1. I don't know. I mean, Tom is telling the truth. It's not like they have done nothing. They drafted Williams, signed Anderson, drafted Bannan, traded for Denney, signed a big name in Adams. They tried.

Too bad they have virtually nothing but continued decline to show for their efforts.

  2. 2001 was a pretty good draft. 4 solid players in Jennings, Henry, Schobel, and Clements. Too bad that this draft should be paying the Bills dividends now and half of those mentioned have moved on already.

2002 was a bust. That really hurts given the Bills draft order that year. Double ouch.

2003 gets a thumbs up at this point. McGahee, McGee are starters. Crowell has been playing decent. Kelsay is an OK backup, I guess.

2004 may be ok if Losman emerges.

It's too early, but 2005 looks like a 2002 repeat. We really chose a flying munchkin WR with our top pick? WTF for?

  3. I don't disagree that having a strong interior is required for having a good defense, but the problem yesterday was that the defense was completely unable to stop the passing game. They never put meaningful pressure on Brees and played 1/2-mile off the receivers all game.

They may have gameplanned to shutdown LT, and they did. But only because the Chargers could move the ball through the air with extraordinary ease. At the end of the game, the Chargers no-name 5th string back was gashing the Bills in the running game so badly, I was almost convinced the Bills only had 4 guys on the field.

  4. Coaching...Coaching....Why are the Bills Cowhers, Bill Bellicheks and John Foxes

plug in 7th rounders and UDFAs into their lines and still win......They are better

coaches and ahve a better coaching staff (that plays to the abilities of the players) than the GWs and MMs we have....Mike is aplayers coach....but when veterans

continue to make silly mental mistakes on the field.......the coaching staff takes the blame for that....

I think, they seek out and have 2nd-tier players that fit their systems better. They may lose the better athlete, but they can plug in someone that knows their role and executes the job.

Belichick is certainly a coach that is completely unafraid of sitting any player, no matter what his pedigree, that won't play within the system.

BTW, Gregg Williams was getting some press this year for benching Arrington in Washington. :D

  5. Yes. What I'm saying is that some of the guys upfront on this Bills team cannot block the guy in front of them. They shy away from contact, make the wrong line calls, or otherwise get bowled over and mauled. In short, they flat out suck.

Maybe the playcalling could be better. But, I have no idea. I was seeing our QB run for his life and the RBs juking guys in the backfield or hit during the exchange. Hell, I don't even know what the playcall was because untouched defenders were goosing our skills players before they could move. :D

BTW, this is the NFL. If a lineman can't pick up a blitzer more than once a season, then he has absolutely no business playing in this league. None.

  6. It doesn't matter what the fans think about the players that are drafted/brought in via free agency.  Tom Donahoe has to see the talent and work ethic in the players he brings in.  It's his job to bring in capable players, not players that the fans like or dislike.

Mike Williams is a bust, thats TD's fault.  Josh Reed is WR with stonehands, TD's fault.  Milloy is older and slower, TD has to know that when he signs him.

It's not the fan's job to evaluate the talent before it is brought in, it's TD's.  But it is the fan's job to voice displeasre when the talent that is brought in just plain sucks.  What makes everything much worse is the way this team just gives up!  It is terrible, Gregg Williams was fired because of lack of mental toughness in his teams, it hasn't gotten any better, maybe it's not the coaches, maybe it goes all the way to the person who evaluates and picks the players.  TD has to go, he is the reason this organization is a friggin' mess!

    508716

To be fair though, part of TD's job is to sell a product. Big name splashes help one sell tickets.

Still, it is better if the big name guys also bring some wins and playoff appearances along with the name.

  7. ben Rothlesberger...Dan Marino, etc...Though the odds are stacked way against it...it is possible when we all thought that Drews lack of mobility was the problem...

    509081

OK. There are of course exceptions. But what are the chances that the Bills would be the one to hit the Lotto here? Not very good, IMO.

  8. Here's my Socratic argument: What plays work when you have unblocked defenders flying through the A-gaps play after play after play?

Well, we know pocket pass plays are out. The QB is getting hit and evading people before he can take a proper drop. Screw keeping his eyes downfield, he's just trying to stay alive.

Running plays aren't going to work. The defender is "there" at the exchange. You're lucky to complete the hand-off without a fumble.

Quick passes and short drops don't work. It just means the defender has to take 1 less step before putting your QB in the hospital.

How about slow developing plays like triple reverses and end-arounds? Nope. They'll fail every time.

    Screens? Nope. Trick plays? Nope.

With ZERO blocking, there is no play calling "problem". The play calling just doesn't matter. This doesn't completely exonerate the coaches, scouts, and front office that assemble a team with no ability to block, of course.

It just doesn't matter how the tulips were planted on Friday if the dikes completely collapse on Sunday.

  9. Phooey. Is there really a better player on defense right now for the Bills?

    509061

The sad truth is, no. Clements is the best player on our defense with Takeo out.

I give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was pressing, trying to do too much, trying to make the spectular interception, rather than just taking care of business and doing his job.

I hope that was the case, or else I predict that NC will follow Thomas Smith and Ken Irvin to a second chance outpost someplace and then get bounced right out of the NFL in short order.

  10. Fat Mike does not deserve another chance. At this point, he should be a dominant LEFT tackle for this team. But he can't even get on the field because he's not as good as the garbage that is playing?

Let's not make bones about it. He's a complete bust. A total flop.

He was a risky pick at #4 in the first place. A huge, lard ass with "ballerina" feet that some numbskull thought could be moved to LT though there was zero evidence. They even compared him to his former mate and follow Texas lard ass bust, Leonard Davis.

Make no mistakes, the Cardinals and Bills were duped. Bigger is not better. Call it "bad luck" or whatever you want...

