Why are sacks relatively rare for 3-4 DEs?

Recommended Posts

Reggie White 15 years in the NFL- Bruce Smith 19 years in the NFL. Smith had to play an additional 4 years to catch White and beat his sack total

Bruce would have put up ridiculous numbers playing with the DLine/Pass Rush Specialist personnel Reggie spent his career with. Clyde Simmons/Jerome Brown/Golic/Bryce Paup/Sean Jones. Bruce might have had 200 sacks in 10 seasons had he been fortunate enough to play on a 43 team with a guy like Jerome Brown next to him instead of the 34 with Jeff Wright and Leon Friggin' Seals.

Bruce was 32 years old before the BILLS got a real NT. It wasn't a coincidence that both Bruce and Bryce Paup were 1st team All Pros that season. That says nothing of the Walt Corey versus Buddy Ryan debate.

I Said,

The Bills run a lame style of 4-3,meaning the DE's and DT's need to be smaller, quicker with more ability to shed blocks and penetrate vs bigger more powerful linemen that can bull rush the O linemen into the backfield.

You said,

They started out thinking that way but realized it wasn't working so well and that's why they traded for Stroud. IMO

The Bills drafted Maybin, 6'4" 250lbs with the #1 pick in 09 as I'm sure you know, they have him listed as a DE at 250 lbs

Perhaps the FO were thinking they found another Bruce Smith type in Maybin because of his first step and speed.

If Bruce Smith took 2 years to develop into a good DE and he started at 287lbs, I just don't see Maybin at DE as a run stopper for quite a while, not at 250

Smith's legs were like Popeye's forearms, plus he could drive while unconscious. Maybin? I don't think so.
