  1. Is Thomas Jones one of the 5 fastest in the NFL too? Because I watched Poz play an absolute stinker in the Meadow Lands this year, a big reason Thomas Jones had 2 career long runs that game.

Is Chris Johnson fast and a great back? Yes

Has Posluszny played terrible all year? Yes

We need a new MLB next year, for sure. He is way too slow in covwerage and also can not make tackles at the line of scrimmage. Watch Chris Johnson's last TD run. Scott just about had Johnson corraled then Poz comes in gets a piece of Chris Johnson, but more importantly a good piece of Scott enabling Johnson to get away from Scott and get the TD.

Watch some film of Winfield Poz, taking out their legs is a lot more effective then trying to take them down chest high.

Don't forget Ryan "speed demon" Moats....Poz will excel off of the bench playing behind a MLB that is athletic and smart enough to handle the position. If we have new management next year that is looking to increase draft picks Poz may be worth a 3rd round or maybe even a 2nd round pick if paired with another player in a trade.

  2. Are you always wrong? Seriously, Dungy inherited a very good Colts team and the league's best QB and arguably it's best GM when he came to Indy. He only won one SB because he got outcoached in the playoffs a number of times. Yeah, he deserves credit for turning around Tampa, but so does Gruden for turning around the Raiders.

Gruden went to a team that was in decline and took a junk QB and junk running game and turned them into a highly productive offense and beat the team he had built in Oakland in the Super Bowl. He then had to oversee a complete rebuild of that aging Tampa team. They didn't draft well and they lost two first round picks in the trade for him, but he still kept that team competitive. How good was he? Last year he had about the same roster as the Bucs have this year and nearly took them to the playoffs. This year, the Bucs are in the running for the top pick in the draft. MEANWHILE, Dungy's old team is undefeated without him.

I'm not saying Dungy isn't good, but Gruden has done a lot more with a lot less. He is the more impactful coach.

I happened to have worked in Tampa quite a bit before and after Dungy arrived. Tampa was had not made the playoffs since the Doug Williams era. They were awful. Tony was the key in building Tampa into a Superbowl Team. Gruden came in after doing a good job building the Raiders. Lets face it, he was a tuck rule away from going to the AFC championship maybe a superbowl. He eventually took the Bucs and won the big game.

Bill Polian obviously thought Tony was damn good because he hired Tony within the same week that Tampa released him.

Gruden's luck has not been as good and he is on the market..

Contrary to your opinion the Colts were coming off of a 6-10 record. Dungy had a great nucleus to work with Manning, James and Harrison. Tony led them to a 10-6 season and never looked back and eventually won his superbowl.

Once Tony put his handprint on the team they were consistant winners. Once Gruden put his handprint on the team they have been in slow decline.

How many times has Dungy's team started out to an 8-0 start. This Colt team still has Dungy's hand print. That's the sign of a well built team.

Gruden's team has been very mediocre since they won the superbowl. However the Raiders went to the superbowl the year after he left. Tony has demonstrated this ability twice where Gruden has once.

They both have very good accomplishment because they have demonstrated they can make the most of a situation but if I had my choice to pick one of them to turn my team around I would pick Parcells.

  3. I like the general theme of change. I don't quite agree with the personel you have mentioned but I understand what you are saying.

    - Remove DJ

    - Restructure your front office to the more traditional arrangement. Get a GM. Go for the up and coming name, Polian's

son comes to mind. Casserly destroys every team he has his hands on (the Redskins are a good example)

    - Upgrade your scouting personel. One of our biggest problems is talent evaluation.

    - Bring in a coach that is a proven winner or can build a winner. Gruden best team was team that he didn't build. He did a

good job with the Raiders though. Billick, Shanahan, Cowher have all won the big one but have sputtered as well.

Cowher is your best choice. Don't rule out Shottenheimer. I think they will bring strong coaching staffs as well.

    - Start purging the teams players to attaining 3 more draft picks. Use those picks to solidify your lines

    - Get a top second string QB with experience and draft a QB as well.

