Just becuase im bored Look at this misuse of Draft picks

Recommended Posts

I was just doing some research on previous Drafts and came upon something quite interesting.

The draft of 1995

1995 - Quarterbacks

Rd Sel # Player School Team

1 3 Steve McNair Alcorn State Houston Oilers

1 5 Kerry Collins Penn State Carolina Panthers

2 45 Todd Collins Michigan Buffalo Bills

2 60 Kordell Stewart Colorado Pittsburgh Steelers

3 80 Stoney Case New Mexico Arizona Cardinals

3 84 Eric Zeier Georgia Cleveland Browns

4 99 Rob Johnson USC Jacksonville Jaguars

We selected Todd Collins with our 2nd round pick in the Same draft the Rob Johnson was a 4th round pick who we later traded for for a 1st and a 4th.

1998 was the year Todd Collins was released and Rob Johnson was traded for

I know our opinions of Rob Johnson Now- BUT Rob Johnson was clearly better than Todd Collins in that Draft and we could have saved a 1st and 4th and he would have had the grooming of Jim Kelly and he might have been better or we could have been reciepients of a 1st and 4th for him. Either way-Another miscue.

Rob Has had apparenly a career ending injury.

However Todd collins career stats 4335 yds 22 tds 19 int 76.2 rating

Rob Johnson career stats 5,795 yds 30 tds and 23 ints 83.6 rating

Ok lets divide those stats across career starts

20 starts for Collins = 216.75 yards per game, 1.1 TDs, .95 INTs

29 starts for Johnson - 199.82 ypg, 1.03 TDs, .79 INTs

Both are pretty bad...

However Collins is 10-10 as a starter while Johnson is 12-17

Either way its about when we should have drafted Johnson over Collins and not given up the picks for him.

That is rediculous...if Johnson "should have" been drafted sooner, then he would have by someone...in hindsight, every team in the NFL should have drafted Tom Brady and Terell Davis in the first round, in fact #1 overall in their drafts, but they didnt get drafted until the late rounds...why, because he draft is a crap shoot and there is no way to accurately project a player to the NFL. All they can do is make their best guess based on the limited information available...

You doomsday people crack me up about how you look back on the draft as if you could have done any better in that war room. I guarantee you that none of you even draft Brady or Davis in those drafts knowing what you knew going into the draft...
