  1. Jauron is officially the very worst coach I have ever seen. He makes Herm Edwards and Rich Kotite look better than Lombardi.

Btw thanks Marv, for bestowing this loser upon us.

I believe you are correct. Even worse than the non-descript set of coaches from the mid-80's 2-14, 4-12 era.

The real comedy of this is the Bills acted with such urgency to sign Dick to an extension last year. After all, he is such a hot item in the coaching profession that I'm sure there must have been a dozen other teams waiting to sign him if the Bills failed to come forward with an extension! Like Henny Youngman used to say 'take my coach, please'!!

  2. Converting Bryan Scott to LB may seem completely stupid to any informed fan. But when you play 'dick ball' it makes perfect sense. Now the rationale for drafting all those DB's is clear.

    So what would you do?

    Scott 6-1 219

    Harris 6-2 232

    Maybin 6-4 250

What's the over/under on how many plays it will be before Scott gets injured from having to constantly take on blocks from 300+ lb offensive lineman?

  3. I saw the ads for the 2012 movie and was speaking to a buddy of mine, a fellow Bills fan. The basic premise is the world comes to an end on December 21st, 2012.

So we're talking about it, and he says 'The plot is missing a key ingredient. Yeah, the world comes to an end in 2012. Right after the Bills clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs and are the clear favorite to win the Super Bowl!'

Hadn't laughed that much in a while.

  4. I loved the Collinsworth reaction: "Really"? And I love all the donks like Mike&Mike accusing people of "hindsight" when they're the very people who act like the 52yd FG was money in the bank - Akers has not been good from that distance the last few years and I doubt the likelyhood of converting the 4th down was much less.

I thought the QB sneak was worth a challenge even though spots are rarely overturned. But video evidence doesn't mean much when Walt Coleman is involved.

The FG would have made sense if they needed two scores and having no timeouts didn't appear to enter the thought process. Andy played it a different way and screwed up. He put faith in the defense to get the ball back and they didn't deliver. Give the 'Boys kudo's for staying aggressive and getting the first downs to get the game to knee-down mode.

  5. You're correct that RW is that common denominator to all of this decade of disappointment and even a casual observer should know this. Beginning with Phillips firing, Butler/Smith leaving, Donahoe, and through to Levy/Brandon, RW's decision making has become even more suspect as he's aged. To think he thought TO would erase DJ's faulty game planning is sheer lunacy.

Still, when he had a chance to start over, he chose to elevate Brandon, re-sign DJ, and then keep the HC when he finished 2-8. I won't believe this team is in it to win it until they find football people to make football decisions. If Dungy is right and the Bills are looking at Vick, they're not trying to win anymore but find gimmicks to sell tickets.

All true. The real problem here is the only person capable of doing anything about 'the decade of disappointment' either does not see the problem/solution or refuses to take action.

  6. Well, I just got an email from the Group Sales dept today. They were announcing that plenty of tickets were still available for the New England and Indy games...as if that's a big surprise.

I'm contemplating a response saying something to the effect of "If Dick Jauron is fired by then, I'll consider it. Otherwise, you're going to have a lot of empty seats."

Anyone else have ideas for a good reply?

Tell them to donate the tickets to the county prosecutors office. This should drop the crime rate when those inclined to break the law find out that instead of going to jail they will be forced to attend a Bills game at season's end. But it probably should be cleared with the Supreme Court to see if it violates the doctrine of 'cruel and unusual punishment'.

  7. You are right...I used to get angry, which I guess reflects I still cared about the team. At this point, I still follow, but I feel no excitement for them any longer. I enjoy good football and find myself watching other games for the sheer competition of it. It took me about 5 years to get here, but now that I am hear, I wonder if I ever will return to really caring about them as a team... Sad part is - if they leave WNY, it would be sad, but I can assure, I would only wacth or read about them as a curiosity, not as my team.

Writing this season off, I've taken to looking at draft position for 2010. The Bills currently sit in the 10th spot. This means there are 9 other teams that are worse from a win-loss perspective. After watching the Bills pathetic offense and valiant but over-matched and tired and spent defense I have to say that's amazing. There's just a lot of bad football in the NFL this year.

