  1. For all the draft misses he has had I have to give the guy credit for something: Undrafted free agents. He has a knack for finding these under the radar guys that become impact players.

its apparent that jauron probably had more control/influences on our draft misses then modrak. modrak/whaley/nix seem to understand football skills and talent while jauron seemed more interested in his kind of players (ie undersized DEs like Maybin).

  2. I was just about to post this. NO one has mentioned both wins were against 4-3s... we all should have been quick to notice - trent owns the 4-3. Yet- we got pummeled by a team that is brand new to a 3-4. this doesn't bod well. We can just hope that he has learned to read it as effectively by practicing against it daily. i'm not sure he has, but our division record will be a good indication. He at least played admirably in the opener to NE last year, here's hoping he can again.

all in all, though, he is a smart QB, and i'd think practicing daily against it (however bad ours is) will be enough to get him thinking/reading/reacting better to it.

ps feels good to contribute after a 3 month deployment. Go bills from Okinawa!!!

  3. Has anyone else noticed Chan's mic'd up where he's talking to another coach on the sidelines about wood..."Did you watch film this morning? ( I did) ...that Eric Woods an athlete gaaa he makes us better (snap of the finger) like that."

Really excited to see how he comes back off this injury, I expect nothing but revenge on everyone he faces.

I noticed the exact same thing. I actually thought it was Nix he was talking to. But if wood is healthy, this line is a LOT better hten we are getting cred for. Heck, if Greene can be an average RT this line is already in better shape than last year.

  4. Gosh, good eye. I've had my eye on Troy Smith for a while as well. I'm biased tho cause I like the Buckeyes. If Troy could be had for something minimal and Chan thinks he can mold him into something worthwhile then, perhaps, just maybe, possibly... I think Chan has thought about it, but he hasn't pulled the trigger to make it happen so i doubt it will. I would certainly be intrigued if Troy came to us though. But if Chan overpaid i would be a bit upset. Troy still has promise.

id love to have him on this roster...

  5. People need to get some more realistic expectations about Troup, a college "1" technique in the 4-3 defense who is about 318 pounds and was not in a Big 6-conference weights and conditioning program.

Let's just hope we see enough out of him in 2010 to have a reasonable basis for believing he can play at the NFL level.

you are one of the lesser posters on this board... just needed to say that mr. northern.

troupe slimmed down for starters, so he has the frame to add weight. he played at an solid non big 6 program, not unlike many other excellent defensive players - see demarcus ware, osi umenyoria, etc, so thats not a huge issue. also a 1 tech can often be double teamed in a 4-3 and many times lines over center or off a center's shoulder, which will happen with regularity in our 3-4 over system....

just needed to get that out

  6. I've had numerous conversations with people in the organization about the draft process.

So either you are actually Gabe northern, in which case I certainly don't doubt you having connections with some scouts still connected with the Bills, or you are some new poster who was a big fan of gabe northern's who supposedly has inside contacts within the organization and how it works?

The whole "modrak wanted cushing" thing came about from 1 buffalonews article. can we even verify that is correct beyond gaughn and wilson? In addition - is this the same tom Modrak who is responsible for finding Byrd in the 2nd round and trading back in for Levitre? Or does that credit go to Modrak? or to Jauron?

the point and bottom line is - unless you are actually in that war room, or unless you know a Scount who sees the process going on, I'd question how in the world a poster happens to know such things...

but if you are Gabe Northern, then disregard all this and your source is probably legit. sorry can't help but question all the people with "sources deeeeep within" on this board.

  7. Perhaps Buddy let the teams that drafted OT in the first round take themselves out of the running for Gaither, lessening the competition for his services...

excellent point. that is a benefit to having had those teams all pick up and spend big money on LTs (unproven rookies at that) . If he could land Gaither at 6-7mil per for 4 years, that be cheaper and better then getting and unproven commodity in the draft, though we'd likely be giving up a 3rd as well....

