Tom
XM is going to make a big upgrade in the very near future where they are going to offer an attachable 7 and 10 inch LCD screen and will be transmitting Sat TV to your vehicle and it will have enough of a buffer to give you smooth uninterupted audio/video feed. Basically, they have put together a codec that is very similar to mpeg4 but with variable rate bandwidth. right now they are in the process of trying to figure out what video to market, how and to whom. the big problem is that even with an upgrade, the quality is not going to be anywhere close to what consumers have come to expect when watching live tv. the entire current XM bandwidth for all 100 channels is 4.8 Mb/s, about the same as one dbs mpeg 2 channel, adding new video content is going to involve adding additional transponder and bandwidth capacity, and that is not going to be easy as the FCC has allocated everything it has available in the L band. Sirius is also said to be working on video.
MadBuffaloDisease
The technology will be the same for both more or less. Again the key is programming.
