1. Here are the winning percentages of the NFL since Tommy D took over in Buffalo.

It ain't pretty. Notice that the Bills fall below the BENGALS, SAINTS, and NINERS, teams that are generally ridiculed for their incompetent management and ownership.

    1 0.267 Detroit Lions

    2 0.293 Houston Texans

    3 0.338 Arizona Cardinals

    4 0.392 Cleveland Browns

    5 0.405 Buffalo Bills

    6 0.419 Cincinnati Bengals

    7 0.419 Washington Redskins

    8 0.440 Dallas Cowboys

    9 0.446 Carolina Panthers

    10 0.446 Jacksonville Jaguars

    11 0.446 Minnesota Vikings

    12 0.446 San Francisco Niners

    13 0.459 New Orleans Saints

    14 0.459 New York Giants

    15 0.459 Oakland Raiders

    16 0.473 San Diego Chargers

    17 0.486 Chicago Bears

    18 0.500 Miami Dolphins

    19 0.500 New York Jets

    20 0.500 Tennessee Titans

    21 0.527 Atlanta Falcons

    22 0.527 Baltimore Ravens

    23 0.541 Kansas City Chiefs

    24 0.541 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    25 0.581 Seattle Seahawks

    26 0.608 St. Louis Rams

    27 0.613 Denver Broncos

    28 0.622 Green Bay Packers

    29 0.676 Indianapolis Colts

    30 0.699 Pittsburgh Steelers

    31 0.703 Philadelphia Eagles

    32 0.730 New England Patriots

  2. I don't have a good feeling about this week's game.

Carolina is a very good, well coached team. They'll be looking to rebound from last week's game.

Matchups: The Bills have the worst OL in the NFL and are going against one of the best DL in the game. The Bills will be lucky if JP Losman escapes alive.

The Bills defense is porous against a good running game and Stephen Davis is a punishing inside runner. And the Panthers can mix in the pass to keep the woeful D on its heels all day.

On the plus side, I see no reason Roscoe won't be able to have lots of returns and return yardage again.

  3. Uh, think about what you just said.  The fact that he had to return the ball 6 times is embarising enough, especially since he didn't start the game as our kick returner.  I'm not getting down on Roscoe, I thought he did a good job.  I just thought it was sad that his kick returning average was the most impressive Bills stat of the game.  Now I can sleep easy.

    511635

That's it! Clements is PotG because without him Roscoe could not have had so many freakin' returns and return yards. Makes perfect sense!

  4. Both teams had nice blocking and gave their QB time to throw, but the play that stood out for me was when Dallas sent 9 guys,  Denver picked them all up and Plummer hit the 30 yard pass for a TD to go up 14-7.

Great throw, great route, and great blitz pick-up,  I can't remember seeing anything like that coming from Buffalo in a long time and don't when it will happen in the future either.

As a fan I know where the bar is after today' and it is sad to say but  I don't believe we are close to it.

    512164

Can anyone remember the last Bills line that picked up a blitz like that?

  5. Not everyone had Williams higher rated than McKinnie. They were actually pretty close. Williams was the bigger, heavier guy and McKinnie was the guy with the freakish wingspan.

Williams did have downsides. He had a suspect knee that had some people skittish. Also, there was questions about his weight, motivation, and stamina. Unfortunately for the Buffalo Bills, these questions continue to linger. I was turned off at the time because so many were saying "he's another Leonard Davis" as if that were a good thing... I can only assume that was because they hadn't seen how miniscule Davis's impact for the Cardinals actually was/is.

  6. Since the vast majority of them have actually only been "Pat's fans" for some fraction of that 4 year period there's legitimate concerns about how they'll deal with the 75 year dry spell they're entering. Psychotropics and Antidepressants would be one way to start.

The obvious choice for them all though is to do exactly the same thing they did from 2001-2004 and buy themselves a full complement of Bengal's gear!

    511488

If they don't have the cash for that, they could always wait to see who wins the Super Bowl and then shell out for their new fav team.

  7. Fletcher not only has problems shedding blocks but is also lacking in pass covering skills. Similar to Milloy, whenever the opposition needs to find an open receiver, they can look at the "coverage" either of these players provide.

I like Fletchers hustle and enthusiasm but feel he is lacking in those areas.

    512734

    Agreed.

  8. Hmm....not so simple. Some young guys we already have must step up at various positions that could use better play. But Rome wasn't built in a day. There are many needs but the Bills must concentrate on the trenches this off-season. I've seen many a post with people basically naming every position on the team.

This team desperately needs to upgrade the middle on Defense ( Including MLB ) and at least 2-3 spots on the OL.

Preston should be under Center now, getting some reps with Losman. Teague will not be missed at all. Will Mike Williams actually become a Guard or is he due to be cut ?  Free Agency seems to have a few good Guard candidates available. The Draft is deep at quality OT's, so the OL could realistically receive a postive upgrade during the upcoming off-season.

I have doubts about the DT position receiving such immediate help. Very thin in Free Agency and the draft. This is where the scouts have to ID some good talent flying under the radar on draft day, since the name guys at the top all have some question marks surrounding them. Bills desperately need to add 2 big DT's.

MLB ? Fletcher has a big heart but is just too small and cannot shed the OL or FB that engages him. He's as much to blame with the big runs up the middle as the poor DT play. I don't get caught up in the tackle stats. Try making the tackles near the line of scrimmage. If a stud MLB like A.J. Hawk is on the draft board, you take him.

If Clements leaves, then Greer,King or someone else has to step up. FA WR's are a dime a dozen every spring. Shouldn't be hard to find a good hands vet if Moulds is cut. Everett should get his shot at TE . We can't afford picks at the so-called skilled positions this year. Others are more pressing

The Bills need to address the shortages in the trenches, first and foremost. DL,OL and MLB.

