  1. Buddy must be getting extra points on his american express card for hosting barnett. I don't understand buddy saying "we're bigger" and then going after a small linebacker. from my perpective, in a 3-4 defense in a northern climate, if you don't weigh in at 245 or more, why bother?

    kind of arbitrary...

    Darryl Talley 6-4 235

    cornelis bennet 6-2 237

    shane conlan 6-3 235

    takeo spikes 6-2 240

    ok i'll stop there...

If the Bills sign Barnett and Crowder, can we put away our pitchforks or do we need Ryan Harris too?

no. we need spiderman back from retirement. and andrew luck. and bill cowher with gailey as OC and Wannie as DC. and then bring Lebeau back. also make sure we have Bill Polian back running the show as well. And finally Pegula needs to spend 1.5bil on the Sabres and 1.5 bil on the Bills, and just live off whatever Natural gas reserves he has left. then... and i think only then, will this board's idiots go silent. in the mean time, ill keep laughing :)

  2. I like Nix, I like Gailey... but this is complete Horse crap, even if it is a numbers game. you do NOT move your most talented young pass rusher back inside!!! (unless you are convinced he cannot cover)

    http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2011/07/30/moats-batten-update/

I'd much rather see batten inside at first to see what he can do, vs Moats, who we know can pressure a QB. I realize we need more ILB (white, shep, an no one else) - but Coleman and Moats were both Pass Rushers in college. I don't get why we aren't keeping them outside. You want to make a LB move inside??? Make Maybin. Guy can't play OLB anyways. He's taken up spot form Moats and from Coleman...

  3. To start this off.... Don't be surprised one bit that Sheppard hasn't signed. You think his agent isn't aware of the Bills' crisis at ILB and that his clietn's value is jjjust a little bit higher? He is in a position of strength and will bargain for an extra year or more guaranteed $$$. Sounds crazy for a 3rd rounder, but this is how agent's think. Now onto my points.

There are a lot of ILB out there, and a lot of good ones. As nix said, there are more waiver wire cut's coming. We all know Poz isn't worth his contract. Leadership and tackling is great, but when you can't cover a RB or a TE as a LB, that severely limits your skill set and ability to play within certain defensive schemes. Here are my top ILB still out there:

Barrett Ruud (Scouts inc 75), 28yo tackling machine for TB

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=8450

Steven Tulloch (Scouts inc 79) 29yo played MLB for Titans, would have to adjust to 3-4

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=9702

steven cooper (Scouts in 75) 31yo solid started at ILB for SD, was drafted with Nix there

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=4877

jamel mcclain (scouts inc 69) 26yo, became a solid starter for Ravens last year - I think I like him because he's jacked, physical and comes from a nasty defense.

    http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5031/jameel-mcclain

McClain is actually who I want more than anyone. He is young, he is big, he is nasty, and he comes from a winning team. This is the kind of guy I want - modestly priced, huge upside. Cooper is a solid vet addition as are the others, but I really hope that Nix takes a look at McClain. One negative - he is hte guy who laid that illeale hit on Heath Miller last year.

  4. buddy's words per BB.com

“The three young guys (we’ve got) are our two drafted guys, Chris White, (Kelvin) Sheppard and we’re working Moats in there right now,” said Nix. ”I wouldn’t want to take snaps away from them. I think they progress along with our team. We’re pretty young anyway and we’ll kind of move forward. We know they have the ability it’s just a matter of getting them up to speed.”

Moats began his rookie year at inside linebacker in the spring workouts before moving outside come training camp where he had a decent rookie season. Now Moats is back inside and Nix indicated that wouldn’t be changing unless he really struggled.

“We’ll give him some work in there and see how he’s doing,” Nix said. ”If we were to move him, it’d probably be to move him permanently to the outside.”

Obviously this is a numbers game. They want their best players on the fieldan d with Merriman/Kelsay set at OLB, they think Moats can probably unseat Torbor inside. If he can't, he goes back to riding hte pine until Merriman gets hurt again on the outside. In addition, I dont get what Batten isn't working at ILB. I'd rather see him there and Coleman/Moats at OLB.

  5. Didn't he play 5-tech. in ALA 34 with Nick Saban? Looks like Dukes and Sapp forgot that.

yes. he played the 5 tech. i dont know what these guys were thinking. also, not sure why they think the bills will mis use him. the bills really mis-used kyle williams though undersized right?

bashing-the-bills might be good for ratings, but who knows.

