  1. I was just thinking of how the current Bills are made up of a material amount of castaways and undrafted players and thought to just see the composition of early 90's Bills. Quite amazing how much the team's starters were composed of such high draft picks and sought after players....

    1st Rounders (8) - Bruce Smith (#1), Cornelius Bennett (#2),Lofton (#6), Shane Conlan (#8), Jim Kelly (#14), Ritcher (#16), Leonard Smith (#17), Wolford (#20)

    2nd Rounders (3) - Odomes (29), Thomas (40), Talley (39)

That's 11 starters that were rounds 1 or 2 on the 90 Bills, not to mention they added the following other quality replacements:

    1st - Henry Jones (#26), Fina (#27)

    2nd - Hansen (#53)

It's hard not to be good with the pedigree of the players we had. This doesn't even take into consideration we had some pro-bowlers from the later rounds or undrafted - Kent Hull (und), Andre Reed (4th), Howard Ballard (11th)... Its quite sick.

By comparison - last years' Bills had 3 firsts (Dareus, Barnett and Wood) and 5 seconds (Dwan Edwards, Kelsay, Florence, Bird and Levitre)

  2. Alright - after a week of camp I am making the following prediction - Donald Jones will not make the team. Everyone has been saying there are 4 locks at WR (Johnson, Graham, Nelson and Jones). IMO, All of Aiken, Hagan and Easley are playing materially better as receivers through camp. The one item going for Jones is may be a better blocking WR, however, he has significant trouble getting open and is often the targeted receiver for the picks thrown by Fitz. This is true not only of camp, but his play in the previous two seasons as well. If the season were to start today Johnson, Graham, Nelson and Hagan are all in. The big question is number 5 - and I think Easley and Aiken both have more upside than Jones... Take it for what its worth. Just my opinion.

  3. I can make a very good argument why Fergy is not the 3rd best QB in Bills history. Although he played for a long time, the team did nothing and other than handing the ball to Simpson, he did nothing. I am not saying he was a horrible QB, but if given the choice, I would take Flutie hands down. 21-9 for a career record is pretty good all things considered. Lamonica is probably the 3rd best QB (if not 2nd) on the list, however just like Bledsoe his performance came elsewhere.

good link. flutie 21-9. near the bottom in sack percentage. flutie used to be tough to watch sometimes, but i'll bet he had one of the lowest "3 and out" percentages of bills qbs as well. always seemed like he moved the chains a bit. big factor in our d being so good during that period.

Of the 194 QBs All-time that Qualify, Flutie ranks 16th in Sack%.... Rob Johnson 194th...

  5. A couple of thoughts on my logic:

    1. McKelvin is in a contract year - he is going to play out of his mind. He knows that he is going to take a steep cut in pay if he doesn't blow the doors off of everyone this year. Chix knows this as well.

    2. Brooks may be a steal for a 4th rounder, but they can easily park him on the practice squad

    3. As much as I can't stand Ruvell Martin - he is one of the best gunners we have - giving him value. I hope that some of our other players will fill this role as I would much rather have Jones, Hagan, Aiken or even Roosevelt over Martin.

    4. Moving McGee to Safety would make a lot of sense. Countless times veteran corners have been moved over and it usually pans out. His veteran leadership would be very valuable as our depth as safety is questionable (Searcy is unproven and Scott is more of a nickel LB).

    5. Backup QB is a HUGE hole right now. Vince Young is a talent, but is he smart enough to run Gailey's offense?

    6. Mark my word - Brad Smith will be an invaluable asset this year. He was vastly underutilized, especially down the stretch. He is a situational player who will be used more in situations in which we have a lead and the playcalling can be more unpredictable. We were destroyed at WR and were behind most of the latter half of the season when he disappeared at QB. Thing will change this year.

  6. Is anyone else as excited as I am about this team this year. This is the first time in a long time where we are going to have serious positional battles with quality players and good people are going to get cut. My breakdown is as follows:

QB (3): Fitz is a lock to start, Young (if he comes) and Thigpen battle for #2, Smith lock for #3

RB (3): Jackson (lock), Spiller(lock), White and Choice are battling for #3.

WR (5 or 6): This is where it gets interesting. Johnson (#1) and Nelson (#3) are locks. TJ Graham is also pretty safe and is competing for the #2 slot with Easley and Jones - both of whom have a good chance to start or if they lose could get cut. Given we carry Smith as QB#3, there is a good chance that we only carry 5 receivers meaning Ruvell Martin (who IMO can't catch) or Derek Hagan have legitimate chances to make the team over Jones or Easley for their special teams ability. The rest are on the outside looking in.

TE (2 or 3): Chandler most likely will start with Smith and Caussin battling for #2.

    FB: McIntyre - pretty safe

OL(9): Wood, Pears, Urbik all locks at their respective position. Levitre may start at LT or LG pending how Glenn vs. Hairston pans out (all 3 are in). Given Glenn's ability at Guard and his potential at tackle, I wouldn't be surprised if they feel that Glenn-Levitre is better than Levitre-Glenn or Levitre-Hairston as an overall combination. Rinehart I think is also safe, leaving Asper, Sanders and Brown as the realistic competition for the last 2 slots.

