I cheered because they finally used the rules to their advantage. 

Assuming that’s accurate, that’s not a great decision by McDermott (the first penalty, not the second).  It’s a quirk of the rule that you really don’t gain any real advantage by enforcing it on the kickoff. Better to make the kicker try a 48 EP on a windy night. Was that option even available?

Pretty sure it was, for example if there's a defensive penalty on the TD, the scoring team can elect to try for two from the one I believe.

 

Think it's the coaches decision to take the penalty on the PAT or on the kickoff.