  6. It's not in sports, although his first story was on Spencer........Both Sully and Donn Esmonde are considering taking buyouts. Tim seems like he's going to be more like Donn Esmonde, maybe he'll eventually do his column, but for now he wants to do big expose type stories.

I'm not the biggest Esmonde fan. He tends to write consistently opinionated stuff (which is what he is paid to do), but rarely takes the approach of looking at things from both side. I agree with him a lot, esp on the waterfront development, but the minute you don't agree with his social issue stances he considers you a bigot. Sully is great for the masses, but he seems like a better fit covering Boston than Buffalo sports. I think he'd do wonders covering the red sox.

TG can relate with a lot of us. Has lived as a young adult in the area, understand the people, their passion, their inferiority complex (which I can't stand buffalonians have!), etc. He'll be good for the region as a writer. Plus, he might be a fun guy to bump into out at Coles, if he ever makes it to the city.

  7. Colts drafted 2 OTs this year for a reason. Trueblood lets DEs walk to the QB. Harris is a zone blocking RT who in 4 yrs has played all 16 games once.

agreed on the Colts aspect. Trueblood has been an excellent run blocker, Harris replaced Pears and they haven't run zone blocking schemes since Shanahan left, completely different offense with Josh McDaniels. I keep forgetting - we have two OT/OG hybrids who played RT (Wrotto, Howard) and Pears who was replaced by Harris. So I'm failing to see the lack of upgrade here.

  8. all 3 of those guys are below avg. and are small upgrades over what we have now.

according to scouts inc all are significant upgrades over what we have and all are young with a lot of upside (though harris has had some injury issues). none are like Clabo in terms of size and mean streak though. i like trueblood alot, but oh well.

  9. not sure if these guys have signed but I think they'd fit well here, starting with Trueblood:

    jeremy trueblood, RT, TB

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=9645

    ryan harris, RT, DEN

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=10514

    charlie johnson, RT, IND

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=9785

All are relatively young, and are not graded too far off from Clabo according to Scouts inc (clabo was a 79, trueblood 73, harris 77, johnson 74).

everyone who is freaking out just chill and enjoy the fact the bills are making plays for good people. Get over your 'buffalo complex.' Brad Smith just left NYC for Buffalo. Poz left for a state where he will save 600k a year on income tax ALONE (90% of this group would do that). Drayton Florenec spurned NYC for Buffalo. it has nothing to do with the city and nothing to do with our "meddling owner" Ralph who is so meddling the he is at all the bills press conferences and sits in on every decision. Oh wait, thats Peugla (who I love and who is an owner that is involved. RW is watching tv in grosse pointe, MI).

Nix/Gailey/Whaley are our biggest assets in signing FAs. What we can't overcome is being in a hard division and out of hte playoffs for 11 years. WE are the Baltimore Orioles/Toronto Bluejays of the AFC East.

  10. while it's clear that ATL is going to re-sign him, this is why it pays to have guys like Buddy and Chan. they are southern boys. They can speak this kids language, literally. Buddy is from Chattanooga, just down the road from Knoxville where Clabo is from. Chan coached in Georgia. Don't think that doesn't matter. It speaks volumes compared to the Yale grad (jauron) trying to sign guys.

They made a good effort. I'd also go as far as to say with Buddy here, we might have actually kept peters. I'm just saying...

  11. Listen, lets use some common sense. If the Pittsburgh Pirates, a place where absolutely NO free agent goes, can compete for the division and have a winning record, there is no reason the Bills can't.... I'm just saying. Poz is a ILB who cant cover and Florence is a CB who was flagged constantly for PI (esp in the red zone) last year. Now, if we can't re-sign steve johnson, kyle williams, etc. then yes, I will start to freak out.

Thats right, we can't have anyone freaking out, out there! We've come too far!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgRp-CZ1UDc

  12. Wouldn't it be funny if the Jets are driving up the price for Florence with Buffalo in a seemingly desperate mode at CB? Kinda like Edmonton signing Vanek to the offer sheet 4 years ago after the Sabres lost Drury and Briere.

agreed except Edmonton wasn't a division opponent. That said, after hearing how they effed the Kings in the A, it sounds like their GM is just a jerk.

  13. Not sure its overreaction. We've gotten worse today. When the 4th worst team gets even worse, its not a good start. Obviously the season doesn't start today, but there's been enough rumblings that we're not interested in going out and getting new impact players that anybody should be troubled by losing those players we've targeted to keep.

And what's the fun of being cool and level-headed through another 4-12 campaign?

