The theory being it's better to carry another lineman or some such because if your 3rd man has to come in, your are probably already sunk... Something on the order of 40 years ago, Unitas went down and rb Tom Matte was pressed into duty - had a handful of plays inked on a wristband. The idea was - Matte, being the season-long halfback, had a good handle on the team plays and of the opponents, too. I doubt if ithis is today's case, but in ancient times before everything got fancy and specialized (don't just level the guy - level the guy according to page 352, paragraphs 4, 5, and 7e per the defensive plan), one's punter was schooled in the offensive plays.