  4. London Fletcher is ranked second in the league in tackles right now. What happened to him? Free agency, trade, cut, injured? I guess I never knew how he left.

Easy answer...the Bills did not want to pay him the money. They justified it by saying they wanted a more attacking defense behind the line of scrimmage. It amazes me how peolple buy into the BS that management will feed them to disguise the fact that they don't want to pay the bucks.

Bills management indicated that Fletcher was tackling down field and his age was a factor. Untrue and if you have seen him play recently he is clearly better than anyone we presently have.

Remember when Pat Williams was to old and about done.....Wrong , the Bills just didn't want to pay him.

Remember when Antoine Winfield didn't create the turnovers or have a strong impact on the game.....Wrong, the Bills just didn't want to pay him.

Who knows how Kyle Williams or John McCargo would benefit by playing next to proven veterans when they were rookies.

Who knows how Poz or Ellison would benefit playing next to a proven veteran like Fletcher.

Instead I honestly do not think that Williams, McCargo, Poz, and Ellison are capable of starting on hardly any other teams.

Poz really hurts because we traded up to get him when David Harris was still on the board. We could have had Harris and an additional pick....Gotta love the Bills braintrust.

  5. Lee Evans can't get open. We put Owens beside him and he still can't get open. What a waste of money.

    He'd be a back-up anywhere else.

Amazing how he had no problem getting open for Bledsoe and JP. You think it might be the QB.......

Minnesota's WR's couldn't get open until Farve came. Atlanta's WR's couldn't get open until Ryan showed up.

Evan's would be a pro bowler if we had a consistant qb. Mould's career should be an example of how bad quarterbacking can have an impact on WR's.

  6. Good post. I have done my share of Poz bashing over time comparing him to the Boz. There are several issues regarding our line. Kyle Williams is no Pat Williams but would be even better in rotation with a two gap run stuffer like Pat Williams.

The defense needs a better offense so they aren't on the field so much. Ellison has improved more than any LB on the team which still doesn't make him one of the better OLB's by no means. When it comes to Poz lets not sugar coat this. After 3 years he doesn't have the football instincts to compensate for his lack of speed and below average pass coverage skills. Even Fewell mentioned that he needs to be more of an impact player at the end of last season.

It was mentioned that he rushed the QB in forcing his pass and help create the fumble by Slaton. When he did those things I was thinking when is the last time we saw this from Poz. We don't see these thing on a regular basis.

The real problem with Poz comes from the constant completions QB's throw in the middle of our defense. In fact many tackles by Poz in prior games are on the pass catcher in the middle that he didn't cover and even more irritating on run plays up the middle especially the ones Moats ran for TD's Poz was not looking at the fooball but looking at the traffic. Poz ran in the wrong direction of the play and was swallowed up by a lineman. He doesn't keep his gaps and the rb has a big gain. Many times when he does make the hit on a rb, the opposing rb usually get and extra 2 or 3 yards ala Brian Bosworth. The defense is designed for the LB to fill the gaps when the DT and DE's are occupied. His instinct are still very much like a rookie. Poz unless he get better is destined to a backup role like Holecek, Bailey, Patton, Maddox and Goganious he is no better at this stage of his career. We are better off drafting for a mlb with probowl potential. I don't think Poz has the speed to play outside but I could be wrong.

  7. They all came after Poz and the rest of the D were on the field for 35 minutes. You think like Jauron does...his offense sucks and he expects his D to save his azz every time. The Bills D was worn down by then. I'd tell you to watch the game but it's obviously over your head.

    PTR

The defense was on the field a lot but that's no excuse for missing gap assignments. Poz ran himself out of both plays. I know he is a fan favorite but he is part of the reason we give up so many yards on run defense.

  8. Then how do you explain for years Marv Levy ran the easiest camp in the league. Todays game has changed with all the mini camps etc, not so sure you need a hard training camp with lots of hitting. Maybe being soft you could argue that a player isn't playing with a "boo boo" but torn ligiments, broken bones isn't exactly playing soft. I think as others have stated, more to do with the Bill's drafting smaller players.