I'll be interested to see how TD and this Coaching staff survive this off-season. The honeymoon is long over and the upcoming free agency period and draft cannot be screwed up.

    511792

Good post. The Bills could go offensive line and just about anywhere on defense, although well spent in the front 7.

QB may also be an issue. One hopes the coaches use the remaining snaps this season as time to evaluate JP with live ammo flying through the air... but, I'm not holding my breath.

If they draft another WR,RB,TE,FB then I'd recommend that the GM simply gets fired right on camera during the ESPN coverage.

  9. Any scrub LB looks real good if nobody blocks him. I mean look at all the Hall-of-Famers playing for the Chargers last week. Those LBs were dominating the Bills offense.

Greatest isn't what someone does when everything is going his way. It's what someone does when there is adversity.

London Fletcher is a small, speed LB who can't play through blockers. He has hustle and gets back into plays, albeit after the damage is done. I don't really see why people think this guy is so great. Maybe they've just never seen Ray Lewis or Brian Urlacher.

  10. I give it a C-.

Its bad,  but it could be worse.  A LOT worse. 2000 was an 'F' draft.  There are no top tier starters from this draft, but at least these guys have made some contribution.  The real problem is that its not worth making a major effort to keep any of these guys once their contracts are up.

    512104

We'll have to agree to disagree. The Bills were drafting at the top of the order in this draft and picked up nothing but some role players. That's nothing short of outright failure in my book. That sort of drafting is why teams like the Arizona Cardinals and Detriot Lions have sucked forever. It is also a legitimate basis for fans to question Mr. Teflon and his famed god-like status as a draft genius. Donahoe and Modrak just plain blew it. Picking in the top of the order, they should have been able to find at least one All-Pro to build the franchise around. I suspect that by the start of next year, there will be almost nothing left of this draft on the roster -- only the residual lingering bad taste of BUSTVILLE.

  11. I say only because TD already extended Wire's contract AND

Denney may get more $$$ from another team.

And Ryan Denney makes this draft better than an F, but not by much...

especially since we burned a #2 & #4 to get him.

    512065

I don't know. I'm not convinced about the Denney pick. He's been adequate at best in the Bills DE shuffle. The problem is the guy is already old and the Bills traded up just to get him. He just hasn't shown he is worth 2 players. In hindsight, the Bills could've stood pat and still drafted Alex Brown in the 4th round and have a more productive DE than Denney...

  12. There's a good possibility that the only player from this draft on next year's team is Coy Wire.

    512046

And only because he can play special teams...

    Pathetic.

How you give TD/TM a grade of B is totally incomprehensible to me. The 2002 draft was a complete train wreck, including the toxic mushroom clouds and explosions ripping into the future of the franchise.

Is there a grade lower than F? How about a 5/100 on this one? A thin nickel for the aforementioned special teams player. In some sense, Milloy is still band-aiding that pick, even though Lawyer runs like he has concrete in his cleats.

  13. Mike Williams didn't DOMINATE last year.  Mike Williams wasn't GREAT last year.  He was serviceable.  Dominators and great players are all pro's.  Mike Williams is never even considered in the same breath with all pro's OR guys being considered all pros.

And if Big Mike was so good this season after DOMINATING last season, why the hell would they switch his offensive line position this year?  He may be hurt, anyone can concede that, but there's no way an NFL team switches a DOMINATING, and GREAT offensive tackle to another spot on a line, so he can dominate and be great at a less demanding line spot.

Wake up.  After all the ass-sucking McNally worshippers, I can't imagine God McNally moving Big Mike to another spot because he's been so "dominating".

    511535

Donahoe said MW was moved because the younger guy was playing better at RT and they felt it was better to move MW. The mistake there wasn't playing Peters in his mind, it was rushing Fat Mike into the lineup at LG.

In other words, MW is not only not a dominant NFL RT, he's not even the best RT on the Bills right now. Not only that, but he doesn't know how to play on the inside and was so bad at it, the coaches decided to keep a guy they desperately want to get off the field on the field.

  14. Allow me to clarify My Position on Scouting, Drafting etc...It matters not that many, if not almost all others, were wrong in their evaluation. It matters only that the Bills were wrong, and others were right...I know it sounds harsh, unrealistic, whatever...But the fact is up to this point in time, they got it wrong. And furthermore had they done well with both 2nd Round Picks the fact that MW has underachieved up to this point would be much more acceptable...

BTW Thanks for the Links...Good reading it is... :(

    511168

Exactly. One evaluates a draft based on its results and NOT based on people's perceptions at/before it happens.

There's no revisionist history involved here. The 2002 draft was a monumental bust for the Buffalo Bills organization. That draft should've netted players that are making the current team a title contender. It simply didn't happen. Not one of those players even starts!

  15. Again, people mis the point of hte failure of the 2002 draft.  It wasn't the drafting of MW, who was a near concensus pick in that slot, but giving up a 4th round draft pick in a deep draft, when you are rebuilding a team, to jump ahead a few slots.  Take a look at that 4th round in 2002, and tell me you wouldn't want to have a shot of one of those guys in a Bills' uni?

    511962

I'd rather have Alex Brown than Ryan Denney. In a heartbeat.

  16. Realistically, there is no new-to-the-job GM that would ever bring in a cancer like TO.

Furthermore, TO is a receiver for cryin' out loud. Yes, he is a great receiver, but its not like finding a guy that can catch a few balls and move the chains is really all that hard. Guys like Terry Glenn, Peerless Price, Keenan McCardell, Koren Robinson, etc., etc. are on the street looking for work every year. Less upside maybe, but also much less downside.

Screw the big name players and high gloss press announcements. I've had enough of that. Bring in some players that can and want to play.