I enjoy watching good NFL football too but with the exception of a handful of teams the NFL product in 2009 is not entertaining. There might be 5 or 6 great/good teams this season. The rest either suck or aren't worth the time to watch. Tonight's Saints/Falcons game might a good one but IMO there wasn't one decent game yesterday.

Focusing on the Bills, the mid-80's were just as bad or worse, but I cannot remember ever being this disinterested. I think the discouragement is the result of a couple things: 1) the widespread availablity of information via the net, e-mail, blogs, etc., and numerous media outlets that didn't exist back then, 2) the likely root cause to the problem, bad coaching, poor drafting, substandard front office, is fairly obvious to most observers. Yet the one guy with the power to turn things around either doesn't see it or doesn't care to act.

  8. Julius Peppers is not doing so well, according to a report out of Carolina.

I see he has 5 sacks this season, but 2 came against the Redskins and 2 against the Bucs.

Could Cowher end up in Carolina?

Carolina coach John Fox has told friends and some associates he expects to be fired once the season ends. It's not that Foxy is doing a bad coaching job; it's just that the Panthers are 0-3, and they don't appear capable of catching New Orleans and Atlanta in the South. But he's being blamed for sticking with Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers, two high-priced stars, who aren't producing right now. If Bill Cowher is going to leave CBS, it would make sense that his former Pittsburgh boss, Dan Rooney, would try to persuade him to go to Carolina.

    per FOX Sports

I'm expecting the Bills offense to show some improvement this week but the biggest worry is going to be the Panther's running game on offense. With the yardage the Bills have been yielding and Carolina's own QB problems I expect them to give the Bills 'D' a steady diet of runs. They did it last week against the Buc's on their final drive. If it works, why not stick to it?

With their current lack of size and skill at LB and the dismissal of any 'out of the box' thinking from Jauron and staff, (like moving Maybin to LB for the next couple weeks to get a big, fast, athletic, and healthy body on the field vs. riding the bench), I see a long day for the 'D' unless the 'O' can help out with a little ball control. Then maybe the Bills can squeeze out another ugly win.

  9. I think the point of this really is that a city (Los Angeles) had a team of their own (the Rams) for nearly 50 years. This team was taken from them, logo and colors and all, and people were bitter. From what I know, the Rams have never really been accepted by the fans in St. Louis. They had a great team initially with Warner, Bruce, and Faulk, but haven't done much since. St. Louis is a baseball city, and always will be. The Rams seem like the most logical choice to make the move to LA.

The Rams moving back to L.A. aside, I find it ironic that the L.A. fanbase (if there is such a thing) which feels bitter about their team being taken away feels justified, and would not hesitate, to give the same screw-job to another fanbase given the opportunity, be it Bills, Jags, Vikings fans, or some other team.

Guess its true: 'where you stand depends on where you sit'.

  10. Do that once and he'd be in the hospital after getting hit by all 4 pass rushers at the same time.

But seriously, why doesn't AVP give him a play with no 'check down' option? Why not send both TO and Lee deep and tell him "as soon as the deep saftey starts toward one of them, throw it to the other". Gotta get the guy in the habit of throwing the ball more than 5 yards.

The first thing they need to do is get rid of the no huddle. The only people getting fooled is the offensive line because they don't appear to know the snap count on half the plays.

    Watch what Miami did, learn.

Try and run the wildcat with Lynch and Jackson against the Jets. They won't be prepared for it since the Bills never do anything creative so who'd expect it?

Give Edwards a rest. Fitz might not be the answer but its obvious Edwards is regressing every week. He needs to sit. And if it hurts his confidence he needs his mommy to tell him its time to grow a pair. Show some maturity, and man-up.

Since you are not allowed to score less than zero the offense might hit bottom this coming Sunday.

Its been stated many times before, but move Maybin to LB, even if its for blitz packages on 3rd down. For one, we don't have many left, and second, get the guy on the field because he's not contributing riding the bench, and last he's done nothing at DE. Its rumored that he's been on the field this year.

Unfortunately, I expect none of the above to happen because why take chances, you might lose......