That was the rap on losing four superbowls we didn't practice with pads on during the week of the big game. When you look at the turnovers in the last 3 SB's games preparation had to be a key...A certain degree of torn muscles and even ligaments can be tied to preparation. That why hold out players tend to get injured more frequently. You don't want to kill your players in training camp but when you have a young team with very little veteran leadership you need to instill a tough training regiment....I do agree that we need to draft larger players as well...it works for Parcells

  9. Why is it that the Buffalo Bills are always the team that is most affected by injuries?

Whitner with an ankle/knee/thumb, Bryan Scott with an ankle, McKelvin with a leg, Pozluzney with a forearm (twice), TO with a toe, Edwards with a concussion, Mitchell knee, Buggs knee, Schobel with a groin, Meredith with a knee, Byrd with a (stopped watching at that point)? Why do the Bills players ALWAYS get hurt?

Are these tackling fundamentals that they are not being taught? How is it that other teams don't have these problems? I understand injuries are part of the game, but to this extent it isn't. This is butchery. For at least three consecutive years this team has been hampered by injuries and a lack of depth to support those injuries.

We finally get a bright spot on this team (Jairus Byrd) and he goes down in the 4th quarter. Have the Bills turned into footballs version of the Chicago Cubs?

This is what happens when you focus your draft on the high character intellectual types and run soft practices.

We need bigger and tougher players with talent as well as coaches that are tougher. Every team has injuries but they have well conditioned people ready to come in.

  10. 1. Fire Head Coach and place interim title on some Asst Coach.

    2. Continue until Hell Freezes over to try and get a Cowher type head coach with experience at the NFL level and also success. Have him bring in an off coord and def coord and come up with a total approach to drafting players that fit a physical, tough style of play ala the Steelers

    3. Look to trade any and all assets we have to help re-assemble this team with bigger players with a mean big defense and offensive strategy.

    4. Examples as above: Trade Lynch for #1 pick, Trade Stroud for either #1 or two #2s, Trade Witner for a #2 and anything you could get for any one of our def ends. Dump Rosco and either one of our 2 QBs for 3rd or 4th rounders.

    5. With draft choices get One big LT, One big MLB and move Poz to outside, draft big, fast DT like Arthur Jones of Syracuse in 2nd rnd with one of extra picks.

    6. Find some cocky QB that is not afraid to throw the ball for 12 to 15 yards downfield.

    7. Move Maybin to OLB

    8. Hope Ralph lets footbal guy run the show and rebuild us a team that can actually play NFL football.

Don't fully agree but I love the effort here

I would trade some assets but not the ones that possess solid veteran leadership. Keep Stroud because he is actually good and your not going to get two high picks for him. Draft another RB that can catch the football. Hold onto Lynch in the meantime until the other RB is proven then get what you can for him,in the mean time with improvements to the OL he can still be a stud. Trade Poz and Whitner if we can get 3rd round value for them. Let's face it the safeties are making more impact plays without Witner and if you saw todays TD runs by Moats straight up the middle you saw Poz clearly running away from the play as the run was coming through his gap. This is a weekly occurance. Offer Roscoe for a 3rd or 4th rounder.. ...The rest of your points I agree with.

  11. At 6-4 and 250 lbs Aaron Maybin has showed very little promise so far at the DE position. This subject has been brought up in the past and I bring it up again because in my opinion Aaron Maybin could help the Bills run stopping capabilities if moved to the LB position. Aaron Maybin's athleticism and size mainly something with which the Bills are lacking, could help plug up holes on running downs. It would allow Maybin a chance to get up to NFL speed this season in a position more suited for his size and strength.

It seems like a no brainer to me, especially considering the injuries the Bills have at the LB position.

Agreed, this is a no brainer and for the life of me I don't understand why they don't experiment.

In the past we have acquired free agents and draft picks on their ability to play more than one position. Now we have a tremendously athletic person that seems that he could make the adjustment more naturally than some..we don't even try.

Brian Orakpo and Philip Ayer is spending their time at OLB than DE. Thats because the coaching wants to get the best athletes on the field. Before the season I felt that Maybin was the tweener of the group.

