A 2nd and a 7th.

The Dolphins have screwed Wes Welker, at least in the near term.

This trade mean Wes Welker may not see any of that money promised in the RFA offer sheet. Technically, the Pats don't have to negotiate a contract for Welker now and can let him play out his contract or sign him now more to their terms than the RFA offer. Welker is probably cursing the Dolphins for not letting him cash in that huge signing bonus in 7 days.

Peter King is reporting a 2nd and a 7th.

Don't know why they wouldn't just sign him to a poison pilled offer sheet and give up only the 2nd.

HD,

As a PAT fan, would you have preferred that the Pats kept Branch rather than paying similar amount of money to Wes Welker ?

They're not going to pay a similar amount to Welker. The $38.5 million figure was likely poison-pilled, and the real deal he gets from the Pats will likely be considerably less.

Anyway, Branch was under contract last year, and the only way he would've stayed is if the Pats ripped up the last year of his deal. Doing that would've set a dangerous precedent for a team that is heavily reliant on drafting well and getting players for as long as possible on rookie contracts. Thus, the team would've been hurt if Branch was still here, and are not by Welker being here.