  11. Firing Dick now would mean nothing for the 2009 season. This season is lost, write it off. Realistically we're looking at a top 5-6 draft choice and something like a 3-13 record. Other than satisfying the emotional reaction to fire the coach this team is going nowhere as long as the current front office remains in place. Maybe a great coach could coax a handful of victories out of this bunch but without better front office management a championship run remains nothing more than wishful thinking.

The good thing is that after a decade of mediocrity we're finally going to hit rock-bottom. Nowhere to go but up!

Ralph said something last year about this team not having the talent to win. He was talking about talent on the field. While he was correct his focus was misplaced or too narrow. More importantly, better talent is needed in the front office in order to correctly evaluate and pursue players to perform on the field, and WIN, on Sunday's.

Unless changing the head coach is coupled with sweeping changes in the front office, changes that bring in fresh and intelligent football people empowered to make football decisions in the best interest of the franchise and the fans, then a new coach is going to do little except create an illusion of progress. Without changes in the front office, a change of coaches is no change at all.

The question the media and fans should be asking Ralph isn't are you going to fire the coach? It's when are you going to fire the management team that put this football team on the field and replace them with somebody(s) that know how to build a winner?

  12. can work at what? i think that is the difference with how we, the fans, look at it and how Ralph looks at it.

if you mean, can continue to make him and his family money, then yes it can and does work

if you mean winning, then no. and i wouldnt be surprised if he ranked the priorities in that order too. face it, it's obvious we have an owner whose bottom line is NOT winning.

When losing impacts cash flow, season ticket renewals, and the value of the franchise, winning will matter.

But as far as fans supporting or not supporting the team we're all aware of the catch-22 here.

  13. Marv is definitely largely responsible for the condition this franchise is in today. He hired Jauron and failed miserably in the draft and free agency. His tenure as GM looks worse as time goes on.

I believe Marv had good intentions when he accepted the position. But as smart as he is, he should have told Wilson to go out and hire the best football guys he could to handle the front office and let them hire a competent coaching staff. In conclusion, Marv's tenure set us back 4 seasons with his biggest blunder being bringing in Juron.

I saw 6-10 without all the injuries and now I hate to even think about it.

  14. hahahahahahahaha!

    That's funny!

A view from the stands at the Ralph & the coaches tapes/NFL network/ESPN tell me Lee & T.O. are open.....frequently.

Watch captain checkdown's head, his eyes in particular, and where he's looking. Very few glances to the outside receivers. The only throws going to 81 & 83 are predetermined rainbow fly patterns.

Watching on TV you don't get the same perspective as being in the stadium and I haven't had an opportunity to see any of the network analysis. But it was my suspicion. They both can't be doubled all the time especially when the defense brings 5 or 6 on the rush.

It comes down to confidence and trust. Confidence in your ability as a QB to deliver the ball and trust in your receivers that they're going to make the play and the catch. As a QB you can't be careless but you also can't be afraid of making an occasional mistake because its going to happen. As far as what the defense is 'giving' I see the validity of this argument but at some point you've got to have the capacity to 'dictate' the play on the field. And if you've got superior weapons at your side you've got to utilize them and attack. I think Edwards has the smarts and the physical capacity to do this. What's holding him back is puzzling. Is he taking on the persona of his head coach as some suggest? I don't know.

I suspect if you asked the great QB's if they worry about what the defense is going to 'give them' their answer would be something between laughter and a blank stare.

On things is for sure. Bills need to win this Sunday and get to .500.

  15. Scoring 40+ points in th NFL for 3 consecutive games is difficult.

Brees has thrown for 400+ yards 4 times with the Saints. The team is 1-3 in those games. If he throws for 300+ yards and the team can muster close to 100 yards on the ground they should win.

To win the Bills will need to stick to their script so far this season. Show balance on offense and shut down the run while limiting the number of big plays allowed on defense. Keep the crowd in the game.

If its windy the weather will be a factor but otherwise it shouldn't matter.

  16. Interesting article. I'll be at the game tomorrow so I'm really curious to see if Maybin gets in and where they put him. Given his youth, relatively light weight, had to add 20 lbs just to get to 250, and the fact that he's missed so much practice, I kind of think they should use him as an OLB for the next year or 2 until he fills out then maybe move him back to DE.

