  1. Don't mistake state and city pride for arrogance. I love this city and wholeheartedly believe it's the best place to live for me, but there are downsides. Our public transportation is non existent and traffic is awful, for example. But in general almost everything is satisfactory to awesome which is why I love it. The people, food, culture, economy are all great.

I loved Austin when I lived there. Another downside, although I would arrogantly B-) disagree, is the heat. Or perhaps rather, it is that my girlfriend thinks it's too warm to move there :(

Oh yeah, another downside is that you gotta pay a bunch of money and spend a bunch of time in order to get back to WNY! :P

  2. I had a buddy who moved from Pittsburgh to Atlanta during the Thrashers era. He was totally stunned by how he could buy a hockey ticket for $8, when you aren't paying less than $75 for one in Pittburgh. He would go to the Thrashers/Penguins games down in Atlanta, pay $8 to get in, and watch the game with the other 10,000 Penguins fans.

Prices for hockey games in Pittsburgh weren't too much more than that in 2004 when I moved there..........

  3. For those who admit they were wrong about Bosa, I'm genuinely curious as to why you thought he wouldn't be a great NFL player. It was more than few people who thought this, not just on this board. I just don't get it.

I was just coming here to say I was wrong about him, too (not that I explicitly stated it pre-draft). I honestly thought he was undersized and didn't have enough speed to make up for it. But I just looked back and he's apparently 6'5" and 270#, so I don't know where I got my perception from

  4. For food, I haven't been in years, but look for Croces in the Gaslamp district. Opened by Jim Croce's wife. Sometimes their son (AJ) plays there. Dude is terrific.

Apparently Croce's closed for good a year ago: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Croces-Park-West-Closes-for-Good-366499371.html

I've never been there, but Joshua Tree National Park is gorgeous if you're looking for something outdoorsy. The rock climbing there is supposed to be magnificent.

  5. If you've never watched this, take the next five minutes and watch the ending of what has been called the "Greatest High School Game Ever Played."

It is the 1994 Texas Championship between John Tyler and Plano East. There is a full 20 for 20 about it that I have to watch every time it comes on ESPN.

Ha! Finally watched this, the end is sooo good haha! I'll have to keep an eye out for the full version

  6. There's a bunch of people in the 140+ point range. I could easily screw up and fall from number 1 to out of the top 10

Looks like you held on to win the Pick'em!

I thought I could ride the Browns' gravy train one more time

Yep... I had a few other scares picking against the Browns along the way, as well!

  7. My maiden voyage last night went extremely well! So easy, I followed the seriouseats guide. 2"-thick strip steaks. I feel like I can confidently purchase more expensive cuts of steak now and have it be worth it. I did forget to pat the steaks dry before searing. And next time I will add garlic cloves as an aromatic.

    Two questions:

I want to get a cast iron skillet. This website suggests one from Lodge and one from Utopia. What are the real advantages of one over another?

Second, does anyone have any suggestions as to a second EASY recipe to try? I'm thinking something like a roast or pork.

    Thanks!

  8. You did well on the Calculus Regent Exam, didn't you? Show off......

The Sabres are on the path to six straight years with no playoffs in a league where 16 out of 30 teams make it every year. Mathematically, what is the more difficult feat?

In the first two years of the Sabres' current drought (2011-12 and 2012-13), there were 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. Assuming they don't make it this year ( :censored: you mcbride... ), and assuming equal odds (as the OP's link does), the odds would be:

    (7/15)^2 * (8/16)^4 = 1 in 73.

So, the Bills' feat is more difficult.

The Sabres' odds of missing the playoffs 17 years in row is 1 in 131,072.

  9. Does anyone have advice using these SousVide Supreme Zip Cooking Pouches? I got the Anova and a pack of these quart-sized pouches and some gallon-sized pouches.

The reviews on Amazon seem quite mixed, so I'm concerned. I guess the intent of these bags is to lower the bag into the water until all the air is out, and then zip it up. Some posters on here described this method.

Is there any concern over this method working or not? Are these bags any better than just doubling up some way-cheaper ziploc bags?

  10. Not AFC... but the Bucs' playoff chances require hilarious things to happen: http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/226143/nfl-playoff-picture-steelers-join-giants-texans-week-16-clinchers

Slipping: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't eliminated, but a ton has to happen for them to get in. They need to win. They need Washington to tie. They need Green Bay to lose. And they need all four of the following teams to win their Week 17 games: San Francisco, Tennessee, Indianapolis and Dallas. Sounds like next year for Tampa.