Maybin holding out hurt him as far as development for this season but he will be OK in the long run. I can't help but think Darryl Talley when I see him.

I expect more common sense from our coaching staff.

  12. :worthy:

There is a nice article in today's Buffalo News about the recent success of the Texans; our opponent this coming Sunday. Talks about the success the Texans have had in drafting and KEEPING their 1st round draft picks within the last 8 years of their existence.

Here are the Bills 1st round draft picks, this decade:

2000- Erik Flowers- no longer with team (is he even in the NFL anymore?)

2001- Nate Clements- no longer with team (left as free agent to San Francisco)

2002- Mike Williams- no longer with team (One of the biggest busts (literally and figuratively) in Donahoe and NFL)

2003- Willis McGahee- no longer with team (Sent packing to Baltimore- good riddance)

2004- Lee Evans- still with team (currently struggling despite contract)

2004- JP Losman- no longer with team (currently playing for Las Vegas in minor league football)

    2005- No first round pick

2006- Donte Whitner- still with team (playing status in question with emergence of Byrd)

2007- John McCargo- still with team (but a tremendous waste of a 1st round pick and will most likely be gone after this year)

2008- Leodis McElvin- still with team

2009- Aaron Maybin- still with team

2009- Eric Wood- still with team

Now, in contrast to the Texans, based on today's Buffalo News article:

    www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/845496.

"The Texans are a team on the rise because of some outstanding drafts and shrewd free agent acquisitions. Six of their seven first-rounders are still with the team. They missed on quarterback David Carr, the No. 1 overall selection in 2002, but they hit home runs with Johnson (2003), Robinson (2004), Williams (2006), defensive tackle Amobi Okoye (2007), Brown (2008) and linebacker Brian Cushing (2009).

Johnson in particular has achieved superstar status. A physical specimen with great size and speed, the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder led the league in catches (115) and receiving yards (1,575) last season, and is first in yards (634 on 38 catches) this year. The only player to reach 500 career catches in fewer games than Johnson's 88 was Arizona's Anquan Boldin (80).

Another high-profile pick was Williams, whose No. 1 overall selection in 2006 created controversy as Texans fans coveted University of Texas quarterback and Houston native Vince Young. But Williams silenced critics by becoming the dominant pass rusher the team envisioned he would be with 36.5 sacks in three-plus seasons.

Robinson is the Texans' career leader with 13 interceptions. There have been signs of future stardom from Okoye, the youngest player drafted into the NFL at age 19, Brown and Cushing, who leads all rookies with a team-high 56 tackles.

The Texans have connected on players after Round One as well. Ryans was a second-round steal. Slaton, starting right tackle Eric Winston and wide receiver-return ace Jacoby Jones were terrific third-round finds. Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels was a hidden gem in the fourth round.

"The way you build in this league is through the draft," Kubiak said. "That's obviously the route that we decided to start taking four years ago. We put these guys to work right away. They were starting from Day One.

"Obviously, if you miss on some of those draft choices that could set you back a long, long way. We've been very fortunate that these guys are doing their job and look like they have some bright futures."

It also helps when free agent signings work out. The Texans' boldest move was their 2007 trade with Atlanta for Schaub, who spent three years backing up Michael Vick. In addition to swapping first-round draft picks, the Texans gave up second-round picks in 2007 and 2008. Then they signed Schaub to a six-year, $48 million contract.

After two injury-plagued years, Schaub is having a huge '09 season, leading the NFL in passing yards (2,074) and touchdowns (16)."

So, let's look at the Bills success of drafting 1st round success statistically for this decade.

Out of 12 1st round draft picks, 5 are no longer with the team (41.7%)

1 was traded away for the rights to Losman (8.3%)

6 are technically still with the team, but due to the Bills attempting to trade McCargo last year to Indy and his lack of playing time this year, I will not count him as "being on the team".

Therefore, 5 are still with the team (41.7%)

Even with that number, will the Bills retain Whitner once he recovers from his injury? They moved him to FS with Scott playing SS for a bigger body in the secondary to provide run support, but with the emergence of Byrd does Whitner get onto the field as a starter anymore? Would his contract then make him a rather expensive back-up and does if Byrd continues does this spend the end of Whitner and, therefore, another 1st round pick no longer with the team?