Get Copeland or Ellis some 1st team DE work and see if they can handle it. To me, Maybin's going to have to rely on superior quickness, technique and be super-aware of what's going on around him to be successful at DE with his current size (just like Bruce Smith). After only 1 week of practice as a rookie, I worry he'll get smashed up/injured if inserted at DE tomorrow. Throw him in at OLB in passing situations and see what kind of pass rush he can generate.

If Copeland/Ellis can perform capably with the 1st teamers, maybe coaches can groom Maybin for OLB this year. It'd be nice to push Ellison to the bench.

Just my opinion, but given the current situation, I think Maybin would make the quickest (and possibly best) contribution being an OLB this year.

Maybin appears to have the physical attributes of a great OLB in a 3-4 alignment. If he comes off as advertised and the next Bills coach commits to the 3-4 they might be able to build a defense around this guy.

  17. Buddy, get a clue. They're not buying the luxury suites, lobbyists are buying them to buy influence.

What politicians would you be accusing in your post? Congressman? Senators? It's not like they have a blank check with the Treasury to cash on the weekend...they do that during session with our tax money.

Now if you're talking about people buying season tickets or luxury suites for a college football season, then saying they are tax deductable, there's your problem.

Don't make silly accusatory or ill informed posts like that...you sound like an idiot.

I was actually trying a bit of satire to in an attempt to inject some humor here given the disposition to gloom and doom. I appoligize if it was not to your liking.

  18. The Bills are being prepared to be sold... Isn't it OBVIOUS?

They kept a lame duck coach and staff for a savings of $10M a year

They havent signed ANY substantial FA's

They have approx. $25M in available space

They PROFITED only $12M last year.

They signed that deal with Toronto for a "Trial Run" to build interest

Take a look at this link... Of note, take a look at the operating expenses chart...

    http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/30/sports...lls_301765.html

Interesting the Redskins are #1 in revenue. Why? Because the politicians in D.C. are using our tax money to buy tickets and luxury suites.

Steelers were just above the Bills in operating income but won the Super Bowl. Shows a good and sound management team with a long standing workable strategy can outsmart a bunch of clueless big spenders.

Unfortunately for us, Mr. Wilson does not possess such a management team or approach and does not appear to be in any great rush to acquire either.

  19. I guarantee this is BS (and the OP is a Pats fan).

I'd question the rationale for either party to make such a trade. If the Patriots believe Cassell is a talented and on the rise QB then they'd be hesitant to trade him to team in their division. If on the other hand, they'd entertain such a trade the Bills would be wise to run as fast as they can in the other direction. Recall trading Bledsoe to the Bills was not a problem for Mr. Bill because he felt Drew would be no threat to the Patriots supremacy, even going to a division rival. This proved to be correct. So what's changed since then? What's the saying about history? Those who ignore it are doomed to repeat it, or something like that.

  20. With the Chiefs hiring Todd Haley today, another young, fiery, inspirational, emotional coach, it just got me thinking, is Dick Jauron better than ANY current coach in the NFL? I'm sure he is, but he's not better than many. Who are the coaches that you are glad we don't have? For me, the only current coaches I can think of that I like Jauron better than are:

Tom Cable, OAK - the Raiders are a mess, so he may actually be an ok coach. But I can't see him turning them around.

Norv Turner, SD - This is a bit of a wash. Dick and Norv seem to be the same person. Except Norv has much more talent to work with.

Marvin Lewis, CIN - This team is consistently a mess. How does he still have a job?

Honestly those are the only three coaches I think are worse than Dick. Honorable mention to Wade Phillips (locker room chemistry and ownership are more the problem than his coaching), Jim Zorn (still young could turn it around), Jim Mora Jr. and Eric Mangini.

At this point I'd rather have any other living, breathing NFL head coach. But I think Madden NFL 2009 is a better coach than Juron so I'm kind of sour on our current HQ......

  21. your right, but some team that is in need of a qb will probably give him a chance to compete for a spot, while they are looking to either groom or find their future qb.

Playing this season was JP’s opportunity to audition for a job with 1 of the other 31 teams in the league. In that respect, I have to say he failed miserably by not demonstrating any proficiency at the QB position. Whether the team around him contributed to this is something the 31 other NFL front offices need to figure out, not me.