DL(8 or 9): Williams (2x) and Dareus are locks. Although Anderson was a high-priced free agent, I wouldn't expect Kelsay to go down quietly. He may put up a big fight and win the other end position. Needless to say this is a great problem to have. The remaining 3/4 positions are loaded with talent - Merriman (if healthy), Carrington, Johnson, Edwards, Troup and Heard all have legitimate shots of making the team or getting cut. Danny Batten they are listing at DE, but I think will be rotated back to LB by the season. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Arthur Moats is rotated back to DE (where he played in college) and him making the team over all those previously mentioned.

LB(6 or 7): This is by far our weakest positional group. Barnett is solid and Sheppard should be. Morrison is ok and although is penciled in as a starter may not make the team. Bradham and Carder have a good chance to make it solely due the lack of competition. Thoughts are they carry 6 - Barnett, Sheppard, Bradham, Carder, White and Batten.

CB(5): This is a fun positional battle. Ultimately Gilmore and Williams will be starting (maybe not this year). Florence and McGee both make the team (however don't be surprised if they move McGee to safety). McKelvin, Brooks and Rogers all battling out for last spot. Sorry people - McKelvin will make it.

S(4): Byrd and Wilson are locks. Searcy is pretty safe. If they carry Scott as a LB, look for them to move McGee to S. This would open the roster for Rogers (who in IMO should be on the team)

K/P: Don't be surprised if the Lindell/Moorman stranglehold is broken this year. We actually have real competition at these positions. The changing of the guard may be now.

    LS: Sanborn is a lock

Sorry for the longwinded post. I have just been sooooo juiced and need to get my thoughts out there.

  7. With Buddy Nix scheduled to retire after the draft, is there any chance that we bring back Polian to be the GM? I know its a long shot, but Polian has built 3 long-term playoff contenders in the past 20 years. Is there still bad blood or has all been resolved? Thoughts?

  8. You can argue with them alot. But if our defense is improved, I'll buy 13-3, why not? I freakin' love this team.

Why why why why why why why? Really, WHY? Why does everyone think the Cowboys have a chance? They are AWFUL.

I am trying to be realistic. In reality, we probably have about a 35-40% chance to beat San Diego and a 55-60% chance to beat Tennessee. Would I love it if the Bills ran the table and ended 14-2. You bet. But I was trying to look at this statistically.

  9. Forget power rankings. Check out the below link

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/standings/_/type/playoffs/sort/conferenceRank/order/false

Other than the Niners, no team with a winning record has a comparable record in Strength of Schedule or Strength of victory. They have had the toughest road to date and have played fantastic.

My prediction at this point - 11 wins

NYJ - should split (1 win)

Mia - should sweep (2 wins)

Den - should win (1 win)

Ten - 50% chance of winning (1/2 win)

SD - 50% chance of winning (1/2 win)

NE - 1/3 chance of winning (1/3 win)

Dal - 2/3 chance of winning (2/3 win)

  10. After the first 5 weeks where the Bills won the mistake differential, this game was different. Fitzy made 3 mistakes which cost the game. There was also one terrible play call by Gailey (but I can't rule this a mistake).

    1. Fitzy's 2 interceptions. Neither ball was thrown well. In both situations the coverage was there and the ball was totally underthrown. Losing the turnover battle is always a recipe for disaster.

    2. The Bills were driving deep in Giants territory and Fitz took a sack on a 3rd down, knocking them out of FG range. This play turned out be crucial as if he would have thrown it away, Lindell would have had a 42-43 yd FG attempt, instead they punt. This one you couldn't blame on the line as Fitz had all day to throw.

For the record the one bad play call by Gailey was the 3rd and inch call where he called Freddy off-tackle who then lost a yard. He needed an inch. How about a QB sneak (which he did later in the game, knowing not to make the same mistake twice). He could have run the wildcat with Brad Smith or even brought McIntyre in as a lead blocker to set up a seam. Terrible play call.

  11. I have been a big proponent of moving the kickoff back to the 35 only for Overtime. The reason - the extra 5 yards makes a huge difference in the field position battle. Prior to the league moving the the kickoff to the 30, OTs were pretty balanced (something like 48/52) on who won. As soon as they moved it back 5 yards, OTs became whoever won the coin toss won the game. Then everyone wanted to change the rules to fix OT when all they needed to do is adjust the kickoff distance. I think they should still leave it at the 30 for the rest of the game as I agree there are a hell of a lot more returns.

  12. Coach, Buffalo is 41% african american, Philly is 43%. Buffalo has had dogfighting problems too in some neighborhoods.

I am not trying to say that Buffalo doesn't have a large black population nor a dogfighting problem. However, the 41% number you are quoting is very misleading. That number only includes the people inside the city limits, however in the metro area it is more in the 13% range and about ~130K people on an absolute basis. Where looking at Philly, the metro area is about 21% and ~1.2mm people on an absolute basis.

  13.

"I think I can say this now, because it's not going to hurt anybody's feelings, and it's the truth... I didn't want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options."

Those two teams wanted him and would've allowed him to start, but after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced—and granted league approval—to sign with Philly. "And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation."