If McCargo is released after this season, that would put the number of players at 6 that are 1st round draft picks no longer with the team and moving the ratio to 50% rate of failure. Put Whitner in there, and the rate of failure jumps to 58.3%. Add that with the draft pick traded away for Losman and that jumps to a 66.6% rate of failure for the draft "experts" at OBD.

In simpler terms, the Bills are attempting to build a team with a success rate of 1/3, or 33.3%. If what the Texans Kubiak says is true in terms of building a team through the draft, the Bills are killing themselves.

Wood looks like the real deal, and McKelvin seems to be solid as well. But Maybin is also struggling for playing time- granted, he did hold out all of training camp and as per Fewell, opposing defenses are focusing on attacking Buffalo's inferior run defense- thus eliminating the need for a pass-rush specialist such as Maybin. So, it is still too early to quit on Maybin...yet.

But does this make enough of a case that Modrak should go?

With all that being Houston is not a playoff team and just started looking like a real team with the acquisition and growth of Matt Shaub. Where the Bills need to improve in many areas our quartebacking is what is hurting the team most. It reminds me of the Rob Johnson Bills. Remember our receivers were getting old, our OL needed to be upgraded and when Doug Flutie stepped in they looked like a different team. Our line was holding blocks and Eric Mould emerged. All of the WR and OL talk went away. When Johnson came back in they looked like a bad team again.

  13. i could also leave fletcher(our awful LBs not withstanding)..he is a tackle machine but those tackles usually take place 5-10 yds up field. Barely above average LB IMO. Adams was a talented fatso who played hard about 50% of the time.

If you have seen Fletcher play recently he is making tackles all over the field including behind the line of scrimmage. When they let Winfield go it was because he didn't intercept the ball enough. Pat Williams was on the wrong side of 30. I can't believe anyone buys into the BS propoganda and excuses for not wanting to pay these guys. The fact of the matter is Williams had plenty of years left and is still dominant was going to command a higher salary. Winfield was going to command top dollar being a cornerback has been a strong defender on the Vikings staff was going to command top cornerback bucks in FA. Fletcher was considered on the wrong side of 30 and tackled downfield field because he missed a step. The fact is his contract was up and he was going to command more bucks in the FA market. He was the leader of the Redskins defense when they finished 2 years in or close to the top 5 defenses. Seriously what have we replaced him with, a slow, nonhitting, injury proned, over rated Poz.

  14. And to think they beat us in Buffalo the past 2 years........whats it say about our organization.

It only says that we have a QB that can not play in conditions that are not ideal and a stupid punt returner.

They could have hired one of many potential head coaches in the off season and they went with a proven loser Mangini.

Lets see who our new head coach will be.

  15. I agree with you PushPile, it's just too damn easy for people to keep pointing to Keith Ellis for any of our defensive woes. Whoever absolutely discredits the tackles numbers is either a !@#$ing idiot or has an agenda. In either case, if it discredits anything, it is the following words that comes from that particular poster.

The bottom line is that he is reliable player, he is decent in coverage, has been very durable (which is a lot more than what I can say for many LB's in this league), and he has gotten more stout against the run. I don't know how many times I have seen him make tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage this year, certainly alot more than what I saw from him in the past.

Is he a "difference maker"? No, but he is solid, and I'm glad that he is a Bill.

As crazy as it sounds Ellison has been our most consistant LB this season and I have seen improvement each year.

Mitchell can make the impact play in coverage...average everywhere else.

Poz is good when the play comes right at him he is otherwise slow and is often pushed the extra yard or two on the initial impact...the most over rated player on defense along with Witner.

  16. How to fix the LT and QB..easy..Draft some quality players at the positions or sign quality FA's. Before that we have to take some strides in improving the way we evaluate talent.

I don't think we are far off as some may think but we can improve in many areas.