  11. Um, if you didn't hear the guy's name called, that's a good sign. Ideally, your DBs would give perfect coverage every play, forcing the QB to always throw the ball away. Then you'd never hear any of your DBs' names called.

If a DB makes a tackle on a pass play, it usually means the guy he was supposed to be covering just made a catch. So a DB with fewer tackles probably did a better job of not being picked on.

    508617

    Bingo. That's exactly my point.

  12. So, do you think there is an actual prescription for that or is it just dumb luck that you hit on your drafts and your free agents?  Or is it just the coaching and only a handful of guys know the secret?

    508563

Frankly, it appears to be systemic and not just the latest batch of coaches. Of course, Buffalo doesn't appear to be able to hire experience at the coaching position for whatever reasons, so it's hard to isolate the variables.

I think the Bills have one of the elite OL coaches. Perhaps his best years are in the rearview mirror, I don't know. But he at one time was widely considered to be the best OL coach around. But this line is simply an embarrassment. CV seems like a fairly solid LG, but the others just suck. At some point, one has to realize that the coaches don't play the games. They can draw up game plans, run drills, scream at players, etc. -- but if the player just throws it all out the window on Sunday afternoon and starts free lancing his craft, then the results are crippled QBs and RBs with crappy stat lines. You need a group of very smart, tough, strong, angry, mean bastards to work as an well-oiled instrument of destruction as an offensive line. Just because a guy is 6'10" and 400 lbs. and took ballet lessons in high school doesn't mean he's going to fit your system and fit in as part of the crew. Most of the Bills lineman have seemed to excel in the easy measurables - great benchpress and he weighs 380 lbs., sign him now! - but on the field this has translated into terrible units and sputtering offenses.

On defense, Donahoe has drafted a number of "high motor" DEs in past drafts. This would be fine except there is no true pass rushing threat on the roster. Bruce Smith will never be replaced, but there still are guys out there that can turn the corner in this league. It seems like the only effective pass rush the Bills have is a safety or corner blitz. That's just horrible. For so many reasons. I see a fair number of people blaming Jerry Gray for running all these blitzes - and at times it does seem ridiculous - but, this is also the NFL. If you sit back and give a QB over 10 seconds to stand in the pocket, he's going to methodically rip your defense a new one anyway. The only choice is whether to die slowly or quickly. :w00t:

  13. While the anger is understood, I think the talent is there.  And if it is there, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Brees had a phenom day.  Their game plan was dead nuts on.  Nate was victimized, but he is the symptom and not the cause in my opinion.

    508560

I wrote this in another post as well. NC had a horrible day in coverage. He was caught with his jock around his ankles play after play. On the whole though, he wasn't the worst thing out there. At least he actually fuggin tackled the ballcarrier. Indeed, at times, I thought he was the only guy on the Bills defense that had two functioning arms sticking out of his torso.

No corner is going to look good when a team *has* to blitz every single down to disrupt any offense even slightly. That, I understand fully. The thing I don't get is NC should know he is up a creek without a paddle and should not be guessing and flailing on every play. He should be able to shutdown Eric Parker for cripes sake.

  14. As posted in another thread -- the Bills are going nowhere until they, as an organization, figure out how to build an offensive and defensive line. As a hall of fame coach once said, "Football is a great sport. It rewards manhood." As another hall of famer put it, "It's simple: you have to be able to run and stop the run."

With sub-par crap in the trenches, the Bills are just another also-ran franchise.

  15. Shutdown corner? Yeah, right. Too Late Nate is a shutdown corner. That's why the Chargers picked on him all day, because they were afraid of his "skilz". My sainted grandmother is a better shutdown cornerback. NC played like this was his first NFL game today.

By the way, who the hell was playing the other CB position today? McGee went out lame after the first play of the game, but whatever reject replaced him hardly had to work all day. Oh wait, I think Greer broke up a pass play once. Maybe it was him. Of course, it's easier to just toss it to Eric "Hall of Famer" Parker on the other side because Too Late Nate's let him run free again and again.

  16. The problem with the Bills is the same as it has been for a loooooooooooong time now.

The Bills simply do not have the talent in the trenches, neither on offense nor on defense, to be a top-tier team. The Bills offensive line has been a sieve since the last couple years of Jim Kelly's career, but now it is an absolute disgrace. The defensive line, once anchored by the greatest DE that ever played, is now a wreck. (I like Schobel's hustle, but know that he would be a backup on many rosters in the NFL.)

In a nutshell: the Bills offensive line woes are that organizationally they place a higher value on bulk than brains. Look no further than them cutting an Ivy League guy that helped gel the line in favor of a fat tub of goo that can't block the sun on a pass play.

The Bills defensive line woes are that organizationally they place a higher value on "high motor" in their ends and blubber in their tackles. They don't seem to give a rat's ass if the player has any ability to get off blocks at all or get up the field and stay on his feet.

The Bills will never be a true contender until they fix the talent gaps in the trenches.

PS: JP Losman actually looked pretty good when he actually had time to take a drop, read the defense, and fire. Unfortunately for him, most of the game he had a defensive guy hitting him before or as he finished his drop. Unreal.

  17. Clements has played well before, but he really sucked today in coverage. His technique was horrible and the Chargers took him behind the woodshed and annihilated him.

On the other hand, he seemed to be the only guy on the Bills defense that could tackle. He must have been the only one not dipped in personal lubricant before the game. The defense looked like the 49ers out there, their tackling was horrific.

But, I can't be too hard on Late "Where'd he go?" Clements... the defensive front seven on this unit was totally invisible. They were lined up, then the ball would be snapped, and -- poof! -- the front seven vaporized into nothingness!
