  1. Yeah, I hadn't mentioned it cuz I'm only going to spend one night in each place but the morning I walk out of the Guadalupes I'm heading over to spend the day/night in Carlsbad. Then I'm going to leave Carlsbad in the morning, head up to White Sands and spend a night backcountry in the desert; should be an awesome field of stars to sleep under!

  2. Yeah, I was figuring close to a gallon a day for drinking and cooking, which is about 3-1/2 L. My plan had been to park at Chisos, work my way down toward the South Rim for a couple days (hitting Boot Spring, climbing Emory Peak, etc along the way) and then depending on terrain and what I see from the South Rim, maybe bushwhack my way cross-country down toward that Outer Mountain Loop and then use that to get over into Juniper Canyon which would lead me back North. So no, my plan is probably not sane; but that element of potential tragedy is my favorite part. :D

I really hadn't even considered caching water cuz I always try to avoid any roads/people/etc when I do this stuff; do folks just drop gallon jugs of water at places where a primitive road touches up against that Outer Mountain Loop? Are there some kind of modified bear boxes there to use? Are there issues with jackasses stealing other people's water? Caching is sort of an intriguing idea in that kind of environment.

You may have seen this already, but: https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_outermountainloop.htm ... My favorite part:

Please, do not attempt this hike during the summer months. From early May through early October, it may be physically impossible to carry enough water to safely hike this trail.

:flirt: If you go through with it, you will probably want to truly appear like you know what you are doing when you check in with the rangers/whomever, so they don't try to stop you from going.

But, yeah, there are a couple of spots to cache water (food not allowed in cahces, but looks like you're good for that). I wouldn't worry about people stealing other people's water. There is like NO ONE out there. I would plan to not depend on the natural water sources at all.

Hopefully you will have some clear days, and you can clearly see the rolling hills out into Mexico for many miles!

Now, the Guadalupe Mtns. are slightly less desolate. I don't recall the logistics of that trip as much, except parts of the hike were beautiful!

One last thing before I forget: When you hit up Guadalupe Mtns, you should DEFINITELY take a half a day to cross the border into New Mexico and check out Carlsbad Caverns. It is really funny how it just looks like there is nothing there -- just a couple small buildings off the highway in the middle of the desert -- then come to find out that there is an entrance to a massive cave there! It's amazing.

  3. I talked with a Panthers ticket rep last week and again yesterday regarding the group tickets, which go on sale to the public today at 10am.

    Yesterday he told me that:

    • The minimum number is 20 tickets.
    • You will be required to pair the Bills game with a second game (likely the Vikings in December), so 20+ tickets to that one too.
    • Tickets will be $80 each.
    • Tickets will be upper-deck (500's) on the corners, and will not be assigned til later in the summer.

    Yeesh... no thanks.

Anyone else looking into this? How about the official Bills Backers in Charlotte?

  4. Sweet! what time of year was it?

I've got a bear can that will feed me solo for about 4-5 days so food is not an issue. I'll superhydrate when I leave the truck and then walk in carrying close to two gallons between bladders and bottles. The plan is to position myself near Boot Spring late on the 2nd day. If it's wet, I'm good to go; if it's dried up, I'll have to improvise. Maybe roll the dice and head toward the spring in Juniper Canyon; worse case scenario is I head for the truck before sunrise on Day 3, reload and go spend a few nights in a different section of the Chisos. I've never been in the area before so I don't really know what to expect; I do know I can't be as impulsive as I usually am ; - ) I'm sure I'll look up a ranger before I head out and see what springs are active and take it form there.

I went in May (I think memorial Day weekend?) a few years back. I brought 10L of water, I think they recommended at least 4L/day.

Without looking... I think you can drive to three or four locations on the Outer Mountain Loop (Is that what you're doing?) and stash food/water. Don't forget that some water will be used for making food, too (I'm assuming freeze-dried meals here).

