.

Take a CB, DE, RB and TE....and that's it. In whatever order Beane and his people deem most valuable in their respective Draft positions.

  8. I don't see any ads....

However, it's remarkable how a terrific resource for fans is somehow also supposed to take the vow of poverty and dedicate people's lives to the service of others for a football team. I LOVE the Bills and I LOVE to follow all things Bills related and I'm passionate about football in general but I don't think any of us should expect or require another person to carry content for us to consume at their own cost, be it due to financial implications or time away from things that actually matter in the grand scheme of life. If they do it out of the abundance of equal passion - wonderful, I'm grateful - if they don't, I'd be disappointed but completely understand.

No person should have to turn away a revenue stream to help support this forum - considering IT'S FREE - for any reason. If one day it comes to having to pay a monthly fee, I'll decide then if I want to invest my money. Until then, whatever SDS needs to do to help off-set personal costs, so be it....

Regardless, count me among the many who is grateful and appreciates this forum and most of the good natured folks that come with it.

    Go Bills!

  9. I've said it in other places and times so I won't rehash everything that's been said here or where I've piped in at other times. But, I will say this: a dome in this weather, given the current social climate and the age group the team will be appealing to in the next 20 years, along with the Offense slanted rules in the NFL AND that another game is being added in January, just makes too much sense.

Nostalgia is wonderful, but it belongs in the past. A dome for Buffalo is contemporary for all the reasons previously stated and I for one, sincerely hope it happens.

  10. Knowing nothing about Tyrell when the Bills announced the signing, I've since watched some Cover1 stuff on Twitter. While I don't know that it drastically changes anything for the Bills in terms of immediate production, I will say that I'm more impressed than the name would indicate.

Cover1 did a nice job of cutting some of the plays and showing what he can do and honestly, in terms of depth and adding to the overall roster - hard to believe there's much out there at this point, a.k.a. price point, that could do a better job of having a legitimate chance of adding depth to a position that needs it. Need a bit of context with this stat.

Allen can throw a rope 20+ yards down the field... doesn't necessarily mean it was a deep ball throw aka similar to the deep balls Russel Wilson is so good at... like the one he connected on with Diggs against the Broncos.... or the ones he missed on against the Ravens in the playoffs(yes I know, the wind).... also a bad overthrow can be misinterpreted as a throwaway.

I'd have to go back and rewatch the games after the Oakland game.... his deep ball looked terrific up until that game, and then regressed up until later in the season where it improved again.

And, it might or it might not have something to do with it, but let's keep in mind the shoulder injury that took several weeks to heal. Those Titans and Chiefs games followed and it was ugly.

He started out the season with a much improved deep ball... then reverted back to it being a struggle again.

Allens terrific but his deep ball still needs work.

    For reference here's an article:

    https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/analysis-charts-show-how-josh-allen-improved-deep-middle-short/article_baf979b2-61a3-11eb-ab98-eb290c8aca80.html#tracking-source=in-article

"In 2020, Allen jumped to an adjusted completion rate of 47.2% on passes 20-plus yards downfield, factoring drops and throwaways. That ranked sixth best in the NFL among players who had at least 50 deep attempts and ninth best among starters overall, according to Pro Football Focus. It was the biggest improvement in the league. Allen’s 11 TDs on deep balls tied for fifth most."

I don't disagree with your statement, but I also wanted to put that statement into some objective context. It could read to some as though what you're saying is, "Allen's a great QB, despite his deep ball woes" and yet, information or data wouldn't support that statement entirely. So, while he is still a work in progress, I want to make sure we're giving credit where it's due for Allen in relation to the rest of the league.

I don't see the point in unlocking the run game.

I see the point in making our passing game better, more explosive, and more consistent.

We need home run hitter speed threats on offense and until Josh Allen can actually hit a deep pass, it's always going to be limited.

It's almost as if you missed the ENTIRE Bills' season for 2020...

