Does anybody remember the televised game during which buildings were burning down behind the centerfield fence of Yankee Stadium? It was totally visible to the TV audience.

Howard Cossell was the announcer, and was flipping out about "urban blight," etc.

Was this during one of the Yankee/Dodgers world series of 77/78?

Thanks.

Hi Bill,

I don't remember the event specifically, but according to this web page it was during the 1977 ALCS:

Inner City Press Bronx Reporter

Look for the Dec. 31, 2001 posting.

Here's the relevant quote:

And, in a detail that has become iconic, Merola describes the broadcaster Howard Cosell, while doing the play-by-play of the 1977 American League baseball championship between the Yankees and the Kansas City Royals, pointing out several simultaneous fires raging in The Bronx. This moment is often described as a "wake-up call" or as a "death knell."