  8. I hope they put more Bills games on here this year in Bangkok. The Jests were the only team I got to see not on the net last year.

i feel the same way in okinawa. are you right in bangkok? i'll be out there this fall i believe around columbus weekend.

  9. I heard today from a former NFL quarterback that the Seahawks wanted to trade for Marshawn Lynch and our 1st round draft pick but Bills "Nixed" it. Not sure what they offerred, but the way to "Build through the draft" is to stockpile picks.

IMO, if the Bills had kept trading down we could have had Claussen, Cody or Williams at NT, as well as a LT instead of Spiller and Troup.

I think that most people would have graded that draft an A versus the C that most gave the Bills.

wow. nice insight. please never post regarding this again.

  10. this is the news I wanted to hear. I was waiting to see when Buddy would start shaping up the scouting department. I love the Moody hire. it's also good we are expanding the FO. He's got a good head on his shoulders and have a feeling he might steal one ore two more from AJ. He's a good ol southern boy with some charisma and charm - the kind of guy that you want to work from (at least from the press conferences)....

  11. 8-time probowler, proven guy at a position we desperately need. Does this make sense to anyone else?

we desperately need centers? last I saw we have two starting centers on our O-line. but maybe I missed something.

plus, ya, he's 40 and we all know pro-bowl means nothing but popularity for the o-line, just ask good 'ol ruben brown....

  12.

your point is interesting. I'mg oing to look through the HOFers and see how many went to "smaller" schools... i have a feeling you are on the wrong side of this argument.

a quick scan of HOF members - 94 of 253 went to schools other then BCS (granted i did not see who was an owner, coach, but it should even out i'd think)...

  13. Jerry Rice, Andre Reed, Phil Hansen and others I am sure have come from the 'other' schools and have been pretty darn good, but it seems to be more exception than rule.

I am not saying the guys from the smaller schools aren't as good because they may have more heart and focus but the degree to which they will have to step up to the competitive level in professional football will be greater than the players from the larger conferences.

  14. ive got a contact who works with schefter directly. I am going to contact him and see if he can find out from Schefter why exactly he'd say that. it only makes sense if we are competing against a playoff team for his services - otherwise its retire or play one more year.

  15. Excellent post. I happen to agree with pretty much everything you said. I believe it is going to take two or three years to rebuild this team the right way, but then, we will be contending again. Nix and Gailey really seem to know what they are doing, and we have a lot of promising young guys in the FO, like Doug Whaley, who can take the reins when Nix retires in five or six years.

5 or 6 years? im going the under on that.. 3-4...

does anyone know if we have hired any new scouts???

  16. I know a lot of people aren't crazy about our draft but I think have some solid new players. No, we didn't find a franchise tackle or a franchise qb, and I know that's what the fans want...the sexy picks. But this is what we did do:

We got the most electrifying, exciting player in the draft

We added depth to our offensive line

We improved our run defense with a couple of big guys up front

We added some OLB depth with guys that may push for playing time

This has too many holes to fill in one draft. Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm just excited we have some solid football minds that have a vision for once and they are going to stick to their vision. They are drafting high character, high work ethic players who are going to bring maximum effort on every snap. Those are the type of guys you need to build a long term successful franchise.

Kudos to the first Buddy Nix draft...hopefully the first of many successful drafts to come!

agreed... and is no oone excited for levi brown? had heard we were high on him. i really like that pick.

  17. So who exactly is playing left tackle for the bills this year? hint: the answer is not D Bell.

I didn't mention LT, what made you bring that up? with 3 picks Nix has gotten us 3 needs. If you do not consider RB a need, then you are also delusional and under the impression marshawn wants to be here and wants to work hard. In addition - it very well may be D. Bell. By no means am I excited for this. I'm on record on this blog as saying I do not think he will pan out as a LT. however - if our defense can improve from last year, esp against the run, then our team will be in more games in the 4th quarter then it has been of late. also - it is very clear that nix puts his money where his mouth is.

to sum it all up, Buddy's first 3 picks have focused on running and stopping the run. name the last bills GM to do that please....