Brown Miami TD, 50+ yarder to Diggs in Denver, the Diggs TD against Indy, Gabriel Davis 30+ yarders ON THE SIDELINE against Indy, the 50+ yard completion to Diggs in Vegas, I mean seriously!! No, not every long pass is going to be completed, it's why they're low percentage throws but this season, his drastic improvement was one of the major highlights of the Bills' Offense. So for you to make this statement is highly questionable at best.

  14. I'm in favor of adding a 17th game by reducing the Pre-Season by one game. Mainly, because I love the game. That said, I think the most I would support is an 18th game, but not giving up another Pre-Season game because it takes those three games to get guys more into game shape and to evaluate the players which are on the fringe of the roster.

Part of the attraction for the NFL is that each game has real, significant meaning so putting more games on the calendar is tricky for that purpose in my opinion.

I think he's great for that locker room and he seems to be a genuinely good person who loves this team. I also think we ALL hope he earns a bigger role in the Offense because he seems to have the athleticism for the Slot WR role. I hope he can put it together and he and Cole can either rotate out without losing productivity or they can put them in 4 WR sets with he and Cole across the middle and it work well. I also hope more of his Punt Return duties look like the last one against Miami.

What’s your 40 time? Can you run a Post?

Hahaha!!! Awesome, yup - total typo....will go back and Edit that as it should say "it"....

To answer your question, 40 time is lighting quick for an elephant, around 27.2....and the only Post I could run to, is a Post-Office....

  17. He's loved being a part of the team, and that makes me happy to see a guy who has a defined role and *could* do even more want to be with this team as it continues ascent to the top of the NFL. I too think he should be given KR / PR duties given how well he did in his limited opportunities. Also, he might be a good Slot WR, quick twitch-speed option for the Offense. The Draft can add size at WR plus Davis and Hodgins are already good value sized WRs.

Edit: "I" am definitively, unequivocally NOT a good Slot WR, but "HE" might be....

  18. No...just, no. In a Cap reduced year, Draft picks due to their relative financial commitment, will be a premium even more than most years. I would agree that as the Bills build depth and spend wisely in FA, that Beane and company will value strategic premium single value players over breadth of talent through the Draft. But, this year, as I noted the challenges, the Draft is a key way to acquire good talent at a very reasonable cost.

To reiterate, I do NOT feel that will always be the path of greatest prudence in the years to come when the Cap rebounds and good players are retained much like they've been the last 2 Off-seasons. I think Reid did this with Mahomes. They built a generally deep team of talent at various positions and sold out to get their Franchise QB, thankfully the Bills will not need to do that (assuming Josh continues his trajectory and stays healthy) but a similar approach nonetheless.

Why dylan Moses?  I’d be super pissed if we draft him in rd 2 at this point.  Much better off drafting an edge or CB in rd 2 imo.  Moses plays milanos positions

Based on value - at the time, the highest rated Edge was approaching the 90’s....it was a Draft simulated with a ton of Edge players going early. So, considering Klein and the value of athletic LBer needed in the coverage scheme while not yielding too much in run support. I also wanted to keep in mind that injuries played a key role in the LB core last year and we saw a dramatic drop off in Defensive efficiency.

  20. This was a Free Agent strategy very few, if any, saw coming but leave it to Beane to make an under-the-radar FA acquisition that is truly critical for the team's success. Mitch as Josh's back-up is such a key move by this Front Office. It signals that the team as a whole has taken tremendous strides toward expected excellence. Again, well done to Beane and his staff.

Yeah but Milano and Williams back... I’ll take that...

And truthfully, that's how good / great teams operate. You Draft well, you strategically spend money in FA, and when warranted you retain the pieces that are building blocks. Not being big players in FA means the rest of it is going well and the team is getting right. Some perennially good NFL teams stay away from the bright stars of FA only to keep winning year in and year out. That's how this gets done, by building the culture and Drafting well and keeping the good players that contribute to the system. Beane continues to prove himself over and over again and I couldn't be happier. Nobody is perfect, but this man and his staff are knocking it out each Off-Season.