"Rolling the dice" may be inadvisable... going a day without water in potentially 100+ degree weather... Is there potentially a water source at this Boot Spring? Yes, I would call a ranger maybe a week ahead of time and they can help make sure your plan is sane :)

  5. #1) Doing a backcountry solo in the West Texas mountains at the beginning of June; first 5 days in the Big Bend area and then another 5 days up in the Guadalupe Mnts.

I did both of these when I lived in Austin! June will be harsh. I assume you will be caching food and water in Big Bend? Please make sure you have adequate plans for water. Gas station ice cream never tasted so good as when I finished that Big Bend hike!

  6. Haha. I recently got a new job, and TWICE I accidentally printed itineraries for my interview trips (flights, hotel, etc.) to my current company's home office, while I was AT my current company's other office (elsewhere in Rochester) :wallbash:

Someone (no idea who) simply stapled them and placed them on my desk, apparently. No one called me out on it.

    Good luck!

  7. I'll complain that the Panthers game is their home opener, so tickets may be more expensive(?). And also that I cannot lump it in with a Virginia Tech home game

On the flip side, the Carolina falls on my brother's birthday, and since it's early in the season, he won't have to sacrifice a hunting weekend to attend

Also, no home games Thanksgiving weekend or Christmas/New Years. It is nice to be able to lump in Bills games with trips home to WNY.....

    I don't like 3 in December

I'd thought we would avoid this! We knew they'd be away for Week 17 due to the World Juniors outdoor game, and likely away for Week 16 as well. Then they slam us with Week 13, 14, and 15 to make up for it! :death:

  8. Yes I have seen that happen.

What I find weird is not playing a division rival for the first time until December.

I do think it's a bit strange, but certainly not unprecedented, as I believe row33 is alluding to.... For example, the Saints and Bucs played each other on Dec. 11 and Dec. 24 this past season! That is extreme.

  9. Where are the rumors? Where are the leaks? Two days here, folks.

I am convincing myself that the Bills will be @Carolina on MNF Week 4, with three winnable games preceding it, so that they could maybe be 2-1 entering the game. Something like:

    Week 1 @CIN

    Week 2 NO

    Week 3 NYJ

    Week 4 @CAR on MNF

(This is not based on any facts or reports! Just my delusions...)

  10. was so happy today to see the SeaQuench from Dogfish sold in a 6 pack can. I like cans much better than bottles.

Is SeaQuench good? Saw it for the first time at Wegmans last night, and intended to look it up (so, thanks for the reminder!)... Sounds awful based on the name :D

As for me, Wegmans previously had a Unibroue mixed 6-pack that I was looking for last night, but I think they were out of it. Ended up with Bell's Oberon.

  11. My guess is we open at home to Oakland and we conclude at the Chargers.

Week 17 is always intradivision, so MIA, NYJ, or NE*.

i heard NE won't be hosting Atlanta week 1 TNF

Also I'm guessing Bills will be away two of the December weeks because there is hockey at New Era

Regarding Atlanta - Would giving them @NE* opening night and then home (in ATL) for SNF Week 2 not work? Would showcasing their new stadium really be that much better on Week 1 SNF compared to Week 2?

And good call on WJC at New Era (outdoor game is Friday Dec. 29)... So Week 17 (Dec. 31) will be @MIA, @NYJ, or @NE*? Hopefully this means that Week 16 will also be away.

From wikipedia regarding Week 16 games:

Christmas games: Christmas Day, December 25, falls on a Monday in 2017. When this most recently occurred in 2006, the Sunday afternoon games were played as regularly scheduled on Christmas Eve, while the Sunday Night Football game was moved to Christmas Day, at 4:30 p.m. EST on NBC. The 2006 Christmas Night game was played in its normal 8:30 pm EST slot on ESPN's Monday Night Football. The league has yet to announce what it will do in 2017.

Regarding the bolded, I guess we will find out soon enough (or perhaps we already know, and wikipedia is not up to date).

  12. we opened away last year. the nfl has a sort of quasi thing against doing that to teams back to back. it happens, but generally you'll open at home in the first or second week. some times ya play two home games in a row.

Actually, the Bengals haven't played at home in Week 1 since 2009! I heard that they requested to the league that they play at home Week 1 this coming season.