You're right... With Poz gone, who do we have left that can cover a TE or a RB in the flat? oh thats right. Every tight end that he covered smoked him not to mention the multiple times he's been dragged by RBs 4-5 yards down field. I like Poz, he's a golid #2 ILB. But he is not a game changer. For 6mil/year or whatever he gets, keep drafting players for a 3-4. Any of the cut ILBs from SD will be sufficient for a year or two until Sheppard, Batten, etc develop.

We didn't get worse, we're still unable to cover tight ends and running backs. From what I gather, we are in the same position as when we started.

  14. I dont know what he'll do on the field, but I really like this kid as a person. well spoken, humble, happy, sincere - shoot, I'd love to see him and Poz do some trap shooting together. i'd pay to shoot along side them. The best is he thinks in buffalo he'll be a city slicker. Wait until he gets his first chance to catch a large mouth bass off erie basin at the pumphouse or shoots his first whitetail in the southern tier. Gotta love it.

  15. This is from a recent ESPN Article:

Let's start with Eric Weddle, one of the best safeties in football. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith all but punted him out the door by signing Bob Sanders just before the lockout officially took effect. All three of San Diego's inside linebackers that started a game last year -- Stephen Cooper, Brandon Siler and Kevin Burnett -- will hit free agency. That leaves the top two inside linebackers on San Diego's depth chart as 2010 third-rounder Donald Butler, who missed all of last year with a torn Achilles tendon, and this year's second-round pick Jonas Mouton. Starting defensive end Jacques Cesaire, who the Chargers are counting on first-rounder Corey Liuget to replace, and safety Paul Oliver, who started eight games, are also free to find new homes. To lay it out simply: Thirteen Chargers defenders started more than five games last season, but only seven of them are under contract for next season.

But wait, there's more! How about the fact that wide receivers Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee are also free agents? Should Vincent Jackson not be granted free agency in a settlement, then hold out on signing his franchise tag again, the Chargers will be in a desperate situation at wideout. If a scenario like that unfolded, and the Chargers signed nobody to help out by the season opener, their three best receivers would be Cowboys castoff Patrick Crayton, rookie second-rounder Vincent Brown and Seyi "My entire career is built on torching Kareem Jackson" Ajirotutu. Right tackle Jeromey Clary will also have the opportunity to test the market, and there will be quite a few teams looking for an upgrade at that spot in free agency.

The Chargers will have some money to play around with, and Smith has always been very savvy at building a young talent base, but they clearly will have a lot of work to do this offseason.

I'm curious with Merriman touting earlier he was recruting guys to come here and the obvious Buddy factor, if we might pick up one of their ILB and let Poz go while focusing on keeping Drayton. I don't think we need more saftey help necessary, but perhaps Weddle would be a nice addition assuming whitner is let go? just some thoughts.

  16. The NHL is small potatoes compared to the NFL. And unlike football players, hockey players (who play on ice) don't really care too much where they play.

As for the Sabres specifically, they did extremely well under Golisano, who was basically a caretaker owner who didn't spend a lot on the team. And in the NHL, 16 out of 30 teams make the playoffs, meaning it's harder to miss them than make them. So while it's great that Pegs is spending money, it means little unless the Sabres win championships. Hopefully they do that, and if they do, we can revisit this again.

BINGO! problem isn't ralph. Hockey playesr are simple guys, out of the lime light. NFL players are show boats. they love the clubs and night life. big difference. hocky players stay in buffalo and raise a family. not a ton of NFLers do

  17. Bottom line, born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I am not judging, just saying.

    1.) you are judging

2.) he was born into a wealthy family and didn't lie there and become a trust fund playboy baby living it up in NYC - he took his family's wealth and grew it considerably. The man is a heck of a businessman and an owner who actually understands finances and the bottom line.

3.) all this said - he doesn't have near the same outside revenue as a Kraft, Allen, Jones, Black, etc. He is a loyal owner, both to his employees and his team. You won't find an employee bad mouth him. The issues with Butler/Polian and RW, weren't ralph at all, but rather Littman. His biggest blunder, perhaps, is letting Littman have too much reign, however, he may be responsible for being the reason the Bills are still in town and financially viable at the same time.

  18. it would not surprise me that it may be ralph. despite all the kudos he gets for keeping the team in buffalo, his tightness is legendary, he is greedy, plain and simple. cue the all the ralph defenders and how we are a small market, etc, etc, etc,..and he is watching out for us.. yada yada .. please..

naw - i'll just cue the "you're an idiot" and leave it at that. ralph has millions because he is business smart. you and I do not have millions because we are not business smart on the same level.