This entire commentary is missing the reality of the situation. The whole move by Goodell was political. When Vick was coming out of prison there was a lot of questions on whether he should have been allowed to play at all. PETA was up the league's a@@ and the general population was divided. The league moved to put Vick in a city that had a high black population and an underground dog fighting problem. This way Vick could become a role model of "what not to do" and atone for his misbehavior through his required community service. The NFL really didn't have a choice in the matter. At the time they were talking Philly or Baltimore, neither of which really needed a QB. By sending him to either of those cities, they take a terrible situation and spin it positively - and clearly it worked. People have basically forgotten about Vick's issues, underground dog fighting has dropped dramatically and Vick has become a poster child for community service in the Philly area.

In the end, it was not a football issue. It was a marketing issue.

  14. We need to come up with a nickname for the Bills offense given they are a whole pile of also-rans and never weres. The are basically the "Replacements"

    Current Bills Starters/potential starters

QB – Fitzpatrick – 7th round for St Louis

    RB – Jackson – undrafted

    FB – McIntyre – undrafted

    WR – Johnson – 7th round

    WR – Parrish – 2nd round

    WR – Nelson – undrafted

    WR – Jones – undrafted

TE – Chandler – 4th round by San Diego, dumped and subsequently dumped by NYG and Dal

    LT – Bell – 7th round

LG – Rinehart – 3rd round by Washington, dumped and subsequently dumped by NYJ

LG – Levitre – 2nd round (just demoted to 2nd team)

    C – Wood – 1st round (a real player)

RG – Urbik – 3rd round by Pitt - dumped

    RT – Pears – undrafted

  15. MPO - Pending on how the salary cap works for next season - trade Evans!!! He is a $7mm salary hit and, quite honestly, hasn't been playing up to snuff. He runs great fly routes but dropped numerous crucial 3rd downs last year (historically this isn't really his problem). With all eyes pointing as Parrish being the slot, it leaves 3 solid starters for 2 positions. David Nelson, has shown glimpses of being an unbelievable possession receiver and at 6'5" towers over most DB's. Don't get me wrong - I definitely think Evans is a very good receiver (borderline pro-bowl in a good year), but we have so many holes, he would be good for a pro-bowl caliber LB or OT (had the CBA been active, we should have gotten at least a 2nd rounder for him)...

However, w/o the trade - Evans, Johnson, Parrish, Nelson, Easley. Roosevelt is 7th on the chart - PS fodder for one more year. Jones will be picked up elsewhere if they don't carry 6.

  16. Marcell Dareus MD - the Doctor of Defense, obviously. Just call him 'Doc'

Kyle Williams the Motor (the motor driving the defense forward)

Torrell Troup "Tiny T" (self explanatory)

Michael Jasper "Little Mike" (equally self explanatory)

I have no clever nicknames for Kelsay or Edwards.

For Jasper, we should call him "The Beef" - hence until he starts - "Where's the Beef?"... Also - the question works for the fact he lost 54 pounds to get "down" to the light 378 he is at now....

  17. Yes if Fitz hits that they win, but if Roscoe makes that 35 yard catch, if Lee makes that catch in his hands, if FJ makes a catch and it extends the drive instead of a punt. The problem with Fitz throwing the INT is that the Bills have such little margin for error whereas better teams' QBs throw INTs like that all the time but the entire team is better and they stop the offense. Imagine that, after a turnover your defense actually stopping someone.

Also, that pick 6 is a much easier play to make for B Scott than a 40 yard pass play. That ball is just floating there and is a catch you HAVE to make. Same with Whitner in the Baltimore game.

When you put your offense in the position where they have to make all the plays in the game you are in trouble.

The Bills stopped the Bears on 3rd down but a penalty extends the 1st TD drive and those 4 points are the differnece in the game, same with a missed PAT. The Bills are just not good enough to make up for those type of plays

I liked the call. Fitz had Johnson, the safety was far enough away to be a non-factor. Fitz just underthrew it. He was going for the jugular, it would have given us a win. I am excited for the 2nd half of the season. Even though they are 0-8, I want to see how the Harvard man continues to play. It has been a fine line between winning and losing this season (as it always is), but I think they turn the corner in the 2nd half which could carry to next season.

  18. Yes Im a loser and I really get into the draft....I have always wanted to attend the draft and what a more exciting year than this one to do it....how hard is it to obtain tickets? Im from Buffalo and have never been to the city that never sleeps... Any experiences?

I live in the NYC area and went with some friends when we drafted Mike Williams. In all honesty, I would rather watch the draft at home. The year I went it was at MSG (now they do it at Radio City) and quite honestly it was like watching paint dry. When you remove the ESPN commentators and highlights of the players, you are left with sitting in an auditorium watching a countdown clock. Then every 15-20 minutes you have activity when there is a pick, the announcement is made, there is a huge uproar (both positive and negative) and then you return to sitting in an uncomfortable chair waiting... When you have to go to the bathroom, you then try and wait to not miss anything, but when you go, it never fails, the next team does something a minute after the previous team. After about 2-3 hours, you start thinking - I could be at home on my couch with some beers and food.