    - QB could be in the first round depending on if we make any free agent moves. Keep in mind Matt Shaub and Drew

Brees were FA acquisitions. Maybe we can get lucky here andfocus on a Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb.

    - Draft a Tackle and Guard with some size and mobilty, move Woods to Center his natural position.

    - Draft a DT to play beside Stroud if ther is a quality FA out there get him. Kyle Williams is not the answer.

    - LB's we need to upgrade the Poz and Ellison spots to faster and more physical hitters. Look at Willis, Beason and Harris

out of the same draft that Poz was drafted. Our LB's can't compare. We have to decide do we want potential pro bowlers

that play with a high level of intensity or fan favorites that give up 200 yards a game on the ground. Maybin could be

part of the solution here...if so add a DE to the mix.

    - Our secondary has good potential and depth...no need for changes here we just need to find the right combination of

personnel from the people we presently have. Lets not assume that Witner is the automatic starter in this equation.

Our draft could look some thing like this,

    1 QB / OL

    2 OL / DT

    3 DT /LB

    4 LB /DE

5 OL / DL Best Available

6 OL / DL Best Available

If we could get more picks they will probably fall in the middle rounds.

  17. I will say this: Levitre was the guy who got blown up on the safety. I watched the replay a bunch of times and I still can't quite understand how the DT (#75) basically just got inside of him and tossed him aside. It was a critical error.

Nevertheless, I think the guy's got game and he'll develop into a solid G for us. I'm actually starting to get a little excited for next year when we'll have a group of young offensive linemen with some experience playing together. I'm not sure yet about Bell or Meredith, but I think they have some good potential.

Levitre was the one that was blown up for the safety. It would have been better if we had called a play where Jackson didn't line up 7 yards deep into the end zone.

Woods and Livitre need to get better. They haven't really come together on the run blocking. Woods is clearly stronger and is a keeper. Levitre isn't as strong and needs more size. Coaching is going to play an important part on these guys development. At times I wonder if we have the coaching to do so. My issue is with Hangartner...he plays scared when snapping from the shotgun. Several games he was snapping grounders to TE, I expected better from a veteran. For next year I wouldn't mind drafting a quality guard and tackle lets move Woods to center (his natural position) and make Hangartner a backup.

  18. I agree...he was awful. He just doesnt get off his blocks and gets man handled. And when he does tackle it 7 yards down field. I gotta tell ya, Poz sucked too. He had a clear shot at the qb on a blitz and banks right into a blocker. WTF??? And he never hits! We have to have the worst LB coprs in the league.

Agree...It's hard to single out any one LB when they all suck.

Ellison should be coming off of he bench not starting.

Poz..I know the fans love him but he sucks too. Noticing that when Poz hits the opposing RB they tend to drag him 2-3 yards after the initial contact ala the "Boz". I first noticed this in the game he was initially hurt but I thought the injury may have played a part. I noticed today it happened two or three times. We need to start drafting LB's that can can hit because our present unit is soft.

I believe the third LB spot was filled by the Tops Supermarket fan of the week. Great PR move...I feel I have a shot to start next week.

  19. I think that Trent's problem is he doesn't understand when to release a ball into a route.

He definitely does not know how to throw a timing pattern - whether a slant, curl or even the deep route.

He seems to have lost all his confidence and looks completely lost out there

It's maddening to see that he can only seem to throw to a receiver that's wide open (usually the checkdown).

I much like most of you watch avidly and PVR the heck out of the game.....the O-line is not the greatest but on most drop-backs he has 4 - 6 seconds to get rid of the ball........that's enough time........look at A. Rodgers in GB - he's getting clobbered and has less time but he's had quite a few hook-ups and understands when to get rid of the ball into a pattern.......that is an instinct and trent just doesn't have it..........or he did have it but lost it........I think that is the major difference in winning and losing this year.........If you have a QB that get's it you win games........Let's see how Ryan's Hope plays this Sunday and the next couple weeks.......it's not too far fetched to see if this team pulls that aspect of it's game together we can still make the playoff's - you heard it hear first - sit down and look at the schedule that's left.......it's doable! Possibly as good as 11-5..........after all - look at the beggining of the season last year........If we can have a finish like we started last year - maybe we will be back in the playoffs before long!!!