I’ve never been are ardent supporter but the guy has the ability to be a good QB. What he lacks is the mental awareness for the position. Can this be learned or is it genetic?

IMO, he could be reasonably successful with a coaching staff that gets in his face and drills into him a sense of discipline and demands accountability from its players. I didn’t see that with the Bills passive, everybody’s got to love one another and be best friends, Juronism coaching philosophy.

If you’ve played organized sports and experienced both what was more satisfying? Have a ‘good buddy’ coach and losing or having one that ‘rode your ass’ and winning?

  22. Every offseason this team needs to solve huge problems. In 07 it was at RB, LB, OL, and CB. In 08 it was LB, WR, DT, and TE. Upgrades are required this year at DE, LB, TE, and C. No wonder mediocrity is the most well-used term when describing the franchise.

Having huge needs each off-season is an indication the long term planning on this team plain stinks. Call it a lack of financial resources, but if this team drafted better it wouldn't be in the predicament they always find themselves.

A well-known front office executive once said that the prices in free agency are the penalty for drafting poorly.

It would be nice to know exactly what the team's long term plan is, if there is one. IMO, as long as we have a poor front office and lousy head coach, we will not sniff the playoffs no matter how many position upgrades are made. While a debate about the play of Edwards vs. Losman, or somebody else is interesting, it’s just an academic exercise because it’s not going to make much difference who plays the QB position. Payton Manning or Drew Brees couldn't get this team to the playoffs with the current front office and coaching staff running the show.

Like in any business, you can take smart, motivated, and talented people and put them in a business that is run by inept and incompetent management and they will not succeed.

Again IMO, I see this team as underachieving. Sure they need to upgrade at certain positions like DE, C, TE, but a better coach and motivator on the sidelines could have gotten 2 or 3 more wins out of this bunch. I try to maintain some level of optimism but it’s difficult. I think we'll be looking at a top 8 draft choice in '10.

  23. Pfft, you act like having a pass rush makes a difference in whether or not the defensive backs can play aggressive. I mean, honestly, look at the top-tier safeties in the NFL this season: Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Michael Griffin, Adrian Wilson, and Brian Dawkins (any others?). Then look at the NFL leaders in team sacks: Pittsburgh (2), Philadelphia (3), Tennessee (5), Baltimore (11), and Arizona (14).

Hang on then...maybe you are onto something!

The teams cited play a much more aggressive defense than the Bills. While I can't disagree with the desire to see more out of Whitner, I can at the same time look at any other secondary position and make unfavorable comparisions between the Bills and the teams cited above. So you can make the same argument about the Bills CB's and those of Pitt, Phil, etc.

The Bills simply play too timid in defending the pass. Its a by-product of Juron's low risk, low reward system that only seems to succeed when the opponent makes mistakes not when the Bills make plays.

Too many times during the season Bills defenders have played so far off the receiver that while watching the game on TV it wasn't clear for several seconds after the receiver caught the ball that there actually were defensive backs on the field.

  24. Really? As someone mentioned above, when the same players keep making the same mistakes week-after-week, that tells me there is little accountability on this team. Hence, why all the players "love" the coach. He's easy on them. Just my opinion though.

And I disagree with the personnel comment. A competent coach such as Jeff Fisher would have easily gotten this Bills squad to a 10 win or better season given the schedule we had. Jauron is mediocre. Or less than actually.

My vote for post of the day.

The Bills will make their standard effort to upgrade the roster through the draft and free agency. All part of the illusion of progress during the Juron regime. Hell, maybe I'll even get caught up in the optimisum that I lack at the moment.

The fact is now matter how much the roster changes, we won't get a sniff of the playoffs until we get a coach that can go head to head with the other HC's in the division. Week after week the Bills never looked that well prepared and very rarely did the gameplan seem like it was 'tuned' with the specific oppponent in mind. The salary cap is a blessing and a curse. It provides small market teams like the Bills the opportunity to compete with the big boys. But it also inhibits the ability to assemble vastly superior talent. Vastly superior talent could overcome the incompetence of a guy like Juron. The level playing field created by the cap magnifies the impact of superior coaching and front office skills. We just don't have either right now.

Sorry if I got a little off topic. Otherwise, Ryan might be an upgrade for the Jets but the only judge of that will be success or failure on the field.
