  1. I don't think we need the home run plays out of the running game to be able to succeed against the Pats*. Choice/White had a combined 22 carries for 106 yards (4.8ypc). That is good enough for the offense to be able to sustain drives. I was happy to see that Chan didn't avoid the running game after Spiller went down. The O-Line has been excellent, and should be allowed to continue beating up on defenses.

  2. Not really, 2nd string vs 1st string in a blow out....

Additionally, we were in a pass defense the entire time and they kept running draws.

Also, the Chiefs using their timeouts at the end of the game? What the heck was that? If they were really still 'giving it their all' they should have gone for an onside kick instead of kicking off.

  3. And we cheered like crazy when he hit that same throw on the opposite side later in the game.

The throw in the first was complete rubbish, and deserved to be boo'd. At that point, it looked like he was going to be continuing the poor performance that he put on display against the Jets. People didn't show up from all over to see the Bills get whooped up on. We expect progress. He ended up playing some mostly mistake free football, and got the cheers that he deserved.

  4. Watched both games a few times on all-22 took a bunch of notes

I really like this match up for the Bills. With the DL and OLB upgrades, I would expect the Bills to sit back and play coverage and make the Jets QB's (whoever is in there) beat them while only rushing 4. Bills I would expect to use multiple TE and RB packages to keep the Jets out of their funky nickel/dime packages.

Let me know if you have any comments/questions

That was some smooth jazz right there.

I'm mostly worried about shovel passes and screens getting by our D-line. I'm not too confident in our LB's ability to get off blocks to make tackles.

EDIT: I also hope to see multiple RB sets. Motioning Freddy or CJ out of the backfield to be lined up on a LB is a Buffalo advantage every time.

  5. I'm somewhat surprised this has been announced this early.

I thought he looked slow and not all that powerful vs Orakpo. He kept himself in the way, but Orakpo was able to push him into the pocket on a number of occasions. He was definitely better when playing against Jared Allen, considering how Allen has been playing (as well as Orakpo) that is no small feat.

I hope to see his nasty streak come out soon. There have been a few times where he has his guy beat but he doesn't finish the block. That's being nit-picky but I love seeing that in linemen.

The guy keeps getting better every time he plays and I'm excited to see where he is when the regular season starts!

  6. Apparently you must not have wanted Merriman on the team at all from the way you are talking. We didn't release him after an injury, we are releasing him DURING his most productive off-season in 3 years. I'm not saying it isn't probably the wisest decision Gailey and Nix need to make. The only thing I am saying is I would feel better keeping a healthy Merriman.... Stop talking like a teenager. It's annoying.

I think you're off base here. Merriman looked much more productive during preseason last year when it was still a 3-4 defense. If I recall, he even had a couple of sacks.

This Defense is switching back to a 4-3 defense, which is something Merriman isn't exactly all that familiar with. He is healthy now, and according to him and coaches, moving better than he did last year. You still get a few question marks with Merriman. Will he learn to adapt to playing a 4-3 DE? Is he going to be productive in his role of ~15-20 snaps a game? Is he going to be able to stay healthy for a season? Has he shown anything this preseason to answer those questions?

With Kelsay, you're talking about a guy who has played in a 4-3 Defense for much of his career. He won't put up the stellar stats that Merriman, if he answers all those questions, could do. He will be in position on every play though, and he will be in a rotational role rather than a starting role. Kelsay doesn't have a history of injuries, doesn't have to adapt, and you know what you're getting out of the guy.

Honestly, I don't think this decision came down to Kelsay vs Merriman, rather Merriman vs. Moore. Moore is younger, no injury history, looked OK in his limited time last year and has improved upon those performances this offseason. He may not have the stats to back it up, but he's definitely been getting some pressures on QB's so far.

  7. I think they're sticking with 6 WR instead of 7. Cut Naaman, Martin stays for ST.

I agree with the sentiments that there are too few OL. Add back in Sam Young.

I don't think Carrington makes it, but Dwan does.

