  1. I want to laugh but don't want to insult. Was that a serious question? Because I doubt it to tell you the truth. He can't be that DUMB to think we should spend a top 3 pick on a position that we actually have some depth at.

You been a bills fan long? We been redefining dumb for over a decade.

Whoever we pick ins sure we will be "surprised that he was there" and will be "excited about his high motor"

I watch the bills draft for comedic purposes only.

  2. its much easier to do with that whole uncapped year -- look for them to be in cap hell in coming years, even with contracts geared towards hitting this year.

dont they have edwards AND holmes AND harris as three huuuuge UFA's this upcoming offseason? just thinking offhand.

Ya this is a great point. After spending on free agents they will be in cap trouble, then they might, uh fail to make the playoffs for a decade or something.

  3. Wouldn't get good value back for him, and he's an important piece in helping the young players develop. You don't want to all of a sudden thrust young players into new roles or have them carry too big a load. The presence of Evans allows gradual progress.

I agree, why take a chance when you've got a sure thing.

  4. Maybe someone here who know more about pro contracts can help determine if this is a realistic strategy.

    Could we:

    1. Threaten to release Maybin while he is unmarketable; and

    2. Offer in the alternative a renegotiated contract for a longer term (while he is "developing") and lower $$$?

Would this generate any real $ savings for us?

  5. I agree with your strategy except for one key element. We should do this with at least 2/3rds of said picks in EVERY DRAFT. Thats what all the good teams do.

I think our draft strategy should be to just draft whoever the experts think we should draft.

We haven't tried that one in a while. And given our current results, its worth a shot.

  6. I don't think number of carries necessarily equates to the quality of the back, do they? Especially in this situation? "Developing" is something that every NFL player does, and the way Gailey is doing it is fine. Sorry it's not to your taste, but your stats kind of prove nothing.

It proves nothing, it does however, show that other good backs have been "developed" when they came out of college.

According to your analysis, Spiller was not.

Which begs the question of why we drafted him at #9 if he wasn't developed?

    Upside? See, Maybin.

We need to stop it with the upside and draft a guy who can start.

  7. Spiller obviously has those instincts... he can, and likely will, learn to trust them more. That's a normal problem for rookie runningbacks to have, and why so many people in this thread and elsewhere are in such a hurry to label him as either a bust or luxury pick or whatever nonsense is simply beyond reason.

He's a dynamic offensive talent and his contribution to this team will grow as his experience increases. The fact that Gailey is developing him deliberately rather than hurriedly is an indictment of nothing more than solid coaching.

Even though I admittedly posted these stats elsewhere, I have to repost it here to point out the absurdity of the "deliberate" portion of your comment. Given the choice, I'd rather have a RB who was good, than "developing".

    Just the facts:

Name. Rushing att. (1st 5 games)

    Thurman Thomas. 77

    Barry Sanders. 67

    Willis McGahee. 61

    Adrian Peterson. 96

    Chris Johnson. 85

    Group Average 77.2

    C.J. Spiller. 19

Raw carries below average = 58.2

Percent carries below average = 75.3%

  8. Here are some interesting stats comparing C.J. Spillers rushing attempts in his first five (5) games against other backs of interest.

Name. Rushing att. (1st 5 games)

    Thurman Thomas. 77

    Barry Sanders. 67

    Willis McGahee. 61

    Adrian Peterson. 96

    Chris Johnson. 85

    Group Average 77.2

    C.J. Spiller. 19

Raw carries below average = 58.2

Percent carries below average = 75.3%

  9. Okay...gotta stop reducing him to a simple kick returner. He had 606 carries and 123 receptions while at Clemson. He's one of only a handful of players in the ACC to ever rush for 3000 yards and 1000 yards receiving.

    Sorry,

5 games, 19 rushing attempts = ~4 Rushing attempts per game = KICK RETURNER.

    Nice pick Nix.

  10. How bout no.....Scott

You were saying we should have taken Trent Williams instead of spiller. You can lie all you want, I hope it makes you feel better, cuz we're not buying it. Read up before you start a thread please.

