Notice the quote from article:

In order to verify the identity of new Gmail users, Google sends new subscribers a sign-up link in the form of a mobile phone text message to whatever telephone they provide.

 

Not as simple as it appears especially if you want to sign up multiple computers and if you do not have a mobile phone.

I'm not sure what that's talking about. I downloaded TALK about a week ago and it didn't have to use a mobile phone. I already have a gmail account, and it set up through that.

Mine set up through my gmail account but still won't authenticate to my work server. Documentation is very spotty and basically just says that it should work. (I can sign in via Microsoft Messenger, but GoogleTalk won't work.)

It says they send the text message to new gmail users, not new users of Talk.