I think Tank gets put on the practice squad while Bradham makes the roster, ST.

I think you nailed the DB situation, but it's going to be hard going into the season with 5CBs.

Along with Tank, I'd have Zebrie Sanders, Isaiah Green, and Mark Asper on my practice squad.

  8. Spencer Johnson is definitely not a DE in this scheme - just mark him down as a DT right now.

Hopefully Carrington is allowed to lose weight and possibly move back to DE.

Troup's career with the Bills has to be on life-support right now.

Truth to tell, we really don't have much depth at DT behind Williams and Dareus. Spencer Johnson is really the only proven veteran. Heard has been decent.

If Levitre plays Tackle for the Bills ever again, this draft was officially a disaster. Levitre moving to OLT (as their 3rd option, after both Bell AND Hairston went down) was the deathknell of the 2011 season.

Spencer is listed as a DE on the BuffaloBills.com roster. They had him playing OLB in the 3-4 (bad idea) which would be a DE in the 4-3. His biggest problem as a LB was getting sideline to sideline. That he did as well as he did speaks volumes of Spencer. He won't have to worry about that as much as a DE, especially if he's put there in the correct situations. I wholeheartedly agree that he's best suited as a DT, but don't be surprised if you see him lined up at end.

  9. DE and DT are tough.

    DE

    Mark Anderson

    Danny Batten

    Lionel Dotson

    Robert Eddins

    Spencer Johnson

    Chris Kelsay

    Shawne Merriman

    Kyle Moore

    Mario Williams

At DE, I assume Mario and Mark are locks. I would be surprised to see Merriman cut since he's already gotten a bonus this year. Kyle Moore showed promise in his limited action last year. Kelsay is moving back to his natural position, and had some good games towards the end of last year. The FO seems high on Spencer Johnson, and he's versatile enough to play DE and DT (originally signed as a DT). I am not optimistic for Batten, Dotson, or Eddins. Haven't really been impressed by those three.

    DT

    Alex Carrington

    Marcell Dareus

    Dwan Edwards

    Jaron Gilbert

    Kellen Heard

    Jay Ross

    Torell Troup

    Kyle Williams

At DT, Kyle and Marcell are locks. I think Dwan is underrated and would be a very good rotational DT. It's hard to believe the Bills are willing to give up on either Troup or Carrington already. I though Heard made some good plays last year and made a lot of progress from where he was at this point last year. I think Ross and Gilbert will have the most difficult time making it to the roster.

    HORRAY FOR HARD DECISIONS!

  10. I like the idea of Young coming in to compete for the backup QB spot and Wildcat QB. There is nothing wrong with some competition. The Bills have a very stable locker room that, I would think, be able to keep his head in check. Best case scenario, he proves to be a good backup and can step in if Fitz gets hurt. Worst case, he's a headcase and gets cut.

  11. New England Bye Weeks since 2000, from the patriots website: http://www.patriots.com/games-and-stats/schedule.html

    2012 - Bye week: 9 Week 10 opponent: Buffalo

  12. Wasn't Levitre's first game at LT the Redskins game where Fitz got wrecked? Seem to recall London got past Levitre.

Levitre was playing LT on the play Fitz got hurt, but it was through the LG hole that LF came through.

Redskins were in a 3 man front, 2 backers stunted around the NT, slightly delayed, bringing a total of 5 guys. Wood and Urbik doubled the NT, Rhinehart barely got a piece of Orakpo and LF went through untouched. Levitre was engaged with the RDE the entire time.

  13. There are 10 players listed that I would keep.

    DE

    Mario Williams

    Mark Anderson

    Chris Kelsay

    Shawne Merriman

    DT

    Marcell Dareus

    Kyle Williams

    Torell Troup

    Kellen Heard

    DE/DT

    Alex Carrington

    Spencer Johnson

If the Bills intend to be as aggressive with the front 4 as they are implying, they are going to need a lot of bodies to stay fresh.
