By that I mean that he was not hired by Wilson to be the GM. That job belonged to Terry Bledsoe at the time, but Bledsoe suffered a heart attack following the '84 season and Wilson, in a move seemingly like those today, placed Polian, the then Director of Pro Personnel, in that role as acting GM prior to subsequently promoting him to that position permanently.