Actually, what I was saying ... is that we got SCREWED in the draft. We got a KICK RETURNER.

What part of KICK RETURNER do people not understand?

Our First overall pick, on a team with no less than 7 GLARING positional holes on its roster, was a KICK RETURNER.

Is it lonely being the only person on the planet stubborn enough to defend the Bills' front office?

  11. I think you're missing the point the OP is trying to make. That is the Bills should have drafted ANY offensive tackle at number nine. No matter WHO that tackle was, he would have been better than Spiller. Never mind that Spiller was the BPA at nine and it wasn't even close.

It's just history repeating itself. The Bills drafted a kick returner out of USC once and he SUCKED his rookie year. Wasn't that good the next few years, either. You'd think the Bills would have learned their lesson:

Pick the best OT available, regardless.

Based on what Bulaga is doing in Green Bay, it's obvious the Bills should have taken him at that spot. I'm pretty sure he was the highest rated OT available. Damn! Can't believe we passed on a guy like that.

It's so easy when you break it down scientifically.

    GO BILLS!!!

    Thanks.

My original post was not fully explained. I'm definitely not saying we should have taken ANY Tackle available, I'm just saying there were a lot of need positions we had to fill and we picked a kick returner.

I've never seen a team take a Kick returner with their 1st round pick.

Then again, I've never seen a team take a 3 year project pass rushing end with their 1st pick either.

My point, however subtle, was that our front office is a bad joke.

Now, if we had done something incredibly stupid, like say for instance, holding a THIRD running back on our roster, while letting another promising RB (J.Bell) go, so that we could get the same value and just lose the promising back...

why then... I'd have to say the difference between genius and stupidity...

is that genius has its limits.

  12. If/when Mr. Wilson passes, if Jimbo's mysterious group of owners swoop in and save of our team, is there any chance Jimbo reaches out to Bill Polian to return?

Could he go to Bill and say "Bill... your beef was with Mr. Wilson... I ain't got no beef with you, and the proud people of this great city ain't got no beef with you. Come back and lets finish what we started 25 years ago..."

Chris Polian would be well entrenched as the Colts GM at this point and maybe Bill gets the competitive itch to get back in the trenches. And what a way to put the icing on the cake of his legacy... to bring the Buffalo Bills to their 5th Super Bowl and... WIN

What say you? Would you support such a move?

I'd support just about anything that brings Polian back. God I miss the playoffs.

  13. Starting Trent is the no-lose choice.

If he's good, you look like a genius for starting him.

If he sucks, you have a chance to sell Brohm as a winner who will take over.

I gotta say Brohm looks like the snappier QB.

He has quicker feet and a quicker release, looks pretty accurate.

He could come in after Trent has a ****ty game, or a concussion.

  14. I'm just curious about the make up of some of the people on here. Is it in your genes that some of you are so pessimistic of the Bills? Is it so deeply ingrained in your souls that the outlook is so bad?

I know that most of us here have an optimistic outlook of the Bills, no matter how bleak things have looked for a while. The majority of us have read up and studied our team and know things haven't worked out the best for years. But we realize things can go better. How can things go worse?

We've upgraded our D and we have a man in charge who is known for making the most of an O. If we had upgraded our O in the draft instead of the D, I bet some of you would still find something to complain about.

Seriously though, I'm just curious, have some of you been so pessimistic all your life?

I'm not saying at all that you shouldn't post. I actually like reading your points of views at times because it's good to see different aspects and views of the game. But really, pessimism can go too far.

I'de much rather read optimistic posts from people who do their research (like a lot of people here do).

    Thoughts?

I am not a pessimistic or optimistic person, I'm objective.

I strip away personal feelings and passions and just look at facts.

Based on those facts, I predict, this year, like the past 10 years, will not be good.

We did not have the personnel to compete last year, and we really haven't done anything that will change that (for this season anyway).

That, and we are in arguably the toughest division in football.

I got a little passionate and excited when we brought Marv back and went optimist for a season.

    Forgive me.
