  1. I believe this is a shelf below your tequilas, but 1800 (Silver) is my go-to.

    My perfect margarita consists of:

    • 3 parts 1800
    • 2 parts Nellie & Joe's Key West Lime Juice
    • 2 parts Triple Sec (cheapest brand works fine)
    • with plenty of ice
  2. When we played years and years ago we make our own courses. "Ok hole 3. See that oak tree over there? No not that one, the one to the left." When I was in a park one day and saw a proper frisbee golf course with those basket things I said "I'm out"

My college ultimate team had an 18-hole "campus course", basically an organized version of what you said; the pins are tables, grills, lamp posts, trees, sculptures, signs, hydrants, drainage pipes, etc. And of course, hole 18 was to to tag the scoreboard at the other end of the football field -- with the mandatory such that you must go through at least one of the field goals posts!

We also had to play late at night (tee time 12am) to minimize the amount of pedestrian traffic getting in our way. Or, send the rookies out to play defense on the bystanders! :w00t:

As I understand it, a lot of college ultimate teams have some defined course like this through their campuses.

  3. There's plenty here in Rochester, as others have stated. Basil Marella in Greece is my home course - very wooded. I enjoy running the wide-open (but relatively short) Ellison Park course.

Since I play Ultimate, I also have (at least so far) refused to adopt real disc golf discs, instead playing with a "lid" (lid = Ultimate disc, the Discraft Ultrastar).

I played club ultimate in college, and I still play club on fairly competitive teams (not elite), as well as the leagues here in Rochester.

  4. Awesome job... It can be tough. I got two that can be slobs... Because they know, Me, daddy can be a neat freak! :-/

Funny story... My Grandmother would work as a part-time cleaning lady in Cheektowaga schools back in the day. She never drove... So I would pick her up in the evening after she was down cleaning JFK Jr. High. Boy would she rant how the world was going to hell in a hand basket and especially females. She said the girls made the biggest messes... Boys not so bad... LoL! This was back in the 1980s.

Yep... I worked as maintenance at Wegmans as a teenager, and the women's restroom was consistently worse than the men's!

  5. You can't put a player on your practice squad without releasing him first. He's available for other teams to sign him after he's released, then a few days later if he's still unsigned the team can sign him to the practice squad. At that point any other team can sign him to a contract to release him from the practice squad unless the team is willing to promote him to the 53 man roster.

Yes, that all sounds right. But I thought a team's new draftees were protected or something. That's why, for example, Dez Lewis was safe on the practice squad for all that time.

So am I just making this up? Thanks again.

  6. My Hokies got the 9-seed in the East, and the late game in Buffalo on Thursday, versus Wisconsin. Our first NCAA Tournament since 2007, before I was even a student there! Already got tickets with a buddy of mine here in Rochester who is a Wisconsin grad, can't wait!

  7. The only reason I don't see the Patriots and Bills is if the Patriots have to play a second TNF game beside the opener, it is far more likely they play someone like the Jets which would be higher ratings with NY/Boston then Buffalo. The last 2 years the NFL had an easy reason to do Bills v Jets with Rex. Now that is gone and I think they revert back to NY/Boston ratings instead and we get at Cincy or Miami. But def could see the Pats happening due to the Bills not yet playing them on Thursday like you said.

I think every NFL team is supposed to have exactly ONE Thursday night game, no?

Also, the Patriots* play the Falcons at home this coming season, so I imagine that will be the matchup for Week 1, right?

I may be wrong but IIRC Thursday Night games (other than the opening game) are usually inter division matchups. Buff Jets, Buff, Miami.

Usually, yes. But there were a handful on non-divisional games this past season (NE*-HOU, MIA-CIN, DAL-MIN, etc.)

If bills and Carolina are Monday night I'm gonna !@#$ Charlotte up.

That would be intense - and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Monday-nighter. I just want it to be the same weekend as a Virginia Tech home game so I can double up while I'm down there

  8. The halibut turned out great, but I'm not sure if it maybe could have been even better. I ran them for an hour at 130F per seriouseats, but afterward they were falling apart while taking them out of the bags. Any suggestions on that?

I ended up throwing them in the oven for ~5 minutes on some aluminum foil rather than searing them on the stovetop. The crispy flavor of the outsides of the fish was phenomenal.

  9. I've never tried elk, but I'll do a 130 for medium rare steak before it gets seared, so I suspect you want that temperature closer to 145 or so.

How does elk compare to cow? Are there different sections you can eat (i.e. porterhouse, filet, etc.) and is it considered tougher or leaner than cow?

Yeah, I also usually do 129F or 130F for a medium rare cowsteak. I don't know about elk, but I know that we did backstraps. So maybe it's like a big giant deer? I salted and peppered it generously (like I do for cowsteak) and the seasoning was excellent.

  10. I sous vide'd some elk two weeks ago whilst visiting my gal's folks up in Montana! Elk requires a little higher temperature compared to beef, I believe. I tried at 134F and there was still quite a bit of of red.

We've got some really nice halibut steaks (she caught them up in Alaska last summer!) thawing as we speak, so I'll be sous vide'ing those tonight. Haven't tried fish before, so I'm excited. On a related note - Happy Lenten Friday to you all :)
