Here's a something I found from last year about franchise/transition tags.

The NFL's best-paid players at each position in 2004, for purposes of calculating franchise and transition designation contract offers. Figures include prorated signing bonus, other bonuses and base salary. The franchise number is the average of the top-five salaries; transition number is the average of the top-10.

Cornerback

Antoine Winfield, Minn. $12,400,000

Ty Law, N.E. $9,601,365

Samari Rolle, Tenn. $8,313,335

Patrick Surtain, Mia. $7,884,371

Daylon McCutcheon, Cle. $5,883,333

Aaron Glenn, Hou. $5,416,666

Dre' Bly, Det. $5,300,000

Sam Madison, Mia. $5,180,931

Chad Scott, Pitt. $4,785,000

Ronde Barber, T.B. $4,614,000

Franchise $8,816,000

Trans ition $6,938,000

You can tell by the players & salaries alone that this figure is going to drop. Ty Law, Samari Rolle alone both got cut and took a huge pay cut. I also want to say that Winfields salary number get smaller as the contract goes on.

unless i'm missing someone, these are the 5 that will make up the '06 calculation:

woodson -- 10.5M

bly -- 4M

barber -- 3.75M

madison -- 3.42M

law -- 2.5M

average -- 4.834

those are straight salary figures above, so they wouldn't include any performance based incentives earned (which likely are included in the calculation as they are paid immediately to the player)........if i missed a CB with a higher salary it will throw the number off as well.......

so if pro-rated signing bonus is included the numbers look more like this:

woodson -- 10.5M

bly -- 5.3M

barber -- 5.05M

madison -- 6.15M

law -- 3.5M (likely bumped out by someone else)

average -- 6M

If I were a player, I'd be pissed if what year other vets are in their contract can drop the franchise tag by $3mil from one year to the next. Definelty a screwy system, but hey if it helps us tag Clements for $5mil, I think it's great.

But I will feel bad for Clements having to scrape by with only $5mil. If he signs here, I'd suggest we take up a collection.