TO eluded to it earlier this season. Trent doesn't know how to assess single coverage and ball placement. This is why he will have very few 300 yard games if any. Most QB's look for single coverage to throw in. It takes Trent longer to pull the trigger. Trent being extra careful doesn't seem to result in less picks either. Defenders are sitting on his short routes forcing him throw longer which he can't properly assess so he will not do. Other than the "go" route he will not pull the trigger. He is not a gunslinger. It is much easier to teach a gunslinging QB on how to reel it in than to teach a timid passer on how to sling it (JP Losman being the exception of course).

It will be interesting to see Fitz with a week of first team snaps. He seems to pull the trigger sooner especially on the 15-20 yard pass. I don't see TE completing the pass for Lee Evans TD against the Jets. as Fitz did.

  20. I like many of your points.

I dont think the Defense is that good. Poz and Mitchell are both just about average LB's. If you put either of them on many defenses like Baltimore, or NY Giants you would notice they are the worst of the group (proven by Mitchell).

Trent most likely is done, but I would be ok with him staying another year if we got a new coach.

Byrd is the read deal and keeping Whitner at SS would be the best move. Maybe even getting rid of Donte and keeping Wilson or Scott at SS would be smart (depends on what you could get for Whitner).

I like your point about the 3-4 but I think Schobel is too old and slow to play the position at this point in his career. If you had him make that switch 3 years ago I would have been on board. But he will fit for now. Maybin is a perfect fit for an OLB in a 3-4. Stroud is a good fit for DT in that defense. I would personally use Williams and Johnson at the both end positions. That would make for a pretty big line.

Im glad we get to see Fitz this week and most likely next. It will give us an idea if Trent is just really flawed or if he is doing exactly what the coaches want him to. If Fitz comes out and lights it up I have a hard time believing Trent was making the plays the coaches are calling. If Fitz looks like crap it might not mean anything.

If we win the next 2 Ill be optimistic, but realistically they need to win 5 of the next 6 to be in the playoff hunt. They defenately cant lose to the Jets, or Dolphins again. They must win out in the division.

Good points about our defense. Too many running back have big games and our LB are often out of position. We have no real hard hitters on our LB staff. Poz and Mitchell would look much better surrounded by better talent whether it is on the D-line or additional LB's in a 3-4.

I agree with your point on Whitner. At the beginning of the season I felt that Whitner and Poz needed to step up to live up to the billing. I don't see them as bust but but I don't see them as having much pro bowl potential. I think Byrd and Wilson so far have made more impact plays given the limited opportunities they have had. I'm not saying trade established players for draft picks because frankly I don't think we can get much for anyone on defense ,but when drafting for defense we have to realize as long as we look at Whitner and Poz as our core, we will never be better than mediocre.

I'm curious about Fitz. I would like to see if he can assess single coverage on route other than the "go" routes better than Trent. I think this is Trent's big problem. The TD to Evans against the Jets, Trent would have never thrown that pass.

  21. Yup. Jackson is smart, Parrish is stupid, and it shows big time.

Agreed... however until he is traded let just say Parrish is one of the leagues top and most explosive return men and would be a steal for any team for only a third round pick. One of the best from the U I might add. As for that play against Cleveland...those savage winds at the Ralph blew the little guy into the ball, accidentally of course.

  22. I like the linebacker trio of Harris, Poz, Palmer much better than Corto, Ellison, Palmer. and I also like Byrd and Whitner better than Byrd and Wilson. Looking forward to seeing this group take the field against the Jets.

I agree on Byrd and Whitner. I'm curious about Palmer and Harris because they showed well in the preseason but I don't think the addition of Poz really makes things better. He still is very poor on pass coverage. Opposing QB have feasted on Poz and Ellison's lack of cover skills and Poz is always a step slow on running plays to the outside. Our LB's need overhauling like so many areas of the team maybe this can be a positive start. It's definitely worth a try...but I wouldn't bet the farm on DJ and PF trying it.
